Gorgeous Gabby!! What a volley to bring up match point
14 years old!
I loved the joke about the Maleeva sisters by a BBC pundit- "The entire British Empire has been trying to find one player to beat Navratilova for years and one woman in Bulgaria births 3 of them!"
Very seldom does Chris up 5-2 in the third not serve it out for the match. Gabby was up 40-0 serving at 3-5. Had she held Chris would’ve had a tough game serving at 5-4. Gabby fought hard and Chris was lucky to pull it out similar to Chris score line vs Martina in the final. Chris plays so well and doesn’t play scared. Chris gave an identical performance in the final.
Gabriela had an excellent one handed backhand. Such a pleasure to watch. Thanks for uploading
I-N-C-R-E-I-B-L-E!!!
Sabatini is one year older than me. Had a huge crush on her growing up. As a woman, she became even MORE BEAUTIFUL. The most beautiful tennis player to ever play! And loved her big topspin game & power. Too bad she retired early, i think around same age as Borg (around 25)?
Hermosa Gaby.
Felicidades Gabriela!
❤ Saba ❤ deserves to be liked.
Monica’s tennis was breathtakingly brilliant. Two consecutive years she plays Gaby and three of the four sets are 6-1 after a five-setter when Monica was 16. Two consecutive years she annihilates Martina in the final sets, 6-0 in 91 and 6-1 in 92. Where was loser graf these three years during her “peak”? 😂
❤ Saba ❤ calm Saba ❤ cool Saba ❤ beats tall Lindsay Davenport with patience ❤ . Saba stay blessed ❤ Argentina 😂 .
❤ Great Saba ❤ calm Gab ❤ long live Argenti ❤ .
❤ Great Saba ❤ calm Gab ❤ long live Argenti ❤ .
Very talented Gabriela Sabatini ❤ Superior tennis player ❤.
I got tired of Steffi winning everything. With American tennis down this year, Gabby was one I rooted for. Her one handed backhand and lethal serve to the Ad side was a big part of her success.
That final took place exactly on 36 birthday of Martina Navratilova. Great win of Martina !!!!
Manuela Maleeva, one of the most boring WTA players that has ever existed.
Watching old woman tennis is such a boring sport. It was a slow move, very muscular body, & too manly for a woman
I always found it a little odd that Gabriella never won a major on clay. She never even made it to the final of the French open. Only to the semis. Clay was her best surface. Go figure
Two absolute icons
Gabriella has such a wonderful One handed backhand and serve. While I love Martina's serve and volley approach.
#Gaby my mother loved you ! You were part of our childhood !
Such graceful technique, fluent yet powerful shots by both and no screeching and screaming. White racquets really enhance the visibility of shots. My two absolute favourite players. Great times. Martina still playing with Yonex RQ-180 and Gaby switched in 92 from POG to Yamaha Secret EX-110.
And Gaby was never the same again.
This was always such an interesting rivalry. At this stage of their matches Martina's game was declining due to age and although Gaby's serve was doing her no favors, her groundstrokes and net game were really top notch. I actually lost count on how many glorious backhand passing shots blew past Martina, both down the line and cross court.
Martina was making too many errors. Her problem was that her serve/ approaches lost depth, she was slow getting into net position and Gabby's topspin was dipping before she had a decent volley. She was forever volleying below net level and offering up very easy mid court gifts. Martina had a bad day at the office.
This was definitely not Gaby's best day at serving... Even without being her favorite shot, which is notorious, she had better serving days than this, that's for sure. But she was able to balance this problem thanks to an incredible day at firing backhand winners all over the place. I definitely lost count. How lethal that shot was OMG. Looking at many battles vs Steffi, I noticed that her backhand, when she tries to hit a winner or a strong drive, has the same pace of Steffi's forehands and sometimes even more.😮 The way she routinely snaps her wrist on it (the very source of her power and control over the shot), with great smoothness, strength and confidence, is reminding me Federer's wrist snap on his backhand.
Era un placer verle jugar a Sabatini ❤❤❤
Gaby ya venia en caida
♥

The 1990 Lipton tournament had probably the weakest field of the 1990s. No Graf (injured), Navratilova or Sanchez Vicario. Gaby in the disappointing form that she had throughout the first half of 1990. It was the beginning of Monica Seles' 36 match unbeaten streak. Interesting to see the footage of Gaby being taken off court in a wheelchair from the 1990 Australian Open after the injury. There were serious concerns about the safety of the Rebound Ace surface - when it got hot it started to melt. Martina Navratilova said it was one of the reasons she stopped playing there after 1989. She talked about how she'd got burned from the surface one time after getting down low for a volley.
