- Real talk? This is The Empire Strikes Back, and things may not look good for the Rebel Alliance, but they regroup and come out on top. I.e. these problems don't lessen my love for this car at all. It's still so rewarding to have the amenities and driving experience that is BMW. Hopefully the copious meme use keeps the mood light while Hoth base is being pulverized. And maybe we should've followed this video with the "things I love" BUT the Jedi will return with a force that is the M54B30 engine: an all-star that will make for a good book-end in this trilogy.

My 03 has a 6speed manual AND a clutch pedal.
😂 that’s why I just bought a black 3.0i with the same ruclips.net/video/ZQMxU4VcdHk/видео.html
@@DavidBello Mines Black as well.
I have a 05 5speed manual
@@CarsofGlasgow I absolutely love these cars. quirks and all.
@@DavidBello do you guys recommend this car as a daily???
It certainly has its quirks but I love my Z4. It’s quick, small, dynamic, and just fun as hell. Totally worth all the nonsense.
I feel ya z4 owners , wife called it THE MONEY PIT , so i Sold iT !
3 months passed , missed it , planning to buy another one !
The Z4 is as timeless as the E46 Facelift. Love the commentary lol. I love my E46 no matter if things are not perfect all the time like every car...
I have a really high spec E46 2.2i with tourmaline violet paint and Purple nappa leather interior and all the options and I have two months to find an offroad parking space for it. (uk)
I was restoring it gradually.
I bought two wings recently. I researched decent home sprayjobs and made a decent fist of the first one.
I had planned to do the other one soon but it's looking like I'm going to have to scrap her. Eviction. Owner is selling up after three years of tenancy.
PITA
If anyone wants this car email me.
EdShift@gmail.com.
150,000 miles and never missed a beat.
Been stationary for about a year so brakes will need work.
Free to a good home.
Luv and Peace.
It last had an mot 2 years ago so it's not that far gone.
The brakes are binding but beyond that It will drive fine.
I bought it at 70,000 and it had nothing but motorway miles to 150,000.
I used to commute 1 hour to work each day as a developer for an oil company.
Racked up the miles but it always got what it needed.
I cannot bring myself to scrap it.
It's a really high end (optioned) e46 and there can't be too many of them still on the road.
Get in touch if you're willing to take this on.
More Luv and Peace.
Mine was extended leather package. I also have the aux jack where you have the cigarette lighter in front of the shifter.
I enjoy your vids man!
Love the vids as always and as tempting as a newer Beemer is, my 240 just ticks all of the boxes still!
Daniel Marshall Volvo 240, 0-60: yes. Lol I am buying another 245 soon because I do miss a car that I can stand on the roof. And actually put things in.
That clunk on the rear axle is the diff , my manual 3.0 2004 also does it , when I was replacing the clutch I noticed it’s play purely in the diff ... must be an age thing
Is yours not the business CD player? Mine is an 06 and it has integral BT. The passkey is in the manual or on the bt module behind the rear fascia. Otherwise you can possibly get it from the stealership with your vin.
Hey man, I just bought an 06 Z4 with the 6spd manual trans. I think your videos are great and funny at same time. Keep it up!
Everything about this video was great!
well my bmw z4 it is perfect, none of these problems inssues you have, the only i do is place a module console and an one din android radio with touch screen to see videos and gps. my bmw is 2004 year with 22.000 km
2008 165k km but no problems currently. I had a cooler tank leak, replaced some rubber gaskets, and preventively: water pump, thermostat, solenoids, ignition coils
I'm contemplating trading in my 2.5i S (m54b25) for a 3.0Si (n52) but they are very hard to find with a manual gearbox where i live. Anyone owned a 2.5 and a 3.0 / 3.0Si? I'm really curious if its a noticeable upgrade. And if the SMG is that much of a downgrade from a manual gearbox. I love manual shifting, but semi sounds like a sort of compromise i might be able to live with.. but ive never driven one.
Do your driving gloves fit in the glove box?
Yikes! This car has been through the wars hey. How many miles do you have on her?
Would you have a link to your phone holder please? I can’t find one that I like for my Z. Thanks 👍
Ray B that’s a magnetic/suction cup thing from AUTOZONE i bought in 2016. The suction cup is one of those extra grippy porous goopy rubber ones that you have to wash and keep dust off so it will stick to anything. It’s the same material used in those phone holder ads where you stick the phone to the wall or fridge and it grips to almost every surface.
a bit to heavy usage of the memes dont you think? ^^ i wanna se more volvos, what do you think about the volvo v50? would love to see a build about this car.
pontus laurell working hard to keep the mood light since the complaints can become real downers. The V50 is essentially an S40 estate-the entry level Volvo that tends to be the first one to go, usually when the non-metered expansion tank breaks and overheats the car. But I wouldn’t mind an AWD 5 speed model. That’s what I call a Mini-R.
