My 2012 Giulietta QV is a smasher, purchased new in 2012 and still loving it, my interior still looks new, I think some people just dont look after stuff as well as others.
A true Giulietta expert! More than an average Italian garage... a few comments from a 10 year old model owner: steering wheel wear can be resolved by installing a better looking and sturdier MY 2014 steering wheel. The gear knob peeling can be resolved DYI by installing a new top shell (very cheap). The front grill (if broken can also be substituted with a MY 2014 grill, which can be found online for very cheap. The boot door cables can be repaired at home by simply removing the rubber joint and linking back the cables (better to add a few CM of cable). The squeaky suspensions can be resolved by spraying silicon lubricant on the moving rubber parts, which can be done when doing a tire change (I spray every 6 months and now at 110k the car is quieter than when it was 40k). Also now door handles are available on the web (no need to buy the full door panel). Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!
Thats what you call a detailed review, you went over things that wouldn't even bother me but atleast I know, very informative and useful, unlike many others out there.
Owned mine for 2 years, had 3 problems. 1, The wire for the stop start sensor under the gear stick became fatigued and snapped. I fixed it myself, no cost. 2, The heater fan stopped working. Turned out to be stuck so I poked it with a screwdriver and freed it then blasted it with a bit of WD40 and it's been fine since, no cost. 3, One of the front top mounts failed and I couldn't be bothered to do it myself in the cold, so booked it in. Cost £150. Its the Multiair Veloce and has done 79,000 miles, I do a lot of short journeys so change the oil every 6 months, which is about 3,000 miles for me. Great car.
Great buyer guide. I sold last month my AR Giulietta 1.4 Multiair TCT with 120.000km. In my case, I must repair/replace de boot wiring for two times (rear window heating, FM aerial, reverse light and real wiper terminal 30 source), the fuel cap locking mechanism (it's a very common issue), the door handle, the antiroll bar links, one front wheel bearing, one drive shaft and the battery terminal current sensor. I had also problems with the temperature sensor of air conditioning evaporator, that makes de A/C compressor didn't start (is just only clean it!). I only have wear signs in the interior door handle and in the surface of the front headlight plastic lampshade (normally in sunny Spain). Another typical issue related with heat and sun in south of Europe is dashboard crack in the passenger airbag zone. The airbag module warps and brake the plastic (same problem as FIAT 500s). No mechanical problem with the engine or the gearbox in 120.000 km and 5 years. Overall, 8/10. Best regards!
yes, good show. If you're buying a 1.4 petrol there's a few important things to check on the engine/gearbox. 1. engine not idling or running correctly which could be the multiair system, big fix. 2. engine and gearbox leaks which are common. 3. turbo failures, ie rattling bearings, or not enough boost. Also make sure it has the correct oil in the engine, as the multiair uses the oil as hydraulic oil, (as well as lubrication) to operate the parts within the multiair unit.
There is a website in the UK that supplies lots of parts for this car (Alfashop) like door handles etc, everything is pretty reasonable. A lot of these problems aren’t major and you’re not very likely to suffer from 2 or 3 of these problems if you keep this vehicle for a good length of time. People forget this model has been out for a very long time and problems with the earlier models get linked with the newer versions because they all look the same, unlike other manufacturers. I have a couple of niggles with the car but overall it’s a good car.
Had mine 18 months and this video has just show me the trip computer has more function on it then I knew about, thank you! Also in 18 months I've had: Temperature gauge has gone which isn't critical but it needs the entire wing mirror replacing to fix it although I've found reports online saying that this can be repaired by cleaning the connectors inside the wing mirror Gas struts in my boot went but that's not an Alfa fault and cost £30 to buy new ones Neutral output went on the stop start which stopped DNA working which cost £170 to get repaired and this was a cable that had snapped under the gear stick, the cable is about £15 but you've got to take the exhaust off to get to it and that was wear and tear because of where it is.
