Late in 2014, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis welcomed a very special guest to their Manhattan stage: nine-time GRAMMY winning singer, songwriter, actor, and activist Rubén Blades. For one unforgettable night-music-directed by the JLCO’s bassist and “emerging master in the Latin jazz idiom” (DownBeat) Carlos Henriquez-the worlds of salsa and swing collided. Backed by one of the world’s leading big bands, Blades took the audience on a tour through his greatest hits. In their write-up of the show, the New York Times said "Mr. Henriquez’s arrangements delivered consistently... Radically beautiful."
Now, Una Noche con Rubén Blades captures this historic concert in CD and digital formats. The album finds the Maestro singing some of his own beloved compositions, including “Pedro Navaja,” “Patria,” and “El Cantante,” as well as swinging through standards like “Too Close for Comfort” and “Begin the Beguine,” all while backed by the Downbeat Reader’s Poll Big Band of the Year (2013, ‘14, & ‘15). Pick up this kaleidoscopic, momentous collaboration between two of our most soulful musicians.

A fines de 2014 el cantante y político panameño Rubén Blades fue el invitado de la Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra para hacer el especial "Una Noche con Rubén Blades", donde interpretó temas como el standard "Too Close for Comfort". Un concierto magnifico con la célebre orquesta de Wynton Marsalis, dirigida por su bajista Carlos Henríquez, la salsa y el swing se dieron la mano en un concierto del que el New York Times hizo una crítica estupenda. #SwingJazz

"SI que me dio 'cosas' cuando Wynton Marsalis y yo conversábamos sobre el repertorio que debia cantar con la orquesta que dirige. Wynton me dijo 'ustedes los Fania e incluso los anteriores a su generación, eran bastante desenvueltos para cantar tipo Big Band Swing. Claro, depende del inglés que tengas. Y tu eres egresado de la Universidad de Harvard'. Y le respondo - Wynton, si ni siquiera soy el mejor cantante de jazz en casa!"... Blades está casado con una cantante profesional de jazz...
Al ex tenista Andre Agassi una vez le entrevistaron dentro de su casa. Creo fue la primera vez y como excepción. Su esposa, la también ex tenista Steffi Graff estaba por ahí pero el acuerdo estipuló que no iba a participar. El entrevistador le planteó alguna interrogante y Agassi pensando un poco le dijo "ay, me lo me preguntas a mi? Si yo no soy ni el mejor tenista en esta casa". Andre llegó creo a 8 Grand Slams ganados... Steffi se retiró con 21 solo en títulos individuales... Rubén y André respondieron parecido
Blades viene de una generación de cantantes que si no obtenían el éxito de inmediato, como vocalistas de Salsa en "New York ciudad de acero no se si te odio, no se si te quiero", para trabajar tenían que tener cierto dominio de géneros cercanos al que hacer de la Salsa: swing jazz, música brasileña, soul, básicamente. Aún sin cantar en inglés por no tener la pronunciación suficiente, tenían que saber como cantar ese tipo de arreglos jazzy. Expertos en eso Lavoe, Cbeo Feliciano, Adalberto Santiago, Ismael Quintana y hasta Henry Fiol, que aunque no lo hizo más que una sola vez con una composición de Antonio Carlos Jobim, mostró que había estudiado, por qué le salió increíble como colocó su voz en medio de esas armonías
