Interesting. Mine is growing like a weed. Also in Pon, same Lechuza pot. Recently took a huge 3-leaf head cutting that I air layered in Pon and sold it. Chopped the rest and have a few going. And there’s a second plant that’s in my daughter’s room, also growing like a weed.
I’ve found they are prone to spider mites. So I shower them regularly. Which is tedious, because I can hardly fit them through doors and into the tub.

I absolutely adore that your benchmark is a golden pothos...I never thought about it but that's the perfect plant to benchmark against! It too is one of the hardiest plants in my collection that I'd need to actively try to kill for it to actually not flourish. (Does that make sense? Coffee has worn off)

completely makes sense, such an easy benchmark option for exactly that reason 😊💚🌿

It's so refreshing to see a 'warts and all' video - thank you! I've only had mine a few months and it was a rooted cutting rather than an established plant, but it's been problem free (hopefully not jinxed it now!). I have it in chunky aroid mix and medium light (set back from a west facing window), and my flat is high humidity (75-80%). It did spend a month in my shower with no natural light after a plant next to it had thrips (I know my quarantine is harsh, but I have no other space), and other than slower growth it didn't seem to care.

I’ve had mine for almost 2 years and I’ve found it pretty easy going. I live in Georgia so the natural humidity is around 50%. I have it under a basic LED light from ikea and it grows like gang busters. I do have to make sure I check on it everyday because the stems twist and bend toward the light. The new leaves are BEAUTIFUL and shiny. Very rewarding. Repotted it an mix of 75% orchid bark and 25% peat moss. I did have a problem with bacterial infection for a couple leaves but it’s rebounded. Mine likes bottom watering. Got a 6in for $99 at the time. Snatched it up because there are two growth points.

I don’t have a pasta but from friends and research I think crawlers in general do not thrive in pon. I may be completely wrong! But from my experience they really really love a good aroid mix. Heavier than you would use for anthuriums.

I found my pasta easier to care for than gloriosum maybe because the glossy leaves do not require high humidity. My pasta lost old leaves one by one so I suppose it's just normal life span...? An interesting thing to share is that I bought mine from someone who didn't know pasta is a crawler and tried to force this pasta to climb. So, it was very crooked when I got it. I repotted it and the crooked form turned back to the natural form within two weeks!

I had mine for less than a week. It came in the mail already floppy. The Dean McDowell on the other hand is almost too good. It has grown a new leaf every month. None have died and they continue to get bigger and bigger. I need to prop it at this point but it is growing faster than my air layering is growing roots.

I am interested to see how your plant turns out. I think changing to soil will be a game changer. Or maybe add a little bark to the pon to make it chunkier? I don’t have a pasta but I learn so much from rehabbing plant stories. Definitely agree with stressed plants attract pests (but also beneficials in my experience (green lace wings and lady bugs). Thank you for sharing!

    • @Houseplantygoodness
      @Houseplantygoodness  2 года назад

Yeah definately also attracts beneficial, if I am not mistaken that is one of the reason pheromones are released.
It's been moved into my chunky soil mix, let's see what happens, if it drastically improves, then might do a follow up

I added one to my collection a few months ago. I am in Perth, Australia and have it in an East facing window. The newest leaf tore when unfurling. It's fertlised weakly with liquid fert every other watering and in a chunky mix. The oldest leaf has brown spots too, but not had any problems with pests yet (touch wood!). It seems to be too young to want a long pot, but maybe I need to get it into one sooner. Thank you for such an informative, honest video!

If you mist new growth spikes 1-2x per day, that will prevent tearing as it unfurls

PS my pastazanum looks healthier and better growing, but all the leaves have some of those orange markings. You grow it in a conservatory, so it is perplexing yours is doing so poorly. I am in NYC and there was a heat wave, so I may blame that for some blemishes on the leaves.
But when I received the plowmanii I was "wow", when I received the pastazanum, I was "meh", reminded me of Colocasias and Alocasias many grow in their yards or on their doorsteps here in the summer.

I got my pasta from Georgina and it’s happy and loving life! It’s tucked away under some other big plants and just keeps growing! *touch wood* nothing had gone wrong with this plant! She gave it to me as 2 leaves with roots starting in October last year and now it’s got 7 leaves in total. It mostly grew those leaves from spring onwards.

I know it's been a year since you did this vid but you wanted a repository of experiences. I bought the McDowell about a year ago, 3 small leaves, thin stem...now it's a huge monster that I've had to move into my shadehouse and buy a long trough/veggie planter for. It outgrows the houseplant size very quickly. 10 months ago I bought 2 seedlings of the Gloriosum and I think I'll have the same issue. For all the crawlers they seem to thrive in Aroid mix, dappled/filtered light, coolish temps don't seem to be a problem (10°c) and humidity 20%-90%...they do well.

Hi Memo., i have this plant and yes its been a spider mite magnet. Also in pon, this one seems to like lower light from my experience .I had a bare stem so i just cut through the stem separating the cuts with a plastic plant label which resulted in two fresh growing points, which has made new leaves without disturbing the roots so you get a full plant again, or you can separate if you want, easy and less stressful for the plant.🙂Dean mcdowel are also spider mite prone😞the easiest i have is the philodendron Nangaritense which can get lovely big leaves and likes slightly lower light conditions

