Late in 2014, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis welcomed a very special guest to their Manhattan stage: nine-time GRAMMY winning singer, songwriter, actor, and activist Rubén Blades. For one unforgettable night-music-directed by the JLCO’s bassist and “emerging master in the Latin jazz idiom” (DownBeat) Carlos Henriquez-the worlds of salsa and swing collided. Backed by one of the world’s leading big bands, Blades took the audience on a tour through his greatest hits. In their write-up of the show, the New York Times said "Mr. Henriquez’s arrangements delivered consistently... Radically beautiful."
Now, Una Noche con Rubén Blades captures this historic concert in CD and digital formats. The album finds the Maestro singing some of his own beloved compositions, including “Pedro Navaja,” “Patria,” and “El Cantante,” as well as swinging through standards like “Too Close for Comfort” and “Begin the Beguine,” all while backed by the Downbeat Reader’s Poll Big Band of the Year (2013, ‘14, & ‘15). Pick up this kaleidoscopic, momentous collaboration between two of our most soulful musicians.

Más sin embargo, al que no le guste este trabajo artístico de alta calidad el cuál nos presenta el Maestro Blades, se le pone en calidad de duda su capacidad de ver colores y se entender la diversa complejidad de éste trabajo. Este sabor artístico el cuál nos propone Don Rubén Blades, es tal, a la brocha de un inspirado pintor, el cuál colorea a su gusto el sabor de nuestra música y nuestra cultura - desde las calles de Cuba - los callejones de Borikén - hasta los pasillos del Palledium en New York City. Don Rubén Blades...agarra su papel y bolígrafo cuando algo le enferma el alma; abre su boca y se transforma en una profesía artística. El mejor poeta articulado de nuestros tiempos. Sin lugar a duda, y sin plataforma que le asemeje.

Wynton y la Lincoln hoy día son los únicos capaces de recuperar los valores tradicionales de las big band de los 40'-50'... Ruben naturalmente a la altura !!!
Asi es, excelente concierto para mi faltó un medley para Mario Bauza y su tema Tonga, o también Cano Pozo con Manteca, temas tan íconicos que proyectaron en esas epocas lo que se conoceria como latin jazz, y este evolucionara en salsa. Pero en fin excelente performance de la Lincoln Center Orchesta with Wynton Marsalis, y ni hablar del maestro Rubén la volvió a votar del estadio con este concierto.

Siempre es un placer escuchar al maestro, y no entiendo el ingles, un artista a carta cabal.
Recién a poco conozco a Rubén Blades (de lo que me perdía) . Y ahora me entero que tocó con también con nada mas y nada menos que la LCO. Qué gigante. Realmente un privilegio mágico poder escuchar esta belleza desde mi propio escritorio. Gracias.
Aunque es una orquesta de jazz ! Les aseguro que estaban mas que contento de poder sus instrumentos a sonar " lo nuestro" .,obra maestra que ojala y se repita dos mundos que se chocaron : jazz ( el maestro wynton marsalis ) la salsa ( otro maestro Ruben Blades ). Son caballos Paso fino! Aight.para el que conoce la materia!

As much as I like Mr Blades, this rendition of Begin the beguine is not fully cooked.
This is hands down a renewed Begin the Beguine. Cooked with different, older, superior ingredients. As much as I like Begin the Beguine, it’s much better when the rhythms and tones of Africa conjure it in that kitchen.
