To me, the genius of Scorsese's gangster movies is that the style is the substance. The frantic, chaotic nature of his films emphasize how brutal and repugnant the nature of the gangster really is.
The traditional gangster movie, like the godfather, was always depicted in a very Shakespearian way. The rise and fall and betrayals were always given extreme gravitas. This style choice, whether intentional or not, glamourized the gangster to the audience. Michael was a cunning strategist. Vito was the noble man of the people.
With Scorsese's gangster films, everything is presented in such a chaotic and darkly humorous manner that you lose the allure. There are no Michaels, Vitos or Toms in Scorsese's gangster movies. Just Sonnys and Fredos. The violence is more brutal. The clothes and decor are tacky. More importantly all the relationships are toxic.

"The Godfather" is *not* a traditional Gangster Movie. This is precisely the reason it completely transcended the genre and is included in almost everybody's list of the top movies of the 1970s--which is spectacular decade for movies.

I think it handles its themes much more maturely than Goodfellas. It has a more singular tone, and I legitimately prefer the Joe Pesci of Casino over the Joe Pesci of Goodfellas. Also, no other movie uses "The House of the Rising Sun" better.

Weirdly I find myself returning to Casino more often. But I think Goodfellas is by far the superior film.

Casino is vastly different ,not really a mob film but the story of " Lefty Rosenthal" and also very much a Las Vegas story of those times.

This is easily my fav Scorsese movie. I love it more than Goodfellas. I think it's much more complex and nuanced. I like the performances better, the story. The sense of betrayal. I just think there's more to mine. It's messy but I think it's mess is apart of what Scorsese is going after.
“Goodfellas” is the better movie, but I find “Casino” to be much more watchable.

I always viewed Casino as not so much a story about gangsters, but about how people wind up alone. De Niro tries to be as close to "normal" as a Vegas guy can be, but everyone else around him self-destructs and fail to take him with them.
This is, unquestionably in my opinion, the best film of all time. The mixed reaction this film has been given has absolutely stunned me, reviews range from the worst film people have ever seen to the most impressive they have ever seen. This is of course the most underrated film of all time and not enough credit has been given to Scorsese, De Niro, pesci, stone and even the supporting cast including frank Vincent. The reason for much of this films criticism is its comparisons to goodfellas. This is not goodfellas or a goodfellas inspired film! (despite Nicholas peliggi's involvement). De niro and pesci surpass their performance in goodfellas with much to spare in this film. Pesci in particular has added more venom to his performance than seen in goodfellas (which was already as venomous as a venomous snake swimming around in venom).
Enough of this goodfellas talk, casinos finest quality is the development of the characters throughout the movie. The decade in which this movie covers allows Scorsese to work his magic and has time to brilliantly lay out this fascinating tale of the mob's control of a las Vegas casino...and the las Vegas streets. De niro is at his usual best which means long time movie partner Scorsese can direct with ease because nobody is better than De niro at his best. His performance is cool, calm and collected and his character is easily likable and understandable throughout. De niro's casual performance means it is down do pesci to take care of the more brutal parts of the movie, and he does this very well. Scorseses directing skills combined with De niro's fine acting and laced with pesci's raw power, not to mention a sprinkle of glitter on top in the form of Sharon stone, means there is no level on which this film does not deliver. the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.

Casino isn’t even close to the best Scorsese, let alone the greatest movie of all time. I fall in love with the art of filmmaking all over again every time I see this film. Every frame is drenched in Scorsese. If you want to know what a great director, DP and editor can bring to any script, good or bad, watch Casino.
I personally like this better than goodfellas. Casino is the spiritual sequel to goodfellas in my opinion. But there's something about this I enjoy more. I know I will get criticized for saying that, even though I love goodfellas also.
It's just an opinion. It's about your own taste. No one can even tell you one is "greater" than the other because ultimately it's just your opinion.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel Carlito's Way is a better companion piece to Scarface than Casino is to Goodfellas. That was much less a rehash and could be seen as an antithesis, even. To me, Scorsese's biggest weakness is his occasional need to be unnecessarily convoluted and tangential. Not all of his "pictures" are like that, but when they are - they're REEEALLY committed to it. When he exercises some brevity, his profundities hit harder. I would like to see a reversal of 95% of film makers' innate need for creating grand and elaborate visions. The question I would like to see get answered in mainstream film is "How minimal can we get while still retaining the qualities of a thoughtful and well produced film?"

