I love how the last sentence is both you saying without John pointing it out you wouldn't have made the connection, but it can also say that without gathering together you can't make a beautiful connection together.

We lived in South Bend for 18 years and saw the Michiana Soccer Association grow. We attended every Notre Dame soccer game that our schedules would permit. I can't even begin to express how the sincere emotions that you put in to these videos make me feel. The strange profoundness of a video about soccer is something that I didn't know I wanted till I saw it. I have known about this channel for yonks but only started watching last year and I don't think I'll ever stop. There is such a gentle, fatherly passion in your videos that I adore. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Dear John - I told my former professor about you a few weeks ago. He was one of the people who encouraged me to pursue graduate work (which I did). It felt strange to come back to him years later (as a friend and colleague now) to recommend a young adult novelist as one of the most significant voices of wisdom in my life. As a fellow person of faith, I have wrestled with the themes you discuss so very many times. Oh and you also helped me move toward a fuller love for European football, so thanks for that as well. If our paths ever cross IRL, I owe you one.
These vlogs are so important to me, not only because John and Hank are amazing sources of perspective and humor, but also because they just... share. They share their life experiences, and their reasons for feeling a certain way, they share their perspectives about topics, simple and abstract with such relate-ability, but also by unconventional means at the same time. Who knew that I would think critically about what I love, and why I love it from a RUclips video about a man and his daughter going to a football meet-up, and getting to hold a monumental trophy whilst performing a joyful tap dance in front of two football superstars. My appreciation for life and the concepts that I work with every day that fundamentally makes me "me" have been greatly deepened over the years of watching 'vlogbrothers'. And I just wanted to share my gratitude for that. I've grown up watching your vlogs, figuratively and literally.
There's so much I've come to love in the world via RUclips purely because of the boundless enthusiasm of those who makes content about it. My favourite being Geoff and Vicki Marshall here in the UK who makes videos about trains and train stations but do it in such a way that every video is a uplifting moment that enables you to feel their joy about the things that they love. Every if we don't love a thing ourselves, we can feel and appreciate the love others have for it and in so are, for a moment, brought together by it.
I actually really needed this video in a way I never thought I would. After an incredibly low point in my battle against mental illness three years ago, Nerdfighteria was, quite literally, one of the only things carrying me through the darkness of my depression. I watched every video, listened to every podcast, read every book... now, a couple years later, I haven't read Hank's book, I don't listen to the podcasts, and I rarely watch the videos. Before, I would have bought a plane ticket to go see them on their mini tour, even if it was in a place I never would otherwise go to. Now, I'm not so sure I would buy a ticket if they came to my home town. It's not that I don't love Nerdfighteria anymore, but I have come to love other things, too, and have learned to balance my life in a way that is mentally healthy for me. As such, I have started to categorize myself as an outsider, thinking I could no longer be considered a Nerdfighter. But I am a Nerdfighter. I do love this community. It made me feel so much peace hearing John say that, truly, there are no outsiders, including in RUclips fandoms. So, yah. Thank you. I am happy to still be able to call this community my home, even if I never again dive as deeply as I did in the tuatara rabbit hole. ;)
So many thoughts on this. 1. I love how pure your joy is in this video. I'd do that too if I got to hold the 2014 National Championship College Football trophy. 2. The drive to South Bend was tedious when I went in 2011, I can't imagine how bad it is with construction. We used dead raccoons as "mile markers." 3. Alice is six?! Where have I been all this time? 4. This video is exactly why I enjoy this channel so much. The mix of emotions, facts, introspection and other valuable human experiences is always so well done, even when the fullness of that experience cannot be expressed.
John you some how always seem to make me feel better but especially today. I'm so happy you have a tribe that shares your enthusiasm and that you got to literally hold something so precious to you. Sending love ❤️
Got emotional watching this because it reminded me of how much I love the thing that I love but how hard it's been to love it alongside other people. It's given me a lot to think about.
