I can't imagine EVH ever settling for something like that... but it sure would have made KISS a lot more relevant. (and I say that as someone that does appreciate KISS but can't stand Gene).
Gene has told the same story mul times. Kiss was sick of Vinnie Vincent and Eddie was sick of DLR who just happened to be writing their hit songs. Eddie changed the game but there is a reason they only had commercial success with DLR and Hagar.

This man changed the culture of Rock&Roll in 78. With disco and punk ruling the charts VanHalen broke it wide open and never looked back! He has a special place in my heart. Will always feel we saw a miracle in music like Mozart was in his day so Edward VanHalen was in our day. There will never be another who changed music for ever! RIP brother may your music live forever!!
I call bullshit on that story. No way Eddie would walk away from his successful multi-platinum band where he calls the shots to become a low paid hired gun for KISS.
Eddie was asked about this and said it never happened. He wasn't happy with Roth, but he never wanted to join kiss. It's Gene...take EVERYTHING he says with a huge grain of salt. www.vhnd.com/2014/03/14/eddie-responds-to-kiss-rumor/
“He said... but”. The “but” is where contrarianism loses traction. Sure you have to take things Gene Simmons says with a grain of salt, but the same is true of Eddie, who is well known to have stretched the truth or outright lie on multiple occasions over the decades. In this case, I’m betting he conveniently “forgot” those conversations, since with hindsight it seems like a ridiculous idea (keep in mind one constant - EVH has always been _extremely_ protective of his reputation). Same goes for him asking Patty Smyth to join the band - he tried to keep that swept under the rug for years. Another known quantity is his frustration of dealing with bandmates, record labels, management, and all the other bullshit that goes with the business end of the music biz. We saw this repeatedly over the years with him wanting to do a solo record with guest artists after Roth left, building 5150, dumping Ted Templeman, hiring Mike Post, etc etc. IMO those conversations about possibly joining KISS _did_ happen, even if it wasn’t an outright invite or declaration that he’d quit his namesake band.
I’m 52. In 1978 my life changed. My best friend and I used to do air concerts at his house with the stereo cranked with his big brother’s vinyl albums; Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, Foghat, Nazareth......some of you here did the same stuff back then. Anyway, his brother suddenly had a new album with this freakin awesome looking dude, bent waaaaaay back with his hair touching the floor. And on the other side were these four photos that seemed as though they were literally on fire. You could barely make out the drummer, but he looked so badass. And the guy with the black and white striped guitar was the coolest image of a human being I’d ever seen. It was captivating to just stare at. Then we put the record on. We heard a loud car horn that seemed to be blaring in slow motion. Then a booming bass followed by a successive plinking sound......then all hell came through the floor and there was this impossibly perfect sounding guitar, with its B and G strings in perfect double-stop intonation that was majestic in a way and for reasons which i couldn’t articulate at the time, because I was only ten, and although I’d no idea yet, my journey to be an awesome rock guitarist began right then, right there. Oh but then, then the track finished, and the second one started. “”””””"””””””””””””””” What in the absolute fuck was that?!!! What did we just hear?’ I, I couldn’t believe what we heard. We played it over, and again, and again.....again. What the hell is going on? What is that? It Was AMAZING!!!!!!!.......... Eruption. My buddy and I must’ve said that word a million times each that day. WOW.......and then the world blew up. And Rock was reborn. Nothing was going to be the same. Edward Van Halen had blew up the world. And when the pieces landed back down, the world belonged to Van Halen. Say it....Van Halen. Awesome. Legendary. Eternal.........................
I feel so bad for Wolf. He’s taking it so hard. He shares all these wonderful pics & vids of him & his Dad. RIP Eddie & peace & strength to Wolf during these difficult times 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
"At just 65 years old." It's not like he was 35. He smoked like a chimney since the age of 12 & had throat & mouth cancer for over a decade. How is anyone surprised? Still....one of the greatest axemen to ever walk on two feet.
We're all dying, it's a matter of how and when not if. You'd think EVH was Jesus Christ or something. Not to take away from his death, but he was, as you say, not exactly young and with cancer.
xBowster I absolutely care. Like many, I grew up with EVH & saw VH live twice. It’s a real blow for the rock world that he has passed. I’m just pointing at that statement “At just 65 years old”. That’s not really all that young & with his history, not all that surprising. Be easy 🤙🏻
@countrygirl countrymusiclover1127 - that 14 min. guitar solo is Eruption (most likely)- released in 1978 when I was 18 and I was instantly hooked. He has remained my all-time favorite. All this is too much for a lot of us. I still can't believe it. Eddie influenced me on playing back in the days. I started playing in 1989. 5150 & OU812, got me by the heart, and I was addicted right away. I carried a Walkman back then. And also carried my cassette tapes with me everywhere. I couldn't hear them enough. Eddie gave me hopes for becoming a good guitar player. A reason to continue my life journey. I was going through a lot then at the age of 15. My friend Chris Haynes played like him. And we became best friends for life. He was my brother. And he passed away about 3 yrs ago. My heart is broken 💔. Thank you Eddie for all you did in music. It really meant something to me. Peace to your family and your friends. And to all of your fans. We love you man.

