Gaby's last win against Arantxa. This loss was also a sign that perhaps Arantxa had peaked too early for the French Open. She'd had a great Spring, beating Steffi twice and winning 4 tournaments. Many people thought she was a big favourite at the French Open that year but she didn't win another tournament all year after Hamburg. As for Gaby, she was in the slump that didn't see her win a tournament from May 1992 until November 1994.
@th8257 😢And a few short months later........in January 1995, Sabatini would win her last tournament, in Sydney, by defeating Lyndsey Davenport. Her outfit that she wore, when she played her last professional tennis match in 1996, is on display at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, in Newport, Rhode Island (U.S.A.). I was very lucky to see it when I visited it.
No creo poca gente en la wta tour tiene ese aura de buena persona y querida creo que hasta los alemanes no les cae mal la figura de Gaby sobre todo xq Steffi la quiere no la odia
I’ve always wondered if part of Gaby’s title-less drought was fear of getting stabbed by one of Steffi’s crazy fans. She had even more recent success against Graf than even Seles (albeit not in the most important tournaments, unlike Monica). Had she continued her winning ways against Steffi, perhaps she would have been the next target. Steffi really had the wind under her wings after Hamburg 1993.
Doesn’t explain not winning a title from May 92 to April 93 when Monica was still on tour . The fact is she had a dip in form and after the French 93, a major drop in confidence. But to her credit , she took the masters in 94 as her last great win. Fabulous player but never comfortable being a front runner and would not handle being number 1 in the world . Capable but she didn’t want it
That's a bizarre theory. There's a recent interview with her on a tennis podcast, and she talks about she was basically sick of it all. She was a very complicated character, and found the tennis world incredibly draining. It clearly wasn't anything at all to do with fear of being stabbed. Given her limited enjoyment of the tennis world, Gaby had long been a very patchy player, with a real pattern of playing well in the spring, and then fizzling out from about mid May to August. In both 1991 and 1992, she didn't win a tournament after Rome in May. I think the real break for her came after she lost to Seles at the 1992 french open. It was virtually the last time anybody talked about her as a grand slam contender. She took a long time off after Wimbledon 1992 and didn't play again until the US Open. At the 1993 Australian open she said she had a bad virus which made her ill, and years later it became known that she suffered from Thalassemia, a form of anaemia that can leave someone with limited energy. Then came that loss to Mary Joe at the French Open and it really killed a lot of her remaining appetite for the game. By the time she retired in 1996, she really had run out of any desire to continue
@@jboogie6921 it's batshit crazy and not plausible in the slightest. Gaby talked recently on the tennisworthy podcast about her career and how she always had a very ambivalent relationship with the tennis world. She had basically completely run out of any passion for the game and was very happy to retire. By mid 1992 she was on the spiral that took her out of the game. She hadn't won a tournament for almost a year by the time Monica Seles was stabbed. Clearly, that thalassemia she suffered from also took its toll at times.

La derecha de Arantxa era un espanto. Otra gran beneficiada por Hamburgo 93.

Wow. Very plausible theory. Now you have me sitting at home seriously thinking about this. LOL
