- The Antoine mine is located at 2195 metres elevation at the head of the south fork of McGuigan Creek. New Denver, British Columbia is 10 kilometres to the southwest.
The Antoine claim was first staked in 1891 and subsequently Crown granted in 1897. The Red Fox (Lot 2413), Red Fox Fr. (Lot 2414) and Central (Lot 2415) Crown grants adjoin the Antoine claim to the east. The Red Fox, Red Fox Fr. and Central claims were partially developed by extending the Red Fox workings of the Antoine into the Red Fox claim (082KSW065). The Ogema Reverted Crown grant (Lot 3163) adjoins the Antoine claim to the south. Jackson Mines Limited Incorporated was incorporated in 1897 and operated the Antoine property from 1899 until 1903. At this time an extensive exploration program was undertaken and included the extension of the No. 5 crosscut adit to connect with the lower workings. Work in 1925 consisted of reworking the old dump from the No. 5 portal. The following year ore was found above the 50 foot level. Other workings at this time consisted of the upper or Red Fox drift and incline shaft connecting to the No. 5 level and a short winze below the No. 5 level.
The Antoine workings and adjacent ground lay dormant from 1927 until 1962 when L.N. Garland and Associates purchased the Antoine Group consisting of the 5 Crown and Reverted Crown grants previously mentioned and 3 recorded claims. They also attained an option on the adjacent Soho property (082KSW019). Development work was carried out in 1962 and 1963. Mr. Garland and Associates incorporated as the Antoine Silver Mines Limited in 1964. An ore shoot, 38 metres long, on the Ogema vein was opened up in 1964. The Ogema vein lies 76 metres southwest of the Antoine vein. Ore from the Ogema vein and old dumps was shipped to the Carnegie mill in 1965. In this year, mining operations were moved to the nearby Old Tom Moore adit (082KSW019) to intersect the Ogema and Antoine veins at 150 metres below the No. 5 level. This work was carried out from 1966 to 1967 and included some 90 metres of diamond drilling. During 1968 an additional 150 metres underground work and 460 metres diamond drilling was carried out with ore shipped to a mill in Silverton. Operations were discontinued in this year with 550 tonnes of ore remaining in stockpile at the bottom of the mine road. The mine was operated by W. Turley in 1979 and Arley Mines Ltd. in 1980 (Jack Hale, pers. comm., 2001).
The Antoine lode is hosted by massive argillites and quartzites with minor limestones of the Triassic Slocan Group. The general strike of these lithologies is southeast and dips are 35 to 60 degrees southwest. These sediments are intruded by irregular quartz to feldspar porphyry bodies and lamprophyre dikes. Lamprophyre dikes are cut by the vein and both are displaced by faults. Immediately to the east, rocks of Slocan Group are slates and fissile argillites with occasional narrow beds of limestone.
The Antoine lode strikes northeast and dips 65 degrees southeast but curves eastward as it approaches the Red Fox claim. The lode consists of quartz, locally crusty, and siderite with two orebodies of galena, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite and native silver in leaf and wire form. The lodes contain fragments of pyritized hostrocks. At the northeast end of the lode it rolls flatly into the bedding. To the southwest the lode continues, in part, in a steeply dipping fracture but also flattens into bedding. Continuation of the vein to the southwest is uncertain. The lamprophyre dike has been offset 12 metres by faulting; the lode is not offset.
Two important ore shoots have been mined on the Antoine lode. The eastern shoot lies on either side of the Antoine and Red Fox claims. It was about 60 metres long and does not go much below the intermediate level. The western shoot continued from near surface to below the No. 5 level. Its pitch was south, was 75 to 90 metres long and carried an ore streak ranging from 2 to 90 centimetres thick. Most of the ore mined has come from the footwall of a 60 to 150 centimetres wide lamprophyre dike that follows the vein for 50 metres.
It is important that mineralization occurs where the lode vein is coincident with jointing, particularly where Slocan sediments are folded or are intruded by porphyry dikes.
