2022 Kia Telluride Towing Review: 5,000 Pound Test with U-Haul Trailer!

  • The 2022 Kia Telluride (and sibling, 2022 Hyundai Palisade) is rated to tow 5,000 pounds with a 500 pound tongue weight. Most outlets don't test towing, but we do! We loaded a 2015 VW Jetta on a U-Haul car trailer to see how well the #2022Telluride #towing experience would go. Total weight of the open trailer from U-Haul and the Jetta on top was right at the 5,000 pound limit.

    I have a fwd 2021 Telly. I bought it to replace my boat pulling Suburban. I found the tow capacity to be 1700 without trailer brakes and 5000 with. He boat weighs about 2000 and with the exceptional brakes in the Telluride, it tows great. I do use a clamp to silence the hitch and it tows really quiet. I get 22MPG pulling the trailer. Couldn’t get 20 out of the Suburban without a trailer. I get right at 30mpg on the highway with the Telly. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to buy the KIA.

    I’ll be attempting to use my wife’s Palisade to tow a stripped and caged BMW to the track this week with a u-haul. Didn’t expect to find a review that addresses almost precisely that scenario. This was confidence inspiring. Thanks!

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  Год назад

      Hah, glad it was so specifically helpful! Should be fine - as in this video the U-Haul trailer will force you to load very far forward and thus have a ton of tongue weight. Watch what you put in the back of the Palisade and try putting more weight in the back of the BMW if you can, instead.

    Nice video. I use my 2020 SX to tow my 21 foot pontoon boat with 90 hp outboard - total weight about 2,500 lbs. It does a great job and feels effortless for the Kia V6. I should note that getting from my summer house to the lake I drop the boat on includes about 2 miles of steep, poorly graded dirt road which the Telluride handles just fine. As to your comment about "feeling the slop" through the unibody, I couldn't agree more.

    The new 2024 Palisade has a specific tow mode and you can even set it by the weight of the trailer, you have to break in the vehicle for 1200 miles before towing, as well. It’s leveling and sway control it should work pretty well. Good test, review and info.

      Heh thanks, the E39 gets bonus points for having three pedals and rack and pinion steering 😍 The only real weakness with the Telluride is current dealer pricing on 'em. We are hearing reports of dealers in the DC metro area charging up to $20k over MSRP for loaded SX Nightfall models, and $5-10k over for lesser trims. The Telluride is a great vehicle *priced at MSRP* as with any other commonly-available family car.

    Thanks for making this video. Was trying to find a video that discussed towing in the telluride!! Wish you would have measured the rear end drop.. whether or not the self leveling kept the rear end sag a. little bit. Sort of wish you would have let us know what kind of gas mileage you got with towing 5,000 lbs. I would imagine it would be the same as other similar V6 engine's. But it still would be nice to see that. We have a smallish 2,000 lb a-Frame.. and that would be helpful to know for a similar camper what the towing MPG would be - flat.. But.. this was a great video.. Appreciate how KIA added in the self leving suspension, gave you a 7 way that run's all the way to the front cabin. Much better than your typical unibody mid-sized SUV.

    I am confused on the last part about payload and tow capacity. Are you saying add payload to tow capacity, or 5000 lbs is total working wieght, ie, what is being towed, hitch, and full payload on the car? I was under the impression that payload and tow capacity were separate

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  6 месяцев назад

      The Telluride is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. Payload includes what is inside the Telluride (people and cargo) and the tongue weight of the trailer. So if you're towing 5,000 pounds with a safe 10% tongue weight, you have to subtract 500 pounds from the rated payload of your specific Telluride. That payload is indicated on the doorjamb sticker. What is left in doing that math is what you can safely have inside the vehicle.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад

      We don't have that in our notes from this specific Telluride. Kia claims a max GVWR of 5,736 lbs for the AWD Telluride (in any trim with 7 seats) or 5,917 lbs (EX AWD with 8 seats) which is a start. But not GCWR as asked. You'd have to pop by a dealer and check a few door jamb stickers to see.

    Great review, lots of good detailed information. We have the Palisade and a boat. This really boost my confidence in being able to tow the boat. Still a little hesitant about how it will perform pulling up long inclines like Parleys Canyon in Utah.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +4

      Glad you enjoyed! Palisade should perform similarly to the Telluride. If you look at how new vehicles are tested for the sake of tow ratings, they all use that SAE J2807 test that involves long inclines on hot days with A/C blasting so you should be okay.
      Some basic tips for any tow vehicle on big grades:
      1. Shift manually if you are comfortable doing so, keep the engine in its power band. The Kia/Hyundai V6 in these makes peak power high in the revs so let it sit at 4500+ rpm so it doesn't struggle.
      2. Don't try to be a hero and maintain 75 mph up a big grade. Sit in the far right lane and do 55-60 if that's where everything feels comfortable. Hazards on if your speed differential is huge compared to free-flowing traffic.
      3. Keep an eye on the temp gauge. Every new car's temperature gauge is "buffered" in that it doesn't really move until things are already getting hot. If you see it start to move, pull over and stop, put it in Park and leave the engine running to circulate coolant and settle down a bit.

