thanks Neil at italia autos.
My wife had a 1.6 diesel . Great little car. Her first Alfa and liked it so much she went and bought a 2.1 litre Gulia
My 2012 Giulietta QV is a smasher, purchased new in 2012 and still loving it, my interior still looks new, I think some people just dont look after stuff as well as others.
A true Giulietta expert! More than an average Italian garage... a few comments from a 10 year old model owner: steering wheel wear can be resolved by installing a better looking and sturdier MY 2014 steering wheel. The gear knob peeling can be resolved DYI by installing a new top shell (very cheap). The front grill (if broken can also be substituted with a MY 2014 grill, which can be found online for very cheap. The boot door cables can be repaired at home by simply removing the rubber joint and linking back the cables (better to add a few CM of cable). The squeaky suspensions can be resolved by spraying silicon lubricant on the moving rubber parts, which can be done when doing a tire change (I spray every 6 months and now at 110k the car is quieter than when it was 40k). Also now door handles are available on the web (no need to buy the full door panel).
Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing!
That's good that they make the handles now as when I made this video there was no option. 👍
@@ItaliaAutos yes, only recently they are becoming available... in Italy somebody has even been making them out of aluminum for some time!
Great buyer guide. I sold last month my AR Giulietta 1.4 Multiair TCT with 120.000km. In my case, I must repair/replace de boot wiring for two times (rear window heating, FM aerial, reverse light and real wiper terminal 30 source), the fuel cap locking mechanism (it's a very common issue), the door handle, the antiroll bar links, one front wheel bearing, one drive shaft and the battery terminal current sensor. I had also problems with the temperature sensor of air conditioning evaporator, that makes de A/C compressor didn't start (is just only clean it!). I only have wear signs in the interior door handle and in the surface of the front headlight plastic lampshade (normally in sunny Spain). Another typical issue related with heat and sun in south of Europe is dashboard crack in the passenger airbag zone. The airbag module warps and brake the plastic (same problem as FIAT 500s). No mechanical problem with the engine or the gearbox in 120.000 km and 5 years. Overall, 8/10. Best regards!
Owned mine for 2 years, had 3 problems.
1, The wire for the stop start sensor under the gear stick became fatigued and snapped. I fixed it myself, no cost.
2, The heater fan stopped working. Turned out to be stuck so I poked it with a screwdriver and freed it then blasted it with a bit of WD40 and it's been fine since, no cost.
3, One of the front top mounts failed and I couldn't be bothered to do it myself in the cold, so booked it in. Cost £150.
Its the Multiair Veloce and has done 79,000 miles, I do a lot of short journeys so change the oil every 6 months, which is about 3,000 miles for me. Great car.
That's the most comprehensive and informative buyers guide I've ever seen... THANK YOU.
That's what my channel is a bout no bull just honest content.
@@ItaliaAutos Thank you for such detail.. will be watching rest your videos, already a fan,,
Thinking about buying a used Giulietta. This comprehensive buyers guide was extremely useful. Thank you.
Had mine 18 months and this video has just show me the trip computer has more function on it then I knew about, thank you!
Also in 18 months I've had:
Temperature gauge has gone which isn't critical but it needs the entire wing mirror replacing to fix it although I've found reports online saying that this can be repaired by cleaning the connectors inside the wing mirror
Gas struts in my boot went but that's not an Alfa fault and cost £30 to buy new ones
Neutral output went on the stop start which stopped DNA working which cost £170 to get repaired and this was a cable that had snapped under the gear stick, the cable is about £15 but you've got to take the exhaust off to get to it and that was wear and tear because of where it is.
had mine 5 years defiantly best car I have ever owned still looks good Pearl fish makes it stand out in car park never had any problems. waiting for replacement model to come out
Neil Wheldon yeah nice, we do need smaller cars in the range,
I have past three years accept oil change and tires change I never ever have a problem with 2.0 Diesel 170P I love it, this Car much better than Mercedes a class BMW 1 series Audi A3 once you start driving ALFA You will never go for any other brands I will highly recommend!
Me too model 2011 no problems at all.
Surprised you didn't mention changing the water pump with the cam belt. This is known weak point for all the multi valve diesels and it's imperative to change this as well. Totally agree on the change interval 48000 miles or 4 years!
Yeah prob lots I forgot to say. ,😀😀
Have the car 5 years now, passes 80 kkm with it.. no problems whatsoever.
I have just bought a Alfa Romeo Giulietta 4 weeks ago I wish I’d seen this video before I purchased the car. Thank you for uploading 👍
how is it holding up ?
@@x7p7p The car is great 👍
Enjoy it
Heyyo andrew, why is that youre saying you wish you've seen this earlier? does the car have a lot of flaws?
@@juandiegofreireflorez3680 I had a few minor electrical issues but all good now.
Thats what you call a detailed review, you went over things that wouldn't even bother me but atleast I know, very informative and useful, unlike many others out there.
you are the absolute authority in alfas in the english speaking world, thank you.
Had mine 2 years jtdm -2 170 mapped to 220 love it 😁
awesome.
Had my 1.6 since March and absolutely love it, since buying it I’ve bought and refurbed a set of turbine wheels for it and put the facelift splitter damn on the front, the full leather seats in tan make it for me though, excellent video 👍🏼
Nice my next one after my 147 Just have my M.O.T Its oké bit rust so cone fix it and today install my Gta Headlights 😀looks Nice! With the xenon but thanks for this Video now I now where to look for!👍.
14:30 about timing belts from Alfa Romeo Giulietta manual:
Regardless of kilometres travelled, the timing belt should be replaced at 4 years or 60,000 kilometres for vehicles operating in dusty areas and/or demanding use, long periods of idling and continuous stop-start driving. For vehicles operated outside the aforementioned conditions, timing belt replacement should occur at 6 years or 120,000 kilometres.
In Spanish user and workshop manual, timing belt must be changed every 5 years in heavy use conditions (distance regardless)