Total production from the former Antoine mine amounted to 9601 tonnes mined producing 10,613,059 grams silver, 124 grams gold, 1486 kilograms cadmium, 1012 kilograms copper, 735,548 kilograms lead and 232,454 kilograms zinc over its two productive periods, which were from 1895 to 1917 and 1963 to 1975.
Your videos make me miss home so much... I am BC born and raised and now living in Germany. There is No freedom here. Never take the outdoors for granted
Are you still in Germany? I'm American and have lived in Germany for over 30 years now and yes Germans go about things differently. A lot of woods and stuff are privately owned, I mean the country isn't that big....
Another awesome video. Frank, thanks for taking us along to that amazing place, world class mountain scenery.
I guess many of the mines were small due to the lack of year round access. They probably jyst gave up. Love the deja vu moment. Your reaction was great fun.
That's one heckuva a drone you have.
as soon as I saw the spoked wheel and the winch drum i knew you were there before
They call that Deja Vu, so, do you believe that there is more to life than you can experience, I've had them. Love your telescopic camera, those close shots.
Love your work and really appreciate that you know mines and terminology, watching 'cave' explorers is just plain frustrating as they have no idea what to pay attention to.
You truly entered a portal here...to another dimension.
TY Frank and cool looking ore indeed that is :)
Jeepers; Careful Frank. And thanks. I miss hiking up those mountains. It's just plain gorgeous country.
Have explored many of the old mine's above Silverton, Colorado. Many are now being closed off with grates or blasted shut by the owners.
It is sad. That is the main reason I want to get into mines and document them before they are all gone!
Now thats a souvenir Frank. Its amazing how fast the seasons change up there in the high country. Thanks for bring us all on your exploration.
We all had those Opps moments it's perfectly human that's a lot of mind you explore can't get them all right all the time but what an awesome show I enjoy watching your videos
Very busy place back then alot of work very amazing place
That’s was pretty funny. It was great fun watching you try to process this.
Wow the drone flight along the ridge was amazing to see - really crisp footage; and of course the informative commentary was excellent too. The déjà-vu and your self questioning was amusing and at first I thought maybe it was just similar to another mine but then realization with the knocked over carbide and the bucket tag, only difference is the now dug out entrance - strange. “Rats with no respect but you can train them with a boot real quick”, oh my so funny; I notice he ran off real fast after that. It was cool that you got that nice chunk of Galena and to see the vein you pulled if from. Fantastic episode Frank, thank you.
You are welcome, yes the drone does an awesome job I too am impressed with the quality film it produces.
glitch in the matrix
Hi FrankGreat video again. The tummy knockers are playing games with you. They dug out the opening after you had to climb the hell ladders again to get out.
Yeah someone is screwing with me!
Thanks for sharing Frank.. Gotta love that feeling of I been here before.
Helluva view there with the drone Sir 😍
Eye in the sky mam.
Always 5 star videos ... Thanks and stay safe !
Until you figured it out, I thought maybe you forgot your gas monitor and were getting a little loopy. And then the full carbide can looked familiar to me also! ha ha. The galena vein was cool. Nice to get a sample like that which will always remind you of the adventure.
As usual brillant video top quality drone view shots. 10 out of 10 stay safe while you play. Frank thank you for the many hrs hard work efford you put into making such fine video's you have it down to a fine art the quality as good as anything on main stream media. Take care look forward to nxt adventure 👍☘🇮🇪
Thank you for you kind words glad you enjoy the channel Paul!
Frank done got mine madness.
Awesome you hit my favorite old stomping grounds, know that area quite well.....yes some of the ridge tracks/trails are mine. My grandfather worked up there way back before my time.
Frank, thanks for checking out the mineralization. Watching other guys ignore those veins drives me absolutely batty. You must have some fantastic samples. Sure hope you don’t pull down a bigger sample than you are hoping for though. 😧
You bet
Its very beautiful i just love mountains
Great vids, lots of history info, always have been interested in that area, no holes around 100mile that I know of, appreciate ya sharing.
Great videos ! I watch them every time I goto bed . I also love exploring mines. So hello from Arizona haha
I remember when you knocked that thing on its side Frank. Youre not crazy! Well I guess we are all alittle bit nuts. Thank you for the video.
