Tony Northrup reviews the new Sigma 50mm f/1.2 Art lens for portraits (both in the studio and natural light), sports, contrast, bokeh, sharpness and maximum magnification (minimum focusing distance). He primarily compares it to the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM (G Master) lens, though the Sigma lens is also available for L-mount full-frame cameras such as Leica and Panasonic.

@@TonyAndChelsea This is actually a lot better than many medication ads I've seen 😁
Wait one year and spend only 1k
No salesman ever said that !!
Really appreciate you uploading in HDR! Makes it that much more vivid and enjoyable on my large iPad in the morning with coffee.
it looks lifelike
My pleasure!
Ah! Is this why it looks so dark on my normal monitor? Any way I can fix that?
Did you compare those lenses for brightness? Actual T stops would be nice, but even just looking at a scene shot with the same wide open settings and same camera...is one brighter than the other?
My Sony 50 1.2 is glued to my A7iv, only reason I take it off will be when I get a new body
Yeah it's one of my favorite lenses.
I did the same by using the gorilla superglue. Then I realized that the camera was no longer an interchangeable lens camera. I cannot tell if 50mm 1.2 is my favorite lens since I cannot use any other lenses.
Looks like a compelling option for L-Mount, especially with the new high res bodies coming this year.
For E-Mount I’m waiting to see what Viltrox comes up with for their LAB series lenses
Yeah for L-Mount this opens up low-light and shallow depth-of-field options that only Canon/Nikon/Sony had previously (in AF)
Awesome review! Thank you!
Awesome Tony , what a beast at that price point , thanks
This. In the entire Web, I have found ONLY one unbiased comparison review between the Sigma and Sone 50 mm 1.2 lens - that's why I always respect Tony. Hats off to you, Sir. :)
Needless to say, if you have the Sony 1.2 there is no need for this. If anything I'm interested in the Sony 50 1.4 due to size.
How does the Bokeh compare the the Leica 50mm Noctilux-M f1.0 or f0.95? We know how it compares on price.
I wonder if they have the same optical design. Perhaps the differences can be attributed to the AF motors and lens manufacturing techniques
Can I know if the Sony vlog monitor can be used with the I phone 15 pro model?
Question: The Sony A1 will release a focus breathing update soon for video. Will this new feature only be compatible with Sony lenses or will it work with both Sigma and Sony lenses? Thanks
Just Sony lenses.
Chelsea has always been a nice model, cute. Great review! Thanks Tony, I might buy this lens as I don't have a 50mm for my A7IV.
How was the focus breathing? Newer sony bodys have focus breating compensation that only work with sony branded lenses. Honestly they are very similar but idk if i would go for the sigma... maybe if it was like a 1000 dollar difference
I didn't notice anything significant in our video test where I was moving in and out.
That is the problem by design or luck or... all these small differences do add up the sony clearly is the better lens in small details and several usecases.. Is each difference a $100 value? No idea but for many it will be if they already own a flagship body. But its good we have (even more) options so many emount lenses now can't be bad.
Thank you for your comparison video. Nice to see Sigma is improving their product but for me it’s about three years too late since the Sony 50/1.2 GM came out in 2021 which is when I upgraded my Zony 50/1.4 ZA to it which was another fine lens. I’ve been using it on my A1 since then so to cost, while expensive was worth $500 for three years of output. A six to nine month delay would have made the Sigma a killer follow on for me since a fast 50mm has always been central to any kit I built. Take care.
dang, after watching you video. I am having a dilemma which one to get now. I have Sony 16-35 F4 G PZ, Sony 24 f1.4 GM, Sigma 85 f2.8, Sigma 24-70 f2.8, Sony 70-200 f2.8 GMII. I wanted to get a 50 nifty but I don't wish spend too much, but if there is no choice, I will try to invest one. Wish to use it for portrait outdoor, food vlogging, food photos. Which one do you recommend? Sony 50 f1.2 GM / Sony 50 f1.4 GM / Sigma 50 f1.2?
The most rational choice is the sigma 50 1.4. It will give you the most bang for the bucks. The best lens is the Sony 50 1.2 as it has no limitations.
Would it be possible that these are exactly the same lenses but the Sigma's autofocus is artificially (softwarely) or physically and intentionally slowed down ?
Their optics are definitely different.
Very good and informative comparison video!
Glad you liked it!
For a wedding photographer who's already carrying a ton of gear, would you suggest this over the 50mm f/1.4 GM?
F/1.2 looks amazing and I frequently shoot at unideal lighting, but I'm already carrying a second body, 24mm, 85mm, and the 35-150mm.
Yeah I would take this. You won't always shoot it wide open but there will definitely be times, like dancing at the reception, where the extra light and subject separation will make a big difference.