To anyone thinking of buying a Giulietta I've NOT had any of the issues raised in this video and I've had mine since 2014 it's the best car I've ever had hands down I've had no problems at all, its been cared for unlike the one in this video which is a wreck
Sean siamo 4 me, no problems in 100.000km
at 75000 miles only had two issues wire loom left side of boot broke cable for brake lights repaired this myself very simple other issue i got is with the speakers sound randomly drops out on either the left or right front speakers but if i turn volume up it comes back probably a loose wire but i dont want to remove my dash to sort it xD
other than them two issues the car has been great for me!
I recommend avoiding the potholes when possible.
never easy in the UK lol
That’s all modern cars.
Good review, i am buying a white 2.0 jtdm 170 tomorrow after selling my civic type S gt 2.2
Hi, I'd appreciate it if you could share your experiences on both cars, since I'm looking for both of these? Thanks in advance!
Amazing how they keep putting the electronics where the rain collects. I had the same problem with my Z4 headlight ecu.
Hi Neil, please could you do a similar video for the 240bhp 1750 Guilietta, perhaps just highlighting faults/issues for that particular model, like for eg the twin clutch gearbox and engine issues? I would imagine most of the issues you’ve spoken about here would apply to all Guiliettas? Many thanks for a very good video.
Great guide, I’m looking to purchase a 1.4 17 plate next month so this has helped me out!
Great to hear!
Nice helpfull guide mate
Totally agree about the space (or lack of it) for the left foot, maybe a hangover from the change to RHD? I also found that the three pedals are at different heights. The pre facelift seats are very hard and I thought it was like sitting on rather than in them. I think there’s a good reason that the TCT version commands a higher used price
Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the guide, it helped me a lot. I'm looking to buy a 2016 model when i'm 18 next year as my 1st car
Same here. Only issue im having is insurance. No clue how much it will be.
I’ve just bought a 2.0 Veloce JTDM, full service history, and timing and pump replaced. Pretty nervous, but she looked in great condition.
Nice.
@@ItaliaAutos you reckon it's a solid buy, I checked for any rust on the sills and, drove nicely with no knock. Time will tell. She's at 100k on mileage, so that's why I'm a little nervous with it.
@@DrumToTheBassWoop thinking of getting a similar car and mileage - low chance of a reply but any updates on how that car has been?
@@henrybridges4060 yeah sure, drives like a dream. BUT, some issue:
1) Blue and Me will eventually pack up, This caused the battery to die, if it does, it will cause the odometer to flash too. The fix, is to pull out the blue and me system completely with battery disconnected, a Small box behind the dash, reset the ECU with MultiECUScan, and plug in a Bluetooth adapter into the CD port as an alternative.
2)shorts in the famous "rear boot loom" this caused the boot light to drain my battery dead. Again, simple fix.
3) front passenger door handle broke, very annoying, seems Alfa decided to make these door handles of brittle plastic.
Apart from that, and many days shouting, swearing and cursing that I would sell her, I did not, in fact I forget said arguments as soon as im gunning her down the open road. :D
Now u have had it for awhile whats it being like? Is it reliable?
good content! waiting for the much feared 166 :P
Great guide. I have owned a 2010 1750tbi Cloverleaf for a year now, thankfully almost nothing I wasn't already aware of. These are fantastic cars, I don't regret trading in my old 147. My steering wheel ornament was degraded as you showed, I bought a new one from eBay and followed an airbag removal guide to change it. I'd recommended changing the wheel buttons whilst you're there, some wear out on older cars. I did have a turbo failure just after I bought it, but I've no idea what the previous owner did to cause that as it was within days. I'd also second weak gearboxes, I've just gone over 100K and my 4th synchro is a bit dodgy. 1st and 2nd are a bit unfriendly too, which is normal for lots of city miles. I'm assuming I'll have to have the box reconditioned in another year or so. I've had a couple of random airbag errors from loose plus, but I already owned MultiECUScan from my 147 so I was able to clear them without cost. They've not recurred since re-seating the connectors.
I say sod the diesel versions, too heavy at the front and it notices, as it does on the 147. Go for the multiair 170 petrol much better.
very detailed - thank you . I really want one , maybe 2011 but at the £2.5k budget. I am only seeing the £5-£8k as lowest prices.
look on Facebook marketplace, there are quite a few under 3,000
@@maxcarp805thank you
@@boisnae7760 no problem! I'm looking to get one as my first car, they're very nice, and quite different from the usual VW golf or Toyota yaris
@@maxcarp805 Hi Max yep I am in the same situation. It would be my first car. Whilst of course Toyota Yaris, Vauxhall Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Audi A3 is in my search, since we can get the more unusual and stylish Alfa Romeo, we may as well.
@@boisnae7760 Yes, I would definitely say the Alfa is the best choice, especially if you have a high spec one, the interior is beautiful.
Just bought 2014 2.0 diesel 😊
Enjoy.
How is it going? Im looking to buy one too
Awesome guide! I am currently looking at a 2012 1.4 (940) giulietta and it makes a subtle soft whistle-like sound when rolling which seems to come from the wheel bearings, (even when rolling un neutral), which apparently is expensive to repair. That’s. my best guess for now :/
What about the tct gearbox?
the boxes are ok but clutches are not cheap to replace.
Got one model 2011 170 diesel, no problems at all. Great if you need to overtake or in dangerous situations with trucks.
I respect the maintenance times strictly!
Hi, I've watched this vid many times, but now I'm thinking of getting one giulietta for myself.
Could you give me your short personal opinion on TCT, diesel and petrol variants and facelift models reliability?
Thanks in advance and keep up with great alfa content!
I heard that camshaft can be problem on these 2.0. Is that true?
And can you do a review of 1.4 engines and difference between multiair and tb?
no issues that im aware of. tb is better due to multi air issues on early cars.
@Farina Marcini
Me too, no problems model 2011, how does it cost a new turbo ? Thx
Thx for your detailed review 😄👍👍
Thanks for the comment
Many thanks for the things to check before the buying. 👍