The first time I heard the "Beat It" solo I thought, Damn those Jackson boys have been practicing! For some reason I thought it was The Jackson 5. Oops.

“He tried to join KISS because he wasn’t getting along with one of his band mates” Total BULL... First of all Gene had wanted Eddie to join Kiss but Eddie wanted nothing but his own band with his brother. Secondly, if Eddie wasn't getting along with anyone in his band, Eddie would kick him out, cause it was Eddie and Alex's band..
In Gene’s book he says they discussed Eddie joining Kiss but realized it wouldn’t work. How could you bring an established “name” into Kiss and put him in makeup? What would his character be? I think any talk of Eddie joining Kiss was just pissed off drunk talk
Warning, hateful comment ahead: I'm glad the Osbournes couldn't abuse and/or shortchange Eddie Van Halen as they did to other musicians such as Jake E. Lee and Ruddy Sarzo.
@@mikej9089 Many people reach their 90s, and they keep both agile and lucid. I'm aware Eddie Van Halen was fit, had strong abs, etc, although I don't know whether he did hard drugs in his early career or took "energizing" supplements or it was a combination of genetics and bad "luck".

Can't help but feel sorry for his wife, Janie. Valerie is not his wife. Great that they remained close friends, but... Janie was with him to the end. It must hurt to see nothing but Eddie and Valerie everytime she sees a story.
Lina J I agree, Valerie gave him the greatest gift of all, their son Wolfie, that is a bond that could never be broken, he carries his fathers legacy. Janie would be silly to give media free rent in her headspace, she knows how much she meant to Eddie and they shared a strong love right up until his end, she can hold onto that forever. I’m sure she and Valerie have a mutual understanding in that respect.
I agree. Not taking away from Valerie and Wolfie, but Janie was married to Eddie for over 11 years. I would be crushed that she was not mentioned very much. Double hurt to lose her husband but then to not hardly be acknowledged. Not cool!!!
When I saw the tweet that Wolfy put out about his dad the Legend Edward Vanhalen I dropped to my knees and burst into tears I still feel like this is a dream because I just can't or don't want to believe it but you know what they say " only the good die young" and Eddie you will be missed I love you Eddie thanks for the music you shared with the whole world thank you. One of your biggest fans Steve Gwinnutt.
Took me a few listens! Then one day I said 'That sounds like Ed's style!' Then I found out for sure! I was ELATED because here I am a Black man hearing the great EVH on an R & B station!!!
Van Halen was the sound track of my youth. I was 16 in 1985 and if you opened my cassette case you would have found every VH album in order of release. I saw them on the 1984 tour in Raleigh NC. My first concert of my life. It was from that point I became a guitar player. Of course I painted it like Eddies Frankenstrat and every lick I would learn would be a “mini concert “ to my family. “Look what I can play!!!” And my mom would congratulate me even though she had no clue she just heard an EVH lick from a VH song. That man had more influence over me than anybody other that my own parents.
A lot of icons have passed the last five to ten years, but none have shocked me as much as Eddie's death. I thought about it multiple times an hour since and I just cannot believe he is gone. So much was lost forever.
RIP legend. Part of the soundtrack of my youth growing up, even though I was a 90s kid and didn't care for that kind of music at the time. My dad listened to van Halen non stop so I know every single song ever. Now in my 40s, I always tell my boys what a great band VH was and they Don't make music like that anymore. You will be missed by the entire planet.
I must've been absent or just wasn't paying attention to the fact that EVH played the solo in Michael Jackson's song "Beat It!" I just heard that this morning and am blown away by the fact that he asked for no money and no credit for his contribution. He's easily on my top 5 guitar players of all time list! He left behind a lot of great music that defined a generation! Thank you Eddie!
Been a fan from the beginning. Was lucky enough to see the band 5 time before DLR's departure. The concerts were always exciting events and awesome and memorable. RIP my friend.
I hated Eddie all throughout the 1980's because he was "too good" of a guitar player !! - but that didn't last long - his smile personified a down to earth person who did not have any ego

