If you want better results painting with spray, you should paint by layers, thin layers, apply one, wait 10-15 minutes, apply the second and so on. Looks very nice. Great job!
Thanks man! I agree, although for this particular top - I think the main issue was paint reactions with the existing rubberized coating, once I finally sanded that almost completely off it went on a lot easier 👍
Thanks brother! A lot of my replies went to spam and they didn't even show up until weeks later! My apologies for the delay - I really appreciate the positive encouragement, thank you!
This is exactly what I was looking for. I also have a thinkpad and i'm planning on painting the scratched rubberized finish with a matte black paint. The japanese stuff is just another level of quality. Thanks for the videos man.
Thanks so much! I've heard a lot of people on r/thinkpad talking about just using plasti-dip to 're'-rubberize the top coating - might be worth looking into for a factory look 👍 Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hello there,im a complete newbie in painting and are in absolute need of a quick guide of what tools should i use other than just paint and sand paper (plus:what type of paint did u use)
If you've never painted before you may want to try a few test subjects before painting something expensive or really care about, but it is just paint and if you mess up (like I did in the video) you can just resand and start over. For the paint jobs I do, I don't need anything other than some sandpaper and regular rattle can spray paint from the hardware store 👍
God, those issues with the paint, it's almost like the Devil was sitting there on his hell throne with a keyboard, pressing buttons just to make sh*t go south... I felt the frustration just watching the extremely condensed version of that debacle. Made me feel a bit better that there are other people who get bogged down in the details because I sometimes get annoyed at myself for being like that. Anyway, that was an enjoyable watch; love the way your stickers came out, and the fact that it's AKIRA themed - such a great look.
Thanks so much man, I will never forget this red paint for the rest of my life, by far the hardest time I ever had with a paint job (and I've painted a ton of things). It was worth the effort though because I think it came out better than I imagined, you can never go wrong with an AKIRA themed anything, it just makes it cooler! Thanks so much for watching man, much appreciated!
Dude... I went through that exact hell when I repainted my spoiler. It took me a little longer... about 8 failed attempts to be exact... but I nailed it! 😁 Nice work man!! 👍
At least you kept coming back to make it right, it's hard to do after so many failed attempts but it's worth it in the end! Thanks man! This is why I prefer matte colors and camo paintjobs, it's a lot easier to hide all the flaws 🤘
I admire your dedication and tenacity :) Scraping off the bad paint is a nightmare fuel for me, also. X230 is a personal favouirte of mine, still using one that I've bought in 2012 on a semi-regular basis. Someday I will try find X230t in good condition, chassis design is awesome and looks like the prop from the Sci-Fi movies from the 80s and 90s. I mean it would for right in as a sentry guns control unit, from "Aliens" :)
Thanks man, this one was kind of a nightmare, but mostly due to paint reactions, I finally got it though. The X230 is one of the best computers ever made in my opinion, perfect small size, still performs well for a long of tasks, etc. My favorite laptop is the Dell XFR 6420, to me that laptop looks right out of the Nostromo from Aliens, I will be painting one very soon on this channel 👍
Hello, c'est quoi cette machine qui fait l'impression des autocollants ? J'adorerai avoir ça, ça m'éviterait de devoir coller de véritables autocollants 😁 En tout cas, le résultat est top, bravo !!!
The rubber coating on Thinkpads is a chemical nightmare. I believe it was the cause of your troubles. I have broken test parts to see what happens there first. I changed quite many screens and displays on my Thinkpads. I play with the older Dell laptops as well. They are cheap on eBay when "broken" and it's not so much work to combine parts and make a good one. The painting comes naturally as an "idea" but you are more pro in my opinion and it's great to watch.
Yes I agree, I think it was the rubber coating as well. I think it also depends on the age/condition of the rubber coating too - my W541 build I didn't have any issue with the paint on that top, so it also could have been the paint itself, not sure. There are so many good cheap laptops out there now, I want to buy them all 😎 Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
What type of paint do you use? Is Acrylic or Lacquer Paint safe? A lot of websites suggest I use Acrylic paint but most spray paint bottles give’s flammable warnings, and a lot of websites say that it will become combustible once it dries, has it effected the temperature in anyway? What if its just a bit of paint?
It's just hardware store rust-oleum in a rattle can. Almost all spray paints are extremely flammable when shot out of the can, but not after the paint has dried. If your laptop is getting hot enough to ignite cured paint, then all of the plastic inside and on the case would have already melted away by now 👍 I wouldn't worry about it and just paint away. If you're really afraid, do a tester on some scrap plastic you don't care about and subject it to a heat gun or hair dryer to test its thermal properties and see how it reacts or what it does when exposed to a lot of heat.
Well, \technically\ it is possible, not very feasible though due to BGA mount (also glued...) www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4xumj9/has_anyone_here_tried_to_upgrade_the_cpu_of_a_x230/ You'd need a procedure and tool like this: ruclips.net/video/lFwK47eEggA/видео.html IMO It'd be cheaper and easier just to swap the mobo, maybe I'll do that someday :)
Im japane so Im not good at English. but I understand youre Love of AKIRA & 7row keyboard!!
Thank you so much! AKIRA is one of the best ever made, and ANSI layout is just what I'm used to for so long 💻 thank you for watching!

Thank you! It's an industrial UV printer, it costs like 20,000 USD to own, so not very economical for single user use 👍
