Oh son...Daniel....Friend. I Love you too! You know I watch all your reviews! This was my 1st time hearing this wonderful touching song and I'm so glad it was with you. As I was listening I started tearing up and became over whelmed with emotions that words could not do justice. Reminds me of a song you did call "The leader of the band".
I'm truly blessed to realize how proud of you I am while I'm awake! Understanding the transition of moving passed you calling me Father and me calling you Son. Thank you for reviewing this song. It meant a lot to me.

Both James and his father both served in the British Army and the culture of the army and being English meant that they did not freely share their feelings or emotions between each other though James said he always felt loved by his father. So when his father said that he had stage 4 kidney disease and that James and his siblings were not matches he decided to write this song so that his father would know how much he loved him. James has also said that this is the song he is most proud of. It wasnt until after the video and song came out that a donor was found and the father is recovering. Apparently all that were at the video recording was crying except for the father... who said... I am not dead yet!

I am so glad that I checked this out, never having heard of James Blunt. The lyrics were perfectly crafted, and while the video certainly enhanced the effect, I think I would have been just as moved without it. If featuring this video caused just one son or daughter to have that long overdue conversation with a parent and tell him/her how much they have meant, you have performed a valuable service. Too late for me to do this, don't wait until it's too late for you!

  • @jeffstevens4262
    @jeffstevens4262 3 года назад +3

Yes, that's his dad with him in the video. When he says 'I'm not your son, you're not my father' it was because he wanted to say his piece not as a son, but as one human being to another. I heard this was the first time James had sung this song to his father, so you can understand the emotion and the tears. Both men are former officers in the British military. I also read somewhere that James refused to use 'Auto-Tune' despite the record company insisting, and what you see is a wonderful example of raw reality. What a beautiful song, delivered so amazingly and so powerfully. Thank God his father managed to find a donor for his kidney which was full of cancer and his condition was diagnosed as terminal.

I never heard this before and my heart has just been ripped from my body. Last year I lost my only sister due to neglect in a rehab facility. I'm 72 and she was 83 big age difference but I loved her dearly. She had rheumatoid arthritis and broke a bone in her foot and because of Covid surgery was not recommend. Her doctor said rehabbing the foot was better. She was sent to rehab and my two nieces kept calling me to get the rehab place to let them talk to her or see her and was denied. I'm in a different state do I could not get on a plane to get there because I have pulmonary disease and is high risk for Covid. When she was finally taken to hospital after 4 weeks in rehab she had a stage four bedsore on her back and gangrene on the foot to be rehashed. The hospital decided to amputate the leg in order to save her life but she died a few hours before the surgery. I'm very upset that I wasn't able to get those monsters in the rehab place away from her maybe I would have had the chance to say goodbye. I miss her terribly .

My dear Mr. "Dicon Dissectrional": Many, many thanks for you bringing James Blunt's classic song, "Monsters" to a larger audience. As I have posted previously on various RUclips sites about this extraordinary composition: If for whatever reason one does not "get it" you need to rethink all those many facets that you may be using to define yourself as human. So much love, trial, pain and acceptance in the song -- and, really in the end, so MUCH to be celebrated and cherished.

I was at work and my cousin she told me the news. I went to a limbo state and when I went to my manager I totally broke down. All the lost time hating her but with her passing things went so clear enough. If there’s an after life I wonder if she forgave me. “Monsters” by James Blunt
    PUBLISHED OCTOBER 19, 2019
“As one can deduce by listening to the chorus, James Blunt’s “Monster” is a song in which the singer is addressing his father. Indeed it is true-to-life. And as of the release of this track it appears that the death of James’ dad, Charles Blount, is imminent. So being unable to express how he feels about the situation through conventional wording, James has instead decided to put his emotions into a song.
And outside of the general sense of sadness that is relayed, there are two main sentiments James seems to expressing. One is that when his father does depart, he wants there to be peace (i.e. forgiveness) between the two of them. But more to the thesis of the piece is that James is ready to take on the responsibility of being the man of the family. In fact even before acknowledging the addressee as his father, Blunt instead establishes himself as another ‘grown man’, i.e. his equal. And the title is based on the idea of him telling his father that he should not take the worries of the here and now into the afterlife. For in light of all that is transpiring it is now James’s “turn to chase the monsters away”, as in deal with the major issues which are facing the family”.
    Updated January 17, 2020
James Blunt has revealed his father Charles Blount is doing well after receiving an organ donation following his fight with stage-four kidney disease. After a desperate search for a donor last year (the You’re Beautiful singer was not a match), James told The Times that a cousin - ‘now a very, very close cousin!’ - came forward for the job.

