Tolstoy and Dickens are two authors I wanted to acquaint myself with this year anyway, I'm so excited to read their works alongside everyone else here ^^
@@Yiran I haven't read much yet (only Crime and Punishment and some short novels and stories) but I can say C&P was a fascinating mind-blowing heartbreaking experience for sure. I want to read all his works of course but especially his other 4 great novels. I also highly recommend Notes from Underground and The House of the Dead.
@@joannaszulc1496 This is terrible. Because this work must be read before entering the11th grade. And you have no entry. You must read it. And no one is interested in the fact that this is a very difficult to understand, voluminous and complex work
@@joannaszulc1496 hey, I'm also a Russian, so I thought I could add a little. Literature in general isn't very well studied here. You have to read a lot every year, but there are so many books to be read that there is barely enough time to cover everything in class. For example, during the last year of school we studied 'And quiet flows the Don' a huge novel that can be easily compared to W&P, written by Sholokhov. We literally spent like four or five hours on this complex, complicated and emotionally dark piece and then moved on to other novels. And this happens with many other great works too, there's just not enough time to cover everything they want us to read
And I agree with ANN TET, barely anyone in class is interested. Russian literature is quite dark and difficult to read, process and understand in general, and especially for teenagers, who don't give a damn about Tolstoy or Pushkin or any other writer who lived at that times
An interesting addendum to this series would be a video or two looking at the lives of the author’s themselves. Comparing their historical contexts, their family lives etc. For example Tolstoy’s wife kept diaries detailing her life and it might be interesting to compare that to the fiction that Tolstoy wrote.
War and Peace is truly one of the greatest books I have ever read. I was petrified of it at first, but it's so accessible, and the characters are just so amazing. Prince Andrei Bolkonsky is still one of my favorite characters of all time--and that scene about the tree in the field! BUT! I also really love Dickens, and Great Expectations and David Copperfield are also two of my favorites.
I'm so excited for this! This is gonna be my first book club read (will also try some of the DA books)! Not gonna lie, I really wanted the motivation to read Tolstoy and Dickens and now knowing that both of you will be reading along, it will make the next 4 years of my life so much better! Backing Tolstoy for the overall win, 'cause everyone I meet says War and Peace is the best work of literature ever and critics also hold to that point. It's gonna be exciting, thank you for doing this!
i absolutely adore russian literature so I'm kinda biased, but I can't wait to read them both! great expectations and anna karenina are books that have been on my tbr for a really long time
This is the best idea ever! Tolstoy is my favourite and I loved Great Expectations and Little Dorrit by Dickens but for years I haven’t felt like picking Dickens again so this is a great motivation 👌
oh my god this is so cool! I just downloaded Childhood Boyhood Youth from my library. I've always been scared of reading Tolstoy because of how huge his books are and just the literary pressure that comes with picking up his works. I'm so excited and can't wait to demystify him :)
So excited about this! I also love that debate video and am interested to see where I’ll fall. I’m pumped to have motivation for War and Peace and to continue on with Dickens! I love that you guys will be sharing your annotation system with us. Looking forward to getting started this month!
This makes me so happy I'm gonna cry!! I love to see people discover Dickens and Tolstoy's works for the first time. 🥰 I've read all of Dickens and most of Tolstoy before, and I already have a crazy amount of reading to do this year, but I'm desperate to join in with this! I'll definitely read Childhood, Boyhood, Youth this month because it's been on my physical TBR for a while. But don't worry, Pickwick Papers definitely won't let you down. It's fantastic. Btw, I love Tolstoy, but I'm 100% #TeamDickens, and it'll take Carolyn a heck of a lot of work to sway me on that. 😉
Read War and Peace many years ago. Also, saw the tv series ages ago I believe on PBS. A very young Anthony Hopkins played Pierre if I remember right. I will definitely read it again with you. Happy New Year 🍺
This looks exciting! I read 'David Copperfield' I think when I was in middle school. Since then I have been a huge fan of Dickens. This could give me more motivation to keep with you all. 😃 The size of "War and Peace" has always scared me.
What motivated me to read it was reading Jon Krakauer's book Into the Wild, and War and Peace being a book Chris Mccandless strongly recommended. Random haha. But it truly is a beautiful and awe-inspiring book! The war parts are harder to get through at times but in the end are worth it. So go for it!
through the whole video, I was really really genuinely sad for everyone in the world who don't have the ability to read Tolstoy's books in Russian. Lots of things get lost in translation :(((
Team Dickens all the way because The Great Expectations is one of my favorite classics and I find Ana Karenina to be such a slog. I'm so excited for this project because I've been meaning to read War and Peace for so long and it will be a lovely excuse to read more Dickens ❤
Love the challenge. I've read all the Dickens novels (not in chronological order.) I'm working my way through Anna Karinina right now. The Adventures of Nickolas Nickelby is one of my top 3 favorite Dickens. A painting doesn't need to be precisely literal to convey emotion or movement or narrative, and neither does a novel. Enjoy Dickens for what he creates in you and how well it holds up in our current historical moment. Cant wait to hear what you think.
