I've been out of fish keeping for 26 years. Bought a second hand tank a couple weeks ago, plants are settling in nicely, and just got back from the shop with a dozen lovely little black neons. I am one happy chappy, thanks for the comparison video! Found it very useful and informative.
My experience with both has brought me to the same conclusions you have shared. I have the black neons in my 75 with other peaceful fish and they are relaxing to watch.
Black neons are very hardy and pretty much bulletproof. I have 16 of them in my heavily planted tank. I even managed to spawn 2 more black neons without doing anything. So now i have 18.
Main difference is Neons or Cardinals have striking color that is visible from across the room. Blacks you really need to get close to appreciate them.
Thank you Jason. I've had a 20 long aquarium setup for about 6 months now. . I started with 6 black belt tetras and about 15 neon tetras and about 6 black neon tetras. All the neon tetras died within three weeks. I went back and bought 12 more neon tetras that also died. So no more neon tetras. I'm sure it's the water. But all the other fish are doing well.
I think I read or heard that the standard neon is one of the longest lived tera you can buy. They just don't get kept in the proper parameters. Rachel Oleary claimed she had a couple that were, I forget what she said exactly, but something like 8 or 10 years old.
I can't believe it. You have the same combination I have - Black Neons with a blue Dwarf Gurami. Funny, hey? BTW, my blue Gurami is called Gazza (short for Gary).
Why no cardinal neons in the tank too? Seems like a good trio. I have a 29 gallon im trying to figure out. The black neons don’t look like they are schooling in this video
I'm almost positive that the black has a sizeable appearance and I have been keeping them all for many years. The last few years I have been enjoying green and have them in all 9 aquariums . 💚🖤❤️💙
@@schmidtsville I get that - though a Cardinal is pictured - but I know neons and cardinals pretty well, what I don't know is Black Neons, so it's a pretty useful video.
@@Lilyflowergirl98 I think it’s because they’re monochrome. People tend to want bright, saturated colors like what you see in neon and cardinal tetras, while black neons - true to their name - are black and silver, so they don’t seem as attractive, but I hear they look amazing when they shoal and provide a perfect to more colorful tankmates, especially in a planted tank
My preference between those tetras are the black neon's. I don't love red in any decore items I have at home. It's a matter of choice color for everyone.
Everyday I wake up to one dead neon tetra. I've tested my water and it is fine. I have other friendly species and they seem fine. It only seems to be my neon tetras that die. I do notice a couple being aggressive to each other even though they are in a large group. Are neon tetras capable of bullying and killing each other? If so, what are some possible reasons why? I gave a 55 gallon tank and a group of 25 neon tetras, along with 5 clown loaches and 5 dwarf neon rainbow fish
I have 12 black neons in my tank. I actually like the look better in my aquarium. Very hardy and they seem to like to occupy the upper third of my tank, which I needed. They are also pretty active. One more thing: very inexpensive! What's not not like?
The standard neons are so pretty, but I've never had them live longer than two years. Lost most of them before that. My black neons are much hardier, like you said and I've never seen evidence of disease in the black neons. I am really curious about the fish that are bright yellow with red under the tail, that were swimming among the standard neon tetras. What are those?
In my experience the black neons are more hardy than standard neons but there’s no way I could pick between the two especially since they school as one species in a tank together🐠💙🔥
black neons are the obvious winner, normal neons got the colour battle won but black neons got nice colours too and they are hardier (more or less bullet proof) they are bigger so more suitable to live with more types of fish but still not huge that they cant fit into smaller tanks, when people come to me and are like i want a fish that wont die right away i sigh then point to the black neons first every time
I had both black and regular Neons in my 36 gallon I ended up with a case of ick and all the fish cleared up except for the black neon they all died from it
Doesn't matter if Blax are hardier, easier to feed, breed, and live longer. NOTHING compares to Neon color and character! Neons are the DIAMOND of Aq fish!!!
Black neon Tetra are get less sick and more hardier than standard neon tetra because they been bred so much that when you get them from a pet store they get move slow and get sick
Whoever says black neon tetras aren’t as beautiful as standard neon tetras never seen black neons under a black light That fluorescent blue glows neon green I had a school I named The Lightning Crew because they looked like green lightning under a black light💯⚡️🐠💙🔥

