    We moved from Bristol to Winnipeg 4 years ago. We have a nicer house in a more pleasant area than we could ever have afforded in Bristol. Winters are much colder of course, but also much sunnier, which lifts the spirits compared with damp, grey British winters. Summers here are both warmer and sunnier. People from other parts of Canada can be as rude as they like about Winnipeg. Hopefully when they do, that will keep the house prices here relatively affordable so our daughter will be able to afford to buy a place here one day.

So much for helping the homeless when they throw it on the sidewalk.

    I live in Hamilton now, but I lived in Toronto most of my life. I was blown away by how awesome Winnipeg was when we visited a year ago - between the chill vibes, the zoo and museums, along with day trips away from the city, there's a lot to love, and I look forward to the chance to visit again. That said, when I tell people how awesome Winnipeg is, no one believes me (though the same is true for my adopted hometown of Hamilton!).

    • @MegaJellyNelly
      @MegaJellyNelly 3 месяца назад +1

      Hamilton is awesome for parks, food, and 2nd hand shopping. Ppl just give it a bad reputation bc it's mostly a working class/factory worker city, and bc there are homeless people (like 99% of Canadian cities, not the suburbs though). It's classist. But the city is definitely up and coming. I'm from Oakville, and moved out of the country, but I would have moved to Hamilton in a heartbeat if I stuck around.

      @@MegaJellyNelly Totally, and even Barton Street is (very gradually) regaining some of it's luster. The waterfalls are plentiful, and in 30 minutes driving away from the city, you can get farm fresh produce and world class wine.

    Thank you SO much for speaking so well of my city. My great, great grandparents and great grandparents came here from Yorkshire and Devonshire around 1879, and we have BUILT our communities over years. It is all getting more developed, more people are coming, and we are expanding! You also don't have to park your cars on hills, like in Vancouver, where they can roll down and crash in the winter! A very warm welcome to you! Thank you for loving one of our people! If I ever see you two around, I'll definitely say hello! ☺️

      It depends on where you are. Main Street is well known for it's SRO (single room occupancy) hotels and low quality drinking establishments. Recently there have been more druggies downtown because of fentanyl. Facts are facts. But if you get away from downtown and look at where most Winnipeggers actually live, you'll see The 'Peg is a beautiful place: One great city.
      For one thing, people can actually afford their own houses. That means most places are owned by their occupants, not by a landlord and not controlled by a 'strata' committee or HOA. People are free to decorate their places any way they like. Go on StreetView and have a look at neighbourhoods like Woolseley where people have turned their entire front yards into flower gardens. You can't do that in Vancouver or Calgary!
      Then have a look at all the beautiful shade trees lining every street. Pulitzer Prize winner and dual American-Canadian citizen Carol Shields described them as reaching across in a loving embrace. It makes Calgary look denuded in comparison.

    As a Winnipegger I used to hate it here. I moved to Toronto when I was 19 and moved back 4 years later. The grass is not always greener. I LOVE Winnipeg now! The people make it, but the city and everything we have going on in it is pretty amazing. The worst thing is the weather in winter but it’s not -40 the whole time and there’s lots of ways to still enjoy the outdoors.
    I’m proud AF to live here. And because of the high standard of living and low costs, my husband and I bought 2 acres just outside the city to build our dream house and we’re 35! So yeah, I love it here and I’m here for keeps
