    My parents are from Sicily and they told me that the no snitch policy “omertà” started 1000 years ago after being oppressed by Normans, Spaniards, French and Germans. It started because they couldn’t trust the authorities ruling over Sicily at any given time. Crimes were usually sorted out by local chieftains. My Grandma said she never heard the word mafia till the Americans came during WWII

    • @farzana6676
      @farzana6676 4 года назад +4

      That's odd because there is no mafia in America.
      In America its called LA Cosa Nostra.

    • @farzana6676
      @farzana6676 4 года назад +1

      @Kristie C Yes that is correct. But in Italy they called Mafia.
      In America they called it La Cosa Nostra.

    • @areswalker5647
      @areswalker5647 4 года назад +7

      @@farzana6676 wrong. According to the region we're talking about mafias are called with different names because they're different from each others (different people, different means, different customs) so you have mafia in Sicily, ndrangheta in Calabria, camorra in Campania and Cosa Nostra in Apulia.
      Mafia as they're generally called has always existed in Italy, even before Italy became an united country, they were the families that assured the town's people safety because the authorities (invaders most of the times) didn't care about them. It later evolved in true businesses and it is said that without mafia's help in ww2 (they had contacts with the people in italy) America wouldn't have been welcomed so soon by the traumatized people. Remember to an italian the word of a known fellow is always 100% better than that of the authorities

      @@areswalker5647 all right ,but wrong the name . Apulia: Sacra Corona Unita , Campania: Camorra , Calabria: Ndrangheta,Sicily: Cosa Nostra (that is the real name of the sicilian mafia and who have connection with American CosaNostra . Cosa nostra ruled the heroin traffic and a great part of the italian politic . In the 90's killing season Cosa Nostra killed Falcone and Borsellino, and functionary of state ,justice ,tv ,high level police official and tribunal executors ) This was the edge of Cosa Nostra under the control of Toto Riina who come from a little small town called Corleone. But after the arrest of Riina and Provenzano Cosa Nostra was destructured and now they are not so powerfull to do a war with a state so they all hide in small towns of sicily with no more the same International contact ,but still stealing the money of state ,stil taking Pizzo from 80% of the big and small imprenditorial Activity in all Palermo . But now the strongest and powerfull mafia is Ndrangheta whit infiltration and connection in all the world ,literally all the continents , with a great expansion in Germany ,Canada ,Australia and some country in Africa. They are not a piramidal system like Cosa Nostra but they still unitary. Not the same for Sacra Corona Unita and Camorra who they are divided in clan and often in war between them. They are strongly radicated in local politics of Naples and Apulia (Puglia in italian)

I remember just over 10 years ago living in Montreal and hearing that many powerful members of the local government had connections in the form of business dealings with the Mafia in Montreal. And what about Berlusconi's connection to the mafia.

    My parents visited Sicily in mid 1970's and mentioned later that they have never met as friendly, nice and heartfelt people as were ordinary Sicilian people. I think this is the first but not least important thing before thinking anything about Sicily and its people. Latest scientific study made by Transcrime found that Italian organized crime doesn't take as high revenues as claimed by e.g Bank of Italy. Instead of 10% of GDP of Italy (claims of Bank of Italy) they took slice of just 0.7%. These gangsters are not as powerful as claimed.

Or were the current gangsters also just recruited and bewitched by the wealth of crime and they got used to it. Do they ever break down in guilt or regret? Are they somehow related to other Cartels which thrive on poverty? These are the questions that might be addressed at some point. This was a good production leaving people wanting more. • @ouivalerie

      Maybe just laws limiting anybody to own assets that are too rich. Like a maximum savings and maximum housing and car prices. As long as they let people get rich, people exist all over that will lie, steal, make drugs, kill and sell out in various ways to get near the money and have the power they think they want to stand up to the other people in life that have things...property, cars.
      To be alive and find yourself unable to live well enough to be with people or make substantial money is the start of people joining these groups.
      In Sicily they probably call it the good life, but in the USA they call it the American Dream....In Africa your allowed to be homeless and poor but many get out of there looking for money and a life of substantial money...
      Seems everyone wants to shun and shake off the poor....the government doesn't want abundance for all in any country, they want to agree with the excess population idea and be hard on them.

      He sent a prefect of police called Cesare Mori to Sicily with unlimited powers. He occupied the island and basically arrested anyone and everyone without trial. Many mafiosi like Joe Bonanno, Salvatore Maranzano and Carlo Gambino fledto America and became major crime bosses.

Who exactly would the mafia protect them from? They are the ones the shops and businesses need protection from, extortion is their bread and butter.
