Ah, we had a goldfish won at a county fair that lived with us for 14 years. It too developed this condition and after a year or so, moved on to fish heaven.
Fish are friends, not food! Hope she recovers and lives another 8 years, at least. Also, check the tank, it is possible that a piece of alcantara got inside, accidentally.
About 20 years ago, we had some $.25 goldfish we got and put in our pond out back... They grew to be at least a foot long or bigger (probably twice the size of Reece Witherspoon, the fish). Sadly, Racoons came out of the storm drains, found the pond, and ate them :(
