I think Peter invented a new genre with this particular performance of the lamb. I call it: Progressive Punk!
Post-punk?
I guess he shook all that "dark" period with this punk attitude and luckily he survived in a way the risk he had taken..
.
Yeah "The Lamb" was something totally different than "Selling England By The Pound" and "Trick Of The Tail" it's like Peter teleported late 70's/ early 80's post punk from the future into that one double album in 1974. And nobody else in Genesis knew what was happening.
Before I read your comments I was thinking to myself this seems a bit Punk, particularly the beginning.
This and On The Air IMO
Tony Levin. Gabriel's right hand man. One of the best bassists ever...
when your resume is Peter Gabriel and King Crimson, yeah one of the best bass players ever. Saw him live once with Gabriel, 3 times with Crimson. Dude is a monster
@@banjocinema1954 Might as well add John Lennon to that resume (for Double Fantasy) to make it a slam dunk!
@@banjocinema1954 Don't forget Paul Simon pre-"Graceland"-Tony's on the "Central Park" concert video. Also, he's the popularizer of "disco octave slap bass" due to his playing that style on Herbie Mann's "Hijack", the 1st big single with that on it.
He also played bass on Floyd's Reason album. He was invited to tour, but couldn't. Guy Pratt filled that spot
And Alice Cooper, Billion Dollar Babies. Tony was producer Bob Ezrins go-to guy.
In my not so humble opinion this is was the best officially filmed Peter Gabriel concert.
I have not seen this and I cannot believe it. I only saw the garbled one that was barely visible so I am going to relive my 20s! Thank you so much for this.❤🎶 No backup track no autotune. Bliss!
I saw this 1978 tour in Oxford. It's still one of the best gigs I've ever seen. After nearly 50 years, The Lamb also remains one of my favourite albums. Always thought Back in NYC was punk before punk became a thing.
PETER GABRIEL= Ahead of his time
Best most theatrical live concert I have ever seen in 50 years. Peter performed the whole album, so many costume changes. No one had ever done this before, in many ways it was better than a NYC Broadway Show.
ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!! LLDOB was my first concert that I ever went to. 15 yrs old and costume changes just blew me away, had no idea that a concert was like that and none I ever saw after to this day have ever been like that concert. It was fucking cool. I still have my original album and it's in perfect condition.
@@stevenkaskel3469 A HS friends uncle was in the record business he would give her radio station demo albums. I heard LLDOB maybe a half year before they played in CA. She gave me that album and many more. I saw Genesis at the Berkley Community Theater less than 3000 capacity. I knew and bought tickets in advance perfect center of stage seats 15 feet from Peters mic. The light and costume changes were well done. No radio station were really playing the songs from the album until after the Live shows. Its to bad about Phil Collins health neurological disorders.,. Take care
I saw them do the show at Academy of Music. Very unsatisfying compared to their earlier Foxtrot and later Selling England. Perhaps it was the tension between the band and Peter. He was conflicted and soon to leave them. Loved the concept but, in real performance, it was spotty.
Just think, he’s only 28 here, and think of all the work he has accomplished so far.
i know very well that 😉
And a lifetime of music to go. Reminds me of Robert Plant who would have thought he’d still be rocking 40 years after Zeppelin
I think that Peter Gabriel has a deep understanding of human pain that's why I like him so much
He actually said it’s important to writing music
Indeed! 🖤
He and Peter Hammill, who especially in the 70s knew each other well and worked together, have a different approach to the same. Hammill's work was less accessible. I've known 2 people who said they loved Hammill but it was just too much to bear for them, the lyrics and the music. If had to explain the difference as I feel it, Hammill presents his views and stings, Gabriel guides through them and enlightens.
One word to describe Gabriel's voice: MAGIC
How can anyone in their right mind think Phil Collins is a better vocalist????
INSANE
Lamb is by far the best album of Genesis. Who's with me?
To me a masterpiece. Eno being inducted with Roxy Music 2019 shared his talent on this incredible album. This album was my Darkside of the Moon.
@@markusantonio4866 Much better than DSOTM........
Yes ! Phil even said they never sounded better on album.
No way, we can’t dance by far. { src }
@@toddgersh nooooo it's calling all stations!
