I love classic ThinkPad Keyboards so much, I got another one! (Lenovo ThinkPad Travel Keyboard)

I was gifted a Lenovo ThinkPad travel keyboard which I've been enjoying a lot. Although they're somewhat harder to find nowadays, the build is of that classic ThinkPad caliber and it is extremely light and usable. With the TrackPoint, I can use this thing at the very long length of its cord and still have a keyboard and mouse.
It works out of the box on Linux, but the main issues were the lack of a Windows key (which is easily remapped in my case), but there were also some minor key roll-over problems. Altogether I still like it enough that I might just starting using it as a real-life regular keyboard on my desk.

PSA to anyone patching windows keys in: If you want to turn one of the bottom 3 buttons into a super key, you can configure it pretty easily in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/us. Play with the symbols file and get rid of whichever key is useless to you. Then you can keep the same sxhkd profile between computers.

@@LukeSmithxyz Nope, it's the same model you have though mine was from a chinese seller on ebay... it doesn't feel like my X220 keyboard. I use the newer chiclet thinkpad keyboard externally and it's better than the SK one with much softer keys.

If you’re super into old thinkpad keyboards, theres a Taibao listing for a custom made USB conversion with a custom housing (I chose wood). Ordered through SuperBuy, hasn’t arrived yet, and costed me £55 with the NMB X220 Keyboard.

Monolithic kernel is not modular, static kernel. The kernels we generally use today is modular, so when you connect a device, the "driver" actually injected as a module to the kernel. So, Linux is the kernel, and it definitely uses drivers as modules. The most important thing here is, generally drivers are generic, so that when you connect a hid device like a keyboard, a generic driver which is written for Thinkpad keyboard is injected as a module, it works! However, since the driver is generic, some of the functions may not work, or work as expected. If the device has a specific module, driver on the other hand, most of the functions may work if they have been added in the driver. My 20 dollars.

There's also a mechanical keyboard with a trackpoint. It's from TEX Electronics called Yoda II. It costs over 280$, but since it's mechanical it should last a long time.

If you want to know if it sends bytes but it doesn't generate xevents to xinput.
    Usé the tool usbhid-dump.
To see if it sends something. Just remember to give it a timer so it doesn't capture the USB for a minute(default timer )
    For that unknown key.

I like trackpoints and it's hard to find external keyboard with it (I had 2 different ThinkPad Travel Keyboards though), but then I built custom board with QMK firmware and mapped modifier+HJKL to mouse emulation and it's actually cool. Probably not so cool without QMK and extra keys for modifier, but still doable.
And yes, there are TEX Shinobi if someone wants cooler version of Travel Keyboard and has ~200$.

Cool keyboard, modeled after the thinkpad x201 keyboard i believe. There's also the SK-8855 which is more similar to the x220 keyboard, with the bigger escape and delete keys and the meta key. I went all out and got the Tex Shinobi, super cool mechanical keyboard with the same sk8855 layout and used a modern trackpoint module so it stays faithful to the feel 🥵👌

  • @FunkyDeleriousPriest

Yeah man. These keyboards are my absolute favorites, and I don't even like row-staggered ANSI keyboards. I'd rather be using an ErgoDox or a Planck, but that TrackPoint always keeps me coming back. IBM/Lenovo also made the correct choice by having the function key in the most bottom-left location. Dell and HP put it between the Ctrl and Win keys, but it's marginally more convenient to hit the Ctrl key when it is that much closer. On the topic of Ctrl keys, it looks like you really lucked out with this keyboard having pure Ctrl/Alt - it truly isn't a Windows keyboard at all.

Linux has drivers the difference between Linux and Windows is that the majority of drivers are built into the Linux kernel while the majority for Windows are not.
They both work the same way and yes for many newer devices you will still have to manually install drivers on Linux and many times those drives will be some volunteer work that's not officially supported which is why that was a thing people would say about Linux having bad hardware support, its gotten a lot better more recently though but we still have issues. RGB keyboards for instance is like half of them work OK and half of them don't, but regardless you'll be using OpenRGB for any of them and the configuration software is nowhere near as robust as the official ones for Windows obviously....