Hi again
Just replaced battery of my giulietta which is using from 2013. The old battery came with her and it was a Exide sgm battery. Could not find same battery and replaced with Exide EK600 AGM type battery. Now, stop/start system isn't working since then.
Do you have any idea ?
jinhitman temperature.
did u manage to ever find a fix?
You are doing a awful good job that's real worth visiting
One got the the exact same model. Blue and me pairs with my phone but have never been able to stream music??
Just plug a usb stick in
I put a Pure DAB unit in mine connected to the aux input. Streaming works, plus DAB and the call quality is better, probably because of the dedicated microphone.
there's a spacific unit called blue my blue or something
Great review man. Any particular advice on a 2016 Giulietta QV?
Clutch prices on a total are spectacular
What's your opinion on the 1.6jtdm? Would you prefer the 2.0 or 1.6 diesel?.
How about an 1.4l turbo petrol engine with automatic tct transmission?
@italiaautos Hi mate great in depth review after watching this I purchased a second hand diesel about 4 months back.... how much would I be looking at for a clutch and dual mass flywheel... I've heard horror stories
Last one was around £1000.
Was considering one of these, but after watching this comprehensive list of faults and things that drop off I think I’ll pass, fortunately the underbody doesn’t have many problems? Probably because it’s just pressed steel or I’m sure they’d be riddled with faults like the rest of the car is.
I think I’ll keep my focus now
its a what to look out for not an everything goes wrong with them.
Absolutely, and I follow your channel and enjoy your videos, however I was a little concerned re the door handles and interior door card thing, engine bits like Egr etc are to be expected though.
Knowing me I’ll probably just take the plunge anyway and chance it, I just just love the way they look, give it a few days and I’ll love them again! I havnt got it yet but I’ve an ebay basket full of accessories for it!
Love your honest vids though, thanks for replying and keep up the good work 👍🏻
@@davidcooper4631 the newer ones have most of these faults fixed.
@@ItaliaAutos now that’s what I wanted to hear!!! What year onwards should I look at please? I’m more or less set on the 2.0 diesel auto with the tct in veloce spec in red or black, just waiting on the restrictions to end so I can travel, they’re all miles away from me 🙄
@@davidcooper4631 big update 2014 onwards. But all are reliable. Here possible faults are listed but I have had 4 trouble free years from mine
Do you also do fiat 500 buyers guide?
Remi D when I get round to it I will.
In Oct 2021 you will have to pay around £24 per day to drive a Diesel within the North/South Circ in London.
Some other pre 2005 petrol cars will have the same fate. I'm interested in replacing a 02 147 2ltr Tspark for that very reason.
My point ? I see that you are providing a buyer's guide here based on a Diesel engine. I think you have also done a buyer's guide on other models but again based on diesels... E.g. 1.9 version. Can you possibly do an edit at the end to say why you favour the diesel over the others or say a separate video for pros and cons of the engine types ?
craigk621 diesels are just the most common car I have in other than Ts.
@@ItaliaAutos likely they will do the same in central Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool etc in the next few years..... so you might get offered even more diesels then ;).

