Thanks for this. I have a volunteer cherry tomato growing in my garden this year, I like its characteristics so far and want to save some seed for next season. I will follow your technique!!!
I really can't believe how timely this is. It was just outside trimming my plants and thinking about saving three different varieties that really did well this year. Literally 20 minutes ago. This is great thank you.
I’ve been saving and using my seeds for a year or so but I never knew how to tell if a plant is cross pollinated or not. Your video was great - a good explanation plus good video pictures! Thank you!
Love the book recommendation! Thank- you for the video and the technique of cutting the tomato to save seeds and avoid a huge mess. Yes, label your seeds. 😂 I believe i have Boxcar Willie seeds. I planted Yellow Pear, Cherokee Purple, and Boxcar Willie. I gave away 6 and I think what I kept is Boxcar Willie? Label your seeds.
To spread the seeds on the plate add a little water and they will float apart. Use a piece of kitchen roll folded in 4, long ways as a wick on the edge of the water pool and capillary action will pull excess water off the plate and into the towel.
I've never fermented my tomato seeds, just put them into a sieve put under running water to clean them, then onto paper towel to dry and then store them. Never had a problem with seeds germinating.
Also, I use coffee filters, tuff paper but easy to roll and pop seeds off once dry. Paper plates work well too, but filters dry better and release easier.
Thank you fir sharing I feel I learnt allot can I ask the seeds you harvest from theses tomatoes by any chance do you sell them online snd if so are you able to ship to the Uk thank you fir your time
New subscriber. Looked up Fortuna tomatoes, all I found were F1 hybrids. I try and grow only heirloom veggies to save their seeds. Do you know where I could purchase the variety you showed, looked like a great tomato. Stay Well!!!!
Hello! It’s Fertunia and I’m probably the only one who has it. I will have a handful of seeds for sale, which I will offer through my instagram page in the next month or so.
Love that you share techniques and knowledge not just a tour of your garden. I appreciate that so much. Garden tours are nice too but love to learn from other gardeners and homesteaders. Thank you so much!
I want to actually save from a volunteer that came from my garden. It’s one of the most delicious tomatoes I’ve ever had and I want to stabilize the genetics.
Hi, thank you for the video and saving Seeds at home. My question is can this be done with store-bought tomatoes thank you so much again for your video.
Yes, you can save seeds from a store bought tomato. But if you don't know the variety you wouldn't know if it were a hybrid or not. Of course, you also wouldn't know if it were at risk for having cross pollinated.
I fermented seeds for 3 days and quite a few were already sprouting. I put them on paper towel because it was too hard to separate them. Now that they are dry I can’t tell which ones are not sprouted. I guess next spring I’ll have to plant a few at a time with hopes of some germination.
I want to kno where to buy non hybrid seeds. i am trying to start my own vegetable garden. i am from Honduras and Im trying to produce my own and make it financially since I am on my own.
Thank you for sharing how to save seeds. I always wanted to learn and I enjoyed your easy method. Also thank you for recommending that book on saving seeds I want to read that this summer. Great video ! Hope you have a wonderful growing season this Summer !
My method is a lot less messy. I squeeze the seeds onto a couple of layers of paper towel and when it dries, scrape the seeds into a little air tight canister. None of that depulping and rinsing over and over.
Great video, I also have seeds from my Grandfather, came from south of Rome in late 1910s. Our family has been saving seeds all this time, I look forward to trying some of your tips to improve my success.
Thanks for the tutorial! I grow mainly romas and had a good crop this year and was looking to save some. Your video was opportune! I also had a volunteer sprout elsewhere in my garden and I allowed it to grow and was able to harvest some of the most perfect looking tomatoes I've ever grown. I'm assuming its a hybrid, but I decided to save the seeds anyway. Here's hoping next year's plants run true to form from this year. 🤞
I was looking for possibly an easier way to harvest seeds. My method currently is squeeze out throw on a sieve and spray down, then throw on a plate to dry. No issues germinating any seeds. I appreciate the effort put into the video though
Thank you! That was extremely informative and helpful. I just saved seeds from my Jet Star and Amish Paste! Last fall I saved seeds from Sungold cherry tomatoes on a napkin. They germinated great but I’d like a tried & true method.
I don’t have Time for the gold standard method I just crush a tomato in a strainer and spray it with the water hose, -dump the seeds onto a paper plate or paper towel and let them dry - takes 1 minute
This is such a great explanation! I've just thrown away a huge batch of tomato seeds after they molded thoroughly and now I know it was a mistake. Thank you! Now I will have kilograms of tomato seeds, because I eat really a lot of it 😅
Suppose these are seeds I'm wanting to plant right away...at what stage can I plant them instead of storing them? Or do they need a long storage period as part of the process?
Wish I had seen this months ago. My aunt got a purple cherokee tomato from a friend of hers and brought it to me since she knew I wanted to start growing heirloom plants. I read to just dry them out. Didn't get a single seed to sprout. Lost the entire tomato and had nothing to show for it.
I am an avid seed collector and seed steward. I would love someof these seeds if possible. I will even trade you something for them. Please contact me. I have well over 3,000 varieties to chose from.

