  • Hello everyone! Back again with the first of a series of videos involving major upgrades to my ThinkPad T430. In this video I run through the process of replacing the original and somewhat controversial "island-style" keyboard with a classic keyboard from the previous generation. I'm very pleased with the results and hope this helps some of you! Stay tuned for the next upgrade video!

      I barely understand it either, as long as you closely follow the ReadMe included with the EC files it isn't too terribly daunting.

    When I did this on my x230 tablet I tested they keyboard swap without isolating the pins and the laptop started smoking within moments of turning on. Thankfully I hadn’t actually attached the keyboard into case so I was able to yank it out before any damage was properly caused. Please isolate the pins.

    Very nice video! Thanks for sharing! (One remark though, at 11:44: "sudo apt-get update" refreshes only the package information. It does not actually perform any "update". For this, one should issue the command "sudo apt-get upgrade" after the information on the packages has been updated. Unfortunately, the keyword "update" does not have the same meaning for every package manager. For instance, in Fedora, "sudo dnf update" will in fact update/upgrade your system.)

      I totally agree. For now we can stock up on *30 series thinkpads, and mod them with the *10-*20 keyboards. And stock up on spare keyboards. But sooner or later the day will come... what are we going to do when the keyboards supply is exhausted? Or when the laptops that can use them don't function anymore, or are too slow to run the ever bigger and slower software of the day?

    12:08: It should not be necessary to run 'git' as the superuser in this step. Downloading and building the EC software should be possible with ordinary user privileges.
    12:45: Again, _building_ the software should not require root. (The reason you needed root in this instance is because you ran `git` as root earlier, and the thinkpad-ec directory and all its files are consequently owned by root.)
    14:32: Helpful mnemonics for the `dd` args: "-if" == input file; "-of" == output file.

    I've been using an X220 since 2011, and am a big fan of it's keyboard. I had a desktop PC at work, I got a ThinkPad USB keyboard for it, which has the same layout as an X230. I have to say the keys have pretty good feel and I did a lot of coding on that keyboard and basically it's a pretty good keyboard. But, even if the keys are good, the layout is not as good as the 7-row keyboard. I kept missing the way the Del/Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys are arranged on the 7-row, and also the F keys being divided into groups of 4. So I think it's worth the hassle to fit a 7-row keyboard into the *30 models.

    The stock T430 keyboard doesn't really bother anywhere near as much as the newer, cramped chiclet style keyboard of today. T430 keyboards are in that transitional area between the amazing keyboards of their chonky ancestors, and those DREADFUL keyboards you'd find on, say, a modern Dell laptop.
    Useable overall tbh.

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Год назад +1

      As I said in the video, the feel of the T430 keyboard doesn't bother me, it's mostly the layout. I still think modern ThinkPads have better keyboards in both feel and layout than many of their competitors, but I prefer the 7-row layout of older machines hence the main reason for doing this mod. Nothing wrong with preferring the stock T430 keyboard though!

    When installing classic kb in my x230, I isolated the three pins, but then discovered that trackpoint buttons did not work (probably too much or too little tape). I then removed masking tape and the buttons worked again. So I decided to install it as is and everything works perfectly. I even installed chiclet kb again in x230 to see if backlight would work and it does. Closer inspection revealed that the burnout happened close to the three pins on the classic kb but it seems that it does not have any adverse effect. Putting that classic kb back in x220 does not incur any problems, everything works ok. But it might not be the case for all. YMMV

    • @GenePavlovsky
      @GenePavlovsky 2 года назад +1

      Your problem might have been caused by the masking tape being too thick, resulting in other (not isolated) pins not making proper contact anymore. It's better to use very thin tape, such as kapton tape, which is perfect for this application. I've done the mod to 4 thinkpads, and isolated the pins on all with kapton tape, didn't get any problems.

