Halifax Class Modernization/Frigate Life Extension Project Part 2

  • Part II of the HCM/FELEX documentary continues the story of the five-year long project to bring 20th Century frigates into the 21st Century by revivifying the heart of their combat systems and sensors. While Part I shown them being taken apart and put back together, Part II concentrates on the new suite of capabilities installed into the ships. It examines each “piece of kit” separately and in detail, outlining exactly (if briefly) what each component is designed to do - including their balanced defensive and offensive weapons suite, illustrated through real-world sea-training sequences shot in the Operations Room. It’s not exactly “Canadian Frigates For Dummies;” more a drink from a fire-hose, an audio-visual smoothie chock-full of sound and vision info for tech-heads, naval enthusiasts, defence journalists, professional industry-types and - last but not least - the Canadian taxpayer, in whose service the ships sail in defence of our interests anywhere, throughout the maritime world.

    My husband was in the navy on HMCS TERRA NIVAL and HMCS TERRA and HMCS Q'UAPELLE in 80's and the government did the same thing and they started building th new frigates in the middle 90's. It took them years to build them and now they did a long time major refit so it will take ar least 5 to 10 years before you see the new ships. They like to wait until everything falls apart

      I just read that they thought he leaked sensitive information to the media and to a ship building company to try and get a contract for the navy or something like that,it didn't say whether he was found guilty/not guilty but I'm assuming that he was found not guilty because he said he'd wish to return to the forces but made a deal with the CAF to retire instead. But from what I read sounds horrible that something like that could happen

      @@USSAnimeNCC- - 15 hulls...but at a build rate of one every 18 months (assuming no delays), the last of the class will not be the same ship as the first of the class. Building over 22.5 years is nuts...they'll be radically modified or they will be completely obsolete, or both. Procurement in CA is just so screwed up. How about building a real Navy? Subs anyone? No, we'll not discuss the useless Upholder/Victoria class boats from 1980s technology, of which only one is in service at any one time...and just look how long it took to get new helos with less capability that the Merlins.

      @watcher63034 3 года назад

      @@doogleticker5183 Building over time is better than all at once. It allows changes to be made before the ship is even started. The ships may be very different from one another (or not) but technology changes real fast. Look at the new fighter jets. Pick any fighter jet for Canada, and tell me that a certain aircraft will remain viable and capable for up to 40 years (first CF18 was in 1982). Nothing will fly for that long and be relevant BUT, if you could buy, say F18 E/F with a few growlers from that same company towards the end of your procurement, that would be a huge beneft. Or maybe if that company allowed you to buy a different model of aircraft (F35?) halfway through, then that would be far better.
      Buying 100 fighter jets and hoping them to last 40 years is dumb. Buying 25 fighters every decade makes more sense. See what I mean about the frigates now?

    • @doogleticker5183
      @doogleticker5183 3 года назад

      @@watcher63034 - I agree. It is just the RATE of bringing new kit online is a political trick...we hear 15 frigates to replace the 12 CPF frigates...wow, sounds good...over 25 years...
      I'm ex-Navy and from my perspective, a new ship every 18 months is ridiculously slow...that adds up to a much smaller RCN ready for active service at any one time. The Halifax class CPFs (12 hulls) were built much quicker, commissioned from June 1992 to September 1996 (a bit more than 4 years) because the Navy was down to zero destroyers and a smattering of other obsolete ships that added up to next to having a no combat capable Navy.
      So 12 frigates were designed and built for ASW and limited other combat tasks. A fleet of 12 ships means 4 ships ready for combat while the others are cycled through maintenance, upgrades, basic sea readiness training, and combat workups...on a shoestring budget.
      The RCN will now be operating a much more complicated rotation, it will cost more, you can foresee the last few ships never being built, and fewer ships will be operational at any one time.
      I like your reasoning regarding fighter jet acquisition, but it isn't the same situation and doesn't apply to ship acquisitions.
      There are much better models regarding maintaining a decent-sized, modern fighting navy. The RN does it better and never stops building ships at a rate that keeps it a viable, lethal force. The RCN is suffering from paralysis brought on by extremely severe underfunding.
      The RCN's top brass is ignored by politicians and Canada is sadly being run by amateurs despite the fact that there are clearly competent civil servants at DND, plus experienced senior RCN and ex-RCN personnel.
      The bottom line is that Canada cannot even start to defend itself or meet its international obligations. The RCN doesn't even have a Navy replenishment ship (AOR). Canadians, sadly, think peace is forever, but the world is rearming as we enter a fragile second Cold War.

    Nice SLEP program (service life extension program) It looks like it will bring these ships up to modern warfare standards. I would think that an Infrared detection system would help as everything appears to be radar. I don't know far advanced ship IR systems are but with stealth aircraft such a system should prove useful as every aircraft creates air friction heat on parts of their skin. I would like the Canadian navy to invest into about 6 to 8 AIP submarines and then dump the air breathing Victoria s.
