Yes. In fact THE meaning... very much a message prevalent in the 1960s. Not at all a reference to an actual sibling, except by extension.

OMG I love The Hollies !!!!! "The story of the song ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother’ is a poignant one that has stood the test of time. This song was written by Bobby Russell while battling cancer, and it was later performed by The Hollies in 1969, reaching high positions on several charts worldwide. The song’s title comes from the logo for Boys Town, a community established in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan in Omaha, Nebraska, where homeless and troubled boys could receive help. The phrase “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” captures the spirit of Boys Town and has become synonymous with charity."

father flanagan got the quote from a book - In his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus, James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: "No, he's not heavy; he's my brother."

I always assumed it had something to do with the war considering when it came out. Maybe it was in a war movie or something. But I'm glad I got the story of where the title came from. I'm still not sure what it's about, why it was written. Who was Bobby talking about carrying? I have to look up the lyrics and see if there's anything there. Thanks for the info, everyone! ✌

They had so many hit songs such as "The Air That I Breathe", "Bus Stop", "Stop Stop Stop", "On A Carousel", "Carrie Anne", "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)", "Here I Go Again", "Look Through Any Window", "King Midas In Reverse", "Jennifer Eccles" etc. "Graham Nash" was originally in this group & left in 1968 to form "Crosby, Stills & Nash".

    Boys Town
In 1918, Reuben Granger, an older boy at Father Flanagan's Home for Boys, carried Howard Loomis, a boy with polio, up and down the stairs. When Father Flanagan asked Reuben if carrying Howard was difficult, Reuben replied, “He ain't heavy, Father… he's m' brother”. The phrase has become iconic and symbolizes the spirit of Boys Town.

This reaction is kind of the essence of the '60's (and 70's), whereby the artists were real and sharing themselves live and people like you listened and discussed the music and themes. The Hollies were simply awesome, and kind of heavy, too. They were pros, so all the music is good, even if you don't click with it all.

This song was written back in (1969). It's about a very famous boys' home in Omaha Nebraska USA known as "Boys Town." They made a movie about it back in (1938) starring Spencer Tracey as Father Flanagan who started (Boys Town) and Mickey Rooney. The story goes... When it was time to go to dinner a priest saw a boy carrying another boy on his back and ask the boy can he help carrying him to the dining hall. The boy replied, "That's okay Father He Ain't Heavy, He's, My Brother." Today they have a statue in Boys Town of a boy carrying another boy piggyback. The song was written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell who were visiting Boys Town. They heard about the story and decided to write a song about it. And the rest is history. Another monster hit by the Hollies is their (1972) "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress." This was one of their greatest hits. It was a banger.

The Hollies are one of my favorite British bands. This song is by far the most touching of all they did. Graham Nash got his start here before joining up with Crosby and Stills. This song is perfect for you two beautiful, socially conscience lovebirds haha. I knew that you would love it. 😍 As always a great reaction. Thanks. ☮

Thinking, "You're gonna like this". A founding member of the Hollies was Graham Nash. He left and went to L.A. where he, David Crosby (Byrds) and Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield), formed the super group, Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN).

The Hollies are a great band & have had several hits over the years. You will enjoy listening to the hits they've had over the years. I was about 8 years old when I first heard them back in the mid-1960s.

Great song! In the 60s and 70s people cared about their fellow man. With what happened in the United States today, I am energized and filled with hope.