Also some other things to look out for from my QV : 1) The fuel flap tends to get stuck with age 2) The gear knob cover came loose after 50,000Kms on mine 3) The Air condtitioning sensor was playing up after 50,000kms also was replaced. Cost $100. Otherwise the car was fine no other major problems and quite happy with it.
The temp sensor has gone on mine and had too get the wing mirror replaced which ain't cheap, mind you its the only issue I've ever had but an annoying one
I have past three years accept oil change and tires change I never ever have a problem with 2.0 Diesel 170P I love it, this Car much better than Mercedes a class BMW 1 series Audi A3 once you start driving ALFA You will never go for any other brands I will highly recommend!

I am so happy that I have found your channel. Had a 156 in the past, now driving a 159 and looking to buy a 1.4 turbo petrol Giulietta. Thanks a lot for the in depth review, would appreciate if you have any advice for the petrol variants. Cheers
14:30 about timing belts from Alfa Romeo Giulietta manual: Regardless of kilometres travelled, the timing belt should be replaced at 4 years or 60,000 kilometres for vehicles operating in dusty areas and/or demanding use, long periods of idling and continuous stop-start driving. For vehicles operated outside the aforementioned conditions, timing belt replacement should occur at 6 years or 120,000 kilometres.
Had my 1.6 since March and absolutely love it, since buying it I’ve bought and refurbed a set of turbine wheels for it and put the facelift splitter damn on the front, the full leather seats in tan make it for me though, excellent video 👍🏼
Surprised you didn't mention changing the water pump with the cam belt. This is known weak point for all the multi valve diesels and it's imperative to change this as well. Totally agree on the change interval 48000 miles or 4 years!
Nice my next one after my 147 Just have my M.O.T Its oké bit rust so cone fix it and today install my Gta Headlights 😀looks Nice! With the xenon but thanks for this Video now I now where to look for!👍.
I must have a good one. Bought 4 years ago for £2k my 2011 2.0 JTDM Veloce in 140bhp format has had no major problems and has now covered 155k miles. In my ownership I've replaced the tailgate wiring at zero cost as I had all the stuff required (I rebuild old British sports cars as a hobby), put a set of Brembo discs and pads on, oil and filter changes each year and I've just last week replaced two front drop links, one lower wishbone and a snapped spring. The interior is squeak free, she does 65 plus MPG if I take it easy, and costs £35 for VED, £155 fully comp per year. The only problem now is an intermittent slipping clutch, but the car still drives and I'll keep going until its proper knackered - the parts are down in price now at £300 (Sachs) with the flywheel and silly release bearing/servo unit, or £200 for a QH solid flywheel conversion including clutch and pressure plate.
Totally agree about the space (or lack of it) for the left foot, maybe a hangover from the change to RHD? I also found that the three pedals are at different heights. The pre facelift seats are very hard and I thought it was like sitting on rather than in them. I think there’s a good reason that the TCT version commands a higher used price
Hi Neil, please could you do a similar video for the 240bhp 1750 Guilietta, perhaps just highlighting faults/issues for that particular model, like for eg the twin clutch gearbox and engine issues? I would imagine most of the issues you’ve spoken about here would apply to all Guiliettas? Many thanks for a very good video.
To anyone thinking of buying a Giulietta I've NOT had any of the issues raised in this video and I've had mine since 2014 it's the best car I've ever had hands down I've had no problems at all, its been cared for unlike the one in this video which is a wreck
at 75000 miles only had two issues wire loom left side of boot broke cable for brake lights repaired this myself very simple other issue i got is with the speakers sound randomly drops out on either the left or right front speakers but if i turn volume up it comes back probably a loose wire but i dont want to remove my dash to sort it xD other than them two issues the car has been great for me!
Okay, imagine for a second im in a country somewhere in south america, there is not an Alfa romeo concessionaire nor does the brand is popular, but there is indeed a FEWWWW! workshops of the brand and fiat. would you recommend buying an 2014 alfa romeo ?