First, would it be possible to timecode each part of the guide based on which models you're referring to? 5:10 appears to be when you refer to the x230 keyboard swap. I don't bother leaving links anymore because the sellers who have them always change. By the time somebody actually uses the links they're dead or the item is no longer available. For most viewers outside of the US the links aren't very helpful either. I don't have enough time to go back to all of my old videos and constantly update the links for that stuff. A part like the T420 keyboard is easy enough to find with a Google/eBay search, and most of my other videos where I do stuff like this I make sure to list or say the model/part number so someone can easily search for it themselves.

    This is a very helpful video. I'm considering the mod but I'm wondering if there's any keyboard flexing after the swap. Even any minor difference in feeling on different parts of the keyboard is very disturbing to me. Some videos on youtube make them look very unstable. Can this be mitigated?

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Год назад +1

      Mine feels fairly solid, if there is any flexing it's within the tolerances of what the original keyboard would have had. You just have to be very careful with how much you file down the keyboard tabs - too little and it won't fit into the palmrest correctly, too much and it will be loose.
      If you want to do a keyboard swap on a different Ivy Bridge model I know for a fact that you can get a matching xx20 palmrest with the keyboard and install it without any filing or modifications into the X230 or T430s. I in fact did this several years ago with my own X230, I swapped the keyboard and palmrest for ones from an X220 and it fit perfectly without any modifications.

    Interesting. I still use a T520 with the old keyboard, but it has been acting up due to some Intel ME problem, which caused a timer based system shutdown after 30 minutes. This problem has since mysteriously disappeared though. But it was news to me that replacement bioses exist (other than coreboot? which my machine supposedly didn't support.)

      On the T430 the palmrest is different enough from the T420's that you can't just swap them, hence the need to file the metal tabs. On the T430*s* and the *X*230 you can use a T420s/X220 palmrest.

      But as a first tinkering thinkpad I would definitely suggest t430. They seem the most affordable and incrementally upgradable (and over all). The cpu is easier to control thermally than the t540p I have.. you can pretty easily modify the heatsink and the 3740qm is so easy to run over clocked but the 4900mq is very hard to keep cool in my experience.

    I see you took a linux approach to flashing the embedded controller, which i think is really cool, imho. If i could own any Thinkpad, I'd get a Thinkpad W530 and put the Intel Core i7 3920XM @ 3.8Ghz and do an IPS Screen Mod, Classic Keyboard and IvyRain mods to it, and run something like OpenSUSE or Artix Linux as my primary OS, and have Windows installed on a 2nd drive just for compatibility. Is this a viable option? how much does a W530 with the 3920XM pre-installed usually go for on eBay (as I'm not confident in my ability to mod it without breaking anything)
    Also, what form factors and stuff does the W530 support in terms of Drives? does it support M.2? if so, is it SATA only? or can i use NVME? how many drives (and what form factors/types) can i use on it?

      What kind of workloads would your laptop need to deal with? With the CPU you want pre-installed I'm seeing them go for $350-500 on eBay right now (bearing in mind prices right now are a bit inflated because of the pandemic and people working from home).
      In terms of drives the W530 accepts 2.5" SATA, mSATA, and a second 2.5" drive in place of the DVD drive using a hard drive caddy. You can not use NVME with it, however someone in the ThinkPad community is working on an ExpressCard adapter that supports NVME.

While it's not an IPS display, it is a very good screen, I don't feel any deficiency, compared to my X220/X230 IPS screens. Give it a try as is, you might not want to do any IPS mods. I'm in Luxembourg and paid 400 EUR for the laptop (which cames with i7-3820QM) and 140 EUR for an i7-3940XM (you know, on this model the CPU is removable, Socket is called G2)). I think in USA they are cheaper. Replaced the CPU and thermal paste and it's running well and pretty cool (cooler than my X220/X230).
      No M.2 or NVME. You can use regular a 2.5" SATA SSD or HDD in the main drive bay, and one more 2.5" drive in the Ultrabay instead of the DVD drive (you need a special Ultrabay HDD adapter). You can add an mSATA SSD into the slot which is normally either empty or has a WWAN (3G) card, it will run at SATA 2 speeds (max drive speed will be slightly limited by the bus, which is 3 Gbps max - not bad at all, but modern drives can deliver higher speeds than that), while the other two drives run at SATA 3 speeds (6 Gbps max).