Casino is a great film. I think it's one of Scorsese's best film in his resume. You really get a history of how these guys really operated illegally inside a casino. The main characters are very interesting and unforgettable. Scorsese uses a lot of filmmaking tools to draw the viewer in and lastly, it's really a sad tale of how they all (rightfully) fucked it all up. I agree with you on how Scorsese lacks interesting female characters/minorities but a filmmaker can't please everyone they just have to make the best film that they can
There’s a lot of Gilda (1946) in this film. I know Scorsese loves that one.
Obviously that's YOUR opinion, but Casino is a million miles away from GoodFellas not so much a mob film but more a film about Vegas and " Lefty " in those times.
Most professional critics seem to love it and it averages out at the 5th best film he ever made.
But as I said it's personal opinion, I actually prefer it to GoodFellas as I feel that's a film that's been made again and again " once upon a time in America " etc although it IS the best of the " passage thru life mob films "...
New viewer here and already a huge fan. I take your main critique of Casino very well, it's a very incisive point and I was tempted to agree, but IMHO the hypocrisy of Scorsese's opulence is baked into his aesthetic and part of what makes his movies compelling. From Charlie in Mean Streets onward his characters are entirely aware of the sin inherent in what they love. There's a line in an Ebert writing on Goodfellas that I love, I forget if it's the original review or where else it might be, in which the guilt of Scorsese's characters lies not the actions they commit, but that they would do them again.
The mans still has so much passion for film even at his age now

I think Traci Lords and Madonna were originally considered. Sharon Stone was marvelous in the role i thought. She is Vegas just like Don Rickles.

I just want to say, saying this exposes his weaknesses actually makes me appreciate him as an artist more. I've lived in Vegas for 20 years now and every old Vegas guy I've met has said this movie shows how old Vegas was more than anything because he focused a lot on just showing things.
In the context of mob films women are ancillary. And that is accurate.
Whenever i watch any gangster movie - no matter what film culture it's from, I always look out for two character archetypes :
whether the "molly" character (villain's girlfriend or wife) or the conflicted henchman (villain's top assassin or "insurance") is able to "snap out of it" and eventually redeem themselves and the rest of the story.
Your point about people viewing Scorsese as the 'mob guy' is definitely true, and comes up all the time whenever I talk about his films with friends and family, but one thing that's always baffled me about the criticism (not your criticism, but the basic "another GoodFellas" critique) levelled against Casino, The Departed and The Irishman, is that nobody ever dares to attack Ozu or Kurosawa on these grounds. Kurosawa made a ton of samurai films, and Ozu always made gentle family dramas in that same very specific style that he developed independent of the traditional cinematic approach pioneered by Griffith and, while I'm a huge fan of his, a lot of those films do feel very similar. Why is this the case? Because the critiques of Scorsese are never particularly nuanced and seem to mostly amount to: "he's just remaking GoodFellas".
I liked this movie but it's no Goodfellas.
I would love to see you review The Last Temptation of Christ.
The best part of that movie is the soundtrack which was expanded on the album. It was a very important project that had very real implications for connecting disparate top level musicians of the so called "world" genre.

I honestly always liked her performance. You actually get to hate her more than even Joe Pesci's character. At least he cared for his kids. She kidnaps and ties hers up! 😂

Love it, not as much as Goodfellas. I think that Goodfellas has a better narrative and the "rise and fall" structure feels more natural and logical. Casino on a technical level is better, and i love the story, characters, the acting is amazing, the 3 hour runtime never bothered me, but the major issue that i have with the film is the fall. Specially, the way that one of the characters practically reveals everything. It felt forced and not believable. Beyond that, i think it´s amazing and i would suggest checking it out.

This film is abour greed and how excess in everything leads to a downfall. Wolf of Wall St. Is similar though far less darker. Casino changes it's time after the vise scene and then we start to feel that everything is evaporating before our eyes. The joys of Vegas suddenly become joyless.

Cape Fear exposes Scorsese's weaknesses. Casino's 3 hours feels like 2, and Cape Fear's approach was "What if everything's on the surface"

@Tom Kretschmer I don’t see why they couldn’t cut from another angle it’s always bothered me. Not in any way that it ruins the movie but I would expect that from say Showdown In Little Tokyo or a Michael Winner film but Scorsese no way Jose.

The problem concerning "The Godfather" is that viewers forget that they are "identifying" with a violent criminal mob family.
Casino is one of my favorites from Scorsese body of work. Never had any problem with Sharon Stone performance. I think she is pretty convincing in this role and she creates an exact type of character.