Edit: just looked up Birmingham and your equivalent is the CAZ..and that's from next year !!

I don't know why more yt car videos don't mention this... as it's likely a game changer.

www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-england-birmingham-44551122
"Paying would only apply to non-compliant vehicles - diesels manufactured before 2015 and petrol cars made before 2006."
Don't shoot the messenger !!!
Great video! I've had my 2013 2.0 diesel for a few months and love but it's quite smelly in the engine bay. I've tried to find a guide to clean the egr valve but cant find a good one. I've had the throttle body off and cleaned that, wasnt that dirty. If you could do a video how to remove and clean/replace the egr that would be great. Theres quite a few posts on the forum where people have asked for a guide, I think people would love it. Thanks again and keep up the good work!! Cheers
Thanks. Next one i do I'll film it
@@ItaliaAutos amazing, thank you!
Do they still have the oil pump pickup seal or has the oil pump design changed? Causes low oil pressure on higher mileage 159’s on cold mornings and eventually knackers bottom end. Insignia’s and 2.0 Bravo’s suffering the same fault.
This is fantastic, thank you
Just sol by BMW 320 from 2013 and got an offer to buy Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2012 2L (170hp) diesel for 2kk. I am going to commute a lot. Is it the right car to buy? Or it is going to cost me a lot in terms of exploitation ?

Does the Giulietta have enough room to install a fuel operated heater? Like Webasto or Eberspächer
Wouldn't have a clue. We done need them here in the uk
Yes, I have an Eberspacher fitted in my Giulietta 2.0 jtdm.
Yes they do. Mulla on bensakoneisessa ja on varsin hyvään paikkaan asennettu. Helppo huoltaa jos tarvitsee. Toisaalta bensakoneisessa en ymmärrä webaston etua kun kone lämpeää näin talvellakin muutaman kilometrin ajolla.

