In my mind, Morrie's murder is the real turning point in the story, because for the first time Henry's authority as a near-omniscient narrator is undermined--he thinks he's saved Morrie, tells the audience this, and in the very next scene Morrie is killed anyway. The narrative, at that point, gets completely away from him as his downward spiral accelerates.

Great movies have great ironies: In Goodfellas we see Henry who adopts his mob family over his real one, but he never truly belongs among the mobsters. He doesn’t have what it takes to be a true gangster: when they kill a made man, Henry is there, but never participates in the actual beating and killing; he only (ironically) does the dirty work of digging the grave. When they have to dig up the corps, Henry literally doesn’t have the stomach for it as he has to stop and vomit, while the other two make jokes about eating peppers and sausages. A stark contrast. Throughout the movie, we see Henry as a thug, but never a true gangster. Among psychotic man, he is always the voice of reason, somehow trying to control a given situation with reason and by doing so, clearly showing that he doesn’t have what it takes in a world where everything is solved with violence. In fact, we never see Henry ever killing anyone, nor even in a fist fight. When everything is said and done, he turns on his family and disappears. He calls the rest of us schmucks, but we see him as the quintessential schmuck. Martin Scorsese, throughout his gangster movies, always demonstrates that the mob are ultimately bozos in a circus who kill or ditch each other on their way down.

The movie shows how the Mafia like to think of themselves as family. But what the young naive Henry mistook for a family was in fact a business. Jimmy wasn't afraid to kill his "family" when it benefitted him, Paulie had no problem abandoning his "family" in their need. It was all about the money. I think that's part of what drove Henry to betray them

If they were going to give him one it should have been for taxi driver in the late 70s or raging bull in 80 lol raging bull is literally a masterpiece, it’s literally in the top twenty of greatest films ever. It’s literally perfect, not one editing mistake in that film. Think about that, they gave a cartoon character an Oscar and not Martin Scorsese until the departed which is at the bottom of his films. Being they were the correct age for the time sequence Lorraine suggested they use them and Scorsese agreed. Pesci was great in this film but was more deserving of an Academy Award for his performance in JFK. Also, Spider didn't play a prank on Tommy (at least not in the scene he is shot in the foot) If you watch the scene, several guys tell Spider what they want to drink, one guy says "I'm fine" Spider thinks Tommy says that and that why he doesn't bring him anything to drink which in turn starts all the trouble. I'm not trying to nitpick. Excellent analysis.

Thank you for addressing that NY Post article, I thought it was absolutely ridiculous! I am a woman and Goodfellas and Casino are my favorite films of all time! I love Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci's characters! I behave very similar to Tommy (I share his temper) and I able to identify with his character. That scene where Tommy, Henry and the rest of the crew are laughing, discussing their problems, is very similar to how I hang out out with my best friends, whom are also female. Also, I LOVE the soundtrack!!!!!

Another crumbling moment was when Karen secretly visited Jimmy in the third act and he tried to have her killed, but she caught on to that. It seemed as such a naive move, but goes to show how little he thinks of this woman, trying the bare minimum to take her out. He underestimated her, and kept playing this fake role to his demise.

"And all of their daughters were named Marie".
This film is one of the greatest of all time; from the music to narration to cinematography, I love this movie. The movie did the book "Wiseguys" justice, painting a picture that not everything is not what it seems.
The glorified violence, pious greed, and merciful theft sucked me in. I'm right there with the action getting sucked into the nuanced music placement per scene and the carefulness of each scene. Martin should have won this back in 1990 but I was only 3 when this movie came out. I appreciated this film sometime as a teenager and I can recite lines from the film from the film.
It's obvious that you deserve what you get when you get what you deserve. This is not a negative or positive critique. However, it shows the lengths of obtaining what we want most in our lives only coming close to really deserving it. Are we ever deserving of the lifestyle we deem worthy of obtaining? I think this is one trope that is missed often (the narrator of this video touches upon it briefly in the beginning when Henry is a teen). We feel for Henry because we think/know he deserves the American Dream that ultimately becomes his American Nightmare. The feeling of belongingness closes the gap of this deservedness.
It is this reason among many others that I love this movie. It examines so much of our own capacity, capability, and culpability with the people we most associate.

Really well done analysis mate hats off to you. Goodfellas is my favourite film and love listening to others peoples take on what transpires in the movie. Some minor corrections that I feel I have to make however.... The man who approaches pauly about needing help in the resteraunt isn't a waiter, he likely owns the place or is involved heavily in its management. In the scene where Jimmy is attacking Maurey asking for his money, Henry isn't laughing because he genuinely enjoys the violence, but as a conpensatory factor to appear unfazed by it in the eyes of Jimmy, he wishes to be seen as someone who is impressed by the violence, but the character inherently is different from the others and sees violence as a part of the lifestyle, not as something he finds funny or enjoyable. Lastly spider isn't playing a prank on Tommy, he clearly is just simple minded and got confused with the guys orders.... Other than that great job mate really impressed! Keep it up!

There are many good points here but the one biggest problem i could see is when you state that Henry is is losing his love for the Mafia, but this simply isnt true because Henry states that his biggest problem when leaving the life is that he didnt want to leave the life, he still loved the life. But over all this is a good essay on this film, One of my favorite things about this film is how many different ways it can be interpreted. Ive watched this film to many times to count and i still get the same feeling of wow everytime i watch it.

That's your opinion, I like Godfather better, that movie is just out of the world, keep in mind that's like the first classic I watched, but I ain't going to lie the first time I watched it was slow but the second time it was amazing.
