Lumafusion’s had the iPad to itself for quite a few years. But they constantly failed to deliver on what they promised as coming soon deliverables/features. Their excuse was always a lack of resources. Well, that’s 100% on their management for failing to resolve this. Now an 800lb pound gorilla has landed on the iPad. A company with experience, resources and a history of even over-delivering on it’s promises. DaVinci Resolve for iPad, is not just an app, it’s part of a tightly integrated set of solutions, that I expect will see continuous improvements and advancements over the next year.

Hi @Charles Wilson I have never once heard the team at LumaTouch talk about a lack of resources. 🧐 When the first M1 iPad Pro was launched they were pressured by Apple to show off a series of new features that were nowhere ready to be launched and were barely out of alpha testing…
This created an expectation of immediate release which was far from the reality of things.
LumaTouch release new features and updates as and when they are fully ready. That’s why you very rarely get bugs and glitches on new features.
I can understand your frustration but they are a pretty transparent and honest company with a really good management team IMHO.
DaVinci Resolve coming to iPad will only make them work harder to improve the app which is now available on Android as well as iOS and MacOS. 🤙

@@IAMSTULITTLE An example would be the 18 months of promises for delivering speed ramping capabilities (not work arounds). The response directly from their forum support staff on the last major upgrade release when once again they failed to deliver what they promised was prioritization and allocation of limited resources. They are a good company with great staff, but I do feel their leadership is responsible for how slowly the product has advanced in the past couple of years.

Man, I must admit, as of 2022, almost 2023, I believe Adobe should be more than capable of releasing a mobile video editor that can compete with LumaFusion and DaVinci Resolve. I imagine DaVinci will eventually be compatible with more mobile devices in time as it grows. As of now, I'd say LumaFusion still might not have much competition for for just a little while longer. I would not be surprised if Adobe releases a Premiere Mobile or something in 2023 2024 but I think their focus right now is the mobile Photoshop.

As the LumaFusion guy on RUclips. @michael tobin missed quite a lot of key features that would have shown more of what LF can do professionally.
But, I think it’s great Blackmagic have ported DaVinci Resolve over to the iPad as it will push the guys @luma-touch to work harder on their app to keep being competitive. 🤙 Competition is good for the end user.

    • @IAMSTULITTLE
      @IAMSTULITTLE Год назад +12

@@initialfocus Sure, just about every panel can have keyframes applied to them giving you a huge amount of fine control.
In the colour and effects panel you didn’t have the waveforms, histograms, and scopes on for the colour grading. There’s Blend Modes between layers.
The ability to do pro level voice over recordings. You did touch upon there being Storyblocks stock video in the panels. But, that’s a really cost effective subscription that allows you full access to the SB video, audio and fx libraries.
You can work directly from a solid state drive rather than importing/copying clips into LumaFusion and it copes really well with multiple 4K feeds.
Soon there will be speed ramping and multi-cam which I have played with is just awesome and other features you would expect from pro level NLE. They are also adding curves editors for their advanced key framing.
Where I think LumaFusion beats Da Vinci Resolve is the tactile touch nature of it being a tablet and phone app first and a computer app second. Where as DaVinci Resolve really needs a keyboard and mouse/trackpad to make the most of it and is very hard to use without them.
I do agree DaVinci Resolves Colour Grading Tools are hands down the best out there and that colour grading on LF has always been their Achilles Heel. Hope this helps 🤙🤗
Edit: You can hook up LumaFusion to an HDMI cable and work on an external monitor showing the main preview window and the controls on the iPad. That then allows you to plug-in studio quality surround sound if desired.

I use Premiere Pro, I think I could stop using it, if I can keep everything on external drives, files are way too big for the iPad, especially on the GH6 I use for recording videos. The nice thing about iPads, you can do everything video editing wise on one device, as long as there's software like Lumafusion and DaVinci Resolve on there. I'll keep using the GH6 until Apple hopefully puts a Micro 4/3 at the minimum sensor on these iPads, I think there's a lot of space in there to have it in and also keep it cool. Lets see some real innovation from these guys from Cupertino.