I was lucky enough to see Hank and John on the tour for TATWD, and I had a similar reflection on the passing of time. I thought about when I started watching Vlogbrothers in 2012, and what a deeply sad, lonely person I was then. I had depression and serious anxiety problems going unchecked and I was suffering for it. I compared that time to the present that was October 2017, and how different my life was. In 2012 I didn’t think I would ever be “better.” I thought that was how I would always feel. I’ve had really low times since 2012, but also some really great times and throughout all that, Vlogbrothers was a constant for me. I always enjoy your videos! Thanks for all that you do.
This was lovely. I am a Dortmund fan who also loves kpop, so it felt like a personal miracle to find a video that speaks to both. Thank you, John. You made my day.
Oh John, you’ve made me cry. You must know how much love Nerdfighteria has for you. This is unbelievably sweet and smart and deep and wonderful, just like you. Thank you for continuing to give of yourself so generously to perfect strangers on the internet.
I'm not a football fan - though I am a hockey fan, so I understand loving a sport - but watching John react to being with that trophy made me beam. It's always a privilege to witness someone else's joy.
Well, I have now officially cried over something I really ~really~ don't care about. So thanks for that! But seriously, your absolute joy raising that cup was contagious. Thanks for sharing.
John, I often times refer to you as "future me." Partially because I relate to you so much. But mostly in hopes that one day I am as wise and kind as you are. Thank you, both you and Hank bring my life so much joy and new perspective.
i don't think a lot of people quite understand what being a part of something like a football club really feels like. it is so weird to me when people outside the "fan circle" question why we get emotional when a bunch of people we have never met score goals or make passes or create great tackles. a friend asked me why i refer to liverpool as "we", why it is "us" who won the champions league title, and i couldn't give her a coherent answer up until watching this video today. i don't know john green but here i am connecting with him on something bigger than him and i. when, for example, liverpool fans listen to "you'll never walk alone" and you hear those fist words, we feel the same things - pride, passion, joy, unity. it is crazy, especially from the road our team has taken. sports as a whole is something that has this unifying power, it is incredible.
We gather together to join in a journey Joyfully, mindfully making our way In beauty of woodlands and quiet peace of waters We sing a song of hope at the break of the day.
Awww! John, thank you for being willing to show us footage of you crying. It's touching that you're willing to show us just how much Liverpool means to you. We appreciate you!
As someone who doesn’t really root for sports teams, I was interested in how you got into Liverpool and what sets them apart from other teams. Do they have a special story of community, like AFC Wimbledon, are they “just” really good at football, and/or something else?
@@homeworkbreak4237 hi :) so usually fans of any sports teams will always have different stories as to why they root for the team they support and it is difficult to give an overarching reason why people would support the team. with liverpool however, personally speaking of course, there is just something more, like their slogan as of late has been: "this means more". i came to love liverpool coming out into my own growing up. my family is mainly man united fans so i grew up in a man united home but at the age of like 12 or 13, i discovered liverpool and they were at a pretty mediocre stage, having finished 7th or so in the table. i was not a hardcore football fan but my family has always been a sports family and with time my love for the sport and then liverpool intensified and i came to find that there is this passion in the team that i had never seen in any other, players and supporters alike. watch any video of the fans singing "you'll never walk alone" right before the match and you feel it from across the screen. i suggest watching the video of liverpool winning against barcelona in the uefa semi-final, and you will see that bond between the players and the fans. people say anfield is a fortress, a cheat code and it is. the fans are known as the 12th man because they are. it just means more, so much more and it is beautiful.
I absolutely adore your genuineness and sincerity, John. Watching your videos helps me remember to stop and take stock of the multitude of good thing I have in my life to celebrate. You and I are only 7 weeks apart in age, I also have a wide named Sarah, and my daughter is also six years old. I'm just a non famous, lowly junior high science teacher, however, but like I said...I have a lot to be thankful for. Thank you for your message, sir.
hands up if u thought john was gonna meet mayor pete (only because I know nothing about south bend other than that that is where he's the mayor of) (great vid though!)