That was a great introduction.
Good find Frank! Fine job, Regards Ody
enjoy your videos very much, thank you for taking the risk so that we might share in your adventures..........ray lowery
Check your gps tracks from past. Well guess it is that crazy one. Lol. Man these vids kick ass.
22:15 in Ladders from Hell! video, for your reference.
All right time to let him in on the joke, we spent years watching you and when we knew you were going to this mine we placed all those things you remembered just to screw with your mind
SOB!
@@exploringabandonedmines LOL
Another kick ass vid A. Good as gold!
Just getting ready for the day and thought I would watch a couple of your videos. I think that you are one of the best channels on here. But I am having a moment of Deja-vu because I watched a video of yours yesterday can't remember which one exactly where you kicked over that can of carbide and here at 7:25 I am seeing the same thing WTH because it landed the same way as this one and it is obvious that you didn't walk in the same mine . (it must be paranormal lol) Stay safe Frank and Cheers
I wrote the above before I watched the whole video lol Welcome To ANOTHER EPISODE OF FRANK'S TWILIGHT ZONE LOL
Totally awesome, totally awesome intro!
👍👍👍👍nice Video my friend👍👍👍👍
The first time you visited the "foreman's bench" it had a couple of rocks on it; this time pieces of metal, a couple tin cans, explosives and below an air hose and box. Either you put that stuff there or someone opened the adit to do some collecting.
This reminds me of As Above So Below. Maybe this IS hell underground.
"One Step Beyond" the last rung on the ladder to/from hell? "This can't be - but it is!" Watching another's cognitive dissonance play out is one thing, but being pulled into it yourself is something else entirely! Even u were initially incredulous, altho certain spots/relics seemed familiar, then I started recognizing stuff from yr earlier visit, which was somewhat disconcerting, then fascinating...glad u finally got it all figured out. U really cover some ground down there, Frank! As long as u never meet yrself approaching from a differing direction, it's all good.
You are sucking up for that Chrystal right Sharon? Don't worry!
Um...no. Thanx for reminding me tho. LoL. Btw, I've no FB account, so didn't know the vid-naming contest rules/parameters, & being out-of-state (& the loop) so long, I just let it go. It would be interesting to know what u ultimately decided on, still.
It's ok Frank, it's legal now 😜
Of all the things I’ve lost, I think I miss my mind the most !
deja vu was a surprise and you did not have to climb all the ladders thumbs up
Oh ya, I remember that bucket and the wide tag u took off it.
Another great video. Thank you! No you haven't lost it cause I remember that mine also.
wow stay safe :) To spooky for me.
Yeah I remember you tiping that thing over too
that's Crazy you met up with that other mine you previously explored haha
Been there, done that :)) they dug really deep.
You realize your show you say so much funny shit man. It keeps you "Almost safe." Lol. Phrases like, Not that steep, Not too bad really, All I gotta do if I fall is, You'll only fall a few feet maybe. LMFAO I love this shit. Go Frank!!! Serious note. Be safe. I'm hooked.
I wish you would explain what the orange writing is on the walls. It looks fresh, like someone has been in there evaluating what might be profitable to start mining again.
Usually geologists.
hi frank that mine you are in must be a twin lol still amazing place
Mind blown.
I remember you knocking that can over in the other video 2
Can you see who the assholes are that give you a thumbs down? Always seems like 4-5 HATERS have to thumbs down your AWESOME videos. I'd simply BLOCK them if possible. I dare say nobody else has the courage to explore the mines you have, do, and will ;) Keep up the great work Frank!
When you get close to 98% approval you can't get much better than that. Same as the nasty comments you have to expect a few people will wake up grumpy and take it out on you!
This is true!
Love watching your videos and listening to your comments as you go! Question: do you map out these mines at all, or just explore? --might be cool to map, but probably would take a lot of time. Thanks for the videos!
I have only mapped a part of one mine. It takes a long time!
Nice!
time warped lol that is crazy brother
I have seen the big gear wheel with the bearing crankshaft before. Maybe I was in your dream.