      Samsung 860 EVO mSATA is the fastest one I know of. Personally I'm using Samsung 850 EVO mSATA in two of my ThinkPads. Kingston KC600 is a cheaper alternative which is recommended, I haven't tried it. Do note that the mSATA disk will run at SATA 2 speeds (3 Gbps), while if you get a regular SATA SSD in the main drive slot, it will run at SATA 3 speeds (6 Gbps), which will be somewhat faster. Plus, I think no one develops new models of mSATA SSDs anymore, while newer generation SATA SSDs are getting a bit faster (e.g. Samsung 870 EVO).
      If your budget allows it, for an X model go for a large SATA SSD in your main drive bay, and forget about the mSATA slot. For a T or W model, use a SATA SSD (as large as you need / can afford) in your main drive bay, and put a 2 TB HDD in your Ultrabay (you will need a suitable Ultrabay HDD caddy / adapter).

    Hey Sebi, I know you're probably not gonna see this comment but I kinda need help on a lot of stuff.
    So basically, I am getting a ThinkPad T450, which will be used for schoolwork and other personal use. However, besides upgrading the memory I plan on also swapping the keyboard out for one of the classic keyboards, just like the one shown in the video. However, as this is my very first ThinkPad and "laptop" (if you can even call those idiotic weird pieces of junk I even got back then) in general in a real while, I have quite a bit of questions to throw at you. This is due to the lack of me being able to find almost ANY answers to these on the web. Some may make sense to you, some aren't about the keyboard, some may not but all are pretty random and dumb due to my 7th grade brain.
    A) If I don't decide to do all of that weird key rebinding stuff to fix some keys, will some functions like the ThinkLight or ThinkVantage button still work using the keyboard?
    B) Do the pins I need to cover up to prevent the "backlight short" have to be different than the ones you showed in the video need to be different as I will use a different model than yours, or will it be the same?
    C) Are the ribbon cables extremely fragile? I have really unsteady, shaky hands and I would most definitely mess up this procedure as that scenario would be remade like the equivalent of a paper house and a category 5 hurricane.
    D) Have you experienced any issues (what I mean is like the keyboard randomly cutting out under use) when typing?
    E) Does either the new stupid keyboard AND or the classic keyboard get disgusting quickly over time? My hands not only unsteady like previously mentioned, but also sweaty and disgusting.
    F) When I searched up the processor that the laptop has, it says it can take at max 16 gigs of memory (if you're curious, its an i7-5600u). However, if I'm not mistaken the T450 has both modular (slots for ram) and soldered on ram. Does this mean that I can put in a max amount of 16 gigabytes of modular ram and have the soldered on ram go into la-la land? Or for example lets say there's 4gbs of ram already soldered onto the pcb and I have to put in 12 gigs of ram to meet the max 16 gigs?
    G) Was the T520 a better choice? When considering getting this during the time I was on the hunt for a schoolwork laptop after seeing another one of your videos, I found one that I really liked, but it had a small chip in the left corner of the palm rest thingy. Because of this, my dad literally insisted I get something that doesn't have it.
    H) Is replacing the monitor too risky for my zombie equivalent hands? Throughout the history of replacing screens on said janky old hardware, the success rate was minimal to none.
    Alright, those are my seven questions that you probably won't read. It's ok if you don't respond, I understand you have other more important things to do than helping out a brainless child on the internet with a laptop. However, it would be the best and kindest if you did reply as I would now have a lot more info to keep going on as this laptop ages throughout middle school, high school and maybe somehow into college. Thanks! :) [or ;( if you don't reply i guess]
    (also one last question. is that T450 that I'm getting actually sturdy? im setting a goal to somehow make that thing last atleast 4 years.)

