I worked as part of the team that built the Harry DeWolfe, from before the first piece of steel was cut, to the day we handed her over to the RCN. A lot of hard work, stress, extra hours, good times and tough times. To see her out in the north with such a strong crew, conducting a multitude of tasks makes me very proud. Fair winds and following seas Harry.
Glad you built such a high quality ship. Hopefully Erving builds a bigger shipyard so they can build bigger support carrier sized flat topped arctic support ships. It's the only intermediate form of infrastructure Canada can have until more permanent infrastructure and settlements are built. Canada is not equipped to handle a major emergency like an airliner crash or leaking oil tanker
That was one of the best short docs from the CAF I have ever seen. Well produced, great visuals, and engaging people talking passionately about a big stride for the Royal Canadian Navy. Returning to OUR arctic is incredibly important for the country, not just from a security standpoint, but a human standpoint. It connects us to our fellow citizens who live in this amazing, and isolated part of our country. Bravo Zulu!
This beautiful country is our to protect and love. The Captain is right, as Canadian, we need to do more, a lot more, for the Arctic people and our 3 oceans.
It's been a long time coming and it's amazing that we can finally return to the Arctic with the RCN. Wonderful footage and a much longer video than normal. Franklin and his crew have been waiting a long time. BZ.
Today, while vacationing with my family at Barcelo Maya Colonial in Mexico, I looked offshore and saw what I instantly recognized as the outline of an AOPV vessel. I went to confirm her presence on an internet vessel tracking site to confirm that it was indeed HMCS HARRY DEWOLF a few kilometres off shore between the Yucatan peninsula and Cozumel. What a surprise to me that I traveled all the way to Mexico for my first sighting of this amazing class of ships. I don't know where she was going or what her mission was but I wish the ship and her crew fair winds and following seas! Hopefully, sometime in the next few years, I will get to board her on a Great Lakes Tour.

Thanks. BTW, the Royal Navy is the British navy. Ours is the Royal Canadian Navy. It may or may not be true but we at least like to think that we're an independent country.
So amazing a voyage into the North. Look at the expanse, 3 oceans and the scenic beauty the voyage unfolds of our own Arctic. Thanks so much for venturing into the fantastic North and letting us see the wonders out there. Also must renew our desire, our energy and spirit for significant support to the communities there. Build them strong as they represent Canada. Belong together always ❤️.
What a great post. Please post more of these. Canadian military needs to promote more of what they do. Shed light on what you do and you will gain more Canadian support. Well done.
A number of people here are complaining these ships cannot fight a war. The class's name says it all. They are offshore patrol ships and no navy in the world would use these type of ships for high intensity warfare. They're meant for sovereign and law enforcement patrols in the artic and elsewhere for which they are well suited. I don't understand why commentators here want to arm ice breakers for serious ASW or ASuW as you'd be using a hull form not optimized for it nor is it necessary. Even the US Navy doesn't do it. I do think these ships need a bigger gun though and I wouldn't be surprised to see them retrofitted with the Halifax class's 57mm gun when they're retired. For serious surface warfare, the navy is getting what it needs in the CSC which will be one of the most heavily armed frigates in the world.
Yep, most Navies operate lightly armed patrol ships in addition to major surface combatants. They fill a role. However, it would probably be beneficial if they had more defensive weapons, such as a CIWS
In my Optinion, this ship should have a 57mm gun and a RAM Launcher as CIWS. But I guess the current armament is enough, if Canada gets its 15 Type 26 frigates
The issue I have is there is so few personnel in the Navy that crewing non combat ships like this one leaves fewer personnel to crew actual combat capable ships, give this kind of ship to the Coast Guard
awesome docs and it about time we got back into CANADAS ARTIC and beyond. With that said its also long time coming to naval ship with icebreaker capabilities up in CANADAS ARCTIC and I hope we learn more about CANADAS ARTIC and northern areas of operation. To the crew of our AOPS VESSEL safe journey and awesome ship and ship crew a job well done
@Royal Canadian Navy - Im more interested in the Type 026 than this toothless boat. If the DeWolf class is meant to patrol the artic then it must be also designed to withstand Russian agression or any other nation that would be interested in the North. From an underpowered turret to having an early missile warning system with no ability to shoot down said missile, this boat leaves much to be desired and appears to be only used to ferry our military from point a to point b in the north to play public relations. Im sorry, fixing freezers in communities is not the work of the military - it's nice and all that, and a welcome side bonus to what the true function of a military is. I get you're all happy you finally got new boats after decades of neglect and are trying to sell that to us - real Canadians know you need new boats, new subs, new everything. Instead of propping up the DeWolf, you should be telling everyone that it's a glorified tugboat that isnt suited to truly defend our borders from hostile nations. Maybe then youll get some more funding... or boats that are actually useful. Im sorry, it's a nice boat but it is severely lacking.
An amazing video....well done. Gave us a good insight as to what and where they go and there mission. Very proud of my daughter’s accomplishments in her career. ❤️ Mom