I think I'll.pass on buying, I'm an electronics guy retired but there's to much soldering going on do they come with a soldering iron? Time to look at mustang GTs
The commentary is gold
I have a 5 speed E85 2.5i and it has a few issues too
CarsofGlasgow but we still love them :)
@@DavidBello We do! Had the roof down much?
one of the best bimmers ) only with m54*
I’m glad my e86 Coupe never came with lousy SMG. And, because of this fact - the car is simply phenomenal.
Yeah I have a z4 2007 3.0i alot different .
The only bmw's I own are 70's airhead motorcycles. What makes me reluctant about newer BMW products is the gadget fixation. When it works its great. And when it breaks, the parts are insanely expensive. This is probably true for many newer vehicles, not just BMW's. Maybe that is the full price of performance - maintenance. I think if I was to ditch my Miata, a Honda s2000 would be the replacement.
Team Ground02 true, the parts come at a premium. Some good non-OE companies exist for these. But from what I’ve seen these BMWs look pretty easy to wrench on. No, not even close to the Miata or S2K. But definitely doesn’t require fancy scanners or software like The S60R. This is a simple car, before early iDrive was standard. Well, as simple as BMW was willing to be. Haha. Thanks for watching!
Someone just offered me a swap, his Z4 3.0 SMG (2004) for my Audi A5 3.0 240hp (2007).
Is it worth it?
Dan depends on condition of both cars....
@@danielmiklas4893 I'm a bit scared about the SMG part. For example in my car one of the most expensive repairs is the turbo and I fully overhauled it for around 500 USD in my country. However, I'm afraid the SMG would be a completely different story and it would go up to 3000 USD even here.
This reminded me of the problems I've had with BMW in the past. I've been thinking of trading my Miata for a Z4 this year but not after watching this. Thanks for showing me the light :-).
Just go for the M, manual (stick) only...?
@@WanderingFriar I've had a 316, 2 x 318, 525 and a 730, all except the latter were manual stick shifts. Gearboxes were never a problem, more like everything else, brakes, electrics, sensors, instruments, oil leaks and premature rust. As for parts prices, don't go there.
Nice vid man, I heard the ride quality sucks, does it? I mean is it bearable?
Sam Watkins it’s firm, and sporty, like the 128i or my NA Miata with Eibach suspension, but the bitter wheels help. This has the M sport suspension option which is a bit lower and stiffer. That’s all to say I really enjoy it.
@@DavidBello thank you, I currently live in lebanon, the roads here are terrible and I was thinking to get it and use it as a daily drive but now I am reconsidering that! Thanks
There is a 15mm greater ride height with the 2.5 SE version.
you forgot to mention how the steering gets super tight when it gets over 80°F outside.
Try lubricating the two universal joints on the steering column with oil. Mine initially felt a bit nervous on motorways, this totally cured it. We never 80F get in the Highlands of Scotland :-)
@@unixnerd23 ive seen that fix too, may try it
The biggest fuckup with the z4 is the roof motor placement.
In scotland with our rain it will last six months after a refresh maybe.
The boot relocation mod is a must.
Attempting that this spring.
Goddamn well of death.
Luv and Peace.
Edited : Roof.
Maybe an smg pump is one of those things you can get inside of and fix? Or buy a used one. Also I got a bmw i3 (everyone hates them so they are cheap), and it's premium and i love it!
Nick's DIY yes some people have serviced just the motor. It’s like the key fobs, where BMW says “not serviceable, must buy new $2-300 key” when the battery can be replaced if you’re willing to cut and solder.
I also drove an i3 for the first time last week and loved it! That regen braking is a class of its own! How cool is that carbon fibre too!?
@@DavidBello Yeah I love the carbon fiber, finally not just a cosmetic thing! Still love my Volvo 740, I tried to sell it but almost cried, so I kept it.
Is that your 240 wagon?
jsegura525 I wish. I saw it in town and just had to shoot it.
Love my 2003 Z4 but it's not as well made as my E46 touring from the same year. Roof is miles better than my old Z3. Your SMG isn't the same one the M3 had, it's a cheaper unit. Steering is horrible with Sport button off. Yours seems a really bad example. Central locking failure GM5 is very common though.
The post restyling has AUX input.
Btw you're right in the most of the things hahaha.