Maybe I am being picky .. I drove quite a few of them brand new in 2016 . I found that on a hot summers day and car parked in the sun the Gearknob gets very hot to touch .. Not heard anyone burn their palm of the hand .. Does everyone use a good thick glove just to place on it ??
@@ItaliaAutos you reckon it's a solid buy, I checked for any rust on the sills and, drove nicely with no knock. Time will tell. She's at 100k on mileage, so that's why I'm a little nervous with it.
@@henrybridges4060 yeah sure, drives like a dream. BUT, some issue: 1) Blue and Me will eventually pack up, This caused the battery to die, if it does, it will cause the odometer to flash too. The fix, is to pull out the blue and me system completely with battery disconnected, a Small box behind the dash, reset the ECU with MultiECUScan, and plug in a Bluetooth adapter into the CD port as an alternative. 2)shorts in the famous "rear boot loom" this caused the boot light to drain my battery dead. Again, simple fix. 3) front passenger door handle broke, very annoying, seems Alfa decided to make these door handles of brittle plastic. Apart from that, and many days shouting, swearing and cursing that I would sell her, I did not, in fact I forget said arguments as soon as im gunning her down the open road. :D
Great guide. I have owned a 2010 1750tbi Cloverleaf for a year now, thankfully almost nothing I wasn't already aware of. These are fantastic cars, I don't regret trading in my old 147. My steering wheel ornament was degraded as you showed, I bought a new one from eBay and followed an airbag removal guide to change it. I'd recommended changing the wheel buttons whilst you're there, some wear out on older cars. I did have a turbo failure just after I bought it, but I've no idea what the previous owner did to cause that as it was within days. I'd also second weak gearboxes, I've just gone over 100K and my 4th synchro is a bit dodgy. 1st and 2nd are a bit unfriendly too, which is normal for lots of city miles. I'm assuming I'll have to have the box reconditioned in another year or so. I've had a couple of random airbag errors from loose plus, but I already owned MultiECUScan from my 147 so I was able to clear them without cost. They've not recurred since re-seating the connectors.
Great comprehensive review. But it is not clear for me whether the issues mentioned had actually happened over the years or is more of a collection of possible issue gathered for other owners as well?
i had a mutliair 1.4 was awful hated it.. the multiair unit went , luckily i want warranty. things i hated that my feet used to slip off the clutch, headlights were shit couldn't see anything at night. you just reminded me about the lack of foot well room.. i was really disappointed with my purchase at the time.
I can confirm the rear shocks are fragile. My car had a very twitchy rear-end, it transpired that both rear shocks were bent. It was an excuse to swap to Bilstein though, so nevermind :)
I couldn't help but Crack up during the whole video: This is a good quality car. If you have problems it might be with the engine or transmission, but the body and interior are very reliable. Except for the fog lights and side lights. Sometimes they corrode up and flicker. Oh, the door handles break sometimes too. And the rear lights fail because the wire looms wear out. Oh, the antennas fail too. But the interior is great. Decent quality. But sometimes the inner door handles break which is quite expensive to repair. And sometimes the hand brake wears out too. And the. And the flimsy plastic breaks. But they're a great car inside and out. Lol.
Don't think you'll get all those problems at once kid. And they are amazing cars, engines won award, highest euro cap safety, list goes on to why the cars amazing.
@@maxcarp805 Hi Max yep I am in the same situation. It would be my first car. Whilst of course Toyota Yaris, Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Audi A3 is in my search, since we can get the more unusual and stylish Alfa Romeo, we may as well.
The 1.4 multiair with 170bhp is the most favorable engine. Very quick and good on economy. All in all the cars very good, something different with 3 modes, and does not follow the typical alfa trademark of being unreliable.
Awesome guide! I am currently looking at a 2012 1.4 (940) giulietta and it makes a subtle soft whistle-like sound when rolling which seems to come from the wheel bearings, (even when rolling un neutral), which apparently is expensive to repair. That’s. my best guess for now :/
Got one model 2011 170 diesel, no problems at all. Great if you need to overtake or in dangerous situations with trucks. I respect the maintenance times strictly!