John, your videos never fail to put a smile on my face. In fact, your books have actually saved my life. During a time of deep depression, your books made me feel important and loved. For that, I’m forever grateful!
How beautiful a moment to share with us, thank you, John. You have shown me so many beautiful moments through your work, John. It's touched me the way the cup touched you. 1,000 thanks!!
Question: how do I remember the “us” ‘s that I’m a part of that I care deeply about when I am far away from them? I’m a scientist and my work can be very solitary. But there are many people way across the world that might benefit from the work I put in at 11am on a Tuesday. Many, many Tuesdays.
I want to feel this togetherness, this love. But it can’t always be right there, it can only be there sometimes. Apartness is an important counterpoint to togetherness, and that can be so hard.
john, you're videos are such a beacon of hope and joy and connectedness in a world that can, at times, seem like those things no longer exist, or at least maybe no long matter. thank you for continuing to share them

This is a beautiful video- it's so nice that Alice has taken an interest in football too
Dear John - I told my former professor about you a few weeks ago.
I love following this channel and seeing John slowly carve out turns-of-phrase over time.
I cant comprehend a love for football, but when you make videos like this I move a little closer to understanding. Thank you John
i know nothing about soccer but boy the amount of emotion i felt seeing john so excited smacked me to somewhere new
It is possible to love others without fearing and hating The Other.
Top shelf content. Thoughtful, emotional and joyful. In less than 4 minutes, you took me on quite a journey.
So, yah. Thank you. I am happy to still be able to call this community my home, even if I never again dive as deeply as I did in the tuatara rabbit hole. ;)
John, we ALL love you. Thank you for being a part of our life!
This is now the second video in a row where I see a John being excited by holding Liverpool's cup (Oliver and then Green)
I have the biggest grin on my face, especially watching John being so giddy. Truly heartwarming.
I cried when i saw you with the European cup! You surely deserves it John and i love it when you make videos about football lol. #YNWA
John has one of the purest, most life-affirming smiles I’ve ever seen. Gives me hope for humanity.
The message of the video had me in tears but the Alice's-voice-cameos stole the show
John you some how always seem to make me feel better but especially today. I'm so happy you have a tribe that shares your enthusiasm and that you got to literally hold something so precious to you. Sending love ❤️
Oh man, I loved how excited and emotional John was! So happy for him that he got to experience that moment :)
Got emotional watching this because it reminded me of how much I love the thing that I love but how hard it's been to love it alongside other people. It's given me a lot to think about.
ohhgghhh I love these videossss they make my heart happy
I know nothing about liverpool or football but John's happiness is so genuine, it made me feel happy and emotional too.
Omg, I saw John went to South Bend and I thought he'd definitely sneak in a Mayor Pete reference in here
same haha
yeah, same! just more damning evidence of how ridiculously invested I am in this primary...
I got excited and thought he was going to talk about Mayor Pete, but I guess football and love is good too.
That was my first thought too! I wondered if he might mention Pete.
This might be one of my all time favourite vlogbrothers videos beacuse of how much it made me cry with happiness
Boy it's been a long time since we've seen a John happy dance.
We should really get some more of those. :)
John, you truly don’t ever forget to be awesome. Thank you for sharing this beautiful moment!
This is why I'm proud to say I'm a nerdfighter!🖤🖤
Oh John, you’ve made me cry. You must know how much love Nerdfighteria has for you. This is unbelievably sweet and smart and deep and wonderful, just like you. Thank you for continuing to give of yourself so generously to perfect strangers on the internet.
I will always be a vlogbrothers fan ❤️❤️
I'm not a football fan - though I am a hockey fan, so I understand loving a sport - but watching John react to being with that trophy made me beam. It's always a privilege to witness someone else's joy.
such beautiful words. thank you, john.
