  • These were the people everyone wanted to be. Posters on every bedroom wall across the country. The decade was a great time to grow up. For most people. But for child stars - not so much. Long hours of work and the unbearable scrutiny of being in the limelight 24/7 robbed these kids of a normal childhood. And while some were able to cope with their fame, many others were not and led far from happy lives.

In 2000 I went to Las Vegas to see David Cassidy for my 42nd birthday on April 6. During the song "I Think I Love You", he got off the stage and walked around the table's where the audience sat. I was on the isle where he would go bank on stage. He stopped at the table where I was and a lady at my table told David it was my birthday. I had brought the album cover with and Da I'd signed it and gave a kiss on the top of my head. I felt like I was 14 again and cried for a week.

Yes. David admitted his dad was an alcoholic and (at least verbally) abusive. He hated that David had become more famous than him. When i went to buy my ticket I told the lady who sold it to me about my scrapbook. She told me to bring the scrapbook to the concert. She said she had a feeling something good was going to happen if I did. Which it did David could not see what i was holding up I was in the second row the lights were causing him to not see it. So he invited me on stage so he could seel what it was. One of the biggest highlights of my life I will never forget it!!! We were the last generation to really enjoy our childhood. Everyone got super scared when those boys started disappearing left and right in GA. Our parents started keeping us in and I think it ruined the innocence of being young and free to play with out being scared. To not be able to run around without fear ws incredible. Today's kids will never get to feel the wind blowing on their faces while riding bikes and visiting friends. Playing outside in the sun raised us strong. We had hopes and dreams for the future. Kids now days stay inside gain weight suffer from diabetes as well as other problems from to much weight. It's sad really. I let my kids play outside in the 90's and I got a lot of back lash for it. My kids were well versed in how to stay far and away from strangers. It worked because my daughter came running into the house screaming about a man asking her what color her iunderwaer was!!! I had to stop it right then and start taking them to the play ground on my days off. It destroyed their fun.

Just a note. I didn't get involved with stardom but as a musician, going pro at 15, I was around many stars and the one that I was good friends with, Tommy Bolin, woke me up. I did some drugs and losing my friend, Tommy, I am glad I decided to just enjoy the good money and small limelight opting for the background job. Today, at 75, I went through the trials but get to enjoy playing music and enjoying it. The pressure of the stars is unbelievable and I don't think any story can portray the inner suffering.

Id taken food to his room the evening before his show. When i was getting plates for a party i was prepping for that evening he was doing a sound check. When he paused and heard me rattle plates in the storeroom he asked his assistant to see who was back there. When she told him it was the guy who cooked your food he had her bring me in and sang Every Rose Has a Thorn. Brett Michaels was also there and he had a dig about him when he finished lol. Most down to earth talent I met while working there. He won the underwear contest by a large margin over Brett Michaels having almost twice as many pairs thrown on the stage by fans according to the cleanup crew. 😂 Brett Micheals was rude, even to his band members, almost as bad as Miranda Lambert. She was the worst I encountered while working there but he was a close second. Ill always remember David Cassidy for not only watchng him on TV as a child but also for how well he treated me at the casino. It was really shocking when we heard he had passed a couple months later.

What won't be said out loud is that The Studios wrung these kids dry like a sponge, grossly underpaid them, gave them the crappiest contracts, and cheated them out of the royalties they were due.
It's a theme here. So where are the agents protecting these kids? Bet they made more than the kid made per show. Child labor laws anyone? Everyone in Hollywood knows how these kids are used, abused and tossed to the side. No wonder their lives take a turn for worse in adulthood. How many of us could handle the work, the fame, and yet nothing to show for it later on?

      @Andy-xx3tt 7 месяцев назад +3

A lot of times, it’s the parents that are either too trusting of their management or they simply don’t care as long as their kid is getting paid. There’s several child actresses I can think of that grew up healthy and still have strong careers today. Chloë Grace Moretz has had her brother as her acting coach since she started acting very young, he’s basically been her guardian on sets and she’s spoken of incidents where he stood up for her when she was put in uncomfortable positions when she started to get older and studios wanted her to look more “adult”. Dakota and Elle Fanning, Emma Watson, and even Hilary Duff had parents who were all supportive of their careers but weren’t stage parents who forced them into anything. People like Lindsey Lohan, Macauley Culkin, Brooke Shields, Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore, and many others were destroyed by their own parents who pushed and pushed them into the spotlight and didn’t advocate for their kids at all as long as they brought home a paycheck. Some of these people have managed to turn their lives around and are doing a lot better now but their relationships with their parents are broken because _they_ were ultimately responsible for their children’s welfare and failed them.