    • @SebisRandomTech
      @SebisRandomTech  Год назад +1

      I will try to answer your questions as best as I can, in the order you asked them:
      Regarding A, B, C, and D: The T450 can *not* accept the classic keyboard. The T430 and other xx30 models (X230, T430s, T530, W530, and X230T) are the only models with the new keyboard design that can accept the classic keyboard. Nobody has successfully adapted the classic keyboard to other models because the design of the keyboard, the cables used, and where it screws into the laptop are all different on newer models. It is both physically and electronically impossible. That being said, while I still prefer the classic keyboard's feel and layout the T450's keyboard is still perfectly acceptable.
      E: In my experience if you keep your hands clean and periodically wipe down the keyboard with a microfiber cloth, it won't get all disgusting and gross. Your mileage may vary. If you don't make an effort to keep the laptop clean, it will eventually develop a lot of gunk and dirt.
      F: The T450 has 2 slots for RAM and none soldered on. Each slot accepts up to 16 GB of RAM, for a maximum total of 32 GB (2x16 GB). That being said, I can't think of any use case where you would need more than 16 GB of RAM without the increased performance from said RAM being bottlenecked by the 5600U processor. The previous model, the T440, as well as the T450's thinner variant (the T450s) do have 4 GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard with only one slot for upgrades.
      G: The T520 has the classic keyboard, a better and larger screen (depending on the configuration, the 1366x768 screen is garbage on just about any ThinkPad but the T520's 1600x900 and 1920x1080 screens are decent) and more legacy ports/media support (ExpressCard, DVD drive, Firewire, etc). However, it would be a tough sell if you plan on using it for schoolwork because of its larger size and poorer battery life compared to the T450.
      H: It would be better to try replacing the screen on a less expensive or older laptop first to get the hang of it. I began learning how to do this stuff on my own and generally did it with laptops that had little value and I didn't care about, instead of risking damage to a more modern and expensive laptop. Additionally, if you want to put in a better display then you may want to try to find a T460, which was available with a 1080p display from the factory (the T450 only came with 1366x768 or 1600x900 resolution screens) and natively supports display upgrades (the T450 uses whitelisted displays so only very specific models will work correctly). The T460 is almost identical to the T450 aside from this difference, and also swaps out the VGA port for an HDMI port.
      Hopefully this answers some of your questions! I'll try my best to reply in a timely manner if you have any more.

      @@SebisRandomTech Hello again, just got back from school and typing this on my new ThinkPad. Thanks a lot for this help, you answered all of my questions! It's quite a bummer that I can't use the classic keyboard on my T450, but I guess I can deal with this style. Now, unfortunately as you mentioned (my w key literally just fell off typing the word mentioned) my ThinkPad does in general have a 1366 x 768p resolution screen, and it is absolutely awful. If I look at it with the hinge too far back the colors become dark and if I look at it with the hinge too closed down it looks like heaven. For some reason it said it's running on 1600x900p. I also keep mistaking the screen for a touchscreen every time I try to click on something even though the left and right mouse buttons are right in front of me.
      The keyboard is slightly smooth and shiny (idk if it's supposed to be like that or it was previously owned by a cheeto-dust finger discord mod before the laptop was refurbished and sent to me), but other than that yes it again for the second time is confirmed to be usable. Still getting used to the trackpoint and everything else, and I constantly fear that trackpoint will fall out because I can just pull it out, and then I have to wait another five thousand years for a replacement to arrive.
      Also, I just like having an unnecessary amount of ram because it's funny and I often forget to close out tabs or my laziness takes over and I don't close them. And it's running in like only one channel of ram used besides the soldered ram :(. Upon opening up the laptop on the first day to replace the thermal paste and check some other stuff, the thermal paste was drier than the sahara desert but by complete unluckiness I flippin ran out of thermal paste from my Thermal Grizzly tube, which was a miniscule amount. I couldn't tell the difference before or after the "thermal paste replacement", but at idle that poor i7 was running at 70 degrees celsius and if I can remember it was throttling down to like 1.4 Ghz when playing games like Dream Car Builder or even the darkest pits of hell of roblox on halfish graphics. Again, your information was very helpful and I don't really think I have that many questions to ask for now until going into the future where problems start to come in like the DANG KEYS FALLING OFF WHEN I'M TRYNA TYPE. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your videos!
      (oh my gosh if I wasn't in two accelerated classes I wouldn't have learned to type all of that in the fastest manner possible with all of the worst imaginations of what would happen if I didn't get this in on time)