Well, I have now officially cried over something I really ~really~ don't care about. So thanks for that! But seriously, your absolute joy raising that cup was contagious. Thanks for sharing.
omg I can't stop smiling seeing you lift the trophy. I would've totally done the same
John, I often times refer to you as "future me." Partially because I relate to you so much. But mostly in hopes that one day I am as wise and kind as you are. Thank you, both you and Hank bring my life so much joy and new perspective.
"I'm not afraid to say that I wept."
...and I'm not afraid to say that I wept watching you weep, holding an enchanted object suddenly tangible.
i don't think a lot of people quite understand what being a part of something like a football club really feels like. it is so weird to me when people outside the "fan circle" question why we get emotional when a bunch of people we have never met score goals or make passes or create great tackles. a friend asked me why i refer to liverpool as "we", why it is "us" who won the champions league title, and i couldn't give her a coherent answer up until watching this video today. i don't know john green but here i am connecting with him on something bigger than him and i. when, for example, liverpool fans listen to "you'll never walk alone" and you hear those fist words, we feel the same things - pride, passion, joy, unity. it is crazy, especially from the road our team has taken. sports as a whole is something that has this unifying power, it is incredible.
Exactly. It IS us. It's OUR club. The club isn't the players or the manager or the staff. It's us. All of us. -John
We gather together to join in a journey
Joyfully, mindfully making our way
In beauty of woodlands and quiet peace of waters
We sing a song of hope at the break of the day.
Awww! John, thank you for being willing to show us footage of you crying. It's touching that you're willing to show us just how much Liverpool means to you. We appreciate you!
YOU'RE A LIVERPOOL FAN. i have never loved you more.
As someone who doesn’t really root for sports teams, I was interested in how you got into Liverpool and what sets them apart from other teams. Do they have a special story of community, like AFC Wimbledon, are they “just” really good at football, and/or something else?
@@homeworkbreak4237 hi :) so usually fans of any sports teams will always have different stories as to why they root for the team they support and it is difficult to give an overarching reason why people would support the team. with liverpool however, personally speaking of course, there is just something more, like their slogan as of late has been: "this means more". i came to love liverpool coming out into my own growing up. my family is mainly man united fans so i grew up in a man united home but at the age of like 12 or 13, i discovered liverpool and they were at a pretty mediocre stage, having finished 7th or so in the table. i was not a hardcore football fan but my family has always been a sports family and with time my love for the sport and then liverpool intensified and i came to find that there is this passion in the team that i had never seen in any other, players and supporters alike. watch any video of the fans singing "you'll never walk alone" right before the match and you feel it from across the screen. i suggest watching the video of liverpool winning against barcelona in the uefa semi-final, and you will see that bond between the players and the fans. people say anfield is a fortress, a cheat code and it is. the fans are known as the 12th man because they are. it just means more, so much more and it is beautiful.
mahlape makhetha YNWA
mahlape makhetha thanks for the feedback! I can see why this team can be important to so many people
I absolutely adore your genuineness and sincerity, John. Thank you for your message, sir.
hands up if u thought john was gonna meet mayor pete (only because I know nothing about south bend other than that that is where he's the mayor of)
(great vid though!)
John, your videos never fail to put a smile on my face. In fact, your books have actually saved my life. During a time of deep depression, your books made me feel important and loved. For that, I’m forever grateful!
south bend? #pete2020
in all seriousness, great video. you have a lot of amazing thoughts and ideas, and you’re a truly admirable person.
+
I feel so lucky to be a part of a community that appreciates loving stuff and genuine enthusiasm about different things.
I just heard south bend and got very excited cause mayor Pete!!!
john, you're videos are such a beacon of hope and joy and connectedness in a world that can, at times, seem like those things no longer exist, or at least maybe no long matter. thank you for continuing to share them