Well after ww2 our navy was decimated by the unrestricted submarine warfare vis-a-vis german u-boats. We had the 3rd biggest fleet in the world for refrence
Why? we are not the UK navy. We still have traditions that we carried over. But we are our own nation and navy, we have our own traditions. We don't need tea and crumpets in our tanks...
@@OK-ws7ti I'm not sure if you are refering to the U-Boats that "decimated" the RCN. But incase anyone reading this comment thinks that. that is not what happened. Following WWII, ours like most nations (including the US and UK) had defence budget policy and legislation changes that greatly reduced the sizes/funding for their militaries. so we the RCN retired/scrapped/sold a large portion of our fleets (or returned the loaned vessels).
It should have a 25mm forward and another 25mm aft. Four .50 BMG in between, that can be operated from below icy decks, aimed-fired by day & by night. That should be augmented with two MANPADS launchers. Because you could utilize that EMPTY flight deck for something approaching useful. Then one can go on long patrol with peace of mind.
Most hunter-killer subs can't hunt hostile subs under the ice either. USN is still learning how to fire torpedos under the ice in 2022. It's a different war fighting environment when you have 150 feet of ice above your head.

HMCS Harry DeWolf is named after one of our own, Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf, the 8th Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy and Commander of Canada's fightingest ship, HMCS Haida. :)
The Royal Canadian Navy will have to continue relying on allies and a private firm to refuel its ships at sea after a project to build a new fleet of supply vessels was hit with more delays.

Warships are for war. The Navy needs those vessels. This boat aint there for any kind a serious fight. Smuggling in the Artic? Ice breakers in the Caribbean? Sounds like the Feds have turned the RCN into the twin of the Canadian Coast guard service. Maybe even into the dumber twin. These boats better be upgradable or they are a waste of money and will cost us lives if anything ever got serious in the North. The crews need more than the traditional blessing for safe travels. They need our prayers if they ever deploy to anything near a war zone.

@@chrisl.9845 Compared to the Russian patrol vessels that are under construction (and are to be armed with missles) the RCN variant is underarmed despite being the same size. Given that the Russians & now the Chinese are intruding into our Artic waters, ASW capabilities would have been useful.
@Roman Dacil V if you are referring to the 22160 project, their weapon systems are "proposed" they are not actually fitted with them. And the ship is actually a "miniature warship" it was never originally designed to be used for patrol. Russian class designators are extremely loose and do not follow the actual description. Again, they claim it is a patrol ship, it is not due to is weapon systems. A patrol vessel is not meant to be armed "to the teeth". And for your situational awareness, the Russian vessels that were given so much weaponry are basically useless. They constantly have power plant issues and cannot have multiple systems running at the same time. You do understand that "ASW and ASuW" are warfare, it's in the name "warfare" if naval battles are required, then noone will be using a patrol ship. When you are patrolling, you won't use an MLRS or a Tank, you'll use a patrol pathfinder with minimal gear to get the job done. The reason that Russian and Chinese put heavier weapons on their so-called patrol ships is because their actual warships are useless and falling apart. And now using patrolships in a warfare setting, these ships are useless and falling apart. Seeing the evidence of the constant and utter failure of Russian and Chinese ships firsthand, I know just because they look like they have more weapons, they can't use half of them, and the other half ls capabilities are diminished due to their horrendous construction and maintenance.
Canada's Navy and Coast Guard should be Merged into one IMO? Canada's Future unfortunately needs HEAVILY Armed(not that tiny little peashooter ugg...) Patrol Vessels in our Arctic, Not Unarmed icebreakers.

