That game-tying 3-point heave in the playoffs against Seattle was used in NBA commercials during the late 90s... that was always how I knew Rex Chapman
Yeah. So I'm from Miami and grew up a heat fan, but I was also a low key Sonics fan. Those two seasons with Phoenix, Rex balled out. Gave The Sonics fits in the playoffs. Great times.
Funny story, so I actually met Rex Chapman about a year ago at a restaurant. This dude legitimately ate 3 steak platters and shared a foot tall chocolate cake with his wife. 😂 What a legend
Bro!! Chex Rapman is one of the most underrated shooters of all time imo. This is the era I grew up in and watched this man shoot the lights out over and over.
@@spazzout2339 with how the game is based today he would definitely succeed in this era where shooting 3s is a big part of the nba especially with all of the training and technology we have today to improve your game
@@spazzout2339 lmfao ok cause defense is close to as good today and its much more of an outside shooter game today that would help Rex a ton. When he played there were these players called centers and every team had them and they and the inside game was THE dominant force in nba. You sound like a 15 year old who never saw nba pre this century
As a kid I saw the fabled Suns three-pointer go down and it's still the most electrifying single moment I can remember seeing in a long life of NBA fandom. Rex stays underrated. An incredible character and unique player. Bonkers natural jumping ability. Made it look effortless. A really good thing dude's doing so well these days after a lot of drug abuse struggles following his career.
I remember this game. The Heat was short-handed. They’d just made a ton of Trades and barely even put a team on the court that night. It was unbelievable. I watched every Bulls-game that year back in Chicago.
Rex was and still is such an underrated player. He could do a little bit of everything and do it well. He’s in the same class (as far as underrated players) as Hedo Turkolglu, Peja Stojokavić, Shareef Abdur-Raheem, and Drazen Petrovic. There’s many more that could be added to that list that made a real impact on the game but for whatever reason have been forgotten of by time.
Michael has a tendency of playing the audience via circumstance! He was friends with Bird and Magic and agreed! He also knew Rex, just like he knew Kobe. Then there were players he hated and exploited! When they left the game they both called the agent and joked! This is selling!
Drazen was an international legend in his own right though. He was like the overseas Michael Jordan. I really believe had he not died, we would be talking today about how Steph was going for Petro's 3 pt record.
Shout to Rex. A Kentucky basketball legend and one of the real ones. The first University of Kentucky basketball player I can remember watching when I was 4 or 5. Him and Skywalker.
When people (Athletes especially) manage for a few times in their life get into the zone or flow state, something special often occurs. Awesome breakdown.

I had the pleasure of seeing Rex Chapman as a Suns in the late 90s. I tell you it was fun small ball 3-point team with Kevin Johnson, Jason Kidd, Dennis Scott, Welsey Person, and Steve Nash.
I tell people about Rex all the time. I started following him when he played at Kentucky. It was the first time I had seen a player where there was just as much a chance that he would would bang on you or hit 3's in your grill. Keep in mind this was back in the 80's/90's . That's not something you really saw in the NBA. Much less from a white guy. I really loved watching him play. He doesn't get mentioned nearly enough. Did not realize him and Mike were tight like that.
These are my favorite videos of yours jimmy, when you go in depth on obscure moments/drama stories dealing with the nba, where as your more general videos I still enjoy just not quite as much as these. I feel like I’m learning more as well.
Glad Rex is getting the recognition he deserves. The real ogs from the 90’s like my dad always told us, Chapman was the meanest white guy of that era and would dunk it on you're head like it was nothing.
You forgot to mention one major aspect from this game. The Heat only had 8 players available due to a trade. Still one of the greatest moments in early Heat history
Jimmy when you said "this is a story", I felt like now I got why your videos are so interesting. They are stories, generating the same feeling as story, not a show. I like that.
his mouth was clearly not saying "you cant guard me", its like he was explaining to Jordan what happened in that foul and mike was agreeing. they are collage buddies anyways.
Thing isn't they WERE actual friends. I expect even if he HAD talked mess to MJ it was in good humor, & im sure MJ would've known it & taken it good-naturedly. Rex knew better than to get all vicious with it.
5:41 he's turning around before the shot falls. He wasn't pushing Mike out of bounds he was pushed by mourning into Jordan. Great video, what a player.
I don't know what Rex was saying, but he was aggressive as hell in Jordan's face and Jordan was backing da fuc up.... Soooooo..... Jordan takes an L on this one.