      Hi, It's me again 4 months later. Update on the laptop: It is actually quite good for personal use. However, I have run into some problems. Remember how I mentioned some keys falling off? The inevitable event has occured in which both my H and J key of the keyboard has fallen off. Back then when it was only the J key that broke, I tried (for some reason) supergluing the key to the rubber membrane that the key makes contact with. This was an awful idea because the key was rotatable back and forth, and was a horrible connection. When I tried to take off this key, it tore off the membrane with it. Because of this, I tried supergluing the membrane back to the little pad where the connection appears to register a key press, which made the situation even worse. And right when I was trying to fix the J key (for the second time actually, mind you this has happened before), the H key popped off. It appears that this issue is caused by thin plastic clips that latch on to the "scissor" mechanism that attaches the key to the keyboard, which break off and render a key useless. I also once ordered a keyboard replacement, but NOT to replace the whole keyboard myself, but just to superglue one of those plastic tabs I mentioned before, which was prior to this event. This rendered a good keyboard useless because I was not able to use that J key either, which means that I wasted $16 due to my lack of computer repair knowledge. So, I ask the question: Should I repair the keyboard again? There are a few key points to state:
      1. I am much better at repairing computers now, knowing that I likely, for example, won't destroy the CPU die by stabbing a screwdriver into it. This means that I am ALSO able to swap out the keyboard because I figured out how to remove those annoying rubbers tabs by inserting a safety pin horizontally to the tab and prying it out.
      2. This, obviously, is not the only keyboard I have. I can also use my external keyboard which, in my opinion, is better than the chiclet design Lenovo made for this keyboard. The only downside is that it would take up a lot of space, if not more, in a carrying bag I would keep my laptop in. Carrying a full sized keyboard with a laptop outside a case would also be sort of dumb to carry by hand.
      Honestly, I think I should just stick with 1. and repair the whole keyboard, but I am still asking to have a second quote to think about. Adding another worry to my laptop isn't convienent either because I have both schoolwork and my computer to work on. I've been looking for a Cooler Master CM690 I - III for sale that isn't going for a ridiculous price. The first one I have seen was actually going for extremely cheap; $60. However, some loser sniper bot decided to rip that chance away from me and win the auction, and I presume that's going to be the "Cooler Master ATX Case NEWWWW!!!!! (NEVER USED, BUY NOW)" for $400 and $90 shipping eBay listing... There are two last options I had in case this failed. One is a CM690 III which is exactly what i'm looking for, but is also a bid. By this, I run the risk of dealing with another sniper bot. This is also colored as black and green, which may match up with some random nVidia logo (if that makes sense???), but it just looks like a rip off NV690. This color theme wouldn't really make sense either using that kind of reasoning because the graphics card I use is in fact an Nvidia Geforce GTX 980 Ti, which is my latest upgrade, but it is not a founders edition. It is, instead, an eVGA subvendor version. The second option is an RC-692, which basically is a CM-690 III advanced. Both are roughly $100 and are likely to disappear off of eBay soon if I don't take action. Either way, it is a better option to just get a new case even if it isn't one of these instead of using my Rosewill SCM-01 because it doesn't restrict so much airflow. My i7-980x has even reported to reach a temperature of 92 degrees celsius, which isn't good because that temperature would (probably) decrease the lifespan of the processor. Although that is hot, it can just be caused by my overclock from 3.6 GHz to 4.0 GHz with the stock DBX-B cooler which may not be the best for overclocking. Unlike the other cases, my SCM-01 has a solid black plastic panel that allows for no airflow besides a little hole at the bottom Rosewill will advertize as "effective cooling". The CM-690 has a meshed front panel (and more!!) which allows for much better airflow and, because of the modularity, support for a bunch of optical drives I would have no reason to use. It is also important to note that the Rosewill has a top loaded power supply, meaning that all of the hot air rises into the cooling fan of the power supply which wouldn't really be a good idea considering that's an 80 plus standard 600w PSU also by eVGA. The CM-690 has a bottom loaded power supply which allows the power supply to draw fresh air through the bottom and not superheated gas from the graphics card or processor. If you do read this, what is your opinion?

