I've been watching the clip of the fall over and over again, I think the way Jordan choose to land his body saved him from severe injury. As soon as his foot touched the ground, he knew it wasn't right so he decided to land on his back, which resulted in his head hitting the ground hard (but that wasn't as serious), and lifted his waist so that his almost twisted foot didn't have to bare that much of weight. I think luck is one thing, but it's his experience and intelligence that saved him.

hood gold medalist I’m not certain, but I believe the part of his head that he hit was not a weak point, so the most he could have happen to him was a moderately bad concussion. Obviously that’s bad, but it’s a lot better than the multiple knee and ankle ligament and tendon tears he likely would have sustained if he had taken all the force to his leg (not to mention any bones in his foot that were broken by the pressure). I’d say arching his back there was the right move. I could be totally wrong though lmao
That and his conditioning that allows his body to take the fall and not be injured. Strong ACL and ligaments in legs prevent potential injuries from the same fall/twist. I know because my rehabbed ankle can now withstand a sprain like it's nothing.
That look MJ has at the end...he knows how close that was to a catastrophe. He saved him self by arching his back and letting his head hit the floor another reason why he's the GOAT
Open Four business that was the protection of all mighty God, thank you Jesus, we've ackward falls by plenty of NBA players, Steph Curry flipping over Trevor Ariza in the 2015 game 4 western Conference finals, the Gordan Heyward ackward landing in-between Jay Crowder and LeBron James in the first regular season game of the 2017 NBA campaign, the Willis Magahee ackward landing in the 2003 national championship football game between Ohio State and Miami to name a few in the 2000s century, injuries are part of sports, I'm just thankful the MJ fall wasnt castrophic and career ending
The way you expound on that is absolutely incredibly deep. I remember watching that game and would have never thought that that injury will change the landscape of the NBA that is truly a remarkable video
He trained not just to build muscles but also for flexibility and endurance. A lot of players do not do that nowadays because they are lazy, hence a lot of injuries
@@ReneParada MJ's trainer, Tim Grover, insists that there is no substitute for lifting real weights (not cables or bands) to build the proper foundation to perform and prevent injury. Through a certain weight training program, he also helped Kobe to reduce his knee problems.
It’s honestly incredible how his body was so strong and healthy, considering his habits of drinking beers at golf courses before games, smoking cigars, staying up late gambling, and playing 18-36 holes of golf before games. If any NBA players did that back then or today, they wouldn’t be nearly as effective. But Jordan was just built different.
True. Me and my dad would've never watched basketball. He watched basketball because of Jordan and continued to watch it because of him. I started because of Kobe. Jordan is basketball for us non-Americans.

6:48 "No wonder he's the GOAT.. The way he fell was like how a cat would try it's righting reflex. To be able to reflexively do that means that he jumped to the point that he not only perfected his landing but that it was deeply engraved instinctively in his body."
Dude, you are fucking insane. The data, the logic behind the thought processes, I mean; you really think about this shit and break it down. This was a wild video, especially being 37 and remembering all of those games like they were yesterday. Great take on it, really great take.
This may provide some insight into why MJ didn't get hurt. I have a rare genetic disorder called EDS, it's where my body produces defective collagen. Which means I am super flexible but that I will most likely dislocate a bone ( which I have had happend to me then more times then I can count) then to break something, had I would have had a fall like MJ. So my guess is that his conditioning played a massive role in this. Because if I fell the way Michael did, then I would have been ok too. He most likely was more flexible then most people may have realized. He was super quick on his feet and agile, that requires alot of flexibility of the body to do that. He also seemed to be hyper aware of his body due to the fact that he caught himself mid fall and corrected his landing to avoid a catastrophic fall. So he most likely included several types of exercises in his regime to keep as sharp as he did. Strength, cardio, stamina and flexibility all played a huge role in his ability to preform and maneuver to avoid any potential falls. I watched this cause I have fond memories of growing up and hearing about MJ in school all the time and even watching some games myself.
I think genes definitely played a role but more importantly than that it is Jordan's insane body control he got from gymnastics and training with his personal trainer (who was incredibly important support of Jordan), look at the moment when he's about to hit the ground the way he arches his back to make his head hit the floor so all the pressure/impact of the fall doesn't hit his legs and knees. Honestly seeing this footage and how Jordan avoided this drastic change I don't know why gymnastics/acrobatic training isn't forced on NBA players to prevent more of these injuries
His trainer played a huge role in his conditioning. He was insane, he watched every step and counted how many steps Jordan took and what angle he took them at to know where Jordan would be sore and what regiments to do. Obsessive and insane, but effective.
This video is one of the Biggest "What If" in the NBA I've seen. It's like the sports of Marvel. You should do more "What If NBA History". Cuz if you use this give me props, aight. #BKNY
True. I'm not too surprised though that MJ recovered. I always believed MJ took care of himself due to serious conditioning and knowing how to take a fall if necessary to avoid injury.
I had just turned 18 on that day. I feel so blessed to have been able to watch such quality NBA basketball in the late 80's all the way through the 90's. I don't think we'll ever see the likes of NBA basketball during that time, ever again.
Haha what a champ, and some people say previous era's weren't more physical ...just a regular shooting foul/clothesline lol Imagine someone fouling Lebron/Kawhi/Steph like this :O
I now see that greatness comes not from your bald-headed, god-like abilities but the sheer capability of making the grind turning out in your favor however the grind may come.
Yeah, but that same year they beat the real life MONSTARS in basically a 5 game sweep for the NBA championship...AND went on to 6 straight Eastern Conference finals. So what harm did drafting Darko actually do...like REALLY?
Krajis KOON You’re not wrong my friend those were some good times for Detroit basketball. It’s hard not to wonder what d-wade or melo would have added but I feel you.
@@fightsports66 Uhh, Melo NEVER won a ring with ANYONE. Wade and Shaq won a ring, then Wade, LeBron and Bosh won rings. Bosh only won rings with Wade AND LeBron. Detroit would have NEVER had either of those combinations by simply drafting Wade, Bosh, or Melo instead of Darko. So in the legendary words of Kanye West..."HOW SWAY?"
Can't imagine what NBA and the world would've been like without MJ in 90's. It's impossible to think. He meant way more than just a fancy basketball league. Never seen any player changing the meaning of sports and even the world since Air Jordan. Everyday I watch his play on youtube and it feels the same like watching him on TV back in the day as i was a boy.