One of the greatest albums ever made. Absolutely adore it from beginning to end. Thank you Peter.
very special album
And thank you Tony..
The original punk rocker, amazing perfomer
We followed his gaze and we thought that maybe we saw
The unmistakeable, irreplaceable voice of the one true Genesis...
no drums
no bass
no keyboars
no voice
no Genesis
don't like
@@joseluishernandezdelgado2866 I didn't say it was Genesis, old son. I said Gabriel was the true voice of Genesis. I didn't comment on the song or the manner in which it was portrayed. That voice was sorely missed when he left. Read what I say, don't interpret it for me...
"The unmistakeable (sic), irreplaceable voice of the one true Genesis"... OK, that's the opinion of you and of those elite who call themselves "true Genesis fans while the others are just commercial fans". But many if not the majority view it differently, namely:
All eras of Genesis represent true Genesis. Both singers PG and PC had each raison d'être. Only Ray Wilson was a misunderstanding which showed the resonance of CAS album plus tour. But even if someone likes it as a part of Genesis we all have to deal with.
Phil Collins voice is also awesome
@@niklas.wagnerAnoher one. 🙄 It's exactly that. My fucking opinion. Didn't ask you to endorse it. You have your views, I have mine. I was merely making a comment. Bet you're fun to have around. If you want a debate, have one with somene who gives a shit. Now jog on...
He is so spent by the end of this show but he still digs deep for the crowd. One of the greatest performers ever.
The Lamb is my favorite album of all time, and early Genesis nurtured my love for music.I am and will be eternally grateful, for what it is worth.
It was great to see Peter Gabriel acting out as Rael from the song. Progressive Rock as a Punk Rocker, Genius.
I always thought Peter has helped to invent Punk rock. Those who don't believe should listen to "Back in NYC" on the double album "The lamb". That was recorded in summer of '74!
Peter is ... a punk rocker
Peter is ... a punk rocker :)
Well he definitely got a hold of his stage fright. As a fellow introvert, must've been exhausting. What a triumph over self.
A mix of a madman and genius .
Saw the whole opera in concert in Oklahoma City in the 70's. It impacted my musical tastes forever. He is still my favorite musician ❤️
my buddy saw the whole album live at The Capitol Theater Passaic ,NJ
Mark Hollis once said, "We want to make music, you can listen to, twenty years from now". That was in the midth of the eighties, 35 years ago. Well, Mark Hollis sadly is gone now, but we are here, still listening to his music.
What a very, very lucky band to back up one of the best visionary singer/artists alive today...STILL!
Peter Gabriel is a total genius, a genuine inspiration, such an amazing originality, this is perfect, love the energy
Tony's really come out of his comfort zone
Great keyboardist!
I saw Gabriel on this, his first post-Genesis tour. at the Glasgow Apollo in 1978, and everyone lost their shit when that keyboard intro started!
Me too, first time I heard a radio mike being used when he was running around the theatre. Good stuff, cheers
I was at that gig too - he came down the aisle right next to me!!
Tim Capello killing it on piano!
Peter want him to play it this way, i think, since this is a "Punk" version of the song.
PG is the only Artist who came out of an Arena Prog Rock Band and turned himself into a Fringe Punk Act. His music crosses and spans all genres. Hard to believe he was still under 30 at this point and he already had nearly 10 years as a Successful Artist under his belt. And he had done 2 Solo Albums. Brilliant!
Genesis hadn't yet made it to arenas when Gabriel was in the band. Lamb was performed in theaters.
Rare for Peter to revisit his Genesis past, so thank you very much for sharing this!
because iIt is 1978 he got only 2 albums published and no wonder hits yet.
I was there in front of the stage.Amazing concert!
Jau ich war auch da ……hab gefreut und war auch irgendwie enttäuscht
Genesis lost an awful lot when Peter left the band in 1975. What a singer, a comedian, an actor, a minstrel, a troubadour, a clown and one of the most fabulous voices of prog rock ever...
Gained a lot more, too: quadrupled their album sales / tripled concert attendances globally.
I really doubt any of Genesis lost any sleep over Gabriel leaving....