LumaFusion has a ton of features for a low price, and it is a fast, responsive and stable app. Of course, DaVinci Resolve without Studio is free, and it comes with even more features (including a way to unlock the other pages from the desktop app, even though these don’t work 100% yet). DR is also fast and responsive, and mostly stable.
For my limited use cases, there are a few key differences and critiques:
    User interface:
    * Touch control is great for moving clips around, positioning the playhead or zooming the timeline. LF embraces this more, DR could offer more here, especially for zoom. In some respects is still clear that DR is a port from the desktop.
    * Touch is also problematic, because controls (buttons, dials, etc.) need more space to make it easy to touch the right control. So, less controls fit on a screen. LF solves this by switching to separate pages for editing video or audio clips or titles. But that also takes every edit out of the context of the timeline, and that slows down editing and is a worse workflow, in my experience. And certain things still remain very fiddly, like editing keyframes.
. DR solves this by opening and closing windows like the Inspector or the Effects library, while staying on the same page. And many functions can be controlled with the keyboard as well. I like this approach better, because I always see the context of what I am doing, and every little change or preview can be done very quickly. It is a good combination of intuitive touch interface with fast keyboard interface (plus the possibility to use a wireless speed editor that you have … for 400$). Still, DR may want to add a few more touch controls, as mentioned above. And Idk yet how keyframe editing is solved in DR on iPad. Is it useable?
    Basic features:
    * Missing or badly done basic features: LF doesn’t have nice basic title effects that can just be dropped into the timeline and that work with just a little adjustment. Everyone needs them, but it takes a long time to get something set up that is pleasing. User title effects can be stored in presets, but I find the preset browser unintuitive. This, and the missing speed ramping, are sore spots. With DR, titles are a breeze. Title browser: very intuitive … previews: the same, and a good selection of pleasing effects is available. It’s so easy to drop a title on the timeline, make a few small changes in the Inspector, done. Top! I haven’t checked DR for speed ramping yet though.
    * External storage: Both LF and DR explicitly support external storage.
    Advanced features:
    * Audio: LF has some of the most important audio processing functions built in. And it allows loading of audio units - there are plenty professional ones on iPad, for very reasonable prices. DR does not seem to allow loading of audio plugins on iPad. But the built-in processing effects are more complete (including De-Esser and Noise Reduction) … alas, the mixer interface on the (hidden) Fairlight page doesn’t open or work yet, and I found no other way (yet?) to change settings in the sound effects.
    * Color: You showed this: LF supports basic color controls, analysis tools and LUTs - but DR is the clear winner, more controls, in an easily accessible and intuitive interface.
    * Masking and keying: this has improved in LF … but my main use case is blurring of private information from videos and tracking these spots, and that still seems to be a manual endeavor. DR seems to have exceptional automatic masking and tracking facilities, and I am looking forward to use them.
    * Stabilization: useable in both LF and DR.
    * Lens Correction: not available in both … although DR Studio includes it.
    * High frame rate sources: Neither LF nor DR handle 240 fps footage from my camera well - and I have not tried 960 fps yet! DR at least allows me to tell it the frame rate of each source, but that only goes up to 120 fps. And the audio track is not affected. LF blindly believes the frame rate reported in the source, even when it is false. In both programs, handling normal speed replay of slow mo sources is tricky, to say the least. And in LF on my M1 iPad, replaying a sped-up version of a clip in the editor is not smooth, while DR handles this nicely.
    * Multicam editing: from what I see in how-to videos, useable in both LF and DR.
    * User Tricks and Effects: DR has Fusion. Idk yet how useable this hidden feature is on iPad. But it looks promising. LF has user-defined shapes in titles. Requires manual work, tricky.
This is all that I can think of for now.
    Summary:
So far, DR has made me very happy. I hope that Black Magic fixes the hidden pages on iPad, makes them officially available, and improves the user interface a bit more. The workflow in DR is much more snappy and smoother. And every page is both well focussed and shows required details and interfaces as required.
LF is a good old friend. But it needs to get better with some of the basic features, like titles. And to beat DR, it needs to do a few things better than DR, and a few things that DR doesn’t do. I really hope that Lumatouch gets there.

Yes that is one of the common issues i used to run into. I have since not had that problem by making some adjustments.
First thing to do is run an optimize sweep of the project. This usually solves the problem. The other thing i did was keep the projects off LF and onto a external hard drive. Work of the hard drive and keep Luma with as little files and imports as possible. Having a light load of data allows the performance to be virtually flawless and glitch free. Thats been my experience anyway.

So many ways to mask in Resolve. Using the regular pen style masking tools called power windows that are all trackable ( Resolves tracking speed and accuracy is like some type of witchcraft ) then you have the AI based “magic mask” tool which does an amazing job of masking and rotoscoping. There is also AI based depth map masking which works really well. Finally using Resolves color qualifiers for masking are excellent. These all work within their own discreet nodes which make editing with them incredibly powerful.

Glad to see DR on the iPad. Something for the Pro videographers to supplement their Mac Studios with. Always good to have useful options in the Pro sphere.
However, I think, in the end, most iPad users will continue with Luma. It’s simply easier for the masses to use and doesn’t require a bunch of peripherals (Storage drives, etc), learning curves, or internal space. We’re talking millions of iPad users who simply want to upload annoying Reels and a RUclips video for friends and family … such as my relatives. 😁 They’ll remain with simplicity, imho.

@@initialfocus 1. Thanks for replying so fast! I really appreciate it! I’m still a new viewer, but i have to say i think you and potatojet have made me want to pay for davinci, and so far, so worth it! Love the content!
      2. To give some context i switched over to iPad only for workflow (to try to be more mobile, and pack a little lighter) but i noticed sometimes when i would try to export after editing it would say “failed to export” or “low storage”.
I found it super strange because i run pretty lean as far as data goes (i delete everything and keep everything on SSD’s)
So i check my storage and it says that “system data” was eating up anywhere from 90, 100, or even 160GB worth of data. I read somewhere that it was using digital memory or ram and converting it into physical memory? or its saving cached data and never getting rid of it. I tried cleaning up everything, restarting it, deleting/offloading apps but nothing works. I’ve probably had to reset my iPad once a month ever since i switch (its the only thing that fixes the issue).
I’ve read on a couple of support pages that other people have had this issue with their iPhones/ipads/idevices, but i see it a ton with my iPad. Im not ruling out that this could be user error on my end, but I’m completely lost when it comes to this and wondering is it something I’m doing or is it a hardware thing?