He's better off with a plethera of leg injuries then entering a coma
hood gold medalist I’m not certain, but I believe the part of his head that he hit was not a weak point, so the most he could have happen to him was a moderately bad concussion.
This is just what I thought
WOW, didn’t realize there were medical professionals coming in here
That look MJ has at the end...he knows how close that was to a catastrophe.

Great conditioning and a really healthy and pliable body helped MJ. He must have been really flexible. Just shows what a great athlete he really was.
Jordan took ballet lessons for footwork and flexibility. It probably helped him out a lot in this instance.
“IF” this happened.. NBA wouldnt be this popular worldwide, it’ll had been just a “Sport”
True. Me and my dad would've never watched basketball. He watched basketball because of Jordan and continued to watch it because of him. I started because of Kobe. Jordan is basketball for us non-Americans.

Yeety McFly IV and MJ averaged over 37 mins a game in both seasons, missed 21 in the 2001-2002season due to injury but played all 82games in the 2002-2003season at 39yrs old and turned 40yrs old on February 17th of that year after all-star break, load management was never talked about back then like players do in sports in 2019, wit all the new studies and technology on how athletes can stay healthy and play longer and improved nutrition nowadays and there's p.e.d. performance enhancing drug use rapidly among NBA players, particularly star players, and they load management, no new era player should ever be compared to the players of 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s interms of physicality and toughness and fundamentals and skill, period, and i embrace today's NBA players

"No wonder he's the GOAT.. The way he fell was like how a cat would try it's righting reflex. To be able to reflexively do that means that he jumped to the point that he not only perfected his landing but that it was deeply engraved instinctively in his body."

Props for this video, I was hooked to the NBA in the 90s and didn’t know about this fall. MJ got right back up like nothing even happened. Love MJ.
He hit his head becus in that split second all he thought about was saving his leg. The human body is so amazing sometimes
Yeah you can tell If he didn't let his head hit, his knee would've been jacked.

Mj actually saved himself hitting his head he was pushing up his body saving the leg
Ather Chavez I'm glad someone else saw that
Ather Chavez greatest Athlete ever. Strong like Bull
Borris Bozeman he definitely felt it coming but that awareness is Goat level
You're right. Knowing how to fall safely is an important skill in sports like these. His body saw the injury coming and reacted to prevent it.
I'm glad that didn't happen the way this video is seeing it.
7:00 luckily MJ secretly took gymnastics in the 8th grade👍
Professional Commenter nah its the shoes
This guy has a lot of time on his hands...
Kobe wouldn't have been the Kobe we know. Michael being in the league resulted in Kobe pushing himself to be what he eventually became.
"Balling out for 1.1 Seconds." Congrats, Bill! That's balling out longer than any of us watching this Video have done in the NBA.