Only read Dickens' A Christmas Carol back in elementary. It's my favorite Christmas movie revamps especially Scrooge with Bill Murray and Jim Carey's A Christmas Carol... I also played in a play for it in middle school. I don't know about anything regarding Tolstoy or any other works by Dickens. I don't think I'm literate enough for this challenge.
I'm soooooo excited for this....at the moment I'm so much for Dickens but hearing you talk about Anna Karenina I think I'll probably change my opinion!
Never really got to their monumental works, although been wanting to for a long time. I'm very excited to read along with you. It's actually so helpful with the schedule, some kind of motivation to stay on track. I'll be starting on the team 'Tolstoy' just because I'm more familiar with his work, and also because I'm Russian:)
I've read the exact same works as you have of both Tolstoy and Dickens. While there's room to maneuver, I'd say I'm currently in Tolstoy's camp. I hope to be able to read along, though I've got a hefty reading list for a couple of projects, so I can't say for certain if I'll be able to join in or not..
I am panickinggg two videos in two days... I still haven’t watched the last one fkshskfkkff but this is the only right way to start 2021. Happy new year Emma! Have a great one 💛
I literally just bought a copy of Anna Karenina & Great Expectations yesterday before I have even seen this video! It would also be my first Tolstoy & Dickens read. I'm so excited ❤️
Poetry mixed with prose?!? Egad! I suppose the organization scheme is chronological. This is a great concept, even if I'd rather spend the next four years re-re-re-reading everything Baudelaire put to page.
I love that debate, but what first brought me to it was one of the actors performing the scenes from the book. It being a Dickens vs Tolstoy debate was a plus. I don't have the first Tolstoy book, but I do have the Dickens book, so I'll start joining then.
This will be a very busy year for me, but I will do my best to keep up with this, as I love these two authors and I've been wanting to read more Dickens!
Happy New year from Russia. Its awesome to hearing about author from my country. Tolstoy is incredible writer, but i think his novels more curious than his big works. And it will be nice to read something from Dickens accept Christmas short stories.
That's a wonderful project, I've never seen anything similar on Booktube/bookstagram! I'll definitely try and join for the Tolstoy's books, and try to pick a few of Dickens, as I've never read anything by him! I may be a bit biased but I feel like it would have been interesting to include a french author ( given this is centered around Europe). I'm looking forward for eveyrthing you'll share with us :)
Omigosh this sounds like the best idea ever, I might actually have to join you in reading (and re-reading) all their books these coming years! I also LOVE those title pages with the illustrations on them, they look gorgeous. I guess at the moment I'm in Tolstoy's corner, but I think you could make the case that Charles Dickens was arguably the better storyteller of the two, especially for serialization. It will be interesting to see if my opinion flip-flops as I go through the books one by one. I haven't been this excited by reading plans in years...
Last year I read 4 Dickens novels : Our Mutual Friend, Dombey and Son, Oliver Twist and David Copperfield... and I have literally just picked up Anna Karenina as there is a readathon of Anna Karenina on Sophia Clef's channel. I love the ambition here. I have dabbled with both Dickens and Tolstoy and enjoyed them both. I'm not a big fan of setting them in opposition to one another except as a driver for fun projects like this. Best of luck!
I have been a Dickens fanatic since grammar school (when I had a small part in "A Christmas Carol" production). I've now read all his novels (most of them twice and three times), as well as most of his travel books ("American Notes" is the best!). Of Tolstoy I have only read "Resurrection." I loved it, but it's like comparing autos and airplanes--really incomparable. Good on you for trying!
oh my god i am SO excited!!!! this is going to be amazing!!!!!!! and as someone who wrote their honors thesis on war and peace, i am 100% in tolstoy's corner!!
Fun Fact: Tolstoy considered Dickens' works (particularly David Copperfield) to be some of the few works of literature that were in his opinion 'good art'. I was thinking of getting into Dickens and rereading Tolstoy this year and now I don't have an excuse not to!
Hello, Tolstoi's canon is interesting - he wrote his early prose ( which is considerable ), then War and Peace. and he only wrote three short pieces in between WP and AK, then AK, then his late faze of more short fiction. Although Tolstoy and Dickens were both 19th C heavy-weights: their canons don't correspond point for point. I understand Tolstoy was fond of Dickens. And, of course, Dostoevsky was known to admire Dickens too. Hope it goes well!!
i don’t think i have the time or energy to read every book with you guys but i definitely want to read anna karenina with you all in june and july since i’ve had it for so long and needed a push, a reason to get to it. i’ll also read oliver twist in may because my dad played the role of oliver in the musical adaptation when he was in college and i’d love to talk about the story with him. he’s always talked about his experiences with that musical and he still knows some of the lines and most of the songs lol
Hey Emmie! Thanks to your Phantom of the Opera recommendation we read it (also purchased the nice smaller volume version!). We absolutely loved it, and decided to review it on our channel! :D Happy Holidays!
I just bought dickens’s great expectations two weeks ago , a copy of 200 pages . I was CHOCKED when I googled it and found out that it is +800 pages novel . I was so excited but my GREAT EXPECTATIONS vanished.
