  • How to upgrade the HDD and memory in the HP Pavilion 15-n290sa and other HP Pavilion 15 laptops based around this chassis, allowing you to upgrade to an SSD and dual channel memory configurations, or to replace a faulty HDD.
The disassembly process is extremely simple and can be done with a plastic pry tool and small screwdriver in a few minutes.

Excellent video - thanks! What a terrible design of laptop though - pretty much a full strip for a HDD upgrade? Nuts!

Excellent video. Worked perfectly. Just a note for others. My laptop had two additional small ribbon cables on the top side. Have to be careful not to damage them when removing the top section of the laptop case.

Without a doubt, the worst laptop I've ever had the displeasure of replacing a drive on. Just provide an access panel! An unbelievably tedious job to replace what should be a user serviceable part...

    • @BrueComputing

+Guy Moores Pretty common now, relatively few laptops have easy access to internal components - often even upgrading the RAM involves opening up the laptop.

Guy Moores I wanted to replace to ssd but I was like it takes 5 Min..but wth is wrong with hp.. They did this so that people would go to service Center.. Now it's impossible for me to change. Are even 2017 version of hp laptops same?

Could not have done the job without this video - I have to say this is the most difficult laptop I have ever had to work on for a simple harddrive exchange - the equivalent of taking the engine out of a car to change a headlamp bulb - HP should be ashamed...

Thanks for this! It let me open up my NA-032SA which was identical except a minor change in the keyboard attachment.
The flat screws at 3.55 didn't play ball with my phillips head 00 or 000. I eventually used a 1.5mm x 50mm crosshead from a set I got from amazon (Vastar 17pcs precision if you need it).

    Excellent and I have subscribed.
HP really made these cheap end laptops hard to access and used inferior ribbon cables and clips on most. They are hard to open because they are assembly line designed for cheap labour and no other reason.
HP have occasionally made some quite good higher end machines but those days have gone and their prices are ludicrous for under-specced trash.

It's so frustrating how few laptops provide a panel for easy access to these components. On my ThinkPad, I remove the battery and 2 screws and have access to the CPU and it's cooling system, the hard disk, the optical drive and the RAM.

Thanks for the video ...so many screws, and awful clips that make you feel you are snapping the plastic ... which I did around the usb port. I would agree about this being a terrible design, but it is an old laptop, and it looks like all manufacturers now make it increasingly difficult to change 'consumer' parts (I have a new pavilion x360, which has similar challenges)

Is it worth upgrading the hard drive in a HP pavilion ts 15 n? My keyboard space bar stopped working so that's $10 there plus another $130 for 1tb Samsung 860 Evo, plus it's still only has 4 gigs of RAM which I would like to have 8 or 12 gb. It's a four year old laptop so maybe it's just better to not bother

It is very hard to understand what exactly needs to be lifted to release the keyboard cable. You call it "the latch" however not everyone understand what part is "the latch", and it is not very visible since you are not zooming. You should explain that the black stripe should be pulled upward. I had to see another video who made a closeup to understand it. Gladly I did not break the connector

Looks like the HP Pavilion 15-au010wm can take a 2.5" SSD like this if you replace the HDD: amzn.to/2bYxYmu
It may also have an M2.2280 slot you could fit an SSD like this in to: amzn.to/2bA6KDn
I'd suggest checking if you have an M2.2280 slot before buying one though.
