Posted this on Second Disc originally but despite having a high click through and watch time, youtube wasn't recommending it. So I'm giving it a second chance on the main channel.
I make slop, it's called my attempts at making myself a meal. But the pickle sandwich is the best thing i made with my brief experimentation in the kitchen.
Thank you for sharing with us your feelings on everything. I'm glad you stepped away from original species and started working on something you actually enjoy!
I can say that I'm happy you like what you're making now, because it definitely shows. The tamagotchi video was good enough to make me look at your channel and see what else would be interesting to watch, and your Wii draw tablet documentary is what made me subscribe because it was really well put together, and the research comes through Sometimes it is unavoidable to use gaming footage in the background if you're a gaming channel and there's not really a lot of footage that can represent what you're talking about. Like, there's just so much relevant footage you can put on a video about your existential crisis over the quality of your content X3 As you said, your past content was a medium for you to learn the skills to make great content, and now you're putting those skills to good use I'd say. Let's just hope YT keeps spreading it so people can discover the new not-slop you
slop is indeed a thing. but at same time many words are thrown around by people to describe "things i don't like" i beleive the only true slop are the actual "brainrot" content farms
Yeah this is kind of what I was thinking, you gotta be careful to not conflate the actual definition of things like “Slop” or “Brainrot” with “Thing I don’t personally like” because some people will just do that.

I still love your original species videos as they are very well made, informative and entertaining. 🤩🤩 I think making videos on creators like vaush are important, because I have never heard of them before, the more people know about creators like that the better, as they know who to steer clear of and what original species to stay clear of and why. I LOVE the Space hamster version of your sona it is adorable as is the little spaceship she is in. 🤩🤩😍😍
Heyo, I've been watching your channel for a while and I don't think you make slop. What I consider slop is like you said thrown together news articals/drama, because it's quickly shipped out the second the drama is put out there. Also a lot of videos is the same topic and opinions. Me personally I do struggle with my own work, I make music and struggling to make it because the biggest one is wanting it to be perfect and how am I gonna get paid for it. I think you're doing the best you can and I think it's good to see if you're happy with what you're making which I think is more than important than making something for the sack of it.
I mean, even if your old content was considered “slop”, I still just like your content, both what you did before, and what you do now! :D …I just feel bad that I don’t watch it often because I don’t always have the time to, so I’m sorry about that :T (Also imma be honest when I first saw this I thought you were saying “do you make slop” as in “should you make slop” and I was thinking about that guy talking about the Bucket of Wet Slop, so I just at first thought “sure? If you really wanna make a whole bucket of that, then go ahead?” And then I realized and was like “wait no-“ XD)
Slop makes it sound so much worse. It's still content. And though it may not have felt like the art you want to create it still serves a purpose beyond filling space.
It's wonderful to create and save the things you're proud of even if they don't 'pay the bills'. I agree with that fully. I only found your channel this year and I'm not sure which one drew me in. It was likely an original species video that's deleted now so I can't check. Other than that it could have been your bad sponsor callout from 3 months ago. I think another thing that lowers a video to slop is a lack of personality. Jacksfilms recent react bingo series shows a lot of what is basically plagiarism and slop in that genre. Being transformative is key and the videos I remember seemed pretty good about that. In my opinion having a personal insight or experience with a closed species would be enough to really make a video your own. I hope you still keep personal recordings of videos you didn't like if just for the good bits. Or hey I guess if anything is truly bothersome discard it! You've got a fun channel, well researched vids, a lovely voice, and I've liked all the videos I've watched so far. Keep doin what makes you happy! ❤
10:40 I agree. My metric to define good Art is just something that a artist expression that invocates thoughts and feelings on the audience. Off course, to me the more the art gets one asking about the substance of something or having complex feelings or even learning something or aspiring to something the better. Cannot be just hate bait (albeit it can be considered a form of art) On the subject of the original species video... well there is value to have a catalogue of species without just stumbling into them by accident. Albeit one can also find fun into just discovery by accident. Anyway, if you ever thought about doing it again, I guess a investigative approach is better, instead of doing a summary with your own words. Asking people, reading up on the history, the artist that are know for doing art or writing about, the communities, amongst other things.
so, wanting an in-depth look at something you are, yourself, very interested in, explained by a pov of another person is "slop"? that's what i get from it at least, and i am not sure if i agree. school-subjects like history class might define slop in that case, if i am not wrong or too short-sighted with my opinion. maybe i just don't know better :) but i enjoy your stuff ever since i found you. thank you
I think slop is mostly referring to stuff like what Penguinz0, Tom Dark, Pyrocynical, and Illuminaughti does. Where they post videos about subjects they know nothing about or post nothing but stream clips. You know, drama videos that aren't researched much that show up the day of the controversy, news videos before the facts are out, stuff like that.
I think your definition of slop is missing a key defining feature: No value, nothing new gained, no new information (or the information is misleading), no enjoyment that'll stick with you, treating viewers like a herd of animals to feed and that's it. Also they tend to be of REALLY fast paced to always keep you enganged and not let you think. If it's slow, it's probably not slop. It does its best to hold your attention without offering anything of _value._ THAT'S what i consider slop. Usually, this sort of content is directed at younger audiences, but it can also be directed at older demographics. It is MUCH more prevalent to children, though. Mr Beast is a clear example of slop to me, but it wouldn't fit under _your_ definition of slop. There's nothing low quality of the way he produces his stuff, and yet, it... gives NOTHING and it's so fast it doesnt let you sit with it. Your videos don't fit that definition I'm proposing. Not at all. At least, from what I've seen. I've never heard the definition you used. Maybe I'm just heavily misunderstanding that term, but I've always understood it that way. I do understand you wanting to move away from that sort of content and not being proud of it, but that doesnt necessarily mean it's slop. People got something out of them. I know I have. Slop, however, leaves you with nothing. And gameplay as background is DEFINITELY not indicative of slop. At ALL. Neither is being unscripted or not perfect editing. Else, new youtubers who are getting a hang of stuff would always be considered slop, and that's not fair.
Nope, the older stuff is being moved to www.youtube.com/@serasthings2 since I don't make that kind of stuff anymore it might mislead new viewers into subscribing for something they wouldn't be getting anymore.

Yeah, just an hour in and it's doing better than the one I uploaded on Second Disc. RUclips was definitely keeping it off people's feeds.
@@seradisc2wait is this you, or is that you, is me you, or are you me, or am I Mii.
Yes I figured it out, I am Mii.

Here is a creative idea, make a slop iceberg, but its just really an 8 hour video about the word 'slop' and things that are called 'slop'.
AND THE WORMS ON A STRING THE SQUIRMLEZ wow actual blast but fr take care out there Sera

What a blast i remmeber the birdo vid being my intro to ur channel and im happy this serves as a sort of outlet for your thoughts on content integrity

I'm in the process of moving over the species videos to www.youtube.com/@serasthings2 So they won't stay privated for long.
