To follow up on what some others said here, even some non-foil basic lands can be around a dollar each in good condition (for example the odyssey plain with the thunderstorm in the background)
When I got back into Magic, I discovered that I still had a box of old commons from Prophesy. Turns out it had 6 Rhystic Studies in it which used to be a totally junk card back in the day.
yeah commander has completely changed the game it's kind of crazy the biggest driving point for the price of a lot of cards is a non-60-card format that doesn't even have an official tournament format imagine telling someone that like 10-15 years ago
I was given a collection of “bulk” cards from a friend who used to play 20 years ago, it’s crazy the value of some of them! The majority are still worthless sadly
@@deathbean1 Plus it’s a highlander format. A format where you can’t use multiple copies of any card has some more dramatic impacts on many card values, than many formats that yearn for 3-4x as many copies per deck.
Another neat trick with reconnaisance that you didn't mention: you can untap your creatures in the end combat segment, after they have already dealt damage, because they don't lose their status as attacking creatures until after the entire combat step is done. So all of your creatures now have pseudo vigilance.
It's a neat trick that caused an errata to be written by Matt Tabak in 2014 to prevent it, but it was an errata which subsequently also prevented you from using Reconnaissance's ability outside of your first combat. The errata completely changed everything about the card in a way that "fixed" the narrow rules window by making the card almost completely useless. Thankfully they ultimately didn't stick the with errata.
I think Lord of the Void got a big bump from the printing of Be'lakor in the 40k Commander precon, where every Demon deals damage equal to its power to any target on ETB, so this gets to be removal as well as just what the card says. I also suspect that some people misread it and think LotV triggers when it deals the 7 damage to face.
It's played a decent amount in commander and it being colorless helps a lot for that kind of effect. The Command Zone podcast/Game Knights also really helped popularize it in commander too, so that probably gave it a big price boost.
For me, Lord of the Void has always held a special place in my heart due to commander. I got smacked by one that took an Ulamog from me in the same game it took a Fyndhorn Elves lol. The randomness is pretty fun, and it can be a good way to ensure you stay around the same power level as everyone else.
I have a friend who is a very casual commander player and he LOVES playing the weird jank big tribal decks. Demons, Dragons, Leviathans, a true Timmy. And I've played against a couple of people like him. Theres a pretty big market for decks built around big durdly creatures.
I was given a bunch of old cards when I was a teen, put most of them in a box for safekeeping as I didn't think they were very good. One of them was a Revised Wheel of Fortune. That's in a hardsleeve now.
Arboreal Grazer is a fun one. The regular card is literally a couple of cents... the foil? 10 euros! it's like a 500x increase for foil. That would be a great video. The biggest mark-up for a foil.
this series has already earned me 5€ off of a Dragon Tempest so I'm always happy to see more. I've been considering searching for some Mayhem Devils I have lying around every now and then but now I finally decided to go for it. Also picked out some Dovin's Vetos while I was at it, which also sits at a respectable 1,34€
I agree 100% with you on the 50% rule on foils brother! I always wanted a Gaeas Cradle in foil and when everything jumped up during 2019 I purchased it because it was 1400 while the non foil just jumped to 750 - 800 and now it is worth much more. Not planning on selling it because it makes me smile, but wanted to tell you how on point you are!
Reconnaissance is even better than you guys mentioned. The entire combat phase goes Beginning of Combat Declare Attackers Declare Blockers First Strike Damage, and combat damage triggers regular damage and combat damage triggers End of Combat. in the End of Combat step, you can use reconnaissance to untap all your attackers after they've done damage, essentially giving them vigilance
Lord of the Void works in Commander with Kalia, Satoru Umezawa, reanimator decks (it's highlander so you need more than one good targert, and Griselbrand is banned), and all kind of decks that cheat big creatures into play. Once you work around the cost, 7/7 flying and the ability to keep cheating even more creatures is pretty good. Don't think I'd pay $15 for it, but it's definitely something I'd want to play on some of my decks if I had it laying around.
