Tail: Aussie Possum, Crawfish Orange
Legs: Sili Legs Nymph, Pumpkin Barred
Body: Aussie Possum, Crawfish Orange
"Most modern crayfish patterns focus primarily on a single attribute: Realism. While indeed a valuable component, I find that many realistic flies catch more anglers than fish. The Rio Bandito is a combination of the three important elements that I believe are essential for an effective crayfish imitation: Movement, Profile, and Composition.
As far as movement is concerned, this diminutive crayfish pattern has plenty of motion thanks to the use of Australian Possum and rubber legs.
However, even at rest, it maintains the profile of a juvenile crayfish, and the fly has been eaten countless times while sitting perfectly still!
The Rio Bandito is a snap to tie and because of this, I take risks with it that I likely would not with a fly that requires a larger time investment at the tying bench.
The Rio Bandito has caught bass, sunfish, carp, cichlids, and more than its fair share of trout. I am sure that if you give it a try, it will become a staple in your fly box as it has in mine!"

That loop method gor tying in rubber legs is absolutely killer. Great tie.
Another great job Chris. Thanks.
KILLER FLY!!! Love the video guys! Thank you!
I love this fly so much!
Very nice craw fly -- thanks Chris.
I bought two earlier this week and will be back on Friday for more!
The best multi species fly I have used to date!!!
Picked up some pretty rad trout with these.
And some of my bigger sunfish 🤘🏼
Excellent tie and video.
"You name it, they eat it", so true!
Wow, that really looks like an idea fly! Thank you for taking the time to tie it!
Thanks for watching!
Love it! Thank you!
This fly (and similar variations) is the one I use 80-90% of the time.
I fish Brushy Creek and other water in the immediate area.
Sunfish, Bass, Catfish, and of course Rio Grand Cichlids, are all frequent fliers on it.
No carp.... yet.
If you are in Round Rock, TX on a Wednesday evening, drop by Living Waters Fly Fishing and tie some flys.
Do you all have an online store to get the possum?
can you use squirle for this fly ?
The possum is a stiffer fiber, which holds the shape of the profile best and gives the proper color, but you could substitute with Pine Squirrel in a pinch. We have plenty of custom dyed Australian Possum available through the fly shop. You can call to order any time!