@@TonyAndChelsea thank you for the reply! I’m in California so leaving any gear in the car isn’t an option. Maybe I’ll deal with carrying it around all day.
I’ve just recently shot my last few weddings with the Sony 1.2. Absolute beast of a lens. The weight is less than I expected going off all the reviews and is certainly not a problem for me. Highly recommend. Btw I’ve got the sigma too but have found its build quality is nowhere near as good- there’s some horrible wiggle in my sigma 50mm.
Thanks so much 😊

Dang it!! I wish I didn't get the Sigma 1.4 last year... Oh well...
You can show up to any high school in America and there will be a sporting event in session.
Well done reel- very good the differentiation between performance for landscape=Sony and portrait =Sigma /// thx
While I'm not intrigued enough to buy the Sigma new, I'm intrigued enough that if I see a good price used I'd buy it in an instant.
Sorry for the off-topic comment: please review the Xiaomi 14 ultra
How about the weight difference?
Came too late, got my Sony f1.2GM already, and it works brilliant only way for me to get rid is the when I go for the f1.4 due to smaller size
I took th3 50/1.4 gm just because of the smaller weight and size. Taking pictures with him is fun.
Will Sigma 50mm f/1.2 work with Sony crop sensor camera?
It will work, but doing that would be an utter waste of money. You'd get a 75mm f/1.8 equivalent - that's available for much cheaper in dedicated apsc lenses.
@@youknowwho9247 ok, will go for Viltrox or Sigma crop lens. Thanks
Great review. Sigma sometimes have a lot of distortion (eg their 85mm f1.4). Please add a comment about this. Thank you.
I didn't see any, but we did apply their lens-specific profile that corrects any distortion and vignetting.
your Sigma 85 f1.4 has distortion? I don't have that, neither is my friend. Is yours defect or something? It shouldn't be distorting tho.
Sigma Art lenses have had these dificiencies or aberrations when it comes to bokeh. This part of a picture is more important than people think because of the lesser 3D feeling. The Sigma Art lenses produce much more noise in the bokeh when the background has high contrast with lots of dry branches or something like it.
I actually sold my Art lenses (1,4 lenses) because of their noisy bokeh!
You nearly always get what you pay for!
RF mount please 🙏 Thank you Canon.

@@TonyAndChelsea All that bokeh makes it kinda hard to tell. 👻
the sigma T stop seems slightly darker.
shocking!
I already have both the Sigma 1.4 and the cheapo Sony 1.8 (as kind of a small lens for the street). As a non-professional there is no way I can justify it to buy one of those 1.2 lenses. 😕
Other than astrophotography, when is someone going to shoot a landscape at F1.2, test them at F8-F11, to see if they're distinguishable? Portraits, or urban street photography, yes F1.2-F2 are really important.
Yeah I don't think edge sharpness is very important in any scenario with f1.2, but I had to mention it. There's SUCH a small sliver of sharpness when shooting wide-open.
@TonyAndChelsea I think the Sigma is plenty good enough for any non-pros to use. I have only one Canon lens the rest are Sigmas, I'm not a pro, just very enthusiastic, hobbiest photographer that is into landscape and astrophotography.
Sooooo Sony 1.4 or Sigma 1.2???? 🎉🎉. Good for us!
I took the 50/1.4 GM for a7iv and it's a great choice. The GM 1.2 is big and heavy, you don't want to lug it around all day. The 1.4 GM is really amazingly sharp and fast. 1.4 is what I need for portraits and weddings.
The price point is not to far off for a Sony GM used. I’m not seeing the benefit at this cost as I did with the new sigma 70-200. The cost savings here is irrelevant.
50 mm f 1.2 can be found on Facebook marketplace for around $1300
You can get the Sony for 1400-1600 used already. Sigma price is great though
Meh used
yeah valid point. I bet the Sigma will be close to $1,000 used in a year or two.
When it comes to glass, always buy the best you can afford if you are serious about your images. A mid-grade camera with a high end lens will normally produce better images than a high-end camera with a poor lens. With the exception of the Sony 85 1.4, all of their fast lenses are unbeatable. Some third party lenses are really good. But, not "As good" as the Sony glass. If you want to save some money, there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a good condition, used Sony lens. Save some dollars and still have the best glass available. Just my two cents! @Tony and Chelsea - Love your content!!
Hi, why is 85 1.4 the exception ?
@@MagdalenaMaciejewska-dd8ve I returned mine as it struggled with auto-focus in "dimmer" light. Even in the studio. B&H sent me a second one, same issue. I got the Sigma 85 1.4 and it significantly out performs the Sony lens. Just my experience.
@@tomi6261 thanks 🙂 ! Good to know !
Love my sigma 50mm f1.4 dg gn. But a f1.2 🤔🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
I was excited until I saw that 50% of the images were out of focus with a walking subject.
