Id say everybody is different, mainly test your gear! I just looked at fill weight when I was looking... ive had great luck with the bag I picked! 0F degree Nemo sonic, I've back yard tested to -18! Just got back from Alaska, where overnight temps in Denali were -5F ish and 5F ish my 2 nights there.

You definitely need to do your homework when buying a bag or quilt. How much down fill is in your bag and how high the fill power is will tell you the temp rating. A reputable company will tell you how much fill is in your bag. And as you said they do their test with a proper r-value pad and thermal top and bottom with a hat and socks. People have a good bag but the wrong pad and blame it on the bag. I realize everyone is different but I have a Katabatic flex 30 degree quilt and can easily comfortably sleep with just base layers on, down to 30 and have several times taken it to 15 with all my clothes on. Buy once and cry once. I converted to a quilt, 4 years ago and will never go back. I think my quilt is my favorite piece of gear. And it only weighs 1 pound 7 ounces with 13.7 ounces of down. It’s a regular wide in size. Katabatic definitely is conservative with their ratings.

This is spot on!!!! Whole heartedly agree and appreciate the comment. I have tried a quilt once and really liked it. I think this is an area I need to check it out. Have an awesome day and keep adventuring!!!!