He wouldn't be scared of this boat in particular, but an attack on one of these ships is an attack on NATO. Just having a Navy ship able to patrol in the North makes a difference.
He was referring to the abysmal part the government of Canada played in forcibly moving whole communities of Inuit away from their traditional lands in order to populate land that had never held people in the past and where their normal food supplies barely existed. His empathy and emotions are appropriate for a caring human being when you consider how many people died due to their forced relocation.

Okay so I imagine this arctic ship to hunt a hostile submarine under the ice? Haha oh wait, no it can’t do that.
Most hunter-killer subs can't hunt hostile subs under the ice either. USN is still learning how to fire torpedos under the ice in 2022. It's a different war fighting environment when you have 150 feet of ice above your head.
There is a very different perspective on experienced and inexperienced in CAF and RCN as well as naval power projections and class designations. Ngl who names a ship Harry DeWolfe
HMCS Harry DeWolf is named after one of our own, Vice-Admiral Harry DeWolf, the 8th Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy and Commander of Canada's fightingest ship, HMCS Haida. :)
@@RCNMRC huh never knew that but now I know, thanks for telling me

The Royal Canadian Navy will have to continue relying on allies and a private firm to refuel its ships at sea after a project to build a new fleet of supply vessels was hit with more delays.
Very wrong
@ej d well people with no experience in the military have, so let's say no...
@ej d you are free to your opinion, no matter how naive, uneducated and childish it is. You must be salty be ause you kept getting rejected. Which is ok, being a quaker is just fine 🙂
@ej d you do realize I know your a scamming bot account. Not real and not educated. All you do is comment on military posts insulting them and insulting people. You have insulted genders, sexual orientations, vaccinations, amongst other things. You are nothing but a nothing, let's be honest, you're think you're "tacticool" and a part of the gravy-forces. Because you failed your life and jealous of those that had gotten into the CAF. Your sadness and hatred will get you exactly where you are in life... nowhere. You're hate will drive away everyone you try to love... unless you already did that. So be well, be happy, and quit acting tough and better than everyone that is truly better off than you, and make a positive change. But since I know exactly what you will be posting in the comments to this, I already won. You lost. Go back to hiding behind your fake account mate.

Yes, no military needs patrol unit.
The jazz music at 5:30 to 6:15 is comical.
As I suspected, this ship is going to be used as a glorified cargo ship for northern communities, pathetic.

Too lightly armed to deal with anything more serious than illegal fishing or poaching. No ASW or SAM capabilities.
Its a patrol ship - the surface combat will be handled by the the future CSC and it will be armed to the teeth.

I have no problem with Bull Shit, but you should do it on your own dime.
Ditto...
Would our increasingly hostile Northern neighbours fire on a unarmed ship❓
Canada's Navy and Coast Guard should be Merged into one IMO? Canada's Future unfortunately needs HEAVILY Armed(not that tiny little peashooter ugg...) Patrol Vessels in our Arctic, Not Unarmed icebreakers.

Why do think we don't have "Battleships", "Dreadnaughts" or 16" guns anymore?
Putin shaking in his boots rn lol
Yup, let’s add some negativity. Why not, eh?
He wouldn't be scared of this boat in particular, but an attack on one of these ships is an attack on NATO. Just having a Navy ship able to patrol in the North makes a difference.
He is, as he is losing his war
This is so weak. They actually are proud to have a sailor crying about normal life whilst on camera. Canada is so screwed.
So you'd prefer to see someone bluster and bluff with a phony hoooorah while coincidentally losing every military major engagement they've been in the last few decades? Priorities bubba, priorities!