Nice! Thanks for being here!
Black neons in a black water tank is a beautiful sight to behold. One of my most favorite tanks I’ve ever kept in 40+ years
Black neons, in black water, with blacklight, bought on a black friday, being observed wearing a black shirt, petting a black cat.
My experience with both has brought me to the same conclusions you have shared. I have the black neons in my 75 with other peaceful fish and they are relaxing to watch.
I agree with your sentiment Jason. I love both species, but the Black Neon is heartier and will fare better off for the majority of fishkeepers
Black neons are very hardy and pretty much bulletproof. I have 16 of them in my heavily planted tank. I even managed to spawn 2 more black neons without doing anything. So now i have 18.
Nice!
Crinum calamistratum looks great in that wood .Fish always look great .
Main difference is Neons or Cardinals have striking color that is visible from across the room. Blacks you really need to get close to appreciate them.
There definitely is and I can already guess!
Also that’s a cardinal tetra in the thumbnail 😅
Ya I know 😀
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Heh. Well I was thinking it made for a better picture 🤣
Cardinal tetra is the real winner
Black Neons and Glowlight Tetras are a nice combination, and seem quite hardy.

I agree with everything you are saying here about these Tetras.
My black neons thrive while other tetras have not been as hardy. ❤ them!
Black Neons for the win. Bulletproof and great community fish. Easily won me over.
I think I read or heard that the standard neon is one of the longest lived tera you can buy. They just don't get kept in the proper parameters. Rachel Oleary claimed she had a couple that were, I forget what she said exactly, but something like 8 or 10 years old.
Every once in a while I’ll get an old one too 😀
You make me want to try the black tetra! Thank you. 😊

I like the pair of cherry barbs trying to school with the 100+ neons.
Jason, is the picture in your thumbnail a Cardinal Tetra?
Yep - I’ll fix it
@@PrimeTimeAquaticsno worries. I figured it was a quick gaffe. Thanks for changing it. 🎉
That's a Neon in the thumb nail.
I'm almost positive that the black has a sizeable appearance and I have been keeping them all for many years. The last few years I have been enjoying green and have them in all 9 aquariums . 💚🖤❤️💙
Black neon takes the win in my books. A lot hardier and can go along with a lot more fish varieties.
Ooooh hey, I'm actually waffling between cardinals and black neons right now for my 75g nano tank!
Too bad as the video is about neon tetras and black neons haha.
@@schmidtsville I get that - though a Cardinal is pictured - but I know neons and cardinals pretty well, what I don't know is Black Neons, so it's a pretty useful video.

Sure does 😀
I am an expert and it is a Cardinal Tetra. 😅
False. Cardinal's red stretch the entirety of its body
@@kevinnguyen1595 He changed the thumbnail. As you can see even he said it was in his comment.
I’ve had both and I would choose both and I’m going to try both again.
Have fun!
Black neons are lovely, get a big group and what them shoal. Lovely underated fish ❤
Very underrated! I think they’d look especially great with a brightly colored centerpiece fish for them to contrast against ❤️
@@garg4531 I agree. They're one of my favourites. It's weird how many people find them boring

What is the nutsedge-looking plant in the black neon tank?
How many black neons do you recommend in a heavily planted 20L with a single Bolivian ram as the center piece fish and a pair of peacock gudgeon?
You could do 10-12!

I don't buy the neons tetras any more they seem to have spine issues.I ike the Cardinals and Black neons no issues with those 2 so far.
I've had black neons for around 4 years now. Regular neons I've had bad luck with.
Why is there a Cardinal Tetra in the thumbnail 😂
Ya I need to fix that - haha
Green neons win with me every time 😉
I love all tetras they're a great little fishy hard to breed though

Black neons are the best, in my opinion. Don't do well with the standard. Cardinals, I do well with tho.
I had both black and regular Neons in my 36 gallon I ended up with a case of ick and all the fish cleared up except for the black neon they all died from it
Sorry that happened

I dont know why, but every time I've gotten a group of black neon tetras, they've become semi aggressive towards all my other fish.
Well that’s not cool!
Do the black neon tetras eat cherry shrimp?
They could eat baby shrimp?
Black neon Tetra are get less sick and more hardier than standard neon tetra because they been bred so much that when you get them from a pet store they get move slow and get sick
All i could think of watching this was how green neons are better than both.
Too funny
Black neons are almost bulletproof

Ok guys, 10 points if you've spotted the Cardinal Tetra.