There's a great interview with Gaby from Summer 2024 in the link below. She discusses her career, her problems on the tour, Wimbledon 1991, her US Open win and a lot more. A great insight into how she found the tour a bit much at times and had to find other hobbies and interests. ruclips.net/video/gqKcHZPYBKw/видео.html

Gaby played really well in this match. I was definitely not expecting her to lose 6-1/6-1 to Monica Seles in the next round. I was really hoping they would have repeated the match from the previous year which, to this day, is my favourite match ever!
Monica played so well in that match, but I remember in Tennis magazine at the time they said that 'there were signs that the season had gone on too long for Gaby'. In 1991, she didn't win a tournament after Rome in May (same in 1992). She seemed to always have trouble playing consistently throughout the year and would have patches of playing well, then looking like she didn't really want to be there. There's a great recent podcast interview with her, where she discusses how she really needed to get away from the tour at times.
The point at 7:40 was pretty spectacular! This era was overflowing with talent! I feel like in some ways Gaby was at her best when she used the Prince original graphite racquet as she was here. It was heavy and didn’t give you any easy power at all, but it enabled her to really go after her shots and its control suited her nicely. She was so strong that she could handle this racquet no problem. I used that racquet when I started playing too and I loved it. One day I demo’d her Yamaha racquet and I couldn’t stand it. It felt so dissimilar to the Prince. I wonder what provoked Gaby to make that switch? She beat Jen in the majority of their matches including at the slams in Australia, and a few times at Wimbledon with Jen taking the US in 91, I miss this type of tennis.
I always thought exactly the same about her using the Prince racquet. Shame she decided to go after the extra money with the Yamaha
The players tend to switch racquets because they're offered huge amounts of money to do so. It was interesting that Gaby didn't have the Prince logo on her racquets through most of 1991, so they must not have been sponsoring her. I can imagine that her agents went through a very extensive set of negotiations with various racquet companies to see who would offer most money. The Yamaha model Gaby would actually have been using would very likely have been quite different to the one sold to the public. That's very often the case - these racquet companies market something to the public that is quite different to what the players use, as the players' version would be just too difficult for the average player to handle. We saw that happen with Steffi Graf's Wilson racquets - the one she used had a substantially smaller head and was much heavier than the version available to the public. It's an interesting area - Monica Seles got it very wrong when switching to Yonex before the 1990 US Open. She seems to have had real trouble finding the right stringing tensions, and in the videos of her loss to Linda Ferrando that US Open, you can clearly see that the racquet she's using is cracked (no doubt because she was stringing it way too tightly). I don't know if Yonex subsequently modified and reinforced the racquets for her, or whether she settled on a lower tension, but it cost her dearly. Interestingly, there were rumours that when Monica skipped Wimbledon 1991, it was so she could cash in on a $1 million bonus for being #1 on a specific date (you could game the women's ranking system more easily then by not playing). As for Gaby, I get the impression that Yamaha were making a very tailor made racquet for her, She tested it at the 1991 Canadian Open and didn't like it, so asked for modifications and it wasn't until the start of 1992 when she moved across. I definitely agree though that she played better with her Prince Graphite.
Neither player won at Wimbledon, only Sabatini won one US open. Their strokes were beautiful but were suited for slower courts in general cement was the best surface for Capriati and clay was Gabbys although it was Gabby that won the Open going to the net more often than any other match she ever played. I’ve always wondered why she didn’t play the net more often. It was so successful against Graf in that open final.
I agree with you
Gaby really should have taken Wimbledon in 91. She served for it twice. The first time was her worst game of the match. The second time she seemed tense. Her serve let her down the final few games of the match. She had been hitting her serve well, getting most first serves in with good spin and location. Gaby hadn’t lost many points due to Graf return of serve winners, but at 6-5 Gaby got very tentative with her serve, lost pace, and placement. I think had Gaby won those two points at 6-5, her career would have been very different. It would have been something to see her win a few more majors.
@@moviefan4life166 There's a great recent podcast interview with Gaby where she discusses her career. She said she wasn't too disappointed by the Wimbledon loss, as she was surprised to have got that far. She said she was very unhappy with her game that Wimbledon and had something of a crisis meeting with Carlos Kirmayr after her first round win, she was so unhappy. It's an interesting interview and can be found in the link below: ruclips.net/video/gqKcHZPYBKw/видео.html
Estaría buenisimo si alguien subiera ese partido completo!
Genial video ❤
@@petosp Gracias!!
