    It's great to grow for yourself but many others like myself want to make growing communities where we can trade. You can't grow everything. Get a community of growers together and have a huge variety of basically free food. We have set up a market in a small town of 2500 with about 200 growers and small livestock growers and it's been wonderful. We trade amongst ourselves and people that dont want to trade can purchase. Why deal with political beurocrats that want to control our food prices when we have the power to produce our own food?

      Ive got it down to a science now and u can grow enough produce to use fresh, and preserve several months worth of food in 100 square feet or less

      I agree 100%, I have been saying it would be excellent if you could get the support of communities. Even if it starts out small, you could start raising cattle and chickens and if someone doesn't want to mess with animals they can grow a garden and the people that have animals could trade eggs and chicken or beef for vegetables. And like you said, if you need more of something you just want to purchase it you can buy it. You could have someone get a dairy cow for milk. It would be so nice to get back to the old days where communities relied on each other and you know who is growing your food and what's going into it instead of just going to Walmart to get the absolute nastiest junk available because otherwise you have to pay 10 times more to get it from somewhere reputable. I love this idea and I would love to see more of it spreading across this country. Count me In!

    Few years later I still have my library garden and I love it. This video was super helpful to me because next years garden will hopefully be entirely based off the seeds I collect at the end of this year’s season.

    You didn’t mention how to store the seeds. Jar? Envelope? Plastic container? I saved pepper seeds from store bought hot cherry peppers I loved and green peppers from the market. I wrapped them dried in plastic wrap then in an envelope. They are still growing. I realize the importance of growing your own plants and herbs especially and I’m not a homesteader. I have two small decks on my condo and plant in containers. I start plants from themselves, ex: celery, scallions, etc. thanks for the tomato seed extraction info, will do that.

    I always save seeds from things I like but I agree this year seed saving is more important than ever before because we don't know what will be available come winter. I had ordered a lot.of.the seeds I wanted for.the year prior to the pandemic, but i had forgotten a few summer crop seeds and thought well I'll order those when its closer to seed starting time for those. Seed starting time came and I was blown away to find that I couldn't get things i wanted that I had not seed saved for whatever reason or things I had wanted to try this year for.the first time since I knew i was tripling the size of my garden even before the pandemic - that was just the plan for this year. Im still on waiting lists for things and fruit bushes I had ordered in April are still not here. Its been nuts. So save seeds! If you like it, save the seeds, even if it's from the grocery store, save it. You'll be a lot less stressed come spring garden seed starting time if you do. Great video thank you :)

    • @CountryLivingExperience

      It really depends on the plant. Like with okra, lettuce, broccoli, etc, you can stop watering them. With fruit bearing plants like melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc, you would have picked the fruit with the seeds in it so keep watering those to produce more fruit.

  • @daphneraven6745
    @daphneraven6745 2 года назад +7

    Sir, there’s one part of seeds that you haven’t spoken about here: potato seed.
    When I first started off growing vegetables, some very experienced farmers told me that the seed that comes from the little tomato at the top of the potatoes, is useless.
    That turns out to be false, and a great way to preserve your potato without having to save too many of your actual potatoes for seed for the next year, which could make a real difference in the leaner years. It also gives a person a great way to select traits that they like in a variety to emphasize, or to develop.
    Too Many people believe this lie; In my area, most people that grow potatoes believe that they have to go get new seed or order it every year. They don’t realize that they can work with the seed. As a result, over the last few years, many, many people have told me that the river ride is that they cannot get any longer, which were very reliable for them.
    Perhaps you wouldn’t mind speaking about that, and even possibly demonstrating how to produce your own potato from these seeds?

  • @robertkitchen3069
    @robertkitchen3069 Год назад

    Question about seeds. What about cross pollination? I grow a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, squash, and zucchini. Do I have to worry about true breeding? I know that cucumbers and melons may cross polinate and the fruit isn't desirable. Is this a big problem for your garden and how do you determine what isn't a viable food option for yourself? I'm not interested in seed sharing either, just trying to avoid growing interbred plants with useless fruit lol

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  Год назад

      Good question. I have not worried about it too much since I am growing for survival essentially. The best way to avoid a cross pollination issue is to keep fruit and veg from the same families at least 100ft apart from one another. That is not practical for most though.

    Can you save the seeds that have been dehydrated in slices of tomatoes?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  Год назад +1

      I am not sure because the coating around the seeds really needs to be removed first. If they were dehydrated, then that coating was not removed. Try it. I don't know if it will work.

    Can i cut the okra pod while still green and keep it till it dries ?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 года назад +1

      I am not sure. The seeds need to develop completely to be viable to plant again. The best way to do that is to leave them on the stalk until they dry.

    How long does seeds last

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 года назад

      It depends on the type of seed. For example: Eggplant is 4 to 5 years vs. Parsnip is 1 to 2 years. It also depends on how you store them. I have another video on storage here....ruclips.net/video/xX-M-F_GrAg/видео.html

    I don't do my tomatoes seeds like that. I just pour them straight from the tomatoes to the dirt and they grow and give me tomatoes.

    I'm starting to buy seed packs at grocery store and just save them for the future. I don't have garden space. Maybe when the entire American economy collapse? Also there is all this doom and gloom of a future famine world wide? Water and seeds will be more precious than gold and silver.

      @CountryLivingExperience I mean I could plant 100 cucumbers but once I harvest them all, in just a matter of weeks, I'd have 100 rotten cucumbers.
      Any tips for keeping a steady supply of food all season?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 месяца назад +1

      The plants will continue to produce throughout a season. You won’t get 100 at once from a few plants. You’ll get 10 or 15 at a time.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 месяца назад +1

      Or succession plant the plants. Only plant a few then a few weeks later plant more, then so on.