Hi, I've watched this vid many times, but now I'm thinking of getting one giulietta for myself. Could you give me your short personal opinion on TCT, diesel and petrol variants and facelift models reliability? Thanks in advance and keep up with great alfa content!
Hi again Just replaced battery of my giulietta which is using from 2013. The old battery came with her and it was a Exide sgm battery. Could not find same battery and replaced with Exide EK600 AGM type battery. Now, stop/start system isn't working since then. Do you have any idea ?
Just sol by BMW 320 from 2013 and got an offer to buy Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2012 2L (170hp) diesel for 2kk. I am going to commute a lot. Is it the right car to buy? Or it is going to cost me a lot in terms of exploitation ?
I put a Pure DAB unit in mine connected to the aux input. Streaming works, plus DAB and the call quality is better, probably because of the dedicated microphone.
I bought a 1.4 TB (not MA) last week and have returned to the Alfa fold after being away for a few years. It is infinity more interesting a car than my mk8 1.8 Honda Civic. Although in honesty the Honda is better designed, better screwed together and is easier to work on. Nothing on the Honda is in a stupid location and is logical. However the Giulietta rides far better as it has multi link rear suspension unlike the Civic's solid rear beam. The 1.4tb engine is great as it has plenty of low down torque, I don't drive fast these days so I don't care for top end performance. The main issue with the Giulietta is the random interior rattles, there's one from the dashboard near the central storage space and one on the driver's side doorcard, haven't quite nailed them down yet. Despite all this I'm loving Alfa ownership again. No other brand like it!
Really top notch video. What are the TCT gearbox's like for reliability please. Seriously considering one of these and will check out to see how far you are away for servicing etc
@@ItaliaAutos Thank you for coming back to me so quickly on this, much appreciated. @italiaautos Hi mate great in depth review after watching this I purchased a second hand diesel about 4 months back.... how much would I be looking at for a clutch and dual mass flywheel... I've heard horror stories
Hello friend I own a Alfa Romeo mito , I bought it new 2012 and the version is 1.4 95 hp distinctive.. now I have new born baby and I would like to buy a bigger one like giullietta.. my problem is that i can’t decide what engine to buy.. 1.4 with 120hp, 1.4 170 hp, or the 1.6 diesel 120 ph... can you help me decide please? I would like to buy 1.4 170hp for the power but 170 hp from a 1.4 engine isn’t a lot?? Would it break more often? Or is worth to upgrade to 1.750 cc.. a shit I am confused....
Do they still have the oil pump pickup seal or has the oil pump design changed? Causes low oil pressure on higher mileage 159’s on cold mornings and eventually knackers bottom end. Insignia’s and 2.0 Bravo’s suffering the same fault.
Nice video. The near suspension looks like the same from Stilo, did Giulietta have the same tray bushing? I don't know in UK, but in Brazil, even you use genuine parts, they don't have good durability
Hi there, great video. I'm thinking about buying one of these in 1.4 manual but never driven a Alpha before. Just wanted to know if you found the foot pedals were too close to each other as that would bug me? Also if the gear changes/clutch is smooth like; Ford, Honda, Audi? or is it tough like BMW manual gearboxes (which i do not like) as I find the clutch too heavy. (I'm not able to go & test drive due to Covid19 lockdown). would appreciate a reply, Thanks.
Buy one, the 1.4 engine is amazing and won an award. The pedals are close but in some people's eyes it's better. The gear change is amazing, not stiff but changes very well, with the clutch not being too heavy. Amazing car, and very different to the standard hatchback.
My wife had a 1.6 diesel . Great little car. Her first Alfa and liked it so much she went and bought a 2.1 litre Gulia

I found that on a hot summers day and car parked in the sun the Gearknob gets very hot to touch ..
Not heard anyone burn their palm of the hand ..
Does everyone use a good thick glove just to place on it ??
Don't forget to take your foot with you after storing it.