Unfortunately, I mainly shoot dance...
I don't know why, but watching this video in HDR makes it look underexposed, I don't know if I'm the only one. (I'm using a HDR display anyways)
Hmm well it's an HDR video that RUclips hasn't processed up to HDR yet... it sometimes takes YT like 2 days to fully process an HDR video. So maybe that's why.
@@TonyAndChelseaWell RUclips sometimes is weird. Thank you for you answer
I need a camera😌
2:59 sigma is noticable yellower than GM on skin tone
the aperture is not as important for boke than the focal lengh > try a 135 1,8 or similar.
Sigma is a great way to start building a professional kit
The frame rate difference alone will make me spend the extra 25%.
Why your video is kinda under exposed
Why dont lens reviewers test lenses for micro contrast? Isn’t that important as it makes subject pop with a 3d effect?
As near as I can tell, a RUclipsr made up the term "micro contrast". If you can show me an example of what it is that isn't described by contrast and sharpness, please email me at tony@northrup.org.
This is going to be a fantastic option for the Leica SL and a7 series owners, but it brings zero to the equation for A1/9 owners
I think it's nice to have a $500 cheaper option for portraits.
@@TonyAndChelseanot if you have a stack...😎 & I bet if someone jailbroke the A1, then we could lift the 15FPS limit for Sigma Primes and I bet this lens could be pushed harder...but Sony wants everyone in jail, without Pre-Capture, Animal/Bird Eye AF in Video, Focus Bracketing in body or Focus Breathing Comp...2 years after it was supposed to arrive for the A1 in March of 2022. However, if I had an a7Cii, a7CR, or ZV-E1 and didn’t have the GM already...this would be the 50 for me
tony?
john?
For cameras with stacked sensors, the Sony lens, only $500 more than the Sigma lens, now looks even better of a bargain.
Sure glad I have a sigma FP L and they don't make the SA mount for it.....
Where is NIKON 50MM F1.2 in this story?
Will sigma 50mm f1.4 price drop?
Doubt it, its already quite competitive.
5:02 -> Artificially limit… Sony taking a page from Canon’s book. Nice lens review!
Its not that i like the limit (as a a1 owner) but if the sigma here is only hitting 60% at 15fps and the sony lens 100% at 30fps you have to wonder about this limit. There seem to be very few non sony lenses for emount that will do 30,60,120fps solid AF. What is the fun in being able to use a sigma at 120fps if most are out of focus. It would be a much more clear call if all these 3th partly lenses would be solid to 15fps but they are not.
@@Whatsgoodmydude2222
Exactly: if the limit is artificial for burst mode, the Sigma lens should not fall behind in Video AF
But it does
So limitation is in (third party) lens I believe
I own so many third party l we need for my Canon EF mount
But native lenses do have the most reliable overall performance
Sony's rowing back on its open mount is regrettable
The only sad thing is you will lose high FPS shooting with this lens limited to 15 fps + Autofocus is less reliable
❤❤
🔥🤩🤩🤩
No such thing as a total Independent review if anyone gets their gear for free to review. That's a total myth. Also, unless the reviewer turns off all ads, they are all also being compensated. Now with that out of the way, for the vast majority, Pro or otherwise, the FPS won't be that much of issue. Why, because at 30FPS or more, most camera buffers will be hit with limitations far quicker. So waiting for the buffer to clear as opposed to shooting at a lower rate. Now the AF comparison, that would be far more of a concern.
Nobody is Canon Land really has to sweat over this latest 50mm option. There are plenty of options in that range. Now that just released Sigma 00mm 5.6 is far more desirable. In these far shorter focal lengths, 99.9% of shooters, Pro or otherwise won't notice nor care about the difference.
We didn't get the gear for free, it's just a loan. And yeah we're being compensated through YT ads and affiliate links; that's the only way we can afford to do this, but those don't push our assessments one way or the other.
The a1 and a9 III, the only cameras really impacted by the 15 FPS limit, don't usually have any buffering problems at all at 30 FPS in real-world conditions.
@@TonyAndChelsea I wasn't suggesting you got the gear free to keep, but free to use as in reviewing. Huge difference. Plenty of up and coming yTubers would blank for that opportunity alone. As opposed to waiting for the gear to be available, then paying out of pocket. Such as in the case of you buying the FUJIFILM X100VI Digital Camera.
So basically 2 cameras while the vast majority of cameras are not fast enough for it to be a issue. I would be far more concerned about missing a shot because of buffering issues as opposed to not enough FPS. Most folks would be. Pro or otherwise.
No focus breathing topics? Ouh disapointed
Give me a camera 😅
Canon users: 😢😢😢
They'll get over it- either that or make a decision. I know 2 who have already left.