I watched your video. You're really good! You should post more videos. May I post a link to your channel on my IG page to try and get you more subs? Take care
@Subway bruh why would I be shouting out my channel when I have one vid and wasn’t planning to make more? It was just showing how everyone from Ozzy abs Gene to random bass player on the internet who doesn’t even play rock or metal are all acting as one over this tragedy
@@ukmedicfrcs hey thanks a lot man! I guess I might do some more vids, since I’ve received pretty good feedback. Although I might wait a bit so it doesn’t seem like I’m trying to use EVHs death to kickstart my channel
And yeah I don’t care if you link it go ahead
The year will be 2055 and we will miss him just as much on his would be 100th Birthday, and 100 years after that. That’s what legends leave on this earth! Pure gold.
Its difficult to express the true greatness of Eddie Van Halen.
Life is fleeting but in his time he brought the world something that hadn't existed, its extremely unlikely it ever will again.
Thank you Eddie, RIP
He wasn't uncredited for the solo on Beat It. That album was released in 1982 and I remember seeing his name credited as guitarist on that sing in the liner notes. He wasn't paid for the session because he opted to do it for free.
Wouldn’t that have been awesome to hear Eddie fill in for Ace during his leave! Momentarily that is.
We are gonna miss Eddie. Thank you ET for doing a nice job with this segment and showing just how gifted Eddie was. RIP EVH
You will forever be remembered RIP EVH 💔
This man will never die he's left us so much .. RIP Eddie prayers for the family. Damn loved to hear him play
God bless Wolfie, Alex, Valerie and all who are mourning. 2020 is the year from HELL!
I certainly agree
who's next? I will lose my shit if Neil Young dies.
Jim Davis Well put Jim, this year 2020 is pure hell for me. My Mom is dying and in palliative care for last few weeks. The covid-19, isolation, and now seeing my loved one dying, is more than I can cope. This has to be the year from HELL !
@@reedeaton8994
So sorry Reed. Yes Dad in nursing home with pancreatic cancer and can not go in because of covid. Can only see him laying in bed through the window and talk to him on the phone. Then all this political stuff and riots etc. It is wearing my brain out. GOD BLESS.
You got that right!
Born in 73 my 1st 3 musical influences were John Cougar Mellencamp, Billy Joel, & Van Halen. Eddie was the greatest to me. Rock in Peace, Eddie. You are missed.
He would never leave his brother for KISS. I’m leery of that statement.
I can't imagine EVH ever settling for something like that... but it sure would have made KISS a lot more relevant. (and I say that as someone that does appreciate KISS but can't stand Gene).
Story I heard was the exact opposite... that Gene tried to get him to replace Ace... and eventually, Eddie said "no".
Who knows?
d0nKsTaH That’s right, now that I think about it.
Gene has told the same story mul times. Kiss was sick of Vinnie Vincent and Eddie was sick of DLR who just happened to be writing their hit songs. Eddie changed the game but there is a reason they only had commercial success with DLR and Hagar.
Gene is full of crap, this is coming from a member of the kiss army
My parents were hard core country fans and basically I was also till one day in junior high school I heard a Van Halen tune. That was it I bought the 8 track Van Halen 1 and listened to it constantly .8 tracks played over and over.that was 1978 I was 13 now I'm 55 a truck driver and still listen. R.I.P.Eddie !
RIP eddie van halen i will alwaya lisen to your music thank you for all the wonderful songs my heart goes to your family godd bless you
I was 12 yrs old in 1984 when 1984 came out. When some kids were writing KISS , OZZY & pentagrams with Motley Crue on picnic benches. I was tagging lockers & my book covers with the winged VH .. “ I say Rock On , Hey Rock On” Eddie Van Halen .As for this 2020 , “Where have all the good times gone?’
"The saddest part of life is when the person who gave you the best memories becomes a memory" THANK YOU
I was literally giving my whole art class a speech on who Eddie Van Halen is and how Ive been obsessed with him and VH (w/ DLR) ever since I was 8. And thats when I got the news alert and started bawling in front of the class. Everyone was confused and my art teacher (Shout out to Mrs. Coro) said no effing way. We couldnt believe it. I spent that night driving and blasting his instrumentals, music, and interviews and just about ate my weight in ice cream. I dont think ive ever cried that hard. And my close friends keep spamming me saying sorry for your loss. I fucking love that god. Rest In PEACE EDWARD LUDEWIJK VAN HALEN. You will be missed. Im still waiting for someone to tell me this is a fucking sick joke or for him to pull a Nikki Sixx. I love you man, rock the hell out of heaven.....
I So Agree!
“He tried to join KISS because he wasn’t getting along with one of his band mates”
*cough*ROTH*cough*
I call bullshit on that story. No way Eddie would walk away from his successful multi-platinum band where he calls the shots to become a low paid hired gun for KISS.
@@Fireglo You’d be wrong, because it actually happened.
Total Crap! It's just Simmons wishing he had joined KISS...Frehley was out at this time and The elder album had flopped! Kiss needed a hype boost!
“He said...
“”””””"”””””””””””””””
What in the absolute fuck was that?!!! What did we just hear?’ I, I couldn’t believe what we heard. We played it over, and again, and again.....again.
What the hell is going on? What is that?
It
Was
AMAZING!!!!!!!..........
We are going to feel this way when ozzy and gene leave us.......our HERO'S WILL DIE....BUT NEVER GO AWAY.

