Nice report, I agree that it's worth paying the extra for the additional space, comfort and onboard service. Sending belated birthday wishes, hope you had a good one! 🚂

I've had a love affair with train's since i was a kid, managed to get to the UK a few times during the 1980's & 90's when i was in my mid 20's plus., back then it was on British Rail Intercity 125. Mum and i traveled around the UK a lot, we purchased a britrail pass through our travel agent back here in New Zealand.,which was valid for 30 day's.

Thats not a good price for first class IMO. I went from Madrid to Sevilla in Spain first class last year, and the ticket was £90 return for a journey that was the best part of 330 miles, much further than the Newcastle to London trip. And its a much faster train. I also only booked the ticket three weeks in advance. It would have been cheaper if I was in a position to book earlier. For some reason we have less reliable trains in this country that are much slower than our European counterparts and more expensive.