Lord of the Void works with ninjutsu like Satoru Umezawa and Prosper Tome-Bound, so that's probably why. I picked up a copy or two for around $5 a few years ago for some commander decks.
@@orian3638 Oops. You're right. I did not fully read Lord of the Void, even though it was on screen. I was just going off memory of it, but I was thinking you cast the card without paying mana. Thinking about it more now, I wouldn't be surprised if sneak attack style decks have seen an increase with the introduction of the Blitz mechanic in Streets of New Cappena where it might see some play, alongside ninjutsu and the classic commander Kaalia.
@@Groovemancer yes it's probably the case however ~15€ is still a surprising price for such a niche use Especially cause there are way better things to cheat out The card is cool and the art is gorgeous tho

Yeah, It sees a LOT of play in cEDH, powering LED combos. You fetch Lion's Eye Diamond, Underworld Breach, and Sevinne's Reclamation and go ahead and win the game, obviously.
My 2 favorite bulk purchase had 2x Triumph of the Hordes, foil Sacred Nectar 7th Edition and Eldrazi Temple, Constant Mists STH, 2x Liliana's Caress M11 and Spellstutter Sprite all 4+E, among cards, as well as bunch of other 1+E cards all for 40ish E... also for 50E bought Subjective Reality Commander deck, sleeved, and bunch of "bulk" cards (sleeved too) with it, which had Kalitas and Kor Haven expedition among them
The dork myr cycle from mirrodin (golden, silver, leaden, iron, and copper) are around 30 cents normally, but the foil versions skyrocket by 3325% to around 13 dollars
I was building a commander deck that relies on exiling and/or stealing creatures and was frustrated because It's a great thing to cheat out and does the stealing thing. a great addition but it was $17 at the time and that was too much for my cheap ass.
The worst thing I discovered after coming back to Magic after over 15 year is that i gifted probably 30 force of wills from alliances to random people when I stopped playing back then
Actually reconnaissance is mainly used in commander to give sudo vigilance rather than to just attack carelessly As you can still target and untap creatures after damage at the end of combat
Lord of the Void has a few things going for it, largely for EDH: Demon creature type, sometimes for tribal, sometimes for Kaalia Three devotion for black Legal in a format where Griselbrand is banned Nontargeted reanimation Exiling 6-7 cards (which, incidentally, should also remove Approach of the Second Sun after it was cast the first time) Nonlegendary allows multiples including Clone effects. Attacking with it on turn 4-5 even in EDH is not unreasonable due to ways to cheat it into play, especially reanimation.
I play Lord of the Void in my Commander Kaalia of the Vast deck. For this Deck it is an absolute powerhowse. Imagine Attacking with Kaalia in round 3 to 4 and put this onto the battelfield. Then you end up with 3 creatures in turn 3 to 4 and exiled 7 cards from your opponent. I like this card.
Lord of the void is a really good creature in Commander. For strategies that cheat expensive creatures from the graveyard it is a great creature because has evasion (flying), is a big beater and has a great upside if it hits. The fact that is not legendary and this way you can create tokens. I have seen this in several golgari, grixis and mono black decks to great effect =)
Pitiless Plunderer was my highlight in that regard recently. RIX uncommon starting at 6€ (english version) boggles my mind. Thanks Commander and treasures being pushed more and more I guess. Also grabbed some Mayhem Devils from my bulk box to sell them off - cool video format!
