Doing good work man. I know you can get punished by the algorithm for not posting within your usual niche, and I appreciate the fact that you hold helping out whoever might be looking for a tutorial over trying to get as many algorithm points as you can
Even if there probably aren't many people out there specifically repairing buttons on this specific synth, videos like this are so damn helpful and are a godsend to the few people who do happen to end up dealing with the same issue. Content like this is much appreciated even if it may not get very many views; although I'm sure there are people like me who watch regardless because synth internals are super interesting to learn about, especially analog ones!
Fiexd mine last weekend. Thanks for the video! I changed all the switches and retouched all the soldering points (Connectors, leds and diodes) Now is working like a charm
My D-110 makes me want a D50 real bad. Good to see this repair documented, as there is a local listing for a unit with non-functioning switches. I’ll have to contact seller for more info, but this video was rather serendipitous today 😂 great video as always friend!
I enjoy these repair videos in part because they do give me the idea of picking up some synths that need repairs and fixing them as a cheaper way to get my hands on some of these vintage synths I would like to have around.
I just found a D-50 that needs a bit of love and this was exactly what I was looking for! Several of the patch and bank buttons don't work so I really appreciate you including the link to the specific part.
Glad to help your views out a little. You have one of those soothing voices that are wonderful to hear as background noise, so I am happy to run your more esoteric videos in the background while I work on the computer.
I'm in the middle of restoring a D20, this is helpful. Most of my buttons are sluggish. I had to solder some jumpers on the key controller, because three of my keys were dead and no amount of cleaning or using a lead pencil brought them back. I literally just reformated to factory defaults. I have one more key to clean up, some how it lost it's soft touch but works if you pound on it, so my Multi-Timbral/Performance button is sticky. You have to hold it down, in order for it to activate. So I'm going to move forward with replacing the buttons. I bought this for less than $200. It'll be a great synth when I get it all finished. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks so much for making this. I'm not a newbie with soldering or repair, but it really was nice to have a quick tour and see what I'd be working with before popping my D50 open.
These repairing videos as well as the synthesizer and effect units reviews are great. I want a soldering iron and become an electrician, I am not kidding. Please continue. I am also interested in your sampling work. Hell, I am also unemployed but I really find your videos inspiring because I want to find a new path. Rock on, Jorb!
Pretty much all synths that came out around or after the D-50... Korg M1, Yamaha SY, etc. have to be opened from the bottom. It's a pain for sure! That dirt and grime is fairly common, especially if the synth was stored in a garage, etc. Thanks for doing repair videos, I'll keep watching ;)
Hi I did it already for my Korg M1. Today I bought the ones for the D50 , or a part of them. the shop didn't have enough of them in stock. upcoming weeks will be my turn to repair the legandary D-50. thanks for showing up how to do.
I will be diving into my Wavestate as it seems, the utility button is no longer working. Nice video. By the way, your East Beast and West Pest demos definitely helped to sell me. I love those little synths.
I never would have Imagined you needed to switch 50 tactile switches! I've found most used keyboards get super dusty over time. I got a Juno g and it was filled with dust and cat hair
Isn't that surprising, that ALL of them were in bad shape? There's a good chance reseating the ribbon cables had some positive impact as well, and I wouldn't have had to replace them all, but checking continuity, dozens weren't working right. Cat hair is worse. lol
Very helpful! Thankfully, every switch on mine still works but I have 4 or 5 dead keys that I've been putting off doing for years. It's basically a sound module now but I'm missing playing that beautiful keyboard.
Wish I had good footage of any key repair stuff, I've done it a few times but never had the camera on. One more thing to worry about while working, I guess.
Jorb, are you an electronics guy or more of a tinkerer? I've done surgery on some of my gear (displays, batteries, odds-n-ends) but I always just asked questions and tried to figure it out as I went and tried not to screw anything up or dig too deep. If you are knowledgeable on power supplies I would be very interested in any videos you make. Good video!
Thanks Jorb, I know the repair vids probably don’t do well viewer wise but I find them super helpful 🤔 - Dont have a D50 but this will be really useful guide as I’m sure I’ll have to do this to one of my synths I the near future ☺️. ( ps. I did send you an email about the ax60 , not important just seeing if you received it?,thanks).
Can i ask please how you clean/repair the aftertouch strip? there is a cover on the strip from above and I don't know if I take it off or if I will be able to put it back on Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Just picked up a D-50. No sound and 1 button is flaky..so I have opened it up hey but this video helped me see how you did it. Do you where I can get some of the buttons?
I bought a D20 a few months ago, which I thought I would get lucky that it will all good but I was not all the knobs are dead (not individully knob, but all of them), which is more dificult to analise the problem. the keys are oke but the only sound that come out is just piano ... you can't change it to any sound else and they happenned to divided to double mode ... lower keys are single finger mode and the upper key are pianos sound.... Can you please give me some advice what would I should do ..... ps. the volume and pitch control are working knob = Tact switch BIG thanx
I got a d50. It makes sounds but there’s a ton of noise on the output. I replaced all electrolytics, battery, audio jacks, still no luck. I’m dreading it might be a deeper issue. Any insight or ideas?
Hello , can I ask a question please? I’ve got a d-50 and I got a mpc 2000xl buttons switch set … can someone tell me if these kind of buttons can could work with the d-50 please ?
Buy new ones but look good they are not chinese ones and the prices online are much to high. I bought them in a local shop in Belgium at 20 % of the online prices. I payed 16 € for 40 pieces.
@@JorbLovesGear I’m certain you’re explaining it right, but my brain was having trouble processing. I do have a d50 and the buttons don’t want to work all the time, so I still watched lol!

Yeah, I have found myself relying on videos in the same vein for years, nothing as helpful as watching it done.

Hey bro, there is a level at which fixing a synth is like fixing a piece of your life. I have always loved doing it. "If you synth, you solder"

I'm well practiced with soldering and diagnosing shit, but not much proper engineering experience.
Just been fixing shit since like high school.
I've found this can be followed similarly for 90s Roland digital keys as well in how the design layout worked
XP series which should be similar to JV I'd reckon :)

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's the same parts used in the Korg M1?
These little panel mount closed-contact tact switches are really common, maybe so.
