This song was done in 1 recording. James wanted it to be authentic. To catch all the emotions. James and the crew were all crying and his dad asked them why are they crying, I’m still alive. James’s dad had stage 4 kidney disease. When the song was released I heard it was a first cousin they didn’t know about, came forward and donated. His dad recovered and is doing well. The words ‘I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just 2 grown men saying goodbye’ was when they went on deployment. They said it to each other.

“Monsters” was a heartfelt tribute to his father. The emotional track reflects the deep bond between them and a touching farewell. In the music video for “Monsters,” James Blunt sings directly to the camera, his eyes welling up with tears...The video is so powerful because sitting beside James Blunt is his real-life dad, Colonel Charles Blount. who was a former cavalry officer, battling stage 4 chronic kidney disease. The song captures the raw emotions of facing mortality and saying the things one wants to say to a loved one before it’s too late 💗 I can never get through this, without crying..........

He wrote this song for his father that was in stage 4 liver failure with a rare blood type and no donor in sight. In this video he was singing this beautiful goodbye to his dad for the first time. He wanted it recorded with no auto tune so you could feel the real emotion that he was feeling. I think the off pitch parts make it even better. Thankfully because of the popularity of this song his dad was saved by a donor who came forward with a match.

James’s father had donated a kidney years ago and when this video was done James’s dad was dying of stage 4 kidney disease. A match had not been found until a distant cousin saw this video and was tested and was a match . The cousin donated his kidney to James’s dad.

@@apatheticempathyYou are wrong. James did sing this song once to his father while in the hospital. He then asked him if he could be in the video. The video was all shit in one take too. All reactions were genuine. At the end of the recording, everyone except his father was crying. In typical upper class (posh) fashion, his father stated, "I'm not dead YET"!! He then had to "pull" everyone together.

I read that “I’m not your son, you’re not my father. We’re just two grown men saying goodbye.” Is something that his father used to say to him whenever James was deployed. They are both ex-military and it was a way of retaining the ‘stiff upper lip’ and not being overly emotional. The fact that James uses the phrase with such feeling emphasizes that these words always meant so much more to him.

The emotion in this song: 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤
Your parents have done a good job when you're treated like an adult and not a child anymore. Losing your parents is the worst. It's brutal. I miss mine every day.

  • @youngthing12
    @youngthing12 3 месяца назад +2

James and his father were both military men. James was actually a tank commander in the first gulf war. When he was being deployed, his father would say: "You're not my son, I'm not your father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye...". This song breaks me every time I hear it. The video was shot in one take, because James wanted the emotion to be raw and genuine. His father had stage 4 kidney disease and he had only one kidney as he had donated a kidney years ago, the one kidney was only working at 11%. Due to James releasing this song a distant relative came forward and was a match, he spent 2020 in isolation and is doing well now 👍🏻😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this amazing video to the wonderful UK based charity 'Help For Heroes' who do incredible work to support ex-servicemen and ex-service women. As both James and his dad were former officers in the British military, it was a fantastic gesture and I salute him for that.

My dad died of dementia 6 weeks ago and everything about this song speaks to me. I was with him almost every day the last 3 years and at the end. This song is a perfect account of the end of my dad's life and my experience with him. The dementia caused him to see a lot of things that weren't there, sometimes scary things, and I would play along and tell him I'd chased the things he was seeing away, and he would be happy and calm down. I chased the monsters away, as he did for me when I was a kid too scared to go to sleep.

For me, the song represents a grown child's turn to take care of a parent. Sickness, memory issues, fears of the unknown.. all the monsters hiding in the closet that are now the adult child's turn to chase away and take care of everything.. leaving the light on, to chase away all the fears.. rest easy, it's my turn now. I love the pat on the arm by the father to the sons arm.. That father still reassuring the son who's emotional singing the song.

James' sister wrote a beautiful poem and James based this song on her poem. Both James and his father, Charles, are ex-military. Their family are very much upper class (posh) which is evident in James voice (accent) and his unique singing style.
The line, "we are two grown men just saying goodbye" is also very poignant. When James was shipping out to Kosovo (Balkans) to fight back in '99, James said this very line to his father. Charles was a Colonel and James was a Captain, both in the British Army.

I have heard that that line you refereed to "I'm not your son your not my father" was something his father said to him only in reverse When James was getting ready to leave for Kosovo. James was a Capt. then and his father was a colonel. James also sang this song in a video with the Hawaiian kid you you were talking about.

James is well known for creating deep and poignant lyrics for his songs - many of which are based on his real-life experiences, like this one when it really looked like he was going to lose his dad to Stage 4 kidney cancer. I can also recommend 'Carry You Home' and 'No Bravery' - both based on real-life events while he was in Kosovo serving in the army. (He's actually credited with preventing a potential World War 3 situation by directly disobeying an order from a superior, so he's also a war hero.)

It’s alright to cry homie. Men gotta be comfortable to cry, show/communicate their emotions. It’s not healthy to keep it in anyways. I only say that because you said “I don’t want to cry.” “This makes you wanna cry.” “I’m not trying to cry.”
Being vulnerable healthiest and honestly imo the most intriguing in music like this, comedy, emcees/lyricists, TV shows, movies, etc.
    You’re a dope reactor overall though 🫡.
Ian’s version on America Idol audition hurt me too and was brilliant too.
Both made this early 40s man cry about my early 70s super close pops (and father of 10/7 years old).