I can't remember which girl it was, Demi Lavato maybe, that had gotten into drugs and such. When her mom was asked why she didn't discipline her or tell her no,her mom said something to the affect, "How was I suppose to have stopped her, she was bringing in the income?" That tells a lot there. Instead of worrying about het daughter and taking the chance to upset her or for her to possibly quit working, she just cared about the money.

I am old enough to have watched the series originally aired, but was young enough to love to hate Nellie and Ms. Olson, at least to start. I was savvy enough to soon understand they were just playing roles, and shortly thereafter to realize that no one else could have played those parts. They were genius at it.
Landon, for whatever drive and some personal flaws likely related to that drive, did produce quality family television, and he has to be appreciated for it. As such a huge screen presence, I don't think anyone else could have played his own role as well, either.
The whole cast was great, though. Probably couldn't have traded any of them, really, now that I think about it. Back in those days, typecasting was such a thing and it hit some actresses and actors pretty hard, so they really deserve residuals from iconic shows that they helped make iconic.

Jack, their father, was horribly jealous of both of them- especially David. Jack was very well-known as an actor and singer in his own right- but he didn’t quite achieve the same level of fame David did and the 2 grew apart as a result. Worse, Jack had Bi-Polar Disorder (called Manic Depression in the 1970s) and this caused a number of serious problems. He and Shirley got divorced and he was killed in a fire in his apartment in 1976. He was 49 years old.

I will always adore David Cassidy. I never watched these other shows, but I loved the Partridge Family, almost entirely because of David. Now, their music wasn't my cup of tea: I had older cousins with super cool tastes in music, so I was listening to Steppenwolf, Grand Funk RR, Credence, Led Zep, Alice Cooper, etc., even though I was only in fifth and sixth grade. Still, I loved some of David's solo work, I Think I Love You especially. He had a really beautiful voice. I still pull up those songs on RUclips now and then and listen to him. His life was sad, and the saddest thing is, as he said himself, the waste. Tragic. I feel very sad for his beautiful biological daughter. I hope she had lots of love to make up for the lack of her biological father's love in her life. David was lucky in his stepmother, I remember him saying in some article that Shirley, unlike his dad, acted like more of a real parent to him. Anyway, rest in power, David Cassidy. You had a sweetness about you, to go with that remarkably cute face.

I know it was the 80s and not the 70s, but easily the most tragic child star was Judith Barsi. An insanely talented little girl who had her career and her precious little life snuffed out by the one man who should have dedicated his life to protecting her, her daddy. Barsi, who was best known as the voice of Ducky in "The Land before Time" and Anne-Marie in "All Dogs go to Heaven", was shot by her abusive, alcoholic father in her sleep, at the tender age of ten along with her mother, before the coward took his own life.

I wanted to look like her, had to have my hair like hers, it was crazy! My parents couldn't take it anymore! I even had the Farrah head. When she died, I went crazy crying! I mean my parents couldn't control me, it was bad! But to this day I have everything! I had bought 5copies of the poster of her in the bathing suit, and I sold 1for 5,000 and 1 for 2,000. I truly miss her and was a very big fan of hers! Rip Farrah, love your #1 fan Marilyn

I preferred Jackie Smith, but Farrah was cool. She only lasted one season. People forget.

I'd like to see something about Manuel Padilla, who played "Boy" on Tarzan and almost had his own spinoff from Gunsmoke. He was also in Scarface...

@10:20 the Christmas ornament that Erin Moran is holding was painted by a friend of mine. We were all saddened by Erin's passing.

If we reincarnate into new lifetimes after we die, then I absolutely do not want to begin my next lifetime as a child star!

Eve Plumb played the mother in "Fudge" (1995-7), a show based on Judy Bloom's books.

David Cassidy was one of my faves, Eve Plumb sto9d out because even though she was amiddle child she seemedmore like an only child...left out, feeling alone.

Eve plumb was my fav Brady, she was portrayed as the middle child and a loner I too was a lonely child, only child syndrome is not fun and I wish at 56 yrs old that I had had siblings. Always wanted siblings. But my mom n dad were not blessed with children and I was adopted by them and they never wanted any more. I guess maybe they didn't think they could handle any more than me. Idk. But I'd have loved having other children besides me. I identified with Jan Brady.

This is all over the place - very difficult to know just who is being spoken about, as well as a lot of un-necessary verbal about unconnected people and events.

I don’t think he had much to do with raising her. She had his name and I assume he paid her mom child support. Her relationship with her dad seemed to start when she was 16 and was trying to be a pop star, but she sucked and couldn’t sing. She tried acting next and has done well for herself. David didn’t leave her any money when he died, he left it all to his son he had from a marriage. I guess he figured she used his name to get her foot in the door and made good money. He was never married to Katie’s mom. I think she was the result of a one night stand or a brief affair. Their relationship was always strained according to Katie.