Thanks for the guide, it helped me a lot. I'm looking to buy a 2016 model when i'm 18 next year as my 1st car
Same here. Only issue im having is insurance. No clue how much it will be.
I’ve just bought a 2.0 Veloce JTDM, full service history, and timing and pump replaced. Pretty nervous, but she looked in great condition.
Nice.
@@ItaliaAutos you reckon it's a solid buy, I checked for any rust on the sills and, drove nicely with no knock. Time will tell. She's at 100k on mileage, so that's why I'm a little nervous with it.
@@DrumToTheBassWoop thinking of getting a similar car and mileage - low chance of a reply but any updates on how that car has been?
@@henrybridges4060 yeah sure, drives like a dream. BUT, some issue:
1) Blue and Me will eventually pack up, This caused the battery to die, if it does, it will cause the odometer to flash too.
Now u have had it for awhile whats it being like? Is it reliable?
I own an Alfa Giulietta, is there any chance you could show how to fix the hand brake
Nice one.
Great advice, thank you. Really put my mind at rest about repair costs on my QV-Line purchase👍
respected what is your recommendation for giulietta 1.4 tb 170 hp or 2.0 jtdm 170 hp they are both 2011 .. greetings from serbia :)
Good to see an Alfa Romeo with a relatively simple suspension setup. Is the Giulietta suspension as fragile as the 147/156/GT platform?
Nope. It is stronger than on older Alfas.
Great comprehensive review.
But it is not clear for me whether the issues mentioned had actually happened over the years or is more of a collection of possible issue gathered for other owners as well?
Great video mate. Is there anything else to look out for on the 1.4TB Multiair petrols?
i had a mutliair 1.4 was awful hated it.. the multiair unit went , luckily i want warranty. things i hated that my feet used to slip off the clutch, headlights were shit couldn't see anything at night. you just reminded me about the lack of foot well room.. i was really disappointed with my purchase at the time.
Unfotunalty a multi air needs servicing correctly or it can get blocked.
@@ItaliaAutos at the time my car was fairly new. i wouldnt get a another Giulietta. i think the 159 is a better car for the money
THEG12EG it’s all down to what Alfa suits you.
@@ItaliaAutos im justing at a cheap 159. spare and repairs car.. seller has said 1 x injector needs replacing.. what would you charge for that?
THEG12EG Petrol or diesel.
Brilliant thank you. Very informative. I'm about to purchase a 2017 giulietta 1.6 diesel and this video has been so helpful.
glad to be of help. please give the video a share on social media. thanks
I can confirm the rear shocks are fragile. My car had a very twitchy rear-end, it transpired that both rear shocks were bent. It was an excuse to swap to Bilstein though, so nevermind :)
reliable otherwise?
literally perfect timing
I say sod the diesel versions, too heavy at the front and it notices, as it does on the 147. Go for the multiair 170 petrol much better.
Just purchased a 2019 model and i have discovered a random cable dangling from the drivers foot well not sure why?
looking for this exact model, drove petrol engines all my life but thinking of switching to 2.0 150 hp diesel
Do it. Just try and buy a facelift car much more reliable
Thanks Very detailed assessment
Thanks for watching
@@jckedwards65 I think your missing the point. My comment was a summary of the video. Not my personal review.
The beauty of Alfa’s in a nutshell 👌
Just bought 2014 2.0 diesel 😊
Enjoy.
How is it going? Im looking to buy one too
Lovely guide! Anything special on a 2013 QV to look out for? Thinking of buying one.
turbos
May I know how to check the turbo?
Great video! Would you recommend the diesel engines for using it in the city? Greetings from Hungary.
Diesels are not for city driving 👍😀
Fantastic video, I'm looking and changing my 147 for the jtdm Giulietta and this will be very helpful when checking them over.
