I just want to point out though, while the head-in-a-hole thing is cute for short hair, it ruins the overall look of long hair; since it just gets laid flat on the table, so you can't really tell how it would actually normally look.

I think it's more about the courseness/condition of the hair than the quality/price of the cut. Appearance of condition greatly depends upon courseness. Very course hair is generally this thick/heavier and thereby appears smooth, whereas thin/lighter hair can appear less kempt/fly away because it hasn't the weight to weigh it down. Courseness also affects breakage and damaged ends; thin/light hair is damaged more easily than thick/heavy hair. I'm not positive, but the ones thought to be the more expensive cuts were probably because the hair was healthier looking.
And of course, bleaching and coloring also effects hair health (courseness).
