A dying parent's main concern isn't for themselves, it's for their children. When he says 'im not your son, you're not my father' it's a way of telling his father he doesn't have to worry about him. He's a man now.

"I'm not your son, you're not my father" has nothing to do with a strained relationship. It merely puts out there that they are now both adults, and their relationship as adults and friends is now just as important as the original relationship of father and son. James does still call him "Daddy."

I heard it differently. I hear that phrase as "Any baggage the two had in the past, doesn't matter" because it is also attached to 'I know all of your mistakes and you know mine". But when he says 'The time is gone' he means the time to hash out differences is over with and behind them.

That is the phrase they used to say goodbye when James was deployed to Kosovo in the military to make it less difficult. That's why he wrote it into the song because it was personal between them

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney & is doing okay now. If this song doesn't get to you emotionally, there is something wrong with you. This song resonates with me as I was my dad's caregiver for 5 years until he passed away 3 years ago.

Yes, it was his father sat next to him. At the time this was made James's father was in end stage kidney failure, and James wrote this as a farewell. The tears are real in this, which makes it even more powerful. Thankfully his father had a kidney transplant after this was released and is doing OK now.
    Beautiful song, and beautiful reaction.

When he says "I'm not your son, you're not my father" it's a metaphor for them being equal. They are saying goodbye as equals man to man. James is respecting the fact that his father is another human and isn't sort of pitying him in a way because of his illness. He still sees his father as a strong figure even though he might be terminally ill. It's a really powerful line in my opinion.

He's saying,"we're both men. Peers". Not father and son but two adult men. Their relationship is great! He's trying to comfort his dad. His dad who, after giving a kidney, needed a donor. Touch and go. They found a donor and dad's ok.Of course that's his dad. He looks just like his father.

Such a sad song played in the chord of C minor .. yes it is his Dad there.. fortunately a happy ending as his father received the kidney transplant. Both with a strong military background, James had grown to know his father as a friend and fellow man, and in this moment they are two men in a room showing strength and pride, saluting each other goodbye, acknowledging defeat.

I felt the same way as you about him, but this song was incredible, This was very real, as has already been said, a distant cousin having heard the song came forward and was amazingly a match as a kidney donor. At the time though, there was no hope, and yes the lyrics might be confusing, he's not saying "You're not my father, I'm not your son" as a bad thing, it's more that they now as adults have a better understanding of each other, and all the issues of the past are not important now.

  • @milissaleatherwood6837
    @milissaleatherwood6837 2 года назад +7

"I'm not your son, you're not my father" is meant to be a way to say that they are equals. This is a song that James wrote to say goodbye to his father when they thought that his dad was going to die. He had stage 4 kidney failure and they couldn't find a kidney. The video was him singing it to his dad for the first time and when the producers wanted to edit out his voice cracking from the emotion James said no.
After the release of this video a distant cousin came forward and was a match and the kidney transplant went well.
James and his dad were both in the royal navy and weren't able to show emotion in front of each other. The emotion here has brought them closer together. 💜

Yes, his Dad is in the video and he did this for James. James would only do one take with no auto tune. Doing this they found a first cousin they didn’t know about. He was a match to give his Dad a kidney. James and his sisters were not. It is hard to hit some high notes when you cry.
He means that nothing matters because they are friends. So it is all okay to say goodbye. I still cry when I watch this because the first time was like being hit, I knew how sick he was. His Dad donated one of his kidney’s to someone who needed it. Then his kidney failed.

James and his father were both military men. James was actually a tank commander in the first gulf war. When he was being deployed, his father would say: "You're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye...". This song breaks me every time I hear it. The video was shot in one take, because James wanted the emotion to be raw and genuine. James’s father was and still is his hero, His father was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal kidney disease and this was written as a goodbye. In an positive irony, the song was so popular, it got the attention of a distant relative who turned out to be a match for a kidney donation and his dad is now doing well he spent the whole of 2020 in isolation 👍🏻😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A year ago I lost my beautiful Mum and I sat in the hospital completely lost by her bed, hoping and praying that it was a nightmare and I would wake up with my Mum telling me off (even though I am 45!). I found this song last October and it hit me how much this related to my situation. Over the years my Mum and I would have fights and argue even when we were in the wrong, but sitting by her hospital bed, none of that mattered because I love her so much and she was the best Mum for me and nothing else mattered. I only wish I could have chased the monsters away because maybe she would still be here. Sorry for the long comment but this song resonates with so many people and James Blunt sung what I couldn't put into words which makes it so beautiful but so painful at the same time 😔😢💗. Much love to you both xxx

I see that the comments have pretty well explained the story behind this song...but something that struck me, was in the song James says it is HIS turn to chase the monsters away. In a very poetic way, James did, in fact, chase his fathers monster away. It was because of this song, that a distant cousin learned his father needed a kidney, but was of a rare tissue type, and so was unlikely to survive much longer. The cousin got tested and by a miracle he was a match! The monster was gone.
Incidentally, Dad had donated a kidney years before so only had one as it was. Just a beautiful story all around

My take on the line 'I'm not your son...' is that when you are faced with the reality of someone passing away for real then reality shifts dramatically and then any relationship you had up to that point is not important - what's important is two human beings relating to each other as equals, if you like or more simply as human being to human being.
May I suggest Ray of Light by Madonna (the video clip won a Grammy) - it's suprising and a blast of good feelings plus the video will probably make you giddy with delight 😯🥴 !!