3:45 I too feel this way about Gangs of New York as well. To me, the film showed the tribalistic nature of humanity but it never analyzed that tribalism or offered a perspective on it. Gangs then felt flat and one-dimensional to me. Sure the ending offers a conclusion to their tribalism but Scorsese doesn’t offer much else in the way of exploration of the theme
Totally agree. Scorsese is one of my favourites and I'm often hesitant to criticize him, but I did find it incredible that the same guy that made movies like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, managed to churn out Gangs of New York. It's a film with interesting and important themes ripe for exploration, like you mentioned, but just never goes there and often feels like a cookie-cutter blockbuster. If you told me Spielberg directed it, I'd believe you lol.
Casino is certainly not Goodfellas by any stretch.
Do they contain similar actors and directorial style? Sure.
Casino is a mature and reserved Scorcese. The details - from the script, cinematography, pace/texture, even costumes - in the film go far beyond the supposed 'flash or glorification' you've mentioned.
I heard Scorsese originally wanted Pacino to play the lead role. But because of scheduling he went back to De Niro. I think De Niro is great in the role, but maybe Pacino getting the part instead would’ve helped it feel a bit different than Goodfellas

I often find myself going "Yeah it's great, but it's just like ______!" and I wish I didn't.
as I get older I find myself having a much harder time defending the idea of decrying a truly good thing for being like something else. quality modern media should be cherished and valued, even if it's not always breaking new ground. it's like you said - most stories have been done before. or so we believe, anyway.
but when Scorsese leaves us - God help us, but it's got to be coming soon enough - I doubt we're going to be saying a whole lot about how he was repeating himself, here. the high quality of a thing can and should stand apart from what came before it.
I mean it wouldn’t be believable if De Niro lived a modest life in this movie. I think it’s natural for these characters to be gaudy it shows how their greed got the best of them they had to show the greed and opulence to make the movie believe-able and realistic to the characters

As a Beatles fan I’d compare Goodfellas with Sgt. Pepper and Casino with Magical Mystery Tour, and I happen to like MMT more.

Saw it at the cinema on a packed, first weekend. The scene in the desert, on the big screen brought out a huge laugh when they were revealed to be so small, compared to the desert. Great moment.
I have no argument with those who say Goodfellas is the better film, it probably is, but Casino is my favourite. I love the glitzy world, and I find De Niro’s protagonist more relatable than sleazy Liotta. I also think Pesci’s psychopath has more shades here - he’s a great dad who, after sticking ice picks in your balls and squashing your head like a melon, always gets home to make pancakes for his kid! ❤️
I like Sharon Stone as ginger. I thought she did a great job. It's an interesting thought experiment to consider who else could have possibly played that role. She would have been too young at the time the film was made but Juliet Lewis is somebody that might be interesting as Ginger.
I like Casino but its just an overblown version of GoodFellas.

A lot of well-articulated points - many of which I had not considered. I think it was easy for Scorsese to get caught up in the afterglow of Goodfella's success. To me, that seemed like a film where everything kinda just went right. One thing to consider from the perspective of the creator is how much that level of creative synchronicity can impact you and the people involved. I can only assume he wanted to recapture the experience - and you can tell he had a blast doing it. So while it may have very much revisited the ground that Goodfellas established - there is still an uninhibited joy and love of process that sits at the core of the film.
One of my favorite Scorsese movies, but GoodFellas is way better film.

Synecdoche, New York made me think about how I conduct myself and life my life. Casino and Goodfellas are both, for me, pure vouyeristic thrill. And despite any cautionary message, part of me still feels that being a gangster would be f*cking cool, I'll deal with the consequences later. That said, I think Scorsese recognises that too. That life does have an appeal to it.

With Casino, I never really got any sense of moral ambiguity, or a cautionary tale or anything, but rather a snapshot of how a universally famous and successful city/establishment in America was once run by criminal overlords. A bit like Washington DC lol
Scorcese says his ""The Age of Innocence" is his most violent film.
Scorsese isn't aware enough of the fact that film is always a manipulative art. That's really well put and might very well be the reason why I struggle with most of his work.
I often wondered if the real-life gangsters that were portrayed in Goodfellas ever crossed paths with the real-life gangsters of Casino during one of their Vegas trips.
Some interesting points, but I think Casino is a fun, fantastic odyssey! I completely disagree with what you say about Sharon Stone though ! I think she’s impeccable in the film. She personifies Ginger. Love Don Rickles also !

Scorsese has only made 6 gangster films he was involved with Boardwalk Empire and The Wolf Of Wall Street is not a gangster film which people seem to forget bc it’s tone and pace is so similar to Goodfellas and Casino, Boxcar Bertha isn’t a gangster film either and Mean Streets has gangsters I only loosely consider it a gangster. Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs Of New York, The Departed and The Irishman are full on gangster flicks
To be honest, sharon was already 36 or 37 when they made the movie.
This movie is really the turning point for Scorsese where he stopped writing his own stuff and just leaned into adapting books about criminals. I also agree he really started blurring the lines with over romanticizing these gangster types. I would love to hear your thought on Mean Streets, that’s my favorite of his mafia movies where it’s more honest and doesn’t lionize the characters.
Wow. I usually don't disagree with you but my read on Sharon Stones performance is the EXACT opposite of yours. Her vile, venomous, manipulative role was played to the point of me actually hating her.
Scorsese is my favorite director, and crime films are my favorite genre. (I recently just finished Sopranos in like two and a half weeks.) That said, Casino does very little for me. I was surprised by the Sharon stone criticism. I started watching casino when I was so youngish that I’d never have even thought to criticize any of the acting really. Yr criticism helped me think through something that never occurred to me until it made me disagree w u. I say stone, maybe just by accident via not great acting or what have u, is very good here at being a presence that is always a beat behind whatever facade she is trying to put on at any given time. To me, and I only just realized it now, this made the movie so much more realistic, as this is how many people often are: slightly disjointed from themselves, as it were. I didn’t see over acting, I saw the stone character clumsily over acting when trying to get what she wanted. It always made the movie very documentary like to me: the stone character’s end was no cartoon
I would have loved to see Jennifer Jason Leigh in this performance or Julian Moore.