Lord of the Void you can easily cheat it out in a black reanimator deck and then you either enchant it or equip it to give it double strike since it's effect is on combat damage
Lord Of The Void may have seen a spike due to the reprint of ShadowBorn Apostle's in Double Masters. Also is probably used in some Kaalia Of The Vast Commander decks? Would make sense
Lord if the pit exiles cards, so there is something to do with eldrazi stuff from exile. You can cheat it with kahlia, sneak attack, reanimate it, recently you can ninjutsu it from your hand. It steals your opponent's stuff so in commander you often end up with a second huge creature immediately on the battlefield. Back in the days it was one of my only big fat demon to play in commander and it was 2$ and i swapped it for something more impactfull when i could. I don't have it anymore and it was a big suprise when i wanted to get a new one for my satoru umezawa deck when i saw 15$ i was like "nah i will not pay that much for a 7 mana demon lol"
Reconnaissance is a bomb IMO: There's a lot of instant spells that target attacking creatures, so being able to save your creatures from something like that is very valuable in eternal formats like commander, where you care about certain creatures
I love Lord of the Void in my Kaalia of the Vast commander because I can just cheat him out. I am glad I bought him some time ago for way less than 14€ though.
Lord of the Void would be insane on a Satoru Umezawa commander deck: play a Invisible Stalker, attack, use the ninjustsu ability to play the lord, get a free creature AND deal 7 damage. Great card for that specific very niche deck.
I used to work at a game store where someone brought in a bunch of old magic cards for a trade in and I don’t remember the name of the card but one of the cards in this big thing of bulk non foil was like 20 cents but the foil version was like $50 (witch is the version he had) and that was Insane to me, sadly my boss wanted me to hide that fact and price the card at like $1 and not mention it to the customer, hide it in with all the other cards in the pile but i refused to do that letting him know about it.
I know Lord of the void gained some extra traction recently because of Satoru Umezawa decks, for the free combat damage trigger, but came up earlier for Kaalia and cheating out large creature decks, as well as decks like Yuriko for it’s massive cost
I always look at the ratio non-foil and foil price. When a cardprise is rising and the price of the normal version is pretty close to the price of the foil version i pick the foil. Usually the foil price will spike up like crazy some time after.
That Last card is good in black green, so u can ramp into the high cost & mana fix if u need 3 black, then u can also give it trample easy with an enchantment that effects all creatures, Then it is good & u could even play around demons type yet I don't know how good a demon deck can be with out red, but I bet there are still some in black, as that deck is red black Last time I saw it
Lord of the Void is a staple in a Shadowborn Apostle (either mono black and WB Athreos) deck (commander) and Kaalia of the Vast (mardu) also commander.

The first test run of foil cards was mostly on an Exodus sheet so although not legitimate magic cards now, there are some extremely rare and valuable foil Exodus cards floating around. I wasn't sure if Reconnaissance was on the sheet or not but I was hoping you would say a foil price of 10,000 euros or something :D
One of the things that makes Reconnaissance expensive that hasn't been said is that it basically gives vigilance to all your creatures. At the end of combat every attacking creature ist still considered an attacking one
I honestly don't know why the Demon is so expensive but my guess would be that they're a lot of decks that just want to spam big creatures that do something like disrupt your opponents game plan and maybe stealing your opponents combo pieces helps towards that goal 🤷🏽♂️
I once sold off a random 10th edition foil shatter storm and used the money I got off of it to pick up Liliana the Last Hope. I was shocked it was worth like 30ish bucks at the time
Basal sliver: usually it's 2-10 cents, but the foil I have starts at almost 4 euros!! O.O I'm lucky to have it! and two random island and plains, both of them foil .. crazy!
many of my singles that i bought from a few years ago have quadrupled in price if not more, guess i have a good eye for cards that are good, mayne not in 60 card tourneys but in general
Lord of the void amazing.... i love it.... its about cheating it out.... i have a demon deck.... mono black.... with all the tutors and reanimate cards .... its is very easy to bring him out early
My first commander deck is tribal demons and it has lord of the void in it. It's just a cool Timmy card, a big scary flyer that can scare your opponents. Good Times!! But I'm still surprised at it's price.
Rhythm of the Wild is a 11€ foil Uncommon and still a respectable 2€ in non-foil. But don't get me started on Joraga Treespeaker. Over 30€ for the foil.
I opened the anime Wandering Emperor recently in a display and got the same - but in foil - a few packs later. Will hold onto them and hope the value rises!