    I gouged out the palmrest when i did mine, and it's probably just as good as filling the tabs on the keyboard. Actually, my keyboard does touch my screen when the lid is closed, but i figured that's because the classic keyboard is actually thicker and sticks up further. If you look at the middle mouse button on the keyboard when it's screwed into place, it kind of butterfly's up awkwardly. Oh well. Is anybody else's classic keyboards touching their screens?

      Over the years I've bought by now about 10 keyboads from China (ebay) for several ThinkPads. It's indeed tricky to find a good one, especially these days. These days the market is saturated by some kind of newly manufactured compatible keyboards. They look the part, but are not as good in quality. They have quite distinctive shape of the key cutouts on the backside. Just a few years ago, I haven't seen any classic keyboards with this shape of cutouts. But now the majority of keyboards on offer are those. Once I bought a keyboard from ebay, the photos looked like my original keyboard. However what arrived was this new model, I tried it but didn't like it much. I requested a return (because item was not as described) and in the end the seller refunded the money. Since then, I always ask the seller first, if what I get is exactly what I see, or it can be a compatible substitute, possibly another part number / FRU. Most of the sellers reply that they can't guarantee the exact model I will get, so I don't buy from them. Last keyboard I bought, I had to pay 60 USD for it (plus customs fee / VAT). I think the supply of original keyboards is drying up, there is sometimes a bit of new old stuck surfacing here and there, but for the most part it's either used, used&reconditioned, or new non-original "compatible" keyboards.

    • @GenePavlovsky
      @GenePavlovsky 2 года назад

      @@guyw6284 For me the screen flashes for maybe a split second, not 2-3 seconds. Unless you unplug/re-plug the charger every minute, does the flashing really bother you? If it doesn't cause any other problems, then just ignore it. Normally re-enabling the trackpad in BIOS should make it work again. Try reinstalling the Synaptics/UltraNav driver from Lenovo. Check your device manager if the devices are listed there. I don't use trackpad myself, just the TrackPoint, but if I recall correctly, if it's unplugged or disabled in BIOS, then the UltraNav driver does not claim the TrackPoint, instead the standard mouse driver is used for the TrackPoint, which means middle button scrolling doesn't work. So I have both TrackPad and TrackPoint enabled in BIOS, and just disable the TrackPad in the Fn+F8 menu. Bonus tip: if you use the TrackPoint's middle button scrolling feature, then the middle button doesn't function as a regular button (e.g. you can't use it to close tabs etc). There is a program called tpmiddle (apparently more than one version exists now, I'm using the original one, file name is tpmiddle-0.6.exe), you just put it in your startup list, and all it does is process the middle button clicks. The middle button scrolling, provided by the UltraNav driver, keeps working as well.

      There may be a way to recover your data before it is overwritten, but I don't know very much about that process. I would suggest asking around on a few forums or look into a data recovery service - and don't use the drive at all until you can get the data recovered.
      On most storage devices the data isn't overwritten right away, it is marked for deletion meaning if new data is written to the drive it can overwrite the old data.