I love Casino!! It’s my favorite movie. It’s my favorite Scorsese movie. I can recite every line of dialogue in the film. Obviously, the film has a lot of dialogue. Scorsese himself has said of the characters in the film that they are in hell. That’s why at the end of the title sequence the body is falling from the sky and it’s falling into the flames of hell. We as the audience are in hell with them. I personally love that Scorsese makes these sprawling, epic films on such a grand scale. No other director can do that the way he can. For me, the film is very visual. I love that Scorsese made the characters in Casino essentially very unlikeable. He’s done that in other movies too, but in Casino I just think he takes it to a whole other level. I don’t think Scorsese was trying to top Goodfellas. There are aspects of Casino that are told in a very different way than Goodfellas is.
Interesting review. I saw Goodfellas as a 15 year old, and it instantly became my favorite film. I keenly looked forward to Casino, and I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I was kind of bored. At the time, I didn't have interest in analyzing the experience, but I think the difference for me is that Goodfelllas emotionally engaged me. In my own way, I was able to identify with the strange friendships, loyalties, betrayals, struggles. Whereas Casino left me completely cold. 'Wolf Of Wall Street' falls somewhere in between. I enjoyed it. Won't ever watch it again though.
Very interesting perspective on the film. I haven't seen this one since my first viewing, so this review will certainly play in the back of my head
When I watched Casino I felt like the whole film was an introduction to a film, I remember after about an hour of having an expectation for the introduction to end and the film to begin properly that this was how the film was.

That scene when Sally is like, "All I want is a normal life." Her vulnerability and acknowledgment of repression, truly one of the great scenes of the 90s, and a theme I would often think about in the shower with my buddies after lax practice
What are your thoughts on Taxi Driver? Personally I think it's Scorsese's best film and maybe De Niro's as well, and it's the exact opposite of everything you had to say about Casino. It has alot more to say and more subtlety, not to mention it's an outsider/existentialist classic. The CBP Channel called it the ultimate doomer movie.
On first watch i found it overly violent. Will revist it soon.
Wow. I wouldn't say Sharron Stone was that bad, just badly written in parts. I really like Casino but mostly for entertainment value. It definitely leans too heavily on needle drops and montages.

Appreciate your review and opinion of the film. I happen to think, and probably a lot of people who love the gangster film genre, That Casino is/was one of Scorsece's great films. With Martie, it always feels, his approach was a more down to earth, almost realistic depiction of this lifestyle, in all its brutality and all. As oppose to the operatic feel of say Godfather. Or what Scarface was. Casino was like Martie getting to tell some of the Vegas organized crime history and of course doing it on a nice budget, with incredible costume and cinematography. I see you didn't mention costume, Deniro's wardrobe alone is just like, I don't think they ever dressed him that bold and flashy ever again in any film. And it looked incredible, I mean he was in the character. You barely speak on the character work, that has been done. I mean its not raging bull as you say... where the performances and the black and white and the tone, its a different feel. I mean Casino is kind of like Tarantino, or even Woody Allen, Wes Anderson. These type of directors are heavily stylistic and tend to return to the same genre time and again, and just sort of add layers to the kinds of topics they love, and have a sinergy with their audience. The heartbeat of the film is Ginger of course. And I think too, Pesci was great as the unpredictable hard headed, hit man type of character. So I mean I agree it was like a more expensive Good Fellas sequel, but, because of the performances, the setting, and the costume and cinematography, its stands a lone as a really entertaining movie, that does pull you in some emotional directions. Deniro and Stone's scenes are great. Pesci's Napoleon-like menace is palpable. Fucking Don Rickles is in the movie. I mean also because of the time frame of some of Scorcese's films its like he's also peaking in and telling about different times in American History. Thanks for letting me rant on here. I actually met a woman who went to school with and was good friends with Ginger's daughter, not the one in the movie though. The real-life Ginger had a daughter before she met the real-life Ace.

Both movies only have mildly similar themes, but I got them mixed up just because they both came out in 1995!
This is one reason why I love your channel: you aren't afraid to criticize the masters. There are certain filmmakers that people seem to think are off-limits to criticism, but no filmmaker is perfect.