Much more lost Peter Gabriel. He never had again such a bunch of great musicians. I think the depart of Steve Hackett was the real downfall of quality Genesis music.
txikilin I always had the impression that Steve Hackett was somewhat the odd man out who just never seemed to fit it or be more much more than the lead guitarist for Genesis, period. Videos seemed to give that feel. Strange, perhaps misled perception since he had Collins and Rutherford on his first solo album. Nonetheless, he has always been graciously complimentary of all original band members.
@@AnAmericanFan Probably because Hackett was ´squeezed out´ by Banks. But Hackett´s sound was hugely integral to the Genesis sound - so much that Banks decided HE wanted HIS sound to be more important.
I think Peter lost a lot more... no keyboards, guitars or drums Peter put forward were ever progressive again... except a couple of tunes on his first album. No melodic rhythm changes anymore, no amazing guitar or drums or keyboards again. He wanted to be a center when once he was part of a greater. Peter never even tried to be produce complex music that could speak independently of his lyrics anymore. But it was what he wanted. But it was not even close to anything he ever did with the boys at his side. Not even close to close.
Tim cappello.... sax dude from lost boys rocking the 🔑
Ah man. It's genius stuff. Makes me want to live forever.
I saw this tour in Cardiff 1978. First time seeing Peter performing since 1975 doing The Lamb with Genesis in Bristol, Englannd, and to think that the wonderful Tony Levin would still be with Peter to this day.😊
What's really amazing, is how unusual this song was for Peter's solo career. Unlike most people who leave a popular group and move on to a solo career, Peter built his career on a complete split with his past and not playing music from his time in Genesis, but entirely of post Genesis works. Yet, also was able to reach the level of popularity but still being different, not a pop rock musician but someone who ended up very popular, with well known songs without selling out his musical roots.
If you follow Peter’s career, he’s always been a great performer. He loves to jump , and he keeps it up till he’s forced to use a bike during his performances. He’s always smiling! Wish I could have met him.
Zita Wilson i noticed the exact same thing! He wanted his audience to have a good time!
Zita Wilson not a good seed
Qwerty123 , I just saw the Musical Box, a Genesis tribute band, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Thursday! There from Canada! It was a blast! Although they do a respectful homage to the Peter Gabriel era, they love them so much and don’t try to pretend they are Genesis. It’s like, we’re her, your here, lets pay tribute to one of the greatest bands ever, and they did, the show was unbelieveable! Genesis even donated props to them! Greetings from Illinois!
Zita Wilson “ Could have met him”. He’ old but still alive! 🤪🤪🤪
I like how Peter and his band transformed this "prog song" into an almost post-Punk energy and chaotic sound.
His stage energy is giving off a Freddie Mercury vibe in this clip.
I wish I had a Time Machine!
Fantastic.
The energy.
Someone said “Progressive Punk”
Yes indeed!
Peter Gabriel's performances always had so much energy
And here's another perfect interpretation by Peter Gabriel❤️❤️
Peter!!! Gran compositor, letrista, voz personal, showman!!! Qué más!!!👏🏻
This is Peter doing a punk performance and it's perfect because in the story of The Lamb, Rael is a punk! Everything was played faster to make it punky.
@Crypto World I am Rael. No, it was way too fast!
He was so high on coke, he couldn't stand still
Seriously? How can you call any genesis song punk? Way too many chord changes and complexity to be punk!
@@bremtremont2027 Thats was punk... and fuck the prog. shit.
The speed was all live performance adrenaline - all live shows where like that back in the day before drummers began wearing metronomes to stay in sync with MIDI programs.
I’ll wager the keyboard player didn’t look up “ how to play Lamb lies Down” on you tube. He did a great job.
There was no YT then, I'm sure he didn't.
It’s a hard job to live up to one of the fastest Tony Banks pieces, it’s a good one.
Fun fact, the keyboardist is Tim Cappello, the sax man from The Lost Boys, before he took up bodybuilding.
@@juanblanco3187 hilarious!🤣
bloody awful
What a brilliant version of the 'Lamb' by Peter. So much attitude! This brings back memories of when I saw Peter perform this song at Hammersmith Odeon, London, around this time and I recall him swinging the microphone stand around and hitting Tony Levin on the head by accident! This drew blood, but Tony, Peter and the band carried like the true professionals they are. This was the first of many times that I saw Peter live. Great memories!