    Are there any downsides/cons/risks with the rear leveling? (I honestly don’t tow anything but was thinking I would add it just because might as well? And the rear leveling sounds like it may be good even when not towing?) If you have any info I’d love it!

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад

      The only "downside" is that the self-leveling shocks will, as with any other shock, wear out over time and need replacing - and they can be a little more expensive than a regular shock absorber. But that's a "once every 10 years" sort of thing to consider. Even if you don't tow anything, they are good to have if you'll frequently have the vehicle loaded with people or cargo - they work the same way (automatically) to prevent sag whether it's tongue weight on a trailer hitch or lots of people inside.

    Really enjoy your towing reviews. I'd be curious what your thoughts are on motorcycle hitch carriers. Specifically a product like the MotoTote or similar, with a sport bike, on the Telluride (or similar) hitch. There seems to be a lot of disagreement online about tongue weight vs the cantilevered weight of a hitch carrier.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +1

      We'd err on the side of caution with a hitch carrier. As you said, those carriers place a different, cantilevered kind of load on the hitch that is not a 100% analog to trailer tongue weight and how it is applied. The safest way to move a motorcycle with a Telluride would involve a motorcycle trailer.

    • @OutMotorsports

      Heh, not quite like that. They need constant weight on the rear of the car for a few miles of driving (either tongue weight from a trailer or people/cargo in the back of the Telluride) to get the fluid moving and pump the shocks up to level. • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +1

      Hey there - no, if you are using weight distribution you want to set the bars up *before* the rear load-levels itself. This can be frustrating on vehicles with air suspension as they'll detect the load and often start raising the rear before you can get the bars set up (which sends weight forward and changes tongue weight, i.e. how much load leveling you'd need) - in the Telluride's case there is no rush as it won't start leveling until you drive a bit.

      @@OutMotorsports I know this is a super old video. But we've been fighting a battle with dealerships and trailer places on whether or not the telluride can handle a weight distribution hitch with sway control due to having a unibody frame. Tried to hit up Kia directly and never heard anything back. Any help would be awesome!

    can you do this with 23/24 hyundai palisade?

      We can certainly try! Have to make sure Hyundai has one available with the towing package in our local fleet. If they do, we'll snag it.

    Do you by chance know what the GCWR for the Tellirude is? I can’t find this information anywhere.

      Unfortunately we don't, it may be on the doorjamb sticker but it's not available on the press materials or elsewhere on Kia's website.

    So you generally recommend the sport mode for any towing?

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад

      Yeah, it helps in the absence of a real Tow mode - or you can pop the shifter to its manual gate and change gears yourself. Given how the engine makes power, it's beneficial to let it rev more if you're towing, and the normal Drive programming may not do that on its own.

    The NUMBER ONE PROBLEM IS THAT WITHOUT TRAILER BRAKES, TRAILER WEIGHT LIMIT IS 1650 POUNDS!!!!!! Very Few boat trailers have brakes....

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +2

      Okay, well either use a trailer with brakes or use a different tow vehicle. Nobody's claiming the Telluride is the end-all-be-all of tow rigs... anything of substance *should* have trailer brakes for safety, whether it does or not is another issue.

    How would it tow in hot california summers going up 7% grades?

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +3

      You'll have to keep the engine revving in its power band, but the SAE J2807 test uses about a 7% grade (Davis Dam Grade in AZ) and requires a minimum temperature of 100° F at the base. AC must be running and cooling system must perform as normal. SAE does set a minimum speed of 40 mph, so the claim is not that you can do 75 mph up such a steep grade. There are further tests that use steeper grades for the sake of stopping and starting repeatedly.
      So, probably fine given the SAE test basically mimics the scenario you describe.

    You also have to consider Gross Combined Vehicle Weight.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  2 года назад +1

      You do! But if you know your trailer weight, tongue weight, and weight of what you're carrying, you'll likely be within the stated GCVW. Always worth doing the math if you aren't sure.

      The car itself isn't any more feminine than other cars (and assigning that kind of characteristic to any vehicle is silly) but hot moms absolutely drive Tellurides with amber DRLs. Hot dads do too.