If i was where you were i would have done the very same, just to have a nice chunk of it. But i know myself i would not have stopped at one piece, even if it has no value i think it's pretty cool to have.
Have you plans to explore mines in the USA? Several mines that TVR has been in stopped him due to not have your climbing skills, or perhaps the two of you do a shared adventure."Shoshone mine" I think it was.
I will probably go to the states to explore some mines. I am waiting for some paperwork before I can enter the country.
@@exploringabandonedmines that will be great .I hope things work out quickly, saw you video on the mine/ museum /power generator .have sub with you now.I see you have knowledge of geology that's what's been lacking in other mine explorers vids.
I read an article in mining.com about the mines in the grand forks area are reopening. It mentioned a lot of mines you have been to.
14:59 does anyone hear that it sounds like "I see"
It was a little bit creepy that voice
That's his rubber boots as he walks
yea i wondered if there was a lady with him. then he turned around an no one was there..
It's definitely his boots rubbing together. It was that loud if it was a voice I think Frank would of noticed it. 😂
I'd want to chase all of them!!
Didn't know this was going to become Frank's real mission, to mine !
Nice exploration brother, cool find. Stuff looks promising. Would love to feature something from you on my channel one day, maybe a little collab, some ore or specimen, I'll hold that spot 4 ya, thanks for sharing your adventure
Thank you for another interesting video, nice and funny moment when you,re chopping into the rocks like a real miner.
Is it valuable ore ?
Not to me! But then I am not a miner!
BTW Calcium carbide now has shipping restrictions in the uninted states .......
Canada too. It is easy to make a bomb with.
Eh. thats probably right.................................. Question please. I am told there is a old time tool, used to split boulders, big geodes, stuff like that., all without drilling holes in rock and putting powder in and stemming ,..... I am NOT talking about drilling a hole in a boulder, and using .22 blanks., or even a " Micro Blaster "........... SUPPOSEDLY the way it worked there was a saddle, chained around the boulder with a with a hardened steel wedge, powered by a shotgun blank. You would pull the lanyard, the 12 gauge blank would go off, and drive that steel wedge down a guide of some sort SO FAST and SO HARD it splits the boulder........ I am close to Nyssa , Oregon < they claim is the geode capital of the world , but I dont know about that> .... But they have a lot of geodes in certain places , and I really , really do not want to drill any holes in hard , hard rock.. It is pretty hard to do . Ever hear of a powder wedge ?? Not for splitting rounds of wood , , its for splitting boulders , rock. I cant find one of these anywhere. Help please
Spooky memories!! Maybe you were a miner there in a previous life!!! muhahaha!!
I been to one in Oregon kinda looked like this
Was wondering if you made it to the Antoine, guess this answers that. Utica, flint are other alpine mines a few peaks over.
We will get to them next year!
Hey Frank! If someone did pull all of that stuff in, then why is it only your footprints in the mine? Wouldn't you see the other foot prints in the mud of the person who came and pulled all of the rock in to open the mine?
They may not have went in very far. I am not sure if it was a person it may have been a bear that dug it out.
Interesting, I guess no sign of bear-prints or other foot prints at or around the outside of the opening.
Maybe it was dark already when you reached the top of "ladders from hell" so you didn't see the light?
I think you mentioned how you might have to walk back in the dark.
No it was still light and I walked right up to it........the first time it was sealed.
@@exploringabandonedmines "Ladders from Hell" was my introduction to your vids, Frank. It became the video I recommend to ALL my friends as a sort of perfect Intro to your Channel. It showcases your mettle and determination (lol so I thought!!), but it turns out you did experience a little trepidation about having to go on and on and on. I was on the edge of my seat wondering if this ballsy guy would make it out and safe again!!! Glad you did, and glad I got a whole gang of my friends to subscribe to you.
P.S. Now a common saying amongst us is "I dont think Frank would even do this" if a sketchy choice is presented to us in life!!