Well, I hope the one I bought two weeks ago will feel better than yours.
2 weeks in, I've showered it upon arrival, I repotted it as it was quite at the end of its pot, and for now, it seems happy. No signs of pests, the leaf that was opening is now completely open and the next one is coming.
I've kept it in soil mix, though. I don't have any philodendron in PON.
I'll keep my finger crossed that mine isn't as problematic. :D

personally i am happy with its look, and it’s been pretty resilient, but what i was literally and figuratively sold about this pastaz is ridiculous. i’m glad my leaves have stayed the same shape but i feel like it’s going to take two years before it seems established. i was sold a medium size plant too, $100x, not including shipping. i had it in very bright direct light and it didn’t do any better than bright indirect, i actually think bright indirect is better than very bright direct with constantly moist soil. i think it’s literally just a plant that needs to be established before it takes off. not as a plant but in your environment. absolutely bizarre but it will be interesting to see when it finally matures. fyi i’ve had this plant for over a year, so that means i need this plant to be about three years old before i will be proud of it size wise

Yeah, I haven't got a pastazanum simply because I feel it takes a while for it to look big and sexy. I'll probably get one if I find an already mature specimen, but I already have some gloriosum, a Dean McDowell and whatnot and they look good from the start 🤷‍♂️

Omg, I also get frustrated with this one. I bought mine from another collector for $15. It has 3 leaves and an unfurled new leaf, so I thought it looks healthy (?). I couldn't be more wrong. It acclimates so poorly, the leaves melted after being repot. It expoded in extrafloral nectaries and attracted spidermites. The unfurled leaf got attacked by the mites and became deformed. I had to rub every single leaf and down the stem with insecticidal soaps every week. Then I had to repot again in fear of root rot. I put it in a humidity box and cranked up the humidity to high, it put out another somewhat decent leaf. As soon as I thought the struggle is over, I found spider webs on top of the bark-soil. FML. Now the biggest leaf starts yellowing. 🤨🤨

I agree with you about how poorly performing plants get neglected and eventually rid of on the marketplace. I paid for this pastazanum silver, ernestii and hoya dolichosparte for $30, and I can't recommend any of them. Pest magnet, stem rot and root rot galore. The ernestii is now on rehab as wet sticks, and the hoya transferred to semi hydroponic 😂😂😂

Hi Memo, hope you doing well. I have a pasta and dean mcdowell, I have them in soil ninja monstera mix and mixed some leca in between and they doing really well, I have my mcdean dowell in my north facing window (which I will be moving) It has been doing there funny enough because it see blue skys which is probs what it would see out in the nature too when crawling on the floor. My pasta is my south facing bathroom but approx 2meters away from the window and it’s been slower than the mc dowell… so I probs should leave the mcdowell where it is if it’s doing well ( I’m worried long term 😂) … I’ve tried lechuza and leca and I’m honestly always going to go back to soil but mix leca in my soul where my roots have attached to the leca.. maybe when you cut your pasta try some in soil mix with leca.. could work?!

I have a north facing with windows on the east and west and I’m contemplating putting some of my babies in there ( my English bull terrier has proved to me I can trust her around my plants 😂😂😂) I’m not a fan of the glass cabinet idea as I think plants should be free in your home environment as in the wild they tougher than we think, I have some rare babies and they just around my house living in my home conditions and they in such beautiful condition, the more we fiddle and create a sense of what we thinks they want that’s when we cause the plants harm and gets all these issue ( cotton wooling them 🤣) can’t wait for my esmareldense do get a big and gorgeous as yours! Hello Memo! I am a big fan, and I also have a “problem pastazanum”. I do have a good number of leaves on mine, but when I discovered that I had had my first pest outbreak, this plant was one of my most affected:( I had spider mites recently, and so all but my newest “pest infestation leaves” are showing signs of having been chomped on and the nutrient loss caused by that is clear. My worst leaves look significantly worse than your big leaf. This was my first pest issue ever, and I somehow missed it until it was pretty bad. I have managed to clear that issue up (fingers crossed), but the devastation those little buggers inflicted upon my plants is evident. I am not sure what to do at this point with the leaves that no longer bring me joy. I am considering chopping and propping the healthy ends of my crawlers, but am curious: will the rhizome/stem where the leaves have been removed still be viable to node propagate? I am pretty sure that if I chop the newest leaves and repot them, that the extra rhizome (which is fully rooted), should be able to be salvaged if I chop it into individual or possibly double nodes, and then try again to grow them on their own. I’d love to hear your opinion!! Do you think that there is a chance to use that long chonk to get some new life out of the back end of this plant? As far as growth prior to the spider mite infestation, I was getting a new leaf every 7-10 days maybe? And the plant had about 6 or 7 gorgeous leaves. I am a “helicopter plant parent” so in hindsight I am kicking myself for not knowing that the loss of shine and dusty appearance of my leaves was CLEARLY a pest issue. I had never had a single pest prior to the great spider mite infestation of 2022, so sadly I just didn’t realize. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 and now that I’ve come through the other side of that, I am never going to let that happen again! Literally all of the plants in my plant room had been affected on some level by the time I realized what was happening. Luckily in this case, I only have about 50ish plants in that room. I can’t even imagine the amount of work and stress an outbreak of pests in a conservatory the size of yours would cause!! The rest of the plants throughout my home are all good! I am now so careful about treating all of my plants preventatively, and also quarantining every plant that I bring into my collection. This is something I neglected to do but I am also appreciative on some level for having to go through this mess. Having an outbreak like this has taught me how to deal with spider mites, and also shown me that I can do the work and come back from this type of situation. I feel so much more prepared now and it has taught me how to be ok when my plants aren’t all “instagram worthy”. This is real life lol! I enjoy your videos so much, and seeing how incredible your plants are, and how mature and lovely mine have the potential of becoming, is an inspiration. Seeing that you also deal with some of the same pressures as I do, makes your videos so much more relatable and also makes me feel like I will be able to also grow my plants to be huge and lush like yours some day!! Thank you for the inspiration and also for all of the tips, tricks, and information you share in all of your videos!!! I appreciate you! Xx Nora

Also so happy to see you have come out of your experience with a positive outlook, owning plants always teaches us so much about them but also how resilient we can be.