I did the same thing
I've never fermented mine either.
Same. And if you save year by year actually you also select for seeds that are more suitable for "easy seed-saving"
Also, I use coffee filters, tuff paper but easy to roll and pop seeds off once dry. Paper plates work well too, but filters dry better and release easier.

Those tomatos look awesome do you ever sale or share seeds
I do plan to sell some seeds, but that will be through my Instagram page 😊👍🏻
Any chance you could tell me where to get those Furtunia (*sp?) seeds at? I would gladly pay you for some :)
Looking for Fortuna seeds... those on a search were all F1 hybrids. Do you know a source for the heritage variety? Thanks.
Is it normal to have a lot of seeds germinate during this process? I let them sit for only 3 days.
I would really love to get my hands on some of the fertunia tomato seeds, but I can't find them anywhere. Do you know where I can purchase them?
Only a very few people have the seeds. 😊
What if it doesn’t mold? It’s been 5-6 days and nothing. Do I just wait longer?
Is it warm enough in your house for them to ferment?

This is the best tomato seed saving video I've seen yet. Thank you.

So well done - there is a career for you in video production
Thank you very much
I really appreciate that, thank you! 🥰
Ok, i am interested in the fertania seeds. Can you send a few?? I grow tomatoes for sauce and salsa mainly.
I just slice them and dry them on paper towels. I have no problem getting them to germinate; which is a understatement.
Very informative. I greatly appreciate the book suggestion.

Thank you for the detailed video. Best I have found so far.
Great videography and the best narration I have ever heard. Wonderful job. You could teach this method as well as saving seeds!! Jim in California
Great video it was very well explained thank you!

Can I get frutunia seeds from you ?
Tomato milking. Hmm
Love this video. Great bio explanation about which varieties to save
Suppose these are seeds I'm wanting to plant right away...at what stage can I plant them instead of storing them? Or do they need a long storage period as part of the process?
Just let them dry, then you can plant right away.
That was great!
Such an excellent video with clear concise instructions. Thank you. I shall definitely have a go now at saving the seeds from mt first tomato crop.
Glad it was helpful!
Where can we get this seed?
Could you set them out to dry in a greenhouse or coldframe, or is that too humid an environment?
I would not put them in the sun or keep them outdoors.
Thank you for the tip. I have been saving seeds for a long time, no expert, but I learned alot from you so thank you!
You bet! 🥰
thank you
Thank you. I think I am going to love your channel.
Thanks so much! 🥰
Forunato. Any suggestions for finding them?
You probably can’t. I hope to have some seeds available this winter.

Great video would it be the same for other things as well
No, each veggie has their own details and best practices when it comes to saving seeds. 👍🏻
A very well done video!!
Thank you very much!

Ahh bummer! FYI Cherokee Purple is a well known cross pollinator so the seeds might not have been true anyways. ❤️
@@wholefedhomestead Ah. Double shame then.
I would love to buy some Fertania tomato seeds, where can I purchase some? Thanks!
I plan have some available this winter- but that will only be through my Instagram page.
Is Fertania a F1 hybrid? The only ones close to that spelling on Google.
@wholefedhomestead is Ferania a hybrid? Probably bad spelling, but that's the only ones on Google.
