same thing happened to me bro..i thought nothing scorsese made could touch goodfellas...but the more and more you watch casino you eventually realize omg this may be the greatest movie ever made lol.
LoganFam casino built off of everything that Goodfellas did right & went to the moon with it, they both are masterpieces! You almost can’t watch one without thinking about watching the other, in fact sometimes I get the 2 mixed up that’s how hand & hand I see them lol they should sell them as a double feature together

The Godfather takes the cake
I think this is Scorsese’s best film. The characters are incredibly layered and complex. Just thinking about where they all start and end and why. In particular Nicky Santoro tries to be this tough top boss gangster but he wears himself out because that’s not who he truly is. Everyone here is trying to be something that they’re not: Rothstein, a man fully in control of everything, Ginger, a rich trophy wife. But the city has made them into these caricatures of themselves. Especially with Nicky you see snippets of humanity and tragedy in his life. Watching his brother get beaten to death, that scene absolutely floors me every time I see it. I feel so bad for both of them even though you didn’t get that much from his brother in the film. And I love that Ace ends up right back where he started, left to ponder the last ten years of his life while still making money for the people who spared his life. Why did they spare him and how does this relate to his character’s journey? So much to ponder and see anew every time I see it.

Im pretty sure that the real life mobster that Ace is based on, Frank Rosenthal, became an informant for the feds and gained witness protection. Much like Henry Hill in Goodfellas. SO i think its safe to assume thats what happened to Ace as well

He was never in witness protection but definitely had the feds watching out for him
Casino is a fantastic crime film from Martin Scorsese I think it’s kind of underrated. I don’t see a lot of people talk about it as much as his others, to me it’s just as good as Goodfellas.
I prefer Goodfellas but Casino is way up there!

I partly understand and simultaneously don't understand why Casino is overshadowed by Goodfellas. The same main actors, released just 4-5 years later and on the surface....a mob film. Goodfellas was a mob film through and through. But Casino, is largely a crime drama with the mob as a supporting character. They're nothing alike at all and that's what surprised me the most. Both great films in their own right. At some points during Casino I found myself more invested in the story than Goodfellas ngl.
I think Casino is a better story than Goodfellas, but Goodfellas overall the better movie.

Casino beats Goodfellas because it doesn't just have the mob/human relationship stuff, but also the history of one of America's most interesting cities. The lighting, set design, wardrobe, soundtrack are perfect, it's just a beautiful film across the board, with some great acting from Stone and Woods. The opening titles by Saul Bass are beautiful. A truly epic film that had me engrossed all the way through.

With De Niro it could only be a film. If it's a mafia film and Scorsese is directing it, I already know it's a masterpiece, Casino, Goodfellas, The Departed and The Irishman prove that.
Without a doubt, one of Martin Scorcese's best films! Bringing together all the characteristic elements of the director's cinematography and featuring a great performance from the cast, "Casino" is a film that, despite its long duration, never appears to be tedious or slow, but maintains the viewer's constant attention at a steady pace. frantic and an interesting way of telling the story.
Firstly, I would like to mention the cast's performance, which, as previously mentioned, is great in this film. The performances of De Niro, Pesci and Sharon Stone are "fitted", competently, with the respective characteristics of their characters and the differences and similarities presented between them throughout the story.
Secondly, it is also essential to highlight the script, which, as usual, follows Scorcese's style of telling stories of this type. The narration of the characters throughout the course of events and the perspective of each one regarding the facts narrated, the intense and frenetic pace with which the film is presented, the drugs and excessive drinking, the fickle and interesting characters and, above all, , the "brutality" of the love and hate relationships between those involved in the story and the tragic way in which their respective destinies are decided, from which, despite all the money and luxury with which they lived their lives, they all end up ruined, dead or simply back to “square one”.
Furthermore, the film also provides an interesting perspective on the relationships, during the 70s and 80s, between the mafia and the Las Vegas casinos, detailing the entire structure of organized crime in a competent way and very similar to the way the film itself director had previously done in "Goodfellas" (although, in this case, there was no mention of casinos, but only the Italian mafia itself).
The cast is phenomenal, Sharon Stone puts on a show and Pesci doesn't fall behind, totally devoted to the character. Scorcese's spectacular direction is undeniably sensational. However, I felt exhausted during the film due to the excessive narration along with the dynamism of the editing and the information presented to us. Consequently, I believe I didn't understand some fragments of the story.
While watching, I drew parallels to "Raging Bull" the whole time and probably would to "Goodfelas" as well if I had ever watched it. It reminded me of films like "Revolver", "Breaking the Bank" and even a little of "The Godfather".
Thus, "Casino" is another excellent film by Scorcese about the mafia and bringing together all the great qualities and characteristics that mark the director's career. Recommended!