Yeah I didn't want to rub it in, but this probably won't be coming to either Canon or Nikon. Nikon does allow some third-party lenses that DON'T overlap their existing options, but this does overlap with a Nikon lens.
I still prefer creamy bokeh produced by GM or RFL 50/1.2, sigma is great for shooting test charts, IRL it lacks that bokeh magic top lenses have.
Thanks for the reply. @@TonyAndChelsea
Find a good copy used sony 50 gm for $1200-1300z. So it’s cheaper than sigma and most of the depreciation has already been lost by original owner.
This sigma art like all other lose way too much value.
Both are expensive. The autofocus is much better on the Sony and its sharper edge to edge. The re-sell value of the Sony is also much higher. Horrible advice to recommend the Sigma. A typical Tony «unbiased» review.
The 50mm F1.4 from Sony should never of been labeled a "GM", it's a "LM" or a "G" model
What why lol it is a GM lens in aspects
@@johnadams3038 no its not... I own the 1.2 and it is insulting to "photographers" to label the 1.4 as GM. It's a "G" lens for videographers. This Sigma 50mm F1.2 proves the real "GM" is 1.2
@@hikertrashfilms You have no idea what you're talking about lol
@@johnadams3038 yeah I do. The 1.4 50mm was a slap in the face to Sony Owners who were waiting for an 85mm F1.2... It's been 1,784 days after Canon released one for RF and there is still no 85mm F1.2 option for Sony. This Sigma lens is built for Panasonic and Leica owners
@@hikertrashfilms Bro you're insane really lol
Why does the sigma still have that nasty pink/ yellow look and chromatic aberrations? why can’t they fix that, what’s the point of paying thousands of dollars for the image to look pink
You get what you pay for … Sony is a better lens and they ARE NOT identical.
Sony will keep its resale value better and has lower CA (look at the camera CA shot on you bokeh test shot).
It's a valid point about resale value... but that's looking pretty far down the road. I really don't plan on upgrading my 50 f/1.2 anytime soon.
So... Almost as good as the Sony, at best. And yet people still lose their shit with Sigma "Art" series for some reason. Meanwhile for Nikon F, almost all Tamron equivalents are better + they have weather sealing and stabilization. Such an overrated brand. Price is a factor though, same as the Tamrons.
Too late. I bought the 50mm 1.2 a while ago but nice review. 👍🏽
Sony definitely looked worse on chromatic aberration.
When will you RUclipsrs get over this "bokeh" thing. Learn how to compose an environmental portrait without using a blown out background as a crutch! I know, I'm an old man yelling at clouds! ha! I had a 40 yr career in photography shooting for all the major ad agencies in Chicago, NY, and LA. Learn photography! Study: George Hurrell, Arnold Newman, August Sanders, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, John Loengard, Irving Penn, Margaret Bourke-White, Dorthea Lange...There is no "greatest portrait lens", it's the lens you have with you that becomes that. Photography should be an art, that you learn to manipulate and use to create. Not some "photo copy" technique. If it's been done, look for something new to differentiate your work from everyone else! Work is what it takes! It's not the gear, it's your eye!
Thx for this comment. I'm into photography recently and the names you mentioned are worth looking up. Also, my two cents on bokeh is that it's what make women happy. Usually when I shoot portrait, I dont own the photo. My models do. They dont care about how artistic and creative the composition is. They want to be the center of the photo. Just like how guests at a wedding are not allowed to wear white dresses. It's a good photo if they look pretty, period. Have to admit the bokeh is the most important factor in achieving this goal.
as bokehlicious as......... 85mm f1.8 stopped down to f2 with the same framing of the subject (oh no, damned circles of confusion undermine all the marketing effort)
there's this Meike 85mm f1.8 for EF mount which is cheap as hell and also cool as hell, too.
50mm... for bokeh purposes.... come on
Oh I love a 50 f/1.2 specifically because it's wider angle. Especially for portraits, they just feel more intimate than an 85.

As always Sigma has a yellow tint to the image. The skin tones look noticeably worse. Hard pass.
Saving 500$ is not worth losing 120 fps, focusing breathing compensation and getting worse autofocus.

I alredy own the sony and the sigma f2dgdn, If I put both of them at f4, 5.6, you see no difference too...
You don’t buy a f1.2 lens so you can shoot at f4 or f5.6. Lol
Nikon 28-400 is out but it doesn’t seem like they care to send you a lens to review. Pity you little sub human
"They're both perfectly sharp" Are we looking at the same picture? The Sony is consistently sharper and has more contrast. Not in a way that it maters, but if it is even that noticable on a 40MP A1, it is there. Assuming the other disadvantages (focus breathing compensation, frame rate limit, focus speed), the Sony is worth $500 more. You know, if you are in the market for a 50mm F/1.2 and you want _the best_.