Glad it was helpful!
very detailed - thank you . I really want one , maybe 2011 but at the £2.5k budget. I am only seeing the £5-£8k as lowest prices.
look on Facebook marketplace, there are quite a few under 3,000
@@maxcarp805thank you
@@boisnae7760 no problem! I'm looking to get one as my first car, they're very nice, and quite different from the usual VW golf or Toyota yaris
@@boisnae7760 Yes, I would definitely say the Alfa is the best choice, especially if you have a high spec one, the interior is beautiful.
Really like the look of these cars - Have they got a good petrol engine selection? I’ve mostly seen reviews for diesel online.
The 1.4 multiair with 170bhp is the most favorable engine. Very quick and good on economy. All in all the cars very good, something different with 3 modes, and does not follow the typical alfa trademark of being unreliable.
I heard that camshaft can be problem on these 2.0. Is that true?
And can you do a review of 1.4 engines and difference between multiair and tb?
no issues that im aware of. tb is better due to multi air issues on early cars.
@Farina Marcini
Me too, no problems model 2011, how does it cost a new turbo ? Thx
What's your opinion on the 1.6jtdm? Would you prefer the 2.0 or 1.6 diesel?.
this is fantastic advice, what's the cloverleaf like for reliability?
Not to bad.
I can confirm the transmission from first second and third is quite hard on cold start. I’m wondering if the gear box oil change could help?
1st and 2nd gear also hard on mine for the first 10 mins, did u changed the oil or something?
Awesome guide! I am currently looking at a 2012 1.4 (940) giulietta and it makes a subtle soft whistle-like sound when rolling which seems to come from the wheel bearings, (even when rolling un neutral), which apparently is expensive to repair. That’s. my best guess for now :/
What about the tct gearbox?
the boxes are ok but clutches are not cheap to replace.
Great review man. Any particular advice on a 2016 Giulietta QV?
Clutch prices on a total are spectacular
Great review. Do you have anything to say about the TCT version?
its ok, not a proper auto but pretty good. very expensive for clutch replacement .
Hi again
Just replaced battery of my giulietta which is using from 2013. The old battery came with her and it was a Exide sgm battery. Could not find same battery and replaced with Exide EK600 AGM type battery. Now, stop/start system isn't working since then.
Do you have any idea ?
jinhitman temperature.
did u manage to ever find a fix?
Thx for your detailed review 😄👍👍
Thanks for the comment
9:23 and after - this diesel runs uneven with some strange clanking noises, especially when revving up (does is the end of DMF?)
Just sol by BMW 320 from 2013 and got an offer to buy Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2012 2L (170hp) diesel for 2kk. I am going to commute a lot. Is it the right car to buy? Or it is going to cost me a lot in terms of exploitation ?
There fine cars. Just make sure heater works and heats up through all the vents.
How about an 1.4l turbo petrol engine with automatic tct transmission?
About Giulietta 1.4 benzina 170Hp,is this engine ok,and does it have low fuel consumption?
Ok if services with correct oil
One got the the exact same model. Blue and me pairs with my phone but have never been able to stream music??
Just plug a usb stick in
I put a Pure DAB unit in mine connected to the aux input. Streaming works, plus DAB and the call quality is better, probably because of the dedicated microphone.
there's a spacific unit called blue my blue or something
someone is selling a 1.7 turbo, 230bhp, manual, for a reallllyyy good price, however it's fairly high mileage, at 110k miles. Should i? ....
Many thanks for the things to check before the buying. 👍
Thanks for watching

Yes, absolutely
Hello friend I own a Alfa Romeo mito , I bought it new 2012 and the version is 1.4 95 hp distinctive.. now I have new born baby and I would like to buy a bigger one like giullietta.. my problem is that i can’t decide what engine to buy.. 1.4 with 120hp, 1.4 170 hp, or the 1.6 diesel 120 ph... can you help me decide please? I would like to buy 1.4 170hp for the power but 170 hp from a 1.4 engine isn’t a lot?? Would it break more often? Or is worth to upgrade to 1.750 cc.. a shit I am confused....
go for a 2.0 diesel
@@deividasnavickas 170 bhp out of a 1.4 is really good power