Lord of the Void is a good Satoru Umezawa ninjutsu card. 4 mana to auto hit with it and get an opponents creature, after that it sticks around as a 7/7 flyer? Not too shabby
Historically I imagine Lord of the Void big because Kaalia spits it out for free and then you get a second creature for free right after. AS for the current trend, the new Warhammer set has Demon enablers pushing the whole creature type in the market.
I just found out that a card I thought was a crappy common was an old rare worth 60 euro. It's a repentant blacksmith from Arabian nights, and other than it's age, I have no idea why anyone would pay 60 for it. It's a 2 mana 1/2 with protection from red, that's it.
I've got a bontu the glorified masterpiece that is sadly worth much less than I figured. I hoped a newer set would make it more relevant and it did get a little boost with new cappena but I doubt it'll ever be the quintessential "money card" I'd be happy to part with it for £50 though to get a 40k deck because I'm a 40k player too.
Oh man, if basic forests ever take off like any of these I'll be set for life!
You joke but I just spent 20$ to get a bunch of a specific forest I liked.
I have a foil forest from Odyssey that has a market price of $5, the non-foil is $0.33. A markup of 1500%
Some old foil ones are worth a lot of money

This reminds me of when I got back into magic and discovered I had a primeval Titan and a protean hulk
I have it in my Radkos lord of riots deck, so it only cost 3 mana. lord of the void and other high mana cost that dont see much play made the cut.
I opened the anime Wandering Emperor recently in a display and got the same - but in foil - a few packs later. Will hold onto them and hope the value rises!
The price of the Demon is strange. I guess there is a theme in EDH where you try to play only your opponents cards but still, 14€ is high...
Lord of the Void is a good Satoru Umezawa ninjutsu card. 4 mana to auto hit with it and get an opponents creature, after that it sticks around as a 7/7 flyer? Not too shabby
Ninja decks enable Void Lord's player damage trigger
Cards that are surprisingly expensive?
All cards I tend to look up!
Last year i went through my old basic Lands and actually found 3 Euro Lands... I have no slightest idea how they got into my collection....
I play Lord of the Void in my Prosper Deck just cause I found it in my collection it fit the Theme and its fun to steal cards in Commander soooo
Skewer the Critics is a $1 common with a $23 foil wild
My guess is legacy burn plays a roll in that. Maybe modern burn too?
Lord of the Void is definitely a ninjutsu card or something to play in a Kaalia deck
Just bought cards for a Shadowborn Apostles deck and Lord of the Void along with Archfiend of Despair are making me question if I wanted to get them
Well, I have a couple of Phyrexian Dreadnought... those have a price trend of 80,13 €
Historically I imagine Lord of the Void big because Kaalia spits it out for free and then you get a second creature for free right after.
AS for the current trend, the new Warhammer set has Demon enablers pushing the whole creature type in the market.
Im in love with that toad tatoo
Thanks, I love it too 🥰
I just found out that a card I thought was a crappy common was an old rare worth 60 euro. It's a repentant blacksmith from Arabian nights, and other than it's age, I have no idea why anyone would pay 60 for it. It's a 2 mana 1/2 with protection from red, that's it.
There are 0 english foil mayhem devils on sale for 14€ or under at this time. Actual price is more like 18-22€.
Yup ! I bought my foil playset this summer on Cardmarket for 76€.
A lot of the Demon creatures gained a bump in popularity when Shadowborn Apostle got reprinted in Double Masters 2022
I’m now putting Lord of the Void in my Satoru Umezawa commander deck to cheat him out and cast opponents big creatures for 2 blue black (4CMC)
I run lord of the void with elvish piper and play it for 1 green and tap, I run with Vito, thorn of the Dusk Rose and collosification
Lifebane hound, almighty brushwagg, giant/ titanic growth, unlikely aid and some other huge creatures
I have a NM lord of the void foil that I thought about selling when it's price went up a little bit. But it's now 36 euro !?
