If you are serious about sticking with it, I'd recommend cycle shoes. You will have more control and they snap into the peddles.

@MaryKBella no specific brand, but I would recommend going to a cycle store to purchase them. They will fit you specifically to the correct size (the ones online fit slightly different than your normal shoe size). Plus there is an attachment that goes on the bottom and it's best for them to find the placement of where it should go. If you screw it in too high or too low, it will be a mess on your knees...I learned the hard way🤣. But after I went to the store, I was good to go.