Deja vu
Holy shit loved this one
As always love your videos bro. I love watching your videos and another Channel I watch is TVR expiration. One thing that drives me nuts is both you and him sometimes don't follow the rules lol. You guys follow the Left Right rules. I know it's hard but you should try to have someone be with you when you go. And the number one rule always tell people where you're going and when you expect to be back ! Lol enough of me sounding like a grandma😆. Stay safe my friend, can't wait for the next video
How could I tell someone where I am going if I don't know myself? I am out looking for mines I don't know where they are before I go and look!
@@exploringabandonedmines lol fair enough Frank. Have fun be safe see you in the next video bro.
@@exploringabandonedmines great to find a place that you can just drift round with both mines and scenery. I always look forward to your next instalment.
lol i love all the doubt in the beginning. I've been here, but i couldn't have....but I have.....noooo I....yes
Hey frank, what is the strangest thing youve ever seen in a mine? A few years ago, i lived by an old lead mine, found a way in and found a functional drill. Couldn't take it back because of weight, but it looked brand-new
Maybe a rabbit!
I like this video
i think the biggest thing that would help with the big shoot is multiple camera angles
More hours of film and time spent editing would make a big difference also!
Dig the Seven Dust Tune at the end.
Love the Drone videos . What kind of Drone are you using Frank?
I have the DJI Phantom 4. I am on my third one!
Thanks Frank.
Hey Frank. Question...if you find deposits like you did in the last mine, could you get in contact with a company and tell them, "hey there's a pocket here of this stuff you should consider looking into"? or would it be one of those things you don't want to tell them in case you aren't suppose to be in there in the first place from whoever owns the mine now?
Also have any companies seen your videos of these old mines and begun working at some of these again recently? The Hope Ruth one I remember seeing was one but have there been others lately?
Thanks.
First I don't know who owns the mine, but if I had to guess I would say it is Klondike Silver. So with Silver at $ 23 an ounce there would have to be a pretty rich deposit to open an old mine up in a remote location like that.
Gotcha. Thanks for the reply.
Frank you have been in this mine before
Yes I was......check out the "ladders from hell video"
Its deja vu all over again. Or, did you step through a worm hole?
You gotta keep your blue paint. Lol
I will do my best to keep you warm and entertained this winter!
Lol your great arguing with your self that's great .. has your wife ever explored mines with you... Love the colors in the mine . Looks like great fun except the climb down up would be harder for my old ass
I have dragged a lot of people into mines, I am not married........anymore!
What State are you filming this mine ??????????????????🙄
It is in Canada
Frank, dumb question of the day? Do veins keep growing?
No hot water deposits the minerals. If the water stops there is no more growth.
Ah, like a volcano. Ty
Wow, your Body....legs and feet handle the coldest of water !
Who else saw the white dot at the bottom of the mountain at 0:55? What is it?
Snow!
Exploring Abandoned Mines haha it looks like a glitch in the camera
It's a dream...you can't get out...
Another mineral to keep an eye out for is tetrahedrite. Its also a shiny metallic silver colored ore that's very heavy. www.mindat.org/min-3924.html
Lithuania sure is a beautiful country. What are the chances of you featuring an abandoned mine in your home country of Croatia?
You are confusing me with someone else I have never even been there. Born and spent my whole life in Canada.
i am a mine examiner by trade in the state of pa. always put in chalk your time date and initals at the face then you will know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They don't use carbide lamps any more?
Which drone do yo use?
DJI Phantom 4
Thank you. Love your videos by the way, takes me back to being a kids and exploring local adits and the ruins over at Poldice Valley. Oddly my young daughter loves watching your videos too ... guess I handed down some explorer genes to her too :)
Hey brother I call it O.P.S old people syndrome or O.M.S old minor syndrome I knew I was here!?!? FYI I am a old pit miner
Considering the abandoned equipment and buildings that people just left, who owns these old mines and who is responsible for cleaning up the mess?
Before 1969 the mining companies could just walk away there was no reclamation. Since then mining companies have to post a bond........but many times the clean up would cost more than the bond so many still just walk away.
Galena - PbS
Certainly is, but when it appears in veins is rarely pure, silver is a very common secondary metal which is found as an impurity, only on the order of 1-2% though.
