YES! so well done! I just watched the knucklehead at colonels corner take a canvas tarp and spray just mineral spirits on it... and say it was waterproof...(???) it hurt my brain. I had to check a few other videos to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I seriously hope people find your video before they try his method. sheesh. thanks Shawna!
Thank you! This method really works well. I don’t use my canvas tarp often but it is still waterproof with not having to reapply more solution yet. Thanks for watching, Cheers my friend! 👍
Oh wow! What a great method! I'm going to do this with my old soviet rain poncho. It's great that It dries with a natural look, not wet like. Thanks so much.
@@simplyoutdoorswithshawna9429 I will try it, if too thick I will mix less silicone and spray extra coats and see what happens. Very cold here and will be hanging outside, may take bit more dry time.
@@simplyoutdoorswithshawna9429 I live in Idaho, just bought land on the edge of Frank Church Wilderness, it's the last property on the edge of 2 mil 300,000 acres of untouched wilderness. It is a 1/2 days hike to the Salmon River below.
This looks like just what I need to waterproof my small messenger bag. I noticed it dried really nice and didn't darken or stiffen it up. I'm not worried about colour change but mostly about stiffness. The tarp seemed to be nice flowy even after the application, not stiff and hard like some other waterproofing videos I've seen. Is that because you used the silicone and not wax? Thanks! and great video with easy explanations.
Hi Thanks for watching. I am glad you enjoyed the video and that it was easy to follow. Hope that this application works for you. My tarp is still great and protected after several months and no stiffness. It must be using the silicone instead of wax that makes the material more durable. Cheers my friend!
Hope this can be used on a new portable 10x10 awning and the tarp part of it is made from a blue a polyester or nylon type material so hope the mineral spirits won’t hurt it. It doesn’t let a lot of water thru when it rains but I want to stop it all.
Thanks for the video tried this on my canvas tent I made. Im hoping for the same results you had. It took a really long time to put it on and Wow does it stink inside the house took 7l to cover and almost six full tubes of caulk but it’s a pretty big tent
Hi there! I am glad my video was able to help you waterproof your canvas tent. I’m sure you will have good results if you followed the same mixture. Wow! I bet the house smelled very strong after that. Hopefully you venting the area well and had a mask. Thanks for watching, Cheers.
Hi there! I am glad my video helped you. I am not sure how long the waterproofing will last on the canvas. I have had this tarp out with me a few times after I made this video and it is still great. Thanks for watching!
I feel it’s like any treatment you apply to help make something waterproof or treat fabric. It is always good to re-apply when needed. When you see that the proofing is not working like it should. Thanks for watching! Cheers 👍
ruclips.net/channel/UCgbpRwUoVs0f7_sA4boNu-Q Hi there! I copied the link for you where I got this idea to waterproof your canvas. Thank you so much for watching my video. I hope this helps you. Cheers!
Hi I never thought of a spray bottle. It may be too thick for a spray bottle but you could always try. You want it to soak in to the material. Thanks for watching, Cheers!

I'm sorry, but why don't you just put the mineral spirits in the big cup and add the silicone and stir it up with a chopstick and not go through all that other stuff
Was looking at how to waterproof tarps and came across your video. I appreciate the waterproofing method, but please be careful of the safety info you are spreading. The mask you are wearing is a half-face respirator with P100 cartridges. They are great for dust and sanding, but offer no protection against the fumes you are breathing. You need to swap out for organic vapor cartridges like the 3M 60923. Otherwise the mask is just ornamental.
Thanks for watching! Also thank you for the great information on my mask. I actually asked a supply company to send me a mask that’s good for chemical and vapours and that is the one they sent me. Very disappointing to find out that is not the right kind. I will definitely research more on the masks. Cheers!

Im wondering if a garden sprayer could be used to quickly apply a smooth even coating?

Good tip on waterproofing.
Glad to see you back on here. Have missed you.

Are those 2 tubes of silicone sealant?
Thank you for the tutorial! How did this turn out for camping? Still stinky?

Great video, very clear instructions. I might just give it a go! Thank you very much

It won’t hurt to try it. It is basically all naturally solution.
Did you only need the 2 tubes of silicone or did you end up needing more to do the whole thing ?
Hi there! Two tubes only did the one side. Thanks for watching!

Those are not chemical cartridges. Those are for dust particles

That mask is made for small particles not organic vapors....
I worked for a pest control company in the past, and they gave that type of mask for fogging homes with pesticides
