    Just picked my Explorer 39mm up two days ago. AD said it was the last one that they had. Increased value? That’s nice, but it doesn’t matter as I won’t ever be selling this Explorer. When I’m no longer roaming this earth, my son will be wearing it.

    So crazy. There's a chance we never see the 39 again. If that 41 comes, the prices will go even higher. Glad I got mine under the wire.....Really great watch. Superb legibility. Superb accuracy. Pure class.

    I bought my 39mm a few years ago for $6,500. I love that watch and will never sell it.
    I’m amazed what it’s now worth after it being discontinued.
    My son will eventually have a nice watch.

    This watch is a collection killer. I bought it 3 months ago pre-owned and haven't taken it off since. I've been collecting watches for about 30 years and have several including other Rolexes. This thing is just perfect. What to do with the others that just sit there?

  • @bozartg

    Just bought one (year old, full package) from original owner for $500 more than full retail 3 years ago when I looked at my AD. So, I’m happy I took the plunge as I feel they made a small error reducing the size. 39mm is perfect unless one has a sub-7” wrist. I know they’ll sell every 36 they make but at 7.5” wrist I feel this is nearly perfect.

  • @SPQR-Z

    This is hilarious. A couple years ago you could find the 39mm Explorer for less then retail if you looked around. People always want what they can’t have. Around my area the SS Sports are unattainium or a year to 3 year wait depending. I hadn’t seen a Sport model sitting in an AD display case for 10 years, at least. I’d rather pay the secondary premiums then play the AD’s game.

  • @Milofchg

    I'm happy they came out with the 36mm. I didn't get one in the 90's when I was in my 20's. Now in my late 40's I can get one. Hopefully this year. The price increase was expected but for $12k anyone can get a new Submariner new at an AD and get some change, or a 2021 on the grey market.

    I too purchased my Explorer from a local AD a few years back at retail. About a year later I bought a 40mm Sub from the same dealer also at retail. These are my two everyday watches and they take turns on my wrist, although, I also own an Apple Watch and that also gets a little wrist time. I thought buying these two Rolexes would scratch my itch. However, I am now eyeing a GMT Master ll. I will try to buy one through my AD. If I can’t buy it that way, then I will pass. Will not get caught up paying ridiculously high prices in the secondary market. It is nice to know my watches have gone up in value since both are discontinued. However, my plans are to gift the Explorer to my daughter and Sub to my son. Keep them in the family when I am gone. Thank you for doing this video, enjoyed it. Will now subscribe to your channel. Good for you Chris!
      Since making the video, I’ve been considering selling mine and getting an Airking. New, from an AD. They’re currently retailing for the same price I paid back in January 2020 for the Explorer, and I think they may be the next to be discontinued. The current model has been on the market since the 214270 m2 - 2016.
      I’m going to wait and look at the price in about 10 months. If selling the Explorer will get me a brand new Airking and my grail camera, a Leica Q2 monochrome, I might just do it.

  • @abajaj1510

    • @watchesandstuff6837
      @watchesandstuff6837  3 года назад

      And they’re basically the same watch with different dials, only the AirKing is the same price that the Explorer was over a year ago. If I was in the market for a new Rolex and budget was the deciding factor, I’d get an AirKing.

      @@watchesandstuff6837 well different dials, hands, bracelets and lineages....only the movement and case are the same

  • @my5digithobby967
    @my5digithobby967 3 года назад

    another unpopular opinion haha: "value proposition" could be argued to be more applicable to Rolex than almost any brand, in the sense that even if you pay market price and not the arbitrary retail price, the market price has continued to increase, compared to buying something more thought of as a "budget" brand, since the value of those goes down, and you are losing money, not to mention the cost of maintenance that would further add to the cost, if service is worth doing at all. Therefore the "cost" of ownership is often actually a negative number with a Rolex (if you don't overpay and/or wait for them to appreciate) whereas if you buy a true "budget" brand and any servicing actually exceeds the residual value, you've spent your money with nothing of value remaining other than a paperweight. And I'm guilty of this myself of course LOL

    • @watchesandstuff6837
      @watchesandstuff6837  3 года назад +1

      I've just inquired at the same AD if i can visit them to try a Milgauss or an Air King. (both the same size, same case, but pretty chunky). I think the AirKing will be the next on the chopping block. And with that quirky dial, collectors will miss it when it's gone!

    • @my5digithobby967
      @my5digithobby967 3 года назад

      @@watchesandstuff6837 Yes I agree, I’ve never been a fan of the 40mm AirKing myself, both the quirky dial and the thickness/stoutness of the case - however, the dial guarantees that it will go down as a classic since it is so different and idiosyncratic, and the case is not unwearable by any means, just not as svelte as some other options. Both the Milgauss and the AirKing have impeccable construction and movements, you can’t go wrong!

    • @watchesandstuff6837
      @watchesandstuff6837  3 года назад +1

      I’m convinced these two will go for another reason: the movement. All newer Rolex models are packing a 70 hour power reserve. These two are still on the 48. I believe both of these will be retired or replaced by April ‘22 if not before. The Airking is currently retailing at the same price as the Explorer in 2019. Considering the inspiration for the Airking dial design is also no longer a marketing factor, with the bloodhound project pretty much dead, I’m sure it’s a dead man walking. The Explorer is now up 59% (average) on Chrono24. If I like the fit of the Airking, it might replace my Explorer.

    • @my5digithobby967
      @my5digithobby967 3 года назад

      @@watchesandstuff6837 yes you should definitely get whichever you like best, I would just caution you not to expect too much in terms of price, since there are tons of unworn brand new in box 214270s and the market is flooded with people trying to cash in on the newly discontinued status, and remember that those are dealer prices and not the wholesale price that an owner should expect when selling, and Chrono24 prices are usually 10-15% higher than real market value. The same thing happened with my Hulk, I toyed with selling it when it was discontinued and I would have made money but nothing like the prices you see on Chrono24 they aren’t realistic in my experience

    • @watchesandstuff6837
      @watchesandstuff6837  3 года назад +1

      Good to know. Cheers. I favorited a few Explorers that were listed at 30~40% above my retail and they are indeed selling. I don’t think I’d have the nerve to sell a Rolex on Chrono24, I’m just using it as a benchmark. If I do sell, I’ll let the prices climb even more then try locally, person to person at a good price.
