Ordering Photographs. How and Why I Sequence Photos In A Photo Book

- Photograph meaning? A photograph on its own can say a lot. But when you sequence photographs in your photo books, that's when you can try to express yourself through the sequencing of photos within your photo book narrative.
Today I go through my now rare photo book In-A-Gadda-Da-England (40 copies left, self published photo book 1st edition) and I talk through a particular book narrative I tried to put across in a photo book sequence. But how and why do you 'order photographs' in the photo book design phase?
All the work in the book are film photographs made on my Bronica SQ and an old Ikonta M. Both medium format film cameras. My love of film photography stems from being a teenager in the 90s as that's all there was! There's something to me about medium format documentary photographs that have a little magic.

Thanks Dan, it's all super personal isn't it. I know most folk will be like wtf is he talking about. I guess for me it's about intentionality. For as long as I can remember the art photographers would hide behind photo theorists who would talk about their work, but the truth is, if you've worked on a significant photo project you've probably got many reasons for why you made the work the way you did it.
It is very interesting trying to work out a sequence in a photobook. It is even more difficult trying to do your own sequence from a story, colour balance format. Thanks for your insight.

What you said about the rose was very interesting. Not knowing why you take photos..
I just recently started photography, and probably very late in life(i‘m in my 30‘s now) compared to others.
The technical stuff about shutter speed etc. is very simple to understand, but thats very difficult to get a grasp of is what actually „is a good photo“, what to take photos of and why.
I bought an affordable digital camera and shot a few photos every day. I‘m very limited at the moment in terms of location and time, as i‘m still recovering from an injury, but it seems that location is really a very big factor. It seems also to be a common complaint by beginners, that they live in a small boring place.
But after shooting for a few weeks, i have started to look at the world a little differently, and i assume this will just continue until i get a feel for what for me looks good in a photo, what i like to photograph.
I don‘t assume to ever shoot a photo that actually is „great“, but i definitely enjoy the process and the way it changes my perception of the world around me :)
I have a mantra I've stuck all over my website: "The more you see, the more you know. The more you know, the more you see." For me your own subjective perception of reality is a huge part of being a photographer.

Fantastic. So appreciate this. One thing occurred to me though was how theme and story drove your choices here but for me I was also noticing the tones and colours of the images. There seems to be so much coherence of light. I know your choice of film stock would affect how the images come together; however, I’d love to hear you talk more about consistency of look and feel of colour and light. How do we get better consistency?
Yeah that's a good point. I don't script anything so I just say what comes to mind, but I made that book, the layout from around 2018 -2021.. it took a long time and a lot of thought went into it. In my book dummy making video (an old one) I cover a little about that. The idea that the work was shot over 20 years but still has a visual coherency. I'm quitting RUclips for a while, my next video will be my last for a few months. But I'm working on my next book and I'll make a point to try and record some of the process as I go this time. Uming and ahhing about stopping for a bit. I'll post a video about it. Lots of stuff going on at the moment and as much as I love my RUclips "hobby", I can't just do stuff I like doing right now. Next video will explain all.