Charles Dickens “ Hard Times “ is a good one to start with. Published around 1851. Rather short by Dickens standard at roughly 300 pages. The Old Curiosity Shop and American Notes are both good reads well. Just my opinion.
Ah hmmm I had a different experience. Hard Times was my 4th Dickens and I hated it, it didn’t have the same , flavor(?) as the Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, & A Tale of two cities (the first 3 dickens I read). I think Great Expectations is better to start with, I remember it being the easiest to follow :)
So excited for this! I'll be reading war and peace in Russian so I can't wait to see how the interpretations will go in English and the arguments that accompany it! Thank you for doing this!
It's May already. So, I'm at least 4 months late. Am I still going to join in the book club and hopefully lose my little mind (not really) while reading all these Dickens and Tolstoy books? YESSSS! 🌱👩🏫 by the way, I'm defending Tolstoy right now! 🥰
I love how booktube is paying more attention to Classics ! Or is it only me stumbling on book videos about classics ?🤔 Anyways I am super excited for this , Dickens is my absolute favourite author and I loved Anna Karenina, so it will be really good to read War and peace too and see what these debates will be like 👍 thank you for making these 😊
I'm in Dickens' corner but only because I really didn't enjoy Anna Karenina. It was the first major Russian novel I read and it was a slog for me to get through, whereas Great Expectations was much more enjoyable though I can't say I care for Dickens' other work. Love the idea of this debate though!
I am placing my life in your hands as I love these two classic authors so please count me in as I wanna be with you both for the next 4 years please stay safe love from Australia ❤️❤️
You should consider collaborating with 'Books and Things' involved, they've got the biggest Dickens fascination and collection I've ever seen on Booktube! I've got a first edition of Barnaby Rudge, might be time to dust it off and read it.
I've only ever read Dickens, sooo I suppose I am on Dickens side atm... but I have both a Danish and English edition of Anna Karinana that I am really excited to get to hehe war and peace scares the Dickens out of me tho hehe 🤣
I plan on reading Anna Karenina this year. I've always been intimidated by Tolstoy. I had a hard time with Dickens honestly...I love the mini series of Little Dorrit though. Maybe I should just read Little Dorrit. Great Expectations was not my favorite.
Adding a second comment to add: what about Dostoevsky? The Brothers Karamazov is FANTASTIC.
One of my favourite books! xx
Yes!! I haven't read any Tolstoy yet but IMO Dostoyevsky>Dickens
I absolutely agree! On the last 100 pages of the brothers Karamazov and it's such a masterpiece.
Dostoievsky tops all of them. There is no point in making the comparison
@@lavluv This is exactly what I was going to say!
Tolstoy and Dickens are two authors I wanted to acquaint myself with this year anyway, I'm so excited to read their works alongside everyone else here ^^
me too! :)
The passion both of you show in the face of 4 years of reading some of the most dense and long books ever is amazing 😅😍

i don’t think i have the time or energy to read every book with you guys but i definitely want to read anna karenina with you all in june and july since i’ve had it for so long and needed a push, a reason to get to it. i’ll also read oliver twist in may because my dad played the role of oliver in the musical adaptation when he was in college and i’d love to talk about the story with him. he’s always talked about his experiences with that musical and he still knows some of the lines and most of the songs lol
Thank you for doing this!
this bookclub looks interesting! i don't know if i can really commit because i haven't read any of their books, but i'll try to join ❤
It's May already. So, I'm at least 4 months late. Am I still going to join in the book club and hopefully lose my little mind (not really) while reading all these Dickens and Tolstoy books? YESSSS! 🌱👩🏫
by the way, I'm defending Tolstoy right now! 🥰
I love how booktube is paying more attention to Classics ! Or is it only me stumbling on book videos about classics ?🤔
Anyways I am super excited for this , Dickens is my absolute favourite author and I loved Anna Karenina, so it will be really good to read War and peace too and see what these debates will be like 👍 thank you for making these 😊
Lol I read live A Christmas Carol last week. It comes with music and b-roll. I love the comparison today.
aaaaah you already know this, but I cannot wait!!! 💚💚
War and Peace is part of my soul.
Very hard for anyone to decide, great masters
Great project! Happy New year :)
I’ve never heard of Tolstoy before so I guess I’m with Dickens
You should consider collaborating with 'Books and Things' involved, they've got the biggest Dickens fascination and collection I've ever seen on Booktube! I've got a first edition of Barnaby Rudge, might be time to dust it off and read it.
I'm watching you from Turkey😻 Merhaba🙋🏻♀️
@cthulhu66 Ne mutlu oldum❤🙏🏻
I finally have the first book 📖 of this video looking forward to reading 📖 it as i love both of them
I've only ever read Dickens, sooo I suppose I am on Dickens side atm... but I have both a Danish and English edition of Anna Karinana that I am really excited to get to hehe war and peace scares the Dickens out of me tho hehe 🤣
I plan on reading Anna Karenina this year. I've always been intimidated by Tolstoy. I had a hard time with Dickens honestly...I love the mini series of Little Dorrit though. Maybe I should just read Little Dorrit. Great Expectations was not my favorite.
Oh my god, literally my top reading goal for 2021 is to read more by Tolstoy, I am so excited😍