I miss the days when rock stars wore gardening gloves during encores. Kids these days just have no idea :-\
And traffic vests!
I still have some of those gloves, and ARE terrible.

@@joseislanio8910 I remember those ones -dreadful.. I bet he drops the mic
The best thing to ever happen to Genesis and Peter Gabriel was their parting of ways. They both got bigger and improved after they separated.
Peter Gabriel always had a highly theatrical flair for his music, especially in his live performances. His performances were not confined to his music playing and singing; he added drama, stage presence, acting, costumes, props, lighting, and visual effects. This man is an actor, director, singer, and musician on the stage, and live performance on stage is his forte.
Peter got better, and Genesis got more popular but most die hard fans would say not better. I liked the Phil years myself.
And Phil Collins wanted something completely different. He wanted to be a commercial pop star. He had to do it carefully though. On Genesis' first release without Peter Gabriel, Trick Of The Tail, Collins had to sound as much like Gabriel as possible.
What I loved about Peter's live performances is how often he forgot to hold the microphone to his lips.
Its because they were Big musicians at the top of their art..but Peter was the driving force of inovation and what a VOICE
Dont care what version i watch its still brilliance.....
The 'punk' energy and visuals of this performance suit Rael perfectly!
The character of Rael is a rough, punkish character. Gabriel is just doing the character justice.
Mark Terene oh
He does all characters justice.

Now i’m seen everything!
I open my eyes wide with amazement and delight. Amazing voice, stage movement, energy and a good band.
You should have open your ears instead.
What an extraordinary rock voice Gabriel had, absolutely fantastic i can't get enough of this performance.
The band as well are amazing, sid mcginnis is tearing it up on guitar
Peter Gabriel, the man who gave Genesis the character of a super progressive rock group. His unmistakable voice won me over from the Foxtrot album, then through the great Selling England by the Pound and then The Lamb .... When Phill Collins took the voice, he sent the group to Pop. He commercialized it to the degree that I stopped following them. I was left with Gabriel's voice in my mind. The true Genesis was and will be with the man Peter Gabriel.
Just want to state that banks was the major factor for the sound going to pop. Some examples are how banks decided to not put the song "do the neurotic" in the invisible touch album because "it sounded too much like old genesis" or how collins wanted to play the whole supper's ready song in the invisible touch tour but banks thought it was a bad idea. So yeah it wasn't collins fault, and honestly you just have to listen to the lamb album to realize that the natural course was towards simpler songs, with or without peter.
Genesis never left their prog roots tho
No it's Anthony PHILIPPS ! You don't know GENESIS 😅😂😂😂
What's unusual with this? Peter Gabriel solo, doing old Genesis material. He's built his solo career almost exclusively on his solo material. That says a lot right there. He's really had two separate outstanding careers.
it is 1978 he not had too many albums pusblished and is four years after The lamb album
OMG.... peter Gabriel is my all time favorite, This is an unusual performance. WOW.
An absolutely great performance of one of my favourite songs ever. I love Peter and his band performing like the punk bands of those years. Fantastic!! Wish I would have been there
Just brilliant and live he’s so awesome .. my first ever concert Hammersmith odean Peter Gabriel 1978 .. wow ! What a way to start … thanks Peter for this and all your music
It's Rock Opera. 😎
for me ,,,,nobody can replace peter as he is so great
I think he's a fabulous singer.
You think right
The more I watch, the more I see parallels between Peter Gabriel and Freddie Mercury.
How awesome to see Tim Capello playing here with Peter Gabriel!
Wow that tempo, still finding themselves, fascinating.
Note: the Genesis live version of this song on "Seconds Out" is almost as fast.
All you naysayers are just being negative and don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. This is a wonderful version(even the keyboard intro), and it’s really a treat getting to hearGabriel do a Genesis tune at all. And lots of great bands and albums from the “punk era” hold up even better after all these years(note The Clash, Television, Talking Heads, & Richard Hell, to name just a few, all leaving great albums behind(which just get better as time goes by)for us and future generations to enjoy. So all you negative people just keep it to yourself. This is a wonderful version of a great song, and a real treat for the eyes and ears. So shut it! Thanks for reading...