Good honest review, but you’ve convinced me never to buy an Alfa..
Giuliettas and Mitos are the most reliable alfa romeos. Cheap to run as well.
Cam belts on these only 4 years in certain situations depending on usage, if memory serves me right it’s 6 years for cambelt 72k ??
Tom The coffee guru yeah I’d never let a belt on these go that long.
I’ve seen these go 120k plus on the original cambelt, on the Alfa specific service sheet for the 2.0 diesel it’s got the conditions for cambelt change such as high idle time, temperature conditions etc but under normal use it’s around 6 years
Tom The coffee guru I’ve seen a twins park go 15 years but I wouldn’t want to chance it again. Lol

There just like most cars out there. Look after them and you will be fine.
how are you an adult and not have any manners, I am asking a question about the cars not looking for an English lesson, kindly keep your disrespectful comments to yourself, and concentrate on trying to be a better human being, and not nit pick at the grammar of my question 😠.
@@tonyirving4154, a better human being takes responsibility for their actions by learning basic presentation skills and respects other people who routinely find it insulting and annoying having to forgive yet another umpteenth careless individual who couldn't be asked politely for a base minimum 11 years of intensive education at great public expense to remember one simple word and how to spell it correctly in context.
A human being is only separated from an animal to the extent to which they are conscious of the choices they make. Every 'human' decision is by definition, a conscious choice. All others are just base survival instincts, an enhanced tendency to appeal to which you may have noticed lately with the rise in the race bating news media's attempts to foment civil war simultaneously in multiple countries in combination with a bogus 'lockdown' policy to further divide and rule the global population as part of a greater depopulation agenda by enforced 'vaccination'.
You therefore chose not to listen for your entire life thus far to those who knew better and apparently tried in vain to teach you or lead by example. The English language has evolved into a rich banquet from which to draw not only a means of expression but inspiration. Words have meaning. They are thoughts made manifest. Should we ignore everything you think as well as say? You are literally telling the world how little you care what any of them think. The gesture is inevitably returned and you have the nerve to complain? Would you similarly complain to your bathroom mirror or weighing scales when they return a fat, disgusting slob with no self-respect?
This realisation that you chose to insult our intelligence rather than become a better human being, (more considerate and respectful of others), is the first step in your spiritual awakening. I shall await your barrage of insults or other confirmation that you are indeed, as ignorant as you appear. Obviously I am a horrible human being and also a 'conspiracy theorist' among other things you can decide to list for yourself, given the thin veneer of humanity that constitutes your ego at this point in time.
You either listen at school or get a reply like that when you're older. You chose the latter. You should not be shocked or surprised. Instead you should be thankful that someone took the time out of their day to attempt yet again to educate you despite the overwhelming evidence that it would not be well spent. You're welcome.
You also didn't read any of that. Prove me wrong? Restore my faith in humanity, as right now, it's at rock bottom. That's what happens when you spend 50 years trying to talk sense into people.
@@SupraSmart68 well I have never read such a crock of crap, you are the one that has no respect, and you claim to be the superior intellectual, instead of waffling on making no sense at all ,get to the point of your thinking ,you have never met me you don't know what I look like or anything so please keep you misguided opinion to yourself, and go learn some respect and manners ,you would be better off spending your time in this endeavour and it may make you a better human being, in the process, you are a classic specimen of the problem of todays society, sad really ,that we have to put up with sad ignorant people in the world like you,👎

@@ItaliaAutos Could you tell more specifically from what model year onward they are improved? Thank you.

I agree, I had an Audi which preferred the garage more than the road and a family member was left bankrupt by their mini £3500 within 6 months of ownership.
Too many problems.
grigorio allegri nope, not even once (in mine)

Model 2011 automatic 2.0 diesel 170, never got any problems, driving it every days, just make the maintenance at time ! Great accelerations.
I love how the battery strap is exactly the same as the one on my 20 year old 146!
Hi can you explained it , thx
Also some other things to look out for from my QV : 1) The fuel flap tends to get stuck with age 2) The gear knob cover came loose after 50,000Kms on mine 3) The Air condtitioning sensor was playing up after 50,000kms also was replaced. Cost $100. Otherwise the car was fine no other major problems and quite happy with it.
good stuff glad your happy.
The temp sensor has gone on mine and had too get the wing mirror replaced which ain't cheap, mind you its the only issue I've ever had but an annoying one
Giulietta and MITo are still incredibly beautiful cars.
I agree but the interior (especially the leather seats) are not as good a quality as the 147's
@@musmuk5350 yeah, interiors have space for improvement :)