I think a lot of Men relate to this song as we are so bad at sharing our troubles worries and emotions in general.
We all like to think we are tough and need nobody and this song has a feeling of strength and masculinity.
The reality is we are not but when we hear this song it releases those emotional weakness we have because I think we all know we are as indestructible as we think.

Just to add to other's comments, the line "I'm not you son, you're not my father" is a way to de-emotionalise a situation, sometimes used when fathers waved goodbye to their sons in times of war. Both James and his father were members of the British Army.

The true meaning of "I'm not your son, you're not my father" is that they were both in the Army, whenever either of them went on deployment they would say goodbye as adults and fiends not as father & son. It was a lot easier for them both.
They did the song in one take as James wanted to show the emotion of it
His father who was beside him in the song did not understand why everyone was crying, including the camera man.
He said afterwards why cry I am still here.
I got those facts from an interview James did.

The comments below about - I'm not your son etc. are wrong. James and his father were both in the British army and when James was leaving to serve in kosovo - going to war - James was nervous about going to war and saying goodbye toi his parents, and his father said just think of it as I'm not your father your not my son we are just two men saying goodbye. This statement resonated with James and was then used by James in this song when he thought his dad was going to die of cancer.

As everyone says, James had just found out that his father would die without a kidney transplant and none of the family had matched so they thought there was nothing they could do except watch him die. Later, a remote relative was found who did match his father and they were able to do the transplant. The line, 'I'm not your son, You're not my father' was just his way of saying he wanted to say goodbye as an equal - an adult- rather than as a child of his father.

James Blunt was a captain in the military who served in Nato conflict in the Kosova war and his Dad is a colonel and he said to James before he went to the conflict your not my son I'm not your father were just 2 men saying good bye the line in the song

I believe but not sure that the Line your not my father I'm not your son is from a poem or a quote ( all though can't remember).

I consider this song a 'bot-check' for YT reactors. Congratulations, you passed, kinda. You proved you are human i think. Your lovely wife seemed more moved than you. Thank you for posting it.

Your not my son your not my father. Well clearly they are father and son and much beloved too. But I think James is really trying to say He's a grown man now and his dad doesn't need to worry about him. Ergo, they are two grown men saying goodbye. I guess it's a a way of trying to lessen the pain.

Maybe try 'It's Nice to be Alive' by Ball Park Music, for a more positive tone.

I challenge you to try something different ,Stryper is a christian medal band that got to gather in the 80s with songs like more then a man, the way, to hell with the devil. They are still rocking today with a newer album from 2018 with songs like the valley and sorry.the newest album 2020 has songs like do unto others, blood from above. With some of the best vocals I have ever heard the harmonies great, guitar solos good, Keep in mind this band come back 35 years later to still rock out and doing it well. If you start with one of the 80s songs you will not be disappointed. Thank you for your attention.

I think he is trying to simplify their goodbye. It's easier to say we're just two men saying goodbye than it is to say goodbye to your dad.

There is nothing wrong with being strong and there is nothing wrong with being broken. Show it to the right persons and you are fine. But never show it to the wrong persons.

Hes saying other than saying, son and father. Were 2 men talking to each other? And just saying Goodbye, nothing to do with father and son.

Guys, I love that James Blunt song, but it is a bit serious, so if you want to review something very light, ridiculous - and unfortunately there's no singing - I'll link you to an `interview' with John Farnham from the late 1980s, clearly after he'd released the album "Whispering Jack"
The `interviewer' is Pixie-Ann Wheatley, who was a character created and played by writer, comedian, Magda Szubanski, on a comedy show called Fast Forward. At that time there were a whole slew of comedy shows on Australian TV, some of which probably wouldn't make it to air now, being considered too risque for the current day censors.
    Here's the link. It's only a little over 3 minutes: ruclips.net/video/jN5IytT9P2k/видео.html
The mention of Sadie the Cleaning Lady refers to John's first hit, a boppy pop song from the late 1960s.

If you want something still Rock n Roll but light hearted, try watching a Van Halen video... Maybe "Jump" or "Hot For Teacher" or "Panama"...