"At just 65 years old." It's not like he was 35. He smoked like a chimney since the age of 12 & had throat & mouth cancer for over a decade. How is anyone surprised? Still....one of the greatest axemen to ever walk on two feet.
You just dont care that he died do ya
We're all dying, it's a matter of how and when not if. You'd think EVH was Jesus Christ or something. Not to take away from his death, but he was, as you say, not exactly young and with cancer.
and his share of pot and crack cocaine
xBowster I absolutely care. Like many, I grew up with EVH & saw VH live twice. It’s a real blow for the rock world that he has passed. I’m just pointing at that statement “At just 65 years old”. That’s not really all that young & with his history, not all that surprising. Be easy 🤙🏻
@@Tackz777 true i guess I was just being a smart ass 😂
Their first Album was amazing and stands on its own as the Album that change Rock guitar forever.
I remember Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, they wanted to play like Eddie Van Halen. 🌈🌈🙌
@countrygirl countrymusiclover1127 - that 14 min. guitar solo is Eruption (most likely)- released in 1978 when I was 18 and I was instantly hooked. He has remained my all-time favorite. I always like to give credit where it's due and I hear Paisley is very talented at what he does, but there is no "country Van Halen". There just isn't. Doesn't matter, though. Without music life would be a mistake. Enjoy whatever blows your skirt up!
Fast Times @ Ridgemont High also has a VanHalen reference!
They wanted him in the band because they couldn't play well but they needed a killer video to get him on board but they couldn't make a killer video of they couldn't play and because they couldn't play they should be van Halen in, beautiful beautiful beautiful film
That's so sad. My prayers go out to his family😢
Rest In Peace Eddie, no fingers in the world will ever move quite as quickly around the neck of a guitar as yours did, thank you for all of the memories. Unfortunately now it is time for you to go play that big guitar in the sky, and if what you did here is big: you will definitely rock even bigger there. We will miss you, and we will see you again one day!

“At first I said “No, no. No. You’re not going on tour with your father.” I almost died laughing. What a loss, though.