A sensible comment

Seeing Gabriel during this period was a thing to behold; sound and movement.
Listen to Gabriel singing the lamb...the baaaaing accents on the words....and "In the Air" clues to his future? A cracking rendition.
That little parkour off the ladder at 3:55 was amazing.
LOL! All these comments crack me up. This was their encore. They were pumped and full of energy after a badass show. Want it to sound like the studio version? listen to the record!

This proves - you can`t do Genesis song for the encore outof breath :-)
true. this was 78. you could say this was almost a punk version of TLLDOB
Qué joya más grande!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lyrics
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
Early morning Manhattan
Ocean winds blow on the land
The Movie-Palace is now undone
The all-night watchmen have had their fun
Sleeping cheaply on the midnight show
It's the same old ending-time to go
Get out
It seems they cannot leave their dream
There's something moving in the sidewalk steam
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
Nightime's flyers feel their pains
Drugstore takes down the chains
Metal motion comes in bursts
But the gas station can quench that thirst
Suspension cracked on unmade road
The trucker's eyes read 'Overload'
And out on the subway
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Exits into daylight, spraygun hid
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
The lamb seems right out of place
Yet the Broadway street scene finds a focus in its face
Somehow it's lying there
Brings a stillness to the air
Though man-made light, at night is very bright
There's no whitewash victim
As the neons dim, to the coat of white
Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid
Wipes his gun - he's forgotten what he did
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
Suzanne tired her work all done
Thinks money-honey-be on-neon
Cabman's velvet glove sounds the horn
And the sawdust king spits out his scorn
Wonder women you can draw your blind
Don't look at me! I'm not your kind
I'm Rael
Something inside me has just begun
Lord knows what I have done
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
On Broadway
They say the lights are always bright on Broadway
They say there's always magic in the air
I just love this double-time version!
Great, energetic performance with Gabriel in a leather jacket -- I just ordered The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and am looking forward to immersing myself in it.
Peter Gabriel doing his best Freddie Mercury intro...
Saw this tour in Detroit. It was so great to see PG free of the shackles of Genesis. This song, like a lot of side 1 and 2 of the Lamb is best hard and raw. " I don't care who I hurt, I don't care who I do wrong. This is your mess I'm stuck in, I really don't belong." Gabriel was going punk lyrically in 74.
terry blake shackles of Genesis? That’s where this man was at his best and most brilliant.
I realized this sec he included some words from George Benson's classic On Broadway in final verses!
@@earthling2007 I agree that "shackles" is exaggerated and ingenerous, but it's clear from this video that in those years the desires of Peter were not reconcilable with those of the group, especially Steve's. Actually Genesis, under the steerage of Phil, were going as well to write groundbreaking stuff like "Abacab" or "Mama", but in much later times.

Gabriel's heavy bass n drums smokes. Makes the genesis' version sound like a calliope or something.
great drummer . probably Jerry marotta
The most mesmerizing singer ever.
This was OK - because Peter G is such a greatest musician. The original album though, is in my opinion one of the best albums ever made - in any genre. By far the best Peter was ever involved in.

Pure energy!
AWESOME show...Gabe was peaking !
this is version from the year 1978 - played by a Peter Gabriel band from that year. It was the punk-era etc. It doesn`t have to Sound like the Album Version. The Artist can perform the song the way he wants. Some like it, some don`t.
Well put!
You got that right. I like both versions, this one, and the Genesis/Phil Collins one from Seconds Out, which is more melodic. Peter just seemed more full of energy, and wanted to get the crowd going.
For SURE..punkish, love it man.
That's
It's not even really that different, but I agree.
The album he was touring at that time was the closest he'd ever come to punk with tracks like On the Air, D.I.Y. and Perspective and tracks like the title track and Back in NYC from the Lamb sort of fit in with that sound - so it made sense for the encore here and made the old fans happy all at once.
Gabriel always said that composition of the music was 'The centrepiece of all our ambitions!' But he was up there with Bowie for stage presence too. A fearless explorer of the human psyche.
Un artista straordinario, con una voce straordinaria grande Peter Gabriel. 👍
This punk version of the best artist in the universe: Peter Gabriel. So fucking great.