Good evening, Daniel. I stopped to watch your reaction as a young male to a song addressing some of the tough dynamics between sons and fathers...one of the most problematic relationships in family networks. I'm 67, former prof in sociology, and work in cultural development now. I found it interesting how you took James' voice...and made it relating things his father felt...rather than hearing James' assertion of letting go. "I....I...won't read you your wrongs or your rights.' is where you begin to assert 'mutual understanding'. I would urge you to step back and listen to this again. 'They' aren't speaking...i.e., father and son...but 'I' is speaking...the son. We have no knowledge of the level of whatever emotional roller coaster Life has been between them. His father has been battling kidney disease...suggesting setting of...hospital, hospice. 'They' turn out the lights...would be son's visiting father in a place of demise...hospital, hospice...etc. In stepping away from reading someone's 'wrongs or rights' is son's assertion...of laying down the sword and accolades that judgment brings between. Notice that the father isn't saying he won't also do it. It's the son saying...'enough...the time is gone'.
And if you follow the very real tears of James singing...you can see...he's struggling with closing a space that he has felt for however long. "I'm not your son. Your not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye". Can you hear the son asserting the 'stage' he wants his father to understand that as the father's son...James wants his dad, invites his dad...to join him on that stage? Not that they both feel the same thing or can...but asserting a definition into the transition space that calls to his father to let go...and join him in the solemn equality imposed by Death's presence? No need to forgive, no need to forget.' Hear James assert the space he wants his dad to understand that is true, in this moment for James? True...as invitation to the father to join him.
I attended a memorial service over the weekend for one of my closest friends that died of COVID almost a year ago. COVID claimed him after having reached basically dead by CTE, the disease that wastes old athletes who grew up using their heads as battering rams to get to college and the pros. I shared with my 94 yr-old father that I would be traveling for the memorial, one of my friends my father admired, and shared some greater time with my father as we checked on each other...with my father slowly exiting the planet in a senior depression in which he is so conscious of everyone is gone...and nothing seems to reignite his curiosity and sharp-wit. We adjusted our relationship and its openness, decades ago after the death of my mother. Our relationship is very powerful today...and yet, despite the decades of recovery...there's still a gap...still judgment...he brings easily forward in his ignorance of my life and how I live. I opted to respond to you because I've counseled/coached/listened to a lot of males who had relationships of struggle with fathers...and I could feel almost an innocence in how, a number of times...you asserted some presence of equality...some motion of both actors doing something similarly. I would urge you to listen to how you listen through valued images you might hold...such as what a great relationship between parent and child might look like...as opposed to just hearing, listening, reading...what the author's voice might be saying. Son's seldom pass through childhood, young adulthood, or adulthood...with a father not hanging in the background...judgment ready. I chose to study and 'coach' in this area...because the mess between males so shapes the death of children in the world...and that's despite how much males assert they love their kids...the omnipresence of violence suggests we have a lot of pretty words...innocent images...and understand little what we're actually doing in a world where children are treated like trash.
I offer this...because I can see you're moved...and want to contribute. I think you might find the experience even more moving when you hear the author in his letting go...and invitation to right relationship. mark

What an emotional song with such far reaching lyrics. So important is a strong father and song relationship that many do not have which is unfortunate. Cherish the times you have.

James' last name is actually spelled "Blount" just as his father's is. As a performer, he chose the simpler spelling so as not to confuse his fans about pronunciation. In actuality, the different spellings are pronounced in exactly the same way. James Blunt is NOT related to Emily Blunt as stated by me earlier. The two have met a joked around about how many times they are asked that.

You should react to James’ song “Carry You Home”. It got me through the days after my little sister died from Stage 4 colon cancer that had spread throughout her body. I was with her during her chemo and stayed by her side as she laid on her deathbed. She died early on the morning of October 28, 2009.

It was popular to poke fun at James Blunt at one stage. Then he got in on taking the p.ss out of himself and he's very funny doing it.

This is true; his Twitter put-downs are classic! :)
      Example:
Twitter troll: "James Blunt just has an annoying face and a highly irritating voice"
      James Blunt: "And no mortgage"
      :)

"before they turn off the lights"..In hospitals and Nursing Homes, they turn of the hall and ancillary lights in the evening. So Im thinking the father is hospitalized and the son is at his bedside.

First listen for me. But I’m a huge fan of JB’s first two albums (Back to Bedlam and All the Lost Souls). Recommend Tears and Rain, One of the Brightest Stars.
Ps, Routine by Steven Wilson is also a great emotional song. The video is amazing.

I just want to add that the first viewing of Routine should be the official animated video. The live version recorded in an empty Royal Albert Hall is great for a second viewing.

Another great song by him (and easily my favorite song of his) is “No Bravery”, where he talks about the things he saw and experienced while serving in the Kosovo War.

Too many people only get around to expressing their feelings in a eulogy when it’s too late. All that matters is what you say when people are alive so however difficult it is to open up to your loved ones, get on and say it now!

Just as a footnote. James Blunt as a Captain during the Serbia Kosovo war may have help prevent WW3 ,in that when ordered by the American senior General Clark to "remove the Russians " from the occupied airport Blunt refused and said "he would not have his men start WW3 " he was backed up later by the British General Jackson . Do not think it would have started WW3 but would you bet your life on it.

How have you not heard of Ed Sheeran??? You really need to go and listen to his duet version of his song Perfect with Italian opera star Andrea Bocelli. It really is perfect!!!
Great response to this song, by a great artist. I would suggest checking out his songs Carry You Home, Same Mistake, Goodbye My Lover, and of course his breakthrough hit You're Beautiful. He has a unique voice I think and send to be a good guy. In fact all of his album Back to Bedlam and much of his second album, if not all of it, All The Lost Souls, are with checking out. Many of his songs I would say are heartfelt. Not quite like this one, I don't think anything could quite so that, but in other ways.
He served in NATO Forces in Kosovo after the breakup of Yugoslavia in a unit ahead of front lines locating and targeting Serbian forces for NATO bombing raids and notably said he would have refused an order to forcibly take Pristina Airport from the Russians after an order by the American NATO Commander of operations if his superior British General hadn't already refused the order on the ground that it might start WWIII!!!