Is unbelievable his legacy! Hard to say goodbye to the greatest Eddie Van Halen!! He as a virtuoso changed everything in terms of creativity!! God!!😭 The greatest!!
Its funny the first time I heard "Beat It" from Micheal Jackson, I instantly knew It was Eddie and all my friends did too. You're not a true fan in you could not recognize Eddies playing, he needed no credits to tell me that was him. RIP Eddie thank you for the memories and the music.
EVH forever. ET get stuff wrong all the time he was credited on Beat It. I bought thriller the day it came out and in liner notes it said Eddie Van Halen guitar solo. But he didn't take any money it was just a favor. God still can't believe it. I wish i had got to see him live.
The first time I heard the "Beat It" solo I thought, Damn those Jackson boys have been practicing! For some reason I thought it was The Jackson 5. Oops.
Agreed. When Beat It came out I said to my classmates " That's Eddie". They said that it wasn't. This argument went on for awhile until it was confirmed. You just knew. He had his own sound.
@@rikmuao4699 Thank you and you're absolutely correct no one sounded like Eddie no one. Believe me I have tried and failed miserably lol but I'm nowhere near alone on that.

“He tried to join KISS because he wasn’t getting along with one of his band mates”
Total BULL... First of all Gene had wanted Eddie to join Kiss but Eddie wanted nothing but his own band with his brother.
Secondly, if Eddie wasn't getting along with anyone in his band, Eddie would kick him out, cause it was Eddie and Alex's band..
MegaDaveNichols I guess you were there.
In Gene’s book he says they discussed Eddie joining Kiss but realized it wouldn’t work. How could you bring an established “name” into Kiss and put him in makeup? What would his character be? I think any talk of Eddie joining Kiss was just pissed off drunk talk
OCTOBER 6TH IS NOW EVH DAY! Eddie will NEVER be forgotten!
Warning, hateful comment ahead: I'm glad the Osbournes couldn't abuse and/or shortchange Eddie Van Halen as they did to other musicians such as Jake E. Lee and Ruddy Sarzo.
Do you think You will even make to be his age?
@@mikej9089 Many people reach their 90s, and they keep both agile and lucid. I'm aware Eddie Van Halen was fit, had strong abs, etc, although I don't know whether he did hard drugs in his early career or took "energizing" supplements or it was a combination of genetics and bad "luck".

Can't help but feel sorry for his wife, Janie. Valerie is not his wife. Great that they remained close friends, but... Janie was with him to the end. It must hurt to see nothing but Eddie and Valerie everytime she sees a story.
, p xd lf4
I get that but Valerie is the mother of his son. But i do hope Janie will be ok😟
Janie's crying. too soon?
I agree. Not taking away from Valerie and Wolfie, but Janie was married to Eddie for over 11 years. I would be crushed that she was not mentioned very much. Double hurt to lose her husband but then to not hardly be acknowledged. Not cool!!!
Cannot believe it's already 3 years he's been gone.
The Entertainment Host (whatever his name is) said he spoke to KISS’ “front man “ Gene 1:32 . The guy don’t even know who who is talking to.
I knew it was Eddie on “Beat It” after the first not. Could not mistake his great sound!
Took me a few listens! Then one day I said 'That sounds like Ed's style!' Then I found out for sure! I was ELATED because here I am a Black man hearing the great EVH on an R & B station!!!
I can't believe some people didn't know it was him. It was obviously him.
we can reconize his style and sound

ROCK IN PEACE EDDIE. TY FOR YOUR MUSIC.
Rest In Peace, Eddie...!!!! Heaven's Got A Kick-Ass Guitarist Now...!!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
A lot of icons have passed the last five to ten years, but none have shocked me as much as Eddie's death. I thought about it multiple times an hour since and I just cannot believe he is gone. So much was lost forever.
The Eddie Van Halen trying to join KISS thing is FACT. He wanted to join after ace frehley departed KISS.
Gene wanted him to join!
Spiritualistic that’s what he wanted apparently

I hated Eddie all throughout the 1980's because he was "too good" of a guitar player !! - but that didn't last long - his smile personified a down to earth person who did not have any ego

When i want to hear Ozzy's take on something....do I always have to hear Sharon's shrew voice too???
Of course! Ozzy can't wipe his own rear end without Sharon getting involved
Ozzy has to pay Sharon a Royalty Fee every time he opens his mouth!
Someone always has to be with Ozzy to interpret what he babbles.