@@mikesannitti6042 True! Since the formula is Points/Attempts, If someone shoots, say 300 2P FG at a 50% clip, that's 150 makes= 300 pts/300 attempts= 1.00 PPS. If they shoot 300 3P FG at 33% clip, that's 100 makes= 300 pts/300 attempts= 1.00 PPS. So if someone did that in their career, they would be at 1.00 PPS (not taking FT into account- that would be True Shot- TS%). I checked Larry Bird's career PPS (not taking FT into account), and it was 1.029. When taking FT into account, it was 1.00 - Not because he was a bad FT shooter, but because they are only 1 point each, so if he hit 100%, he would stay at 1.029, but since he's human and shot 88.6%, it brought the TS% down down to 1.00 (still good for 3rd best all time, behind Kareem- 1.021 and Ray Allen- 1.017). Comments don't allow links but if you search "Ray Allen and the Most Efficient Scorers Per Shot Taken in NBA History", you'll see an article by Bleacher Report, which ranks the top 21 players by TS%. It's from 2010 though, so maybe a few players have gotten onto the list, like Steph Curry. Edit- I just checked and his is 1.16! Ridiculous, lol
@@bryant475 of course that doesn't factor into the fact that misses, especially long ones do lead to more fast breaks so it's still better to get more makes, but if you're shooting at least 33% from 3 it's not a bad thing.
@@mikesannitti6042 True, btw idk why my comment had a line through part of it lol. But yeah a 33% 3P is solid! Check that article when you can! Also, another thing I thought about was that 2 pt shots are more likely to be blocked, compared to 3 pt shots, so it might offset the value of the 3 a bit more. It makes someone like Anthony Davis, who can shoot 3's but also has good post game and mid range game, pretty deadly. In my opinion though, he shouldn't fall in love so much with the 3, because they lose out on his offensive rebounding down low. Another factor is that taking more 2's (esp drives/layups/dunks), leads to more AND1s and FT opportunities... so yeah, lots to consider lol.

I love the smirk on Chapman's face when he said he got lucky
It‘s even crazier: Chapman said in the unterview the Heat had only eight players that night. 🙄
Thats Crazy!
He also said the entire bulls team went out the night before and was sluggish before the game
Lots of teams only use an 8 man rotation. So that means absolutely nothing and definitely is not crazy
@@MrShanester117 They were in a middle of a massive trade and had 8 players overall. Not ready for rotation, whole roster contained 8 ready to play players.
@@MrShanester117 You really don't think that dressing 8 players (and some were good players that were involved in a trade) against arguably the best team ever is notable? There are literally only 3 players that could come off the bench for the entire game. And most teams do go more than 8 deep in their rotation.
I love the way you give a story behind an event in the NBA whether it is a performance, argument or a moment in time where us younger hoopers wouldn't even know of.

Rex Chapman would easily average 20-25 ppg in today's game. Underrated player from the 90s.
If I was born in the 80s, I'll be a president now
Your buggin maybe max 20. He was a good player but 25 is still legit all star status he'd be a JR Smith type 6th man.
He not averaging more now then before makes no sense
This is so dope! The quality of storytelling is on another level
insane level
I remember this game. The Heat was short-handed. They’d just made a ton of Trades and barely even put a team on the court that night. It was unbelievable. I watched every Bulls-game that year back in Chicago.
Had only 8 players available. The trade for Tim Hardaway.
@@faustorivera4393 screw Tim Hardaway lol
Rex seems like such a chill nice guy. Would love to get a beer with him and hear him regale stories of his playing days. Seems really approchable.
Ben gordon, Allan Houston, Marbury
Drazen was an international legend in his own right though. He was like the overseas Michael Jordan. I really believe had he not died, we would be talking today about how Steph was going for Petro's 3 pt record.
@@LynxStarAuto fax. And i dont think dirks "best EU player" title would be as much of a staple if Drazen were still alive.

Those games towards the end of his career when he coincided with Jason (Ason) Kidd in PHX. Fast pace, great passing, flashy plays..... So much fun !!

2:00 I mean, even trae shooting that many threes on westbrook efficiency, trae only like 34% from three.
Honestly if you're shooting the 3 at 33% it's still a good shot. It's the same as shooting a 2 at 50% as far as points per shot in the long run.