HellndZ Z4 I will try the $10 Amazon aux plugin. But I don’t think I can learn to love the SMG... everything else is passable.
I have owned my z4 for over a year I just reached 55,000 miles. Not a single repair needed except for the motor for the convertible top.
If you are looking to get the aux audio buy it from BMW the other ones will not work, the adaptor is about $85.
New God the $10 Amazon one worked fine, it just needed some extra glue to hold on place.
How much did you spend for the motor and installation?
Volvo s60r please
Andy's Videos i can only afford one expensive European at a time 😞
The Z4 model was built in the USA. Fyi
NO CLUTCH?
NOT A MANUAL!

HHRRRRRRRRGGHH
simon cutler I hear this voice in my head every time I drive it.
@@DavidBello Beautiful car tho!
Opens with driving gloves reaching onto footwell.... pause... comment ...leaves
Things seemed cool on this car until this one. I think I'll take the miata problems anytime!
RhettyforFun I’m willing to work through these problems, because the driving experience is so rewarding.
Settle for generic... Miata will serve you well.
What’s the deal with those gloves? And the pants... Sounds like you should sell that car to someone who would appreciate it.
My only bitch is the useless cup holders. Other than that I love the thing.
Having worked at BMW as a technician for 10 years up until last year and seeing this E85 sent chills down my spine, mainly the SMG, but man I truly disliked these, the early ones were problem children in the electronics department, the later ones mechanically flawed, I wish you good luck and no problems with it but I can in no way suggest you won't.
As a side bar, I drove a BMW X5 (E70) when I worked there to "fit in" but the huge problems I saw with them ended up trading it in across the street for a Lexus GX, and last year I went across the street and started working there. Unfortunately the quality hasn't been at BMW since the early days of the E46. Again I pray you have happy miles in this car because they turn south really quickly.
dodgecrazy1970 I understand that completely. You’ll be somewhat relieved to know I bought a 6 speed z4 just a few days ago. That one has 275k miles so it’s absolutely going to need more repairs in other departments but the engine sounds great and the Trans shifts like a charm. I’m selling the SMG one here. I did repair the GM5 myself so the only thing left to fix is the top hydraulic motors and sell it while she’s still all there. I will miss the condition of this car though.
In the u.k. the police have a thing called due care & attention which means they can prosecute you for anything, drinking, eating, mobile phone, tuning the radio whilst driving
Why ru wearing gloves that’s the funniest thing ever haha
Dat faux Brit accent doe
I hate the unreliability
BMW Reviewer so far so good! 🤞🤞
Leather gloves for a Z4.........
Take it from a guy who wears driving gloves 😂😂😂 ahhhhhh
Why so many memes
Premium cars and a kia has better electronics and door switches 😂
your Z4 is kinda broken, my is 99% condition and i dont have any of theese problems, all plastic stuffs are like brand new, everything is awesome, expect my audio modul in trunk is broken, maybe you should treat your Z4 better buddy....
Defelater better? You forget I just bought the thing so that’s how it’s aged.
You missed my biggest dislike, and a deal breaker at that: there is no spare tire and no provision for adding one. I am often way beyond the 50 mile range of a run flat tire, and am on the road at all hours of the day and night. A deflated tire at 2 or 3 in the morning, and more than 50 miles from either work or home would mean an impossible trip to work or wherever I would be heading. Then have to hope that a tire shop is able to get a correct tire quickly AND that they have the equipment to mount it once they do get it. Hopeless and useless. Another dislike is the automatic climate control. Driving a 31 year old Volvo 240, I am all too familiar with Bosch electronics. They are hopeless. I can only imagine the cost of repairing that. The 3rd dislike is that everything is run through computers. There is no need for the computers to second guess locking and unlocking the doors, no excuse for operating the headlamps through the computer, and insane that the wipers are being second guessed by the computer. All reasons for me to avoid a car like that, no matter how nice the car is.
I have a e85 Z4, just a piece of shit.
Why
Miata > BMW Z3/4
Who's with me?
Leo Ukmar depends what you’re asking out of it.
David Bello So for which circumstances would you prefer each car?
Fuel economy, sound, stock power, quiet driving, safety, comfort: Z4
Track driving or building a Motorsport car, cheaper parts and greater aftermarket support, sun visors: Miata
Ease of maintenance/repairs/reliability: tie.
I haven’t driven a Z3 to experience the difference but from what I have read, the NB Miata seems to be the better car.
David Bello Thank your for your neutral and precise answer! Really appreciate that on your channel! I do have an NB on my own and since my hometown is just 20 minutes away from munich I do see Z3's more often. So I just can underline what you're saying!
