This time in his career shows how pivotal Purple Rain was and still is to his legacy. Some of these young people were not even born at his peak with the Time and Prince. They dont buy his records from the 80s and they are playing his music. They may here it from their parents at the family cookout but they are not supporting his career. Look at the audiences at his shows - there is no one under 45. What keeps Morris Day a relevant legend is his immortalized image from the Purple Rain film. He will always be that guy in the movie from one generation to the next. He never strayed from that - in fact, he leveraged it for decades. Kids can catch Purple Rain on TV over the weekend and that is what they think Morris is still that guy. He is that cool uncle that used to do a little something on the side. But now he is in his 60s and no amount of collaborations with young rappers is going to make him any more relevant to the music buying audiences. I am sure that is one reason that he is retiring after with the Last Call album.
He's quite perfect for this!
