It's pretty cool when you have a niche interest, you can find some people talking about it. Just ignore those dime-a-dozen mainstream cash grabs, no one forcing you to listen to that shit.
Totally agree! Niche podcasts are where podcasts really excel. “Containers” for example is an 8-part audio documentary about how global trade has transformed the economy and ourselves. Really fascinating. I disagree that nobody is forcing anyone to listen to the mainstream podcasts, arguably as they increase in popularity, algorithms on platforms like RUclips suggest it to more people and these shows become part of mainstream entertainment and therefore a part of mainstream discourse too. “Did you hear X on Y’s podcast” is now a phrase you will often hear.
Great content and topic. Generally I don’t have the time and attention especially those podcasts. Some of those RUclips creators already has their own RUclips channels with better curated videos, but still engage in some form of podcast from time to time. They might have a topic for the podcast, but the preparation beforehand, the infotainment factor could be the Achilles despite having a good guest. To my experience the most boring is the podcast with a group of guests doing a Zoom call for all to see and listen to, lasting 1 hour or more.
Pretty much. The thing with podcasts is that on RUclips, they basically only suggest this one format of host interviews guest, as that has the most mainstream appeal. For other (non-podcast) RUclips videos, RUclips does a much better job of tailoring users feeds to their unique interests and general niches. RUclips hasn’t really been able to figure out a way to have niche podcasts suggested to the right niche audiences. On Apple Podcasts, I listen to a lot of economic/business podcasts. On RUclips I watch economic/business videos yet for some reason my home feed is also littered with podcasts from comedians and washed up actors interviewing experts or other celebs on topics unrelated to the content I consume. It’s not an issue with my feed, it’s a well known issue, and RUclips has even addressed that they are working on ways to improve podcast suggestions and separate them from other suggested videos.

what's the point of this? 99% of anything is shit. the market filters through the winners over the long run. podcasts are just a product like anything else. this is like complaining about the difficulty of finding a good and the right book to read in a library.
I understand your argument, and I don’t necessarily disagree. The argument of this video however is not to complain about abundance, but rather that the dominant format of podcasts has become incredibly repetitive, and for CASUAL listeners, this format is basically the only thing they see suggested to them. Many casual listeners have since become fatigued with podcasts and so are other podcasters. As podcasts become increasingly competitive, it’s pushed many creators to create similar content as that is what works best to be suggested by these platforms. I am a massive supporter of free-markets and competition, but the way platforms like RUclips currently operate, they push mainstream content to mainstream viewers. That’s fine but this has left a clear impact on podcasts. There’s not a chance that for casual, mainstream audiences they are going to be suggested niche but incredible podcasts like “Hardcore History,” “Containers,” “A Way With Words” etc. Sure, a library often has a popular section, but it also neatly categorizes topics and displays each book equally on a shelf for you to find. RUclips doesn’t do that at all. If RUclips was a library it would just be a pile of popular books scattered on the floor and the niche (but excellent) content would be hidden in a closet. RUclips even changed their search system so after around 8 highly relevant suggestions to your search term, they will embed other less relevant trending videos even if it’s not remotely about the topic you searched. This has made niche podcast content on RUclips much more difficult to find. I love podcasts and the medium is evolving so fast. The issue is that the platforms are dictating much of the evolution of podcasts, not necessarily for the better, but what has the most mainstream appeal.