Goodfellas is that instant satisfaction of the characters and spicy direction. Casino is more slow burn. Cinematic and moody. Kind of a movie you can hang out with. Like Jackie Brown.
This is my favorite movie of all time. The characters were more complex.
Yes, it is true there are people who just go on and on in the same vicious, self destructive cycles. These can be addiction, abuse, or other forms of self-harm. But there are also people who break away from these. With the right community (and a damn good therapist) it actually happens

This was easily my second favorite Scorsese movie besides Gangs of New York. I really enjoyed your breakdown. Also I do like how everyone is layered especially Nikky as terrible as the man can be he showed humanity he gave and showed leniency to the people working for hum he tipped the people that tipped him off. He made sure to get on a goon gambling his families money away and still give him money to pay the family bills. And he tried to be a loving father to his son all very empathetic things he could be charismatic but at the same time would not blink before bashing in someone's head

Among all gangsta movies, this one shows the journey to the fall in the characters’ own narration. Its also got the great humour about it. Its treated lightly and thats what makes it unique and watchable many a times.
After watching good fellas my sister recommended Casino and I must say this film here kept me on my toes wondering which decision would be the downfall of the main characters

@Planet Rewind I’d say it’s when De Niro’s character escaped the car bomb. Everyone else got picked off and he made it out. Similar to how Henry escaped his dance with death by turning on the family
But if they had the same director I’d say goodfellas is my favorite. For some reason I read “scene”instead of *film* lol
@@CollinMac96 haha was wondering then but scene is fine, my favourite is Joe pesci and his brothers death, its insanely brutal and somewhat sad. I actually think Hugo is up there with his best films.

Nice work! I was born in Chicago and this story is well known among people who enjoy the history of the outfit in film. One of the most brutal scenes too. yuck. well, it's an accurate representation of the people who now run major businesses that are considered legit. Behind every fortune there's crime they say. What I love about these actors especially Joe Pesce,(not sure how to spell Pesce, hope I'm right) is that they talk how these guys actually talked. It's super realistic if Joe Pesce did it, and he's known for amazing adlibs.
I'll take your word there, that world and what goes on has always fascinated me, and I agree some say pesci overacts for me I always thought it would be accurate to those sort of real life people
Great review always Jim! I love this movie so much! It’s my second favourite of Martin Scorsese movies! It’s just everything that I want and got it’s got fantastic cast/characters and such engaging story and great brutal violence and style of gangsters genre! I love seeing Robert De Niro in a different kind of performance and role that were normally used too so it was nice to see different type of role! While people will say Repair she’s character is just a rehash from Goodfellas but I feel like Joe Pesci really stands out here more than Goodfellas believe it or not even though he is fantastic in that movie as well! I love the vibe of Casino in general I learned a lot that I never knew before about Casinos! It’s just a pure brilliant absolutely delight phenomenal film that I would love to see in the big screen! I actually prefer this 2 'Goodfellas' which I also love! I think probably because I saw it before 'Goodfellas' In fact it was the 1st Scorfilm I saw in the cinema although I had seen 'Cape Fear' on VHS!x
i don't think that's the best martin scorsese movie (not better than goodfellas) but it's a really good narrative about rise and downfall, corruption, regret ... only good movies does that. the camera movements were definitely perfect. joe pesci, robert deniro and shanon stone's acting were stunning, the scene where sam and nicky have an argument in the living room (before the desert scene) shows what is acting and we don't see that nowadays! besides all that casino is an amazing movie and i loved it ♡
It does seem to be a theme Scorcese always return to, he does seem determined to let us know that in the end crime doesnt pay

I really appreciate hearing your personal journey from liking Goodfellas more, to fully appreciating Casino as you got older and had more life experiences, and how the emotional core of the film between the three leads is what makes it so truly great. I have always loved this film, and been annoyed by how often I hear people talking about Goodfellas and ignoring Casino... because Goodfellas is, ultimately, a fun boy's club that rises and falls, with any female characters on the periphery and no true emotional core like Casino has. You broke it down and described that excellently, there is nothing I can add to what you said. Without Sharon Stone's performance the film wouldn't exist, wouldn't be as great as it is; I didn't know she had won best actress for it, that made me very happy to hear, even as someone who stopped caring about the academy awards in a very absolute way after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was relegated to best foreign film, and stupid ass Gladiator was given Best Picture over it, lol. I really love The Departed for similar reasons to Casino, even if it doesn't have as strong a female lead character, it still has that wonderful personal contrast between the two main characters, with many layers of irony that feels like a further evolution of Scorsese.

In Scorsese gangster movies, there's always a relatively benign gangster who's the central character. An intelligent guy who should really know better, but he can't help being dragged in. Charley in Mean Streets; Henry in Goodfellas; Ace in Casino.

Hi Jim literally just finished watching this. I havent seen it since it came out in the cinema. I loved it. Was it as good as good fellas not quite for me it's not as compelling in my opinion however seeing more of De Niro is one thing I liked more than good fellas. I loved the cinematography and the soundtrack was incredible. Raging Bull is still my absolute favourite American film of all time to me.
Think it goodfellas equal, different pacing and friendships on collision course & like most Scorsese a strong element of betrayal...

While ,'Casino' was a GREAT movie, no it wasn't better than 'Goodfellas', & certainly wasn't Scorsese's 'best picture'- not with other films like 'The Irishman', 'Mean Streets', & 'Raging Bull'.

How did Ace avoid being arrested? How was Nicky able to be killed instead of arrested? Did I miss something with this movie? I didn't like it as much as most of you. To me its like a 6 out of 10. Wayyyyy too much narration, especially in the beginning. I had too many "why would you do that" moments by various characters in this movie.
Oh dont get me wrong, sometimes I get very frustrated with the actions of Ginger in this movie, even if you are a self destructive person and prone to mistakes, when she KEEPs going back to this horrible guy with absolutely no benefits whatsover to gain, I remember puling my hair out. Sadly it is quite accurate to real life though... people act illogically soooo often
